Chapter Four
Amon sat in his desk at work, looking at the clock. He seemed to be waiting for something, his mood was detached. He looked over at the desk that was Robin’s, and it was empty. She was late, that was odd for her. He just leaned back in his chair and glowered into the distance vacantlyRobin came in minutes later. She carried a travel mug in a hand as she walked over to her desk.
“ Your late.” He said sharply, looking at the girl with a stern gaze. “ Care to explain why your are twenty minutes late?”
Robin blushed brightly, as she knew that she could not tell him why she was late getting to work.
“ I slept in.” She said, flatly.
“ Very well then...” Was his reply, to her answer.
Robin just winced inside, hearing her own words come out. She hated to lie like this, but she could not tell him why she was late getting into the office this morning. She just hoped that it sounded sincere, and promised herself that she would not lie anymore. She did feel bad bringing out such a fib like that- especially to him.
The man snuffed and stood up.
“ We have a meeting, Michael might have found that trail of that witch from yesterday.” He said, standing and going into the briefing room. “ We need to catch this man and fast.”
Robin just nodded, still feeling her face flashing hot with blushing. She just followed the mysterious man to the room with the others straggling behind them. Between her embarrassment she hid and the strange wall of anger thrown up by the against her, her mood slowly sank too.
The computer lad layed it all out for them. The witch was Tojima Sato, thirty one from Okinawa originally. He had the power to throw things with his power. Anything from a knife to a car, he could lift mentally and throw.
“ He is on the SOLOMON ten most wanted list.” Finished up the Hacker lad. “He frequents the Pachinko palaces and others associated with the Red light districts.”
Amon looked at the lad with his impassioned gaze.
“ Any known associates?”
“ None... because of him nearly killing his professor at University when he was given a very poor grade, he has been ostracized by friends and family alike, even the Tokyo police would like him for murder, but as you know, they do not deal with Witches.”
“ Then Karasuma and Haruto hit the pachinko places, we will look around the bars and that area for this Witch.”
The two he spoke of nodded in understanding of their duties, knowing not to ask very many questions of the man. In his mood, it was best not to.
Amon stood up and took the information sheets from the lad. He looked at the Robin and then began to turn.
“ We are going to do the searching for this Witch.” He said to the dark clothed girl. “ Let go.”
He took a few steps, then stopped. He looked back and saw that the girl was still sitting there staring off into space. He spun around and give a loud sighing sound.
“ Robin!!!” He said sternly in a booming voice.
The girl jumped., as she heard her name loudly. She looked up at the man with almost a sort of detached look on her face. He did not look too happy, she thought when she looked at him.
“ Pay attention, Robin!” He snapped, his eyes flashing with anger. “ We have to go right now!”
“ Yes, Amon.” She said, her face showing no emotions.
They headed to the elevators to leave for their mission. Robin watched the man’s movements, trying to read just what was making him in to such a mood, but she could figure out nothing.
The ride was quite, as Amon did not say one word to Robin. The girl just sat in her seat and stared out the window. Her mind was on the man beside her, she found herself hard pressed not to think on him.
She did turn to look at him once during the ride, and found herself studying his face in minute detail. She realized what she was doing and turned herself away. She did not know why she had been doing that, but she made herself stop it.
An hour later, they were both going through a old warehouse in the gambling district of Tokyo’s far end. Michael had a report that a man had thrown another man off a nearby building... without laying one hand on him, then ran into the warehouse he had reported on.
Not waiting for Karasuma and Haruto to show up from the Pachinko Palaces, Amon ordered himself and Robin to enter the building. He had said that he was a danger, if he got away... if they waited on the others.
Michael was on the communicators airwaves in their headsets they wore, directing them to their intended target.
“ By way of the scanners...” The youth said. “ The witch is near the back of the building, somewhere in the electrical room.”
“ Is that an exact position?”
“ As close as I can come for you.” Michael informed.
Amon sighed and thought for a moment.
“ Robin... where are you?” He called out on the airwaves.
“ I am on the south side of the building, I am near what use to be the bar area, judging from the map Michael has sent me by linear e-mail.” Replied the youngest Hunter.
“ You just head over to the electrical room.” He ordered with a flat voice. “ He is reportedly in there right now. I will go on ahead and you bring up the rear.”
“ Copy.” Said the girl.
Amon got to the electrical room first, and went trough the already open doors. Squinting into the low light of the room, he visually scanned the room.
He spotted a man in a ratty long coat squatting in a far corner, unmoving. The tall hunter pulled his weapon from under his arm and tried to stealthily get closer to the man, not knowing whether this was the witch or not. He carefully took his steps, silently moving in for the identification.
The squatted man suddenly snapped his head up, and looked right at the advancing hunter. His eyes were wild and inhuman, glowing with a bright yellow light.
“ Who are you!” The man said, in a gravelly voice.
Amon leveled his weapon at the man, seeing his face in the light of a emergency light that shone nearby. This was Tojima Sato, the witch in question.
“ Stay right there!” Amon said, ready to fire on the man.
“ I have killed before, maggot.” The witch called out, in very staggered words to the man. “ You point a gun at me, I laugh at you.”
Amon suddenly found himself being lifted off the ground and into mid-air, the witch had struck first. He gasped, realizing the ORBO was not working to protect him. He was at the witch’s mercy.
The witch used his power to fling Amon against a nearby concrete wall with crushing force. Amon felt his wind rush out of his lungs painfully, and he realized that he had lost grip on his weapon. He was helpless and weaponless, he did not know what to do for the first time since joining the STN.
Twice more, the witch slammed the man into the wall, both times harder than the first. Then he slammed the man to the floor, the Amon’s body flaying like a ragdoll. Amon was still moving after all of that, but very slowly and her writhed on the floor.
He looked up, and saw the man advancing to him, he knew it was now or never. Amon struggled and got barely to his hands and knees, trying to locate his gun. The witch had gotten closer still.
“ I am done ‘playing’ with you.” The Witch said with a eerie glee. “ It has been fun, though...”
The witch readied to attack again, but a dark figure stepped in between him and the man on the floor. He blinked, and saw it was a young girl dressed all in black who stood defiantly in front of his quarry.
Perturbed, he growled at the young girl.
“ Move your ass, little girl...” He spat with a air of contempt in his voice. “ Or I will just have to do to you, what I am about to do to him!!”
The girl did not move, but stared at him through the glasses she wore low on her nose.
“ No!” She said, in a commanding voice.
The Witch shook his head and smiled at the girl.
“ Very well, misguided little Bitch...” The witch sneered. “ You try and protect that maggot... but I don’t know why you are wasting your life for that maggot.” His eyes began to glow brightly yellow again. “ You’ll die too.”
Robin stiffened, as the witch’s words stung her. She looked at the man with anger seething in her chest, wisps of fire flickering in her green eyes.
“ I love him!!!” She yelled to the man in front of her with every little bit of breath in her.
The Witch Sato gasped, as he saw the girl’s eyes flare. He did not have a chance to move an inch or go on the attack, as his body exploded into fire. He screamed in pain, as the fire ate at him, and then he was gone in the hungry flames.
Robin watch the man disintegrate in the flames in a second. When the fire dies, there was no trace of the Witch, except for a large dark smudge on the floor where he had been. She stood, looking at the smudge, with her breathing slowing.
She realized just what she had said to the man. Her own words had surprised even her completely. She had never said that to herself, much less out loud and she wondered why she had right then and there. She turned to check on the fallen Amon, afraid of his reaction.
Amon was standing there, just staring at the girl, his face was void of any hint of emotion. Robin just looked at him blankly, not moving a muscle, waiting for some sort of reaction from the man to come. She dreaded and needed him to react, but she did not know which was stronger for her. All that came was a very uneasy silence between them.
Karasuma came upon the two, her weapon raised, Haruto was not too far behind. Amon snapped out of his staring and looked at the other hunters that had came on scene.
“ It’s done and over.” He said flatly, his voice very unemotional. “ Robin burned him to a crisp.”
“ He’s dead?” Asked Karasuma, clarifying the man’s statement.
“ Very much so.” Said the man back, his voice void of any inflection or feeling whatsoever.
The man simply walked off, picking up his fallen weapon from right near the wall he had met so personally minutes ago. He holstered it with authority and took a step further on towards the door.
“ Take Robin back to the offices, Karasuma, after you have the SOLOMON guys come out an take pictures of this which’s end.” He said, never turning around to speak.
The man snuffed loudly enough for everyone to hear, and strode the room without saying another word to any of his colleagues. Two of the hunters stood, wholly stunned at the coldness of the man. The young Hunter girl just bowed her head at all of this, a single tear had formed on her cheek
Karasuma just looked at Robin with shock, unknowing just what had all transpired. She turned to look more directly at the young girl.
“ What was that all about?” She asked to the girl.
Robin just shrugged her shoulders a little, and walked off quickly. She too, did not say one word. Haruto pulled his communicator out and did as his leader asked. Karasuma just watched, as she was unsure of anything right then.
“ This is strange.” She commented. “ Did Robin do something wrong? Did We?”
Haruto just got off of his communicator and looked at his own partner. He shrugged, as sign of his unwillingness to think on it.
“ Who knows?” He said flatly. “ I am not gonna ask, I’ve been in the dog house way too much.”
The Hunter woman just snuffed, a little angry at her partners la-de-da attitude. She knew something was not right, but she had no clue what that was. She just shook her head, and waited for the people from SOLOMON to come.
