Chapter 3: Bittersweet

Yune was intensifying her quake. The girls could feel it, and Alinna had floored it. Cymarel was becoming agitated. "Those guys from before - she's sending them a beacon, and they'll go right to her!" Alinna shook her head. "No…I'm going to get there first. Hang on to something." Tires squealing, Alinna rounded another corner.

Yune was becoming impatient. She didn't want to kill anyone…just make them come. Damn it, what does it take to get attention?

The guys were closing in fast. Koenma had contacted Hige, and the wolf had met up with the group. Six men strong, they were ready to take the girls in, no matter what they threw at them.

"There she is!" Shachiko pointed at the girl who stood in the park. Cymarel didn't even wait for the car to stop, instead launching herself out the door. She took off like a rocket, running toward Yune as fast as her legs could carry her. But panic began to set in as she spotted their previous pursuers - Shae's captivors.

"Yune!" Cymarel screamed. The girl doubted she would reach her before the guys did, but she was going to try. Yune looked up and took in her surroundings. She was strangely satisfied at the results. Yune did not move toward Cymarel - instead she turned to face the strange young men, only to be tackled by a wolf, who quickly changed forms - into a human boy. Cymarel was prepared to use her gift against the canine, but was surprised as the red-head tackled her, pinning her on her stomach. He quickly cuffed her, and she felt her energy drain as she was hauled into a sitting position. She quickly found herself looking into bright green eyes, a bit dazed. But the water-powered girl shook her head to clear it. Alinna, Riana, and Sachiko were charging forward now.

Shae opened her eyes slowly. She had a killer headache. The cuffs had been removed, but she had been locked into a darkened room. Shae rolled off the futon she had been slumbering on, groaning. It would do no good for her to use her powers here…there was one who could withstand and subdue her flames. Cautiously, she walked to the door and peered out through the small window. Her gaze was met by two blood-red irises, staring intently. Gasping loudly, Shae launched herself backwards, landing on her ass and scooting up against the wall. It was him…the one they called Hiei, the one who could play with the fire without getting burned, the one who could look into her mind. Just what he took notice of in her mind, she didn't want to know. She had a few secrets she wanted to keep.

The door opened and Hiei walked in, closing the door behind him. "I see you're awake." Shae refused to make eye contact, but nodded. "I only examined things in your mind that were necessary. Nothing more." At his words, Shae let out her breath in relief.

Sitting on the floor in front of her, his knees less than a foot from her own, his scarlet gaze nearly bored a hole in her head. Shae squirmed a bit - the combination of his intense stare and the fact that she found him rather attractive…'Whoa!' her mind squawked. `Where did those thoughts come from?' Hiei broke into the silence. "Where do you get your powers?"

Shae's face fell a bit. "I don't know - I was born this way. I'm a freak. That's why my parents got rid of me…the Doctor paid them so that he could keep me." Hiei's eyes darkened. He knew only too well what it was like to be discarded. He watched as Shae drew her knees to her chest and hugged them close, rocking slightly back and forth.

"Who is the Doctor?" Hiei almost whispered the question, expecting the reaction she gave. She looked like a scared little girl, a haunted look in her eyes. "He used us in his experiments. Trying to make us strong. In the end, he was going to use us to make a god-like creature. But it was horrible. He was trying to break us down to the point where taking lives didn't bother us. Trying to jade us. But we got away. You're not going to make me go back, are you?" Hiei shook his head. "No. In fact, if he shows up trying to reclaim you, I'll kill him personally. No one deserves that treatment."

Shae sighed heavily. "I'm so weak, he probably dispose of me and find another." A growl erupted from the fire apparition. "You're not weak. If you were, you'd have destroyed yourself long ago. Frankly, I'm surprised you have held your mind together this long. Now drop the stupid talk, it's making me ill." The two continued talking, as it was calming her nerves considerably - accomplishing the fire demon's goal.

The fight was over. The girls were all in custody…and Kuwabara had a concussion, thanks to Alinna. She nearly took his head off with a vicious kick. But in the end, they were all reigned in. When they were brought before Koenma, Yune began to demand answers. "What the hell have you done with Shae, bastard? Tell me now, unless you want to be crushed beneath a thousand pounds of rock." Koenma just smirked. "Unfortunately, Yune, your power doesn't work in Spirit World. Neither does Cymarel's. Wind and fire can only be produced here." Alinna was struggling - it was taking both Yusuke and Kuwabara to restrain her. "So what did the fucking doctor pay you to give him Shae?" She spat.

"Nothing, because he is not going to turn me over." Shae strode into the room, with Hiei close beside her. Sighs of relief went up around the room. But Cymarel wasn't so sure…"How did you manage to subdue her? She's the strongest person I know!" Shae looked away, looking ashamed, so Hiei answered for her. "I'm a fire demon. Flames belong to me as well."

Yusuke laughed sharply. "Actually, you're friend is falling apart in her twisted little mind. Some friends you are for not having noticed it." Cymarel glared daggers at him, while Riana and Sachiko began swearing like sailors. Hiei gave Yusuke a look that could have lit the room on fire. "That's not it at all you fool. Shut your mouth, and don't speak of things you don't understand. Each one of them has been nursing their own wounds, carrying their own burdens, just trying to remain sane." Kurama nodded. "If Shae's mind reflects what is found in the rest of you, you have a lot of healing to do."

Koenma cleared his throat. "Remove their cuffs. They'll be ok without them, I think. I have a proposition for you…and I'll fill you in shortly. I suggest we take this to the conference room.

Not five minutes later, Koenma was laying out his offer. "What I would like to do is employ you as Spirit Detectives. Botan would be your guide, plus you would get to work with those you have already met. You would no longer have to steal, you could still continue life as before, to an extent, and you would be shielded from the Doctor joker. I'm protective of my help, you see."

Yusuke snickered. "Yeah, only because if we weren't here, you'd have to do all the dirty work." Koenma glared at his detective but did not reply to the snide remark.

Shae nodded. "I accept…simply because if I don't keep busy, I'm going to lose it. I'm tired of fearing the shadows, and if I'm busy, I won't have time to think so much." Cymarel voiced her approval. "We won't have to steal anymore…" Alinna raised her hand. "Count me in." Yune did likewise. "Me too." Sachiko just nodded her consent, while practical Riana voiced another question. "What about benefits?" Yusuke gave her a sly grin. "Well, you'll be working with the coolest guys on the planet." Riana rolled her eyes. "Sounds like a sentence to me." Koenma cleared his throat to gain attention once more.

"I'm assigning you in pairs. You best learn to get along, because you will need to be able to trust one another. And the pairs are as follows." Koenma got a goofy grin on his face. Someone was sure to hate him…

"Shae, you and Hiei will be working together. Cymarel, you'll be working with Kurama - Yusuke, shut up, or I'll have Botan remove your tonsils with her oar (Yusuke had been cutting up again). Alinna and Hige will be working together. And moving right along, Yune, you'll be working with Touya…wow that could get interesting, and Sachiko, you'll be working with Jin. Now that leaves us with Riana - lucky you - you get to work with Yusuke."

Everyone eyed each other, sizing up their partners. Yusuke had a lecherous look on his face. Koenma continued. "Those of you who have been doing this awhile, you will be responsible for providing some training, as well as keeping the girls alive. Nothing inappropriate, or else the girls have full permission to break things." The ruler's gaze was fixed on Yusuke, but the detective did not notice.

"Take the rest of the day to get to know each other - you'll be busy tomorrow."

End Chapter.

Thanks for the reviews - you guys are the best. I love you all! Short I know, but I'm trying to move the story forward.

Things are going to change a bit in format. Starting the next chapter, I'm going to be doing the story from the point of view of four characters per chapter. Next chapter will be from Shae's, Kurama's, Alinna's, and Touya's point of view. The following chapter will be from Sachiko's, Yusuke's, Hiei's and Cymarel's. The chapter after that will be for Hige, Yune, Jin, and Riana. Sounds like fun, ne? After that, I'll think of some other way to shake things up - maybe one chapter devoted to each couple. I'll think about it.

Next chapter: It's a Beautiful Letdown. Shae has a hard time getting over her attraction to Hiei, Kurama's `other' side wants to be cut loose, Alinna is having a hard time getting the wolf to let her go out, and Touya's trying to remain icy, but for some reason, he's starting to melt a bit.

Ja ne!
