Chapter 1: Desperate Measures

Shae woke slowly. She was sitting in a chair, slightly slumped over, and her hands and feet were bound with some strange cuffs…they made her feel completely drained of her power. The girl didn't even have the strength to struggle. The only thing that seemed to work right was her mind.

"Hey, she's waking up."

Shae snapped her head up to find the ugly orange-haired boy. Her eyes revealed her fury, even though her body could not. She soon found that she was alone in a room with now 5 young men, each with their eyes fixed on her. Damn it…had she be taken back to the Doctor?

One male with a pacifier sticking out of his mouth stepped forward. "Glad to see you're awake and well. Don't try to fight - those spirit cuffs keep your energy at bay. I am glad however that Hiei was equipped to deal with the threat you pose."

"I am Koenma, ruler of Spirit World. The others here you have seen - There's Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and you know Hiei well." Shae made a mental note of who was who, but her eyes did not leave the ruler.

"Now, you have some questions to answer. Who are you exactly?" Koenma spoke sternly. Shae immediately began to stare off into space, and spouted off the first thing that came to her mind.

"I didn't want to know."

Koenma looked rather perplexed. This was not the answer he thought she would give. Rather, it was the opposite. "Beg pardon?"

"I just didn't want to know."

Cymarel paced, nervously twirling her hair. "What the hell is going on? Are they in league with the Doctor? Will they take her back there?"

Sachiko looked like she was going to hurl. "If she has been taken back, we'll have to move on." Seeing the angry looks of her peers, she balled her hands into fists. "You know she would prefer it that way. She would never want us to risk being caught just to go after her!" The girl was right - Shae would rather she be exterminated than to know her only friends landed back in that hell hole because of her.

Alinna nodded. "I still say we look into this. I don't think the Doctor would make his plans known for anyone else to do this on his behalf. It's not his nature." Rianna nodded. "We should sit tight for 24 hours…I want to research the matter before we blindly fly to the rescue. Does that work for you guys?"

The girls nodded. "Hey…has anyone seen Yune?" Cymarel quipped.

Yusuke was squatting in front of Shae now. "Your name. Tell us your name."

Shae didn't even look at him - rather, she seemed to be looking through him. "Best to keep things in the shallow end, cuz I never quite learned how to swim."

Hiei narrowed his eyes, taking only what he needed from the swirling depths of her mind. "It's Shae." Shae still didn't seem to snap out of it. Even when Yusuke asked his next question. "Who are the others?"

"And I didn't want to know."

"You're making no sense. Who are they?"

"Didn't want. Didn't want. Didn't want. Didn't want."

Kuwabara's eyebrow was twitching. "Didn't want what? What's your damage?" Kurama held up a hand to silence him. "Let me try…Shae, who are your friends? I understand that you want to protect them, but we need to know…"

Shae began to tremble. "Close my eyes just to look at you - taken by the seamless vision."

Hiei was beginning to grow impatient. "She's lost her mind. Listen to me you baka onna….you had better snap out of it and speak." He stepped forward and put a finger on her forehead. "Or I'm going in there to get what we need. And you won't enjoy it."

Shae closed her eyes tightly. "I close my eyes…ignore the smoke. Ignore the smoke. Ignore the smoke…"

"I think she has lost it. Completely." Yusuke threw up his hands. Hiei shook his head. "No, I don't think so. She's protecting them, and has snapped into a defensive mechanism. I'll break it if she doesn't cooperate…"

Shae was fighting to keep control of her emotions. One rolling right on top of another. The panic was threatening to take over.

"Call it aftermath, she's turning blue. Such a lovely color for you. Call it aftermath, she's turning blue. While I just sit and stare at you."

Yune crossed the street in a run, attempting to get to the park before it rained on her. Not that she cared. She was going to make them find her. The ones that took Shae. She was going to make them find her and take her to Shae. The girl was too unstable to be alone like that, as a prisoner no less.

Hiei delved into the darkness of Shae's mind, retrieving information here and there. But the deeper he went, the more disturbed he became. Past events revealed the horror the girl had lived, as well as her companions. Shae began to scream and he pulled away, looking visibly shaken.

"No! Don't make us go back! We can't go back - he's destroying us!" Shae shrieked, tears streaming down her face. Somehow, she wrenched herself to the side, bringing the chair over and down - right on her arm. Kurama was quick to right the chair, and Hiei knelt down in front of her, grasping her chin roughly.

"Tell me, who was he?"

"Don't make me go back. Please, I can't go back" Shae, the hard, cold yet fiery young woman was sobbing like a child.

"Who was he?"

"The doctor."

Hiei stood. "Undo her bonds. Let her rest."

Koenma put his hands on his hips. "Is that wise? What did you find out?"

Hiei stood in the doorway, ready to leave. "I found that she's doing what she can to survive. They all are. You would do well to employ that survival instinct - because otherwise, they're going to self-destruct and take Ningenkai with them."

Alinna stepped on it as she rounded another corner in their sedan. Cymarel sat next to her, face calm, but eyes betraying her. Sachiko sat in the back with Riana in silence, while Riana was venting.

"There is no information about any Spirit Detectives. I think it's another damn secret agency or something. How are we supposed to face something that's a mystery?" Riana was ready to spit nails.

Alinna tried to calm her. "Relax. We got away from the Doctor, right? We can beat this."

Cymarel sighed. "We're not invincible. We are just human…"

Sachiko cleared her throat. "I believe we're supposed to find Yune right now. One fucking thing at a time, if you please."

Yune stood in the park, gathering her energy. The earth began to shake violently. Thankfully, the park was empty, because trees were tipping over, crashing to the ground. The ground began to split as the massive earthquake intensified. Yune's face was full of determination. "Come get me, bastards. Come take me to her."

Hiei had just briefed the crew on the girls in question. He described them all as he had seen them in Shae's mind. Since the mission to retrieve them and bring them to Spirit World was not going to be easy, they called on the help of a few others. Jin and Touya now sat in the room, and they were trying to contact a wolf disquised as a human in Ningenkai.

Discussions on their game plan came to a screeching halt when Botan burst into the room. "There is a massive earthquake in the human city! It's going to tear the city apart if someone doesn't make the girl stop!"

Koenma, now in baby form, spit his pacifier across the room. "What girl?"

Botan answered simply, as though Koenma should just know. "The one who controls earth."

"Yune." Yusuke stated, standing. "Well, that's our cue. Let's go get her. Where there is one, there should be more." Koenma nodded. "I agree, but I want Hiei to remain in case Shae awakes, since at his brilliant request, we removed her cuffs." Hiei just growled. He hated babysitting…
