Chapter 4 of The Moon's Tears: Forgotten Than Remembered
She fumed as she stepped outside trying her best to clam herself to no avail. She took a few deep breathes and closed her eyes than slowly reopened them. "And to add to this shitty day, I have no idea where the others are." she berated to herself, crossing her arms across her chest with a scowling expression on her face.
"Well if you don't know where they are than you shouldn't go wandering aimlessly around," a smug voice said from behind her.
She turned around to see the wolf leaning nonchalantly against the wall of the tenement, still slightly bleeding from his leg, but not too much to make her care, "Leave me alone." she hissed at him venomously.
"You're more likely to get killed by Leiko than find them." he replied sheepishly.
"Leiko?"
"The hunter that was about to shoot you earlier." he said glancing up at her.
"Are there more hunters like her?" Khota wondered aloud even though she knew the answer was obvious.
"Of course." he said haughtily, "Don't you know anything?"
"Well, I've never been in a city long enough to find out. My companions and I move around a lot to avoid such things. I never thought that I'd run into a hunter in this crappy city, than again, humans always live in crappy places, don't they? It suit them though since they are the ones who basically destroyed this planet, right?" she said to him than she quirked her eyebrow, "What's your name anyway?-mine's Khota."
"Tsume," he told her looking at her blandly.
"Do you have any cohorts Tsume?" she questioned him.
"I guess." he answered. He didn't know if he could call them friends despite everything they had been through together.
"Where are they?"
"They should be back soon, they just went to get some things." he said.
"Oh," Khota sighed and walked over to where he was and leaned her back against the wall than placed her hands behind her head looking up at the scattered cloudy sky. "How come you saved me?" she asked randomly, out of the blue.
Tsume gave a small shrugged before answering in his cocky voice, "If I didn't there would be one less wolf waltzing around and we wolves are almost already extinct."
"I guess that makes sense," she said thoughtfully, "So…why are you and your friends here in this city?"
Tsume snorted, "They're not my friends."
"But I thought-"
"You were wrong." Tsume cut her off, glaring at her sideways.
Khota narrowed her eyes a little, And Baku says I'm antisocial, she thought. "If they aren't your friends than what are they to you? Why are you staying here if you don't like them then?"
Tsume closed his eyes, "They're just acquaintances , nothing more." He opened his eyes and stared out ahead of him at the building opposite them, looking at the cracks on the gray wall.
Khota gazed at him sorrowfully, but didn't say anything. She then turned her attention to the ground and shuffled her feet uncomfortably before ending the silence, "Do you like being alone then Tsume?"
"It suits me fine." he said vacantly.
She sank down against the wall until she was sitting on the cold ground, "I'd hate to be alone." she hugged her knees and wondered how could Tsume even stand the thought of not having anyone.
"You get used to it over time." he told her coolly.
"I guess," she whispered in a melancholy voice.
Tsume stared down at her, This girl has mood swings, one minute she's pissed at me and the next she's feeling sorry for me. Well…I don't need her sympathy, "Don't feel bad for me." he ordered, but it was more like a request.
"I never said I felt sorry for you…I was just thinking about how much I hated to be alone." she said slowly, "You see, my parents died when I was little and my older brother took care of me until he said he had to leave me for my own protection or something like that. Anyway, I left and I just remembered how lonely I was without him and my parents. It felt like there was a huge hole in me where everything dear to me was just spilling out and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I'd never grow accustomed to such a horrible feeling, that was the saddest time of my life until I met Aki, Baku and Rayne. I felt better, but I still felt forlorn, it just didn't bother me that much anymore and happiness soon filled that hole and then everything seemed like it would work out ever since."
"But you're still lonely in the end because you can never forget about your family." Tsume pointed out.
Khota nodded sadly, "True, but I've learned to ignore the most painful parts of it. I'm still lonely, you're right about that, just not as much as I once was." she looked up at Tsume, "Why do you like to be alone?"
"It's easy to be alone if you don't trust people, besides, having friends makes life more complicated than it already is." Tsume said hastily than added. "What's that around your neck?" He had noticed a small lump underneath her black tank top.
Khota took her locket out from under her turtle neck tank top, the sun's weak rays bounced off it making it look more flashy than it really was. "It's my locket, my brother gave it me before he left…" She ran her index finger over the small golden heart than 'clicked' it open.
"What's it say?" he asked mildly curious.
Khota exhaled leisurely and looked at the writing engraved inside, "I'll always love you, from your brother,…Hige." she muttered just hardly audible for Tsume to hear.
"What was your brother's name?" he asked as the color drained from his face a little.
"Hige, why?" she replied bluntly not noticing his expression.
He did his best to regain his composure than said, "It's just that…" he scratched the back of his neck, "I know someone with the same name is all…"
Khota perked up, "What did you say?" a twinge of excitement swam inside her head.
"I know someone with the same name." Tsume said eyeing her.
"Really?" she inquired suspiciously, wondering if he was pulling her leg since he seemed like the type who would play with a person (or wolf in her case) emotions like they were toys. "Does he have rusty colored hair similar to mine and reddish eyes?"
Tsume nodded, "I wouldn't lie about something like this?"
Khota studied him for a moment and stood up to look him directly in the eyes, trying to find out if he was speaking the truth or not. She had missed her brother so much and now the thought that someone knew him seemed almost impossible for it felt like for all the while she had been holding onto an out of reach dream and it seemed to good to be the truth if he wasn't lying. After a few moments of silence she whispered, "You aren't lying are you?"
Tsume shook his head, "I may be an asshole at times ,but I'm not the type to lie to anyone."
Khota stared at him for a few more unbelieving seconds until she heard a voice call from behind her, "Hey Tsume, we're back!"
Khota peered over her shoulder to see a young boy with brown hair and huge brown eyes running towards them with four figures walking slowly behind him, two females and two males.
The stopped next to her and looked at her and cocked his head, "Who are you?"
"Khota." she answered looking at him intently. This must be Tsume's 'acquaintance', she thought.
"Cool, I'm Toboe." he said with a big smile.
The other three that were behind him walked up to them with a slow pace and looked at her oddly.
She noticed that the girl with red eyes and white hair was giving off the lunar flower sent that she was smelling earlier and that next to her was a male wolf holding her arm protectively, he had deep blue eyes and longish messy brown hair, and the way he was holding onto the girl reminded her oddly of Rayne's protective nature.
Khota than scanned the other two wolves, a female with blue eyes and brown and her eyes froze as she looked at her companion. Khota's heart began racing faster each second as she gaped at him.
"Who's this?" the female wolf asked, eyeing Khota suspiciously.
"Her name's Khota." Toboe answered for her. "I think she's Tsume's friend."
"She's not my friend!" Tsume hissed, "I just saved her from getting her head blown off by Leiko, that's all."
"Hi," The girl with white hair chirped, "I'm Cheza."
"Khota…" The male wolf standing next to the female wolf, "That sounds kind of familiar…" He looked at her concentrating on where he had heard the name before.
Khota stared blankly at him and felt an utmost rage form within herself. She had missed him so dearly and yet here he was right in front of her not remembering who she was. She couldn't take it, she felt tears coming to her eyes as she tried her best to suppress them, but couldn't. Instead of feeling happy to finally see him, so felt her anger level rising. Than without warning she punched him in the face and yelled, "You bastard! How could you have forgotten me? I hate you!" Than she turned around and ran off, not caring about what she had just done. She wanted to get as far away from him as she possibly could.
Hige caressed his check in his throbbing hand, "What the fuck was that?"
Tsume chuckled darkly and glanced over at Hige on the ground rubbing his red check with Blue kneeling beside him. "Who was that?" Blue asked Hige.
"Khota?" Kiba looked at Hige, "Do you know her?"
Hige looked puzzled for a few seconds than froze, "Aw…shit." He nodded his head, "I really fucked up this time."
"I'll say." Toboe piped up, "She looked awfully upset with you."
Blue stared at Hige, "How do you know her?"
Hige sighed, "Long story." He got to his feet, "I'll be right back." Than he ran in the direction that Khota did.
Khota stopped running when she was out of breath and sat down hugging her knees against a building. Tears came from her eyes and rolled down her cheeks as she fumed with rage in her mind, "How could he have forgotten?" she whispered to herself, "I know its been a long time, but how could he?" She wiped the tears from her eyes and spread her legs out in front of herself. Khota fingered the locket around her neck for a few moments then carefully undid the clasp than threw it to her side. She didn't want it anymore, it represented the one person whom she loved after all this time who had forgotten about her. She sniffed silently, dwelling in her own world of sorrow.
"Khota!" she heard a familiar voice call. She looked to her right and saw Hige running up to her, he stopped next to her than sat down, "I'm sorry for back there." He said slightly out of breath.
She faced the other direction than said, "Well you should be."
Hige fixed his eyes on Khota, "Look, I'm really, really sorry. It's just…I've had a lot on my mind lately."
She glared at him over her shoulder, "Well I have too, but that doesn't mean I have forgotten you." she replied bluntly, "You're such a bastard." she mumbled softly.
Hige rolled his eyes, "You're such a pain." he said in a teasing voice.
"Don't you mock me." she hissed at him bearing her teeth (A/N fangs actually…), "I honestly can't believe you."
Hige saw the locket on the ground and picked it up, "I remember when I gave this to you." He fastened it back around her neck, "I'm truly sorry." He gave her his puppy dog eyes, something he used to do often when they were younger.
Khota looked him in the eyes and saw that he truly meant it and she smiled a little, "Alright."
He got to his feet and offered his hand to help her up which she excepted.
"You've grown a lot." Hige commented.
"I guess." she said.
"Have you been wandering around on your own all this time?" he asked walking next to her.
"Not all the time." she replied thinking about her companions and feeling a twinge of guilt eat at her, "There's Aki, she's kind of the leader of the group. Than there's Baku who likes to talk back to her, than Rayne who's overly protective of everyone. They must be worried suck about me by now."
"So you made some friends." Hige said.
"I guess they're friends," Khota said, "We get along pretty well except for Baku and Aki, they have real good rows at each other from time to time."
"Sounds like Tsume and Toboe if you ask me." Hige grumbled.
"I know who Toboe and Tsume are, but who were those other wolves and that girl?" she inquired not wanting to feel too nosey.
"The girl's Cheza, she's a flower maiden, I'll explain that to you later. The guy who was holding her arm was Kiba, he's kind of protective of her. The female wolf was Blue and she's a good friend of mine." Hige replied putting emphasize on 'good'.
Khota raised her eyebrows than giggled, "Can't resist following a girl's tail can you? You haven't changed much." She than noticed the bruise on his face than looked down at the ground, "Sorry about punching you before."
"Don't sweat it," Hige said, "I deserved that." He grinned at her than punched her playfully in the arm, "You've changed a lot though."
"Really?" she asked.
"Yea, you're still short ,but I see improvement in your height." Hige joked.
"That wasn't nice." she fumed childishly hitting him back in the same naive manner that he had punched her.
"Sorry runt." Hige smirked.
"Hige…" Khota growled as they turned a corner and saw the others waiting for them ,"Don't make me kick your ass."
