Chapter 20
Kasumi, Ayane, and Niki opened their eyes slowly, wondering on why Death was painless. Kasumi noticed that they were in a golden aura, but she heard Niki scream in fright awhile later. "What is it?", Ayane inquired. Niki pointed downwards, and when the two ninjas looked down, they were taken aback as well. They were floating in a golden orb, hundreds of feet in the air! Ayane noticed that they were still in the place where the hotel used to be, but that the hotel and the island were now gone! 'The explosion must have been very great! The entire island must have sunk into the sea.', she thought. Kasumi inquired, "How is this possible?!". They got their answer when they looked up slightly, and saw that Yugi was in deep concentration. Eyes squeezed shut tightly, and his teeth showing and grinding together hard, he was very much focused. "That kid must have created this orb, and protected us from the explosion! He saved us!", Niki exclaimed in relief. Kasumi replied, "But, how can he do this?!". Ayane was wondering the same thing. Slowly, the golden orb they were in slowly started to drift towards the ship down below them. Then, Yugi spoke! He explained with a strained voice, "Its… okay. I'm just… using the… magical residue… from my trips… to the Shadow Realm… to do this.". Kasumi and Ayane then remembered hearing about Yugi's trips in and out of the Shadow Realm in the past. 'It is possible.', both girls concluded. He slowly started to drift downwards towards the ship, but soon the orb started to flicker on and off!
"What's happening?!", Niki exclaimed in a panic. She had every right to be afraid, for if the orb were to disappear, it would have been a hard and deep plunge into the ocean waters. Yugi groaned a bit, then managed to answer, "The magic I'm… using right now… it's fading away! It's… all used up!". Ayane and Kasumi had worried looks on their faces, very much afraid that that they were going to go into a watery grave. However, Yugi was not about to give up just yet! 'I have to do this! I have to save them!', he thought with sheer determination. Concentrating even more, he used the last bit of Shadow Magic. Now, he was using his own spirit and life force to power up the orb! "Don't worry… ladies. We're going… to make it now.", he told them. Kasumi then felt something, like a sharp jab of pain that was sent through her soul. It was very small and minor, but it was still there. She looked at Yugi's face, and saw that he was concentrating very hard. 'Why is he…?', she was asking herself, when it hit her hard. 'Yugi is using his own life force now to hold the orb in place, and controlling it!', she concluded. She now looked at the young man again with a new level of respect, admiration, and love shining in her soft brown eyes. With a bit more speed, the orb descended down upon the ship, its passengers looking up at in awe. Kasumi made a mental note to show Yugi her full appreciation for all that he had done for her and everyone else. "He's such a rare and special man. It would be a great honor to be his girlfriend and true love.", she said quietly to herself.
Down below, the others saw the orb and what it contained inside it. They were all just flabbergasted, including Yami. "How is that possible?!", Tea exclaimed. Yami answered, "I don't know how, but Yugi is now using a bit of Shadow Magic! He somehow created that orb, and it protected him and the ladies when the hotel and island went under.". The DOA Boys were very much in awe to see that Yugi did indeed have magic, and was using it right now to save the girls. Joey asked, "How in the heck can he use Shadow Magic, Yami? I thought you were the only one to use Shadow Magic now.". Helena stepped in and answered the blonde boy. She said, "I can answer that question, boy.". In her eyes, Yugi was a man and showed him respect. Joey, however, was only a mere boy in her eyes. She told them all on how Yugi showed her some Shadow Magic, and also on how he acquired it. "When he finished playing that wonderful opera song for me, he told me that he had used some of the magical residue that was on him. It was because of his trips back and forth to the Shadow Realm that he acquired some.", she finished while casting a cold glare at Yami and Co. That seemed to clear up some things to them all. Hayate then inquired, "Who is the other woman with them?". They all had no idea, and were about to ask Zack, when they saw that the multi-millionaire had disappeared. "Wonder where he went?", Bass asked no one in particular. Seto smirked, knowing why the former DOA fighter had fled. Just then, he heard his watch beeping out loudly. He flipped the watch face open, and was now looking directly into the worried faces of Peorth and Laga.
"What is it, you two?", he asked. Peorth answered first, "Seto, we have serious news to tell you!". Laga took up, "Its about Yugi!". Seto told them to tell him right now, and it was Laga that dropped the bomb. "We just completed a diagnostic check on Yugi, and it seems he's slowly losing consciousness!", she said with tears in her eyes. His eyes widened in shock considerably, as did everyone else who had scooted closer to him to listen in. "He must be sustaining that orb then by his own life force.", Yami told them non-chantedly. Tina went up to him and demanded, "What does that suppose to mean?!". The ex-ruler of past Egypt sighed and explained, "That means that he has used up all of the Shadow Realm's magical residue. Now, he has somehow managed to channel his own spirit energy. Yugi is now losing his own life to sustain that orb.". Tristen chuckled and said with malicious glee, "Well, well. It looks like he'll die on his own, and save us the trouble of doing it for him.". That little comment earned him a very hard punch on both sides of the face, courtesy of Lei Fang and Hitomi. Tristen got knocked out-cold in no time flat. When the others tried to help him, they quickly backed off when they saw the crazed, bloodthirsty look in the eyes of the ladies. Not just Lei Fang and Hitomi, but the rest of the DOA Ladies joined with them as well. Seto also joined them, along with Serenity and Cas. Laga and Peorth, through the watches of Seto and Cas, also glared daggers at the small group. Christie looked coldly at all of them and stated in an icy tone, "If Yugi does die, I'll make sure to you all receive a punishment far worse then death.". Any and all talk was soon put to rest when a certain golden orb landed softly on deck.
The aura of golden light slowly disappeared, freeing the four people that were inside. Hayate went over to hold his sister, silently thankful that she was alive. The DOA girls went to all of them, wanting to make sure they were okay. After seeing that they were okay and well, all eyes turned to a certain tri-colored savior. Yugi's eyes were very much squinting now, his body just racked with pain, exhaustion, and also weariness. He smiled slightly and whispered, "You are safe now.". He then closed his eyes completely, and fell lifeless on the deck floor. Luckily for him, Kasumi managed to break free from her brother and catch his frail-looking body in her arms. Lisa asked in a shaky voice, "Is he…?". Kasumi checked for a pulse, and was very much relieved to feel a slight life sign. "He is alive! Just out-cold completely!", she said joyously. That got a huge relieved sight from the girls, Seto, and the two cyber cuties Laga and Peorth. The beautiful shinobi slowly stood up from her crouched position, gently cradling the hero in her arms. "We better get him to a room soon, so he could rest. We'll do medical treatment on him while he's resting.", she told the groups. The ladies nodded their heads quickly, and Kasumi led the way back to the room decks. The DOA Boys followed behind them, Jann Lee asking Lei Fang while running, "While we do this, how about you tell us on what has really happened in the past week?". He had a feeling that Zack had lied and deceived them all.
~A few hours later~
Yugi was situated comfortably on a large, queen-sized bed. He was still out-cold, and some parts of his body were covered in bandages. On the right side of the bed was Kasumi, on the left was Cas. Both were keeping a vigil over the small hero, love and admiration shining brightly in their eyes. Outside on one of the larger decks, the DOA ladies had explained the entire situation to the boys. Even Yami and Co. heard it all, and were very much surprised to hear on what had happened prior to coming up onto the boat. "And, that is what really happened!", Tina concluded. Needless to say, all were now stunned into silence. Bass shook his head, half in anger and half in shame. "I really can't believe that we fell for Zack's lies.", he said ashamed. Jann Lee performed a snap kick out of anger and stated, "Wait till I get my hands on that lying son-of-a-bitch!". Just then, Hayate stood up before them all. He bowed to all, and when he rose up, he stated, "I would like to apologize to all of you ladies for the misunderstanding.". Hayabusa stood beside him and added, "Same here.". The rest of the DOA boys stood up from their seats and apologized to the entire DOA ladies. "Apology accepted.", Tina said. If there was one thing they learned from Yugi, it was forgiveness and mercy. However, there was another problem left to deal with. Lisa tore away her gaze from the men, and laid it on cold with Yami and Co. "By the way, Yami. We haven't discussed on why you and your sick little friends there wanted to hurt Yugi, then kill him.", she told him coldly. Christie stood up as well beside her friend and added, "Yeah. We want to know what happened to you all, on why you turned on Yugi.".
Back in said hero's room, Kasumi gently caressed Yugi's left cheek. She was very much entranced on how close she was to her crush, and now savior. 'I would have been dead if it wasn't for Yugi.', she thought. Just then, another voice entered the room, "How is he doing?". Kasumi looked up, and saw that Cas had opened her watch. She set it on the table, and the viewing screen on it showed Laga and Peorth. Laga asked once again, "How is he doing?". Kasumi answered, "He is doing fine, by my view. His breathing is normal, and he seems to be recovering quite well.". Peorth sighed in relief and stated, "That is good to hear. However, we did run a diagnostic on his body system, and estimate that he'll be out-cold for about three days.". Laga added, "Yes. In three days, he should regain enough strength to wake up.". Cas then said something very interesting to her new friend. She said, "You know, it's probably a good thing that Yugi came to all of you on that island.". Kasumi replied, "I know. Its really the best thing to happen to any of us.". Cas shook her head lightly and stated, "No, no. I mean, on a much bigger scale.". The buxom shinobi looked at Cas in curiosity, as did Laga and Peorth. Cas then started to explain, "I mean, you are right. If Yugi didn't come to the island, you and the rest would still be the same as you were when you arrived at the island.". Kasumi saw that she did have a point. Cas continued onward, "However, there is something here I see now. If Yugi hadn't come to the island in the first place, all of you would have been caught off guard by the volcano. And that would mean…".
"We would have all been killed.", Kasumi whispered in shocked tone. It was true, the pieces falling into place. Without Yugi, Zack would have never made all those attempts to try and take his life. Plus, he would have never called out the boys and the ship! Without Yugi, they would have been toast and sunk down into the sea with the island. Laga smirked and said, "Heh, it seems Yugi's heroic status just went up another level.". Peorth nodded and added, "Indeed. It would seem Yugi managed to pull off another save unknowingly.". Kasumi looked down at her savior, a silver tear sliding down her right cheek. Without so much as word, she bent down slightly and kissed Yugi gently on the lips. Cas smiled at the scene, knowing full well now that Kasumi was defiantly in love with the young man. "Shall I leave you two alone for awhile?", she asked playfully. Before Kasumi could reply, the door opened up and in walked Ayane. "Excuse me, but I would like to take over your shift now, Jocasta.", she said to Cas sternly. Seeing that her time was up, she got up from her chair and excused herself out. However, as she passed Ayane, she whispered in the same tone Ayane gave her, "Its Cas, got it!". After that, she walked out and closed the door behind her. Ayane then took her place beside Yugi where Cas was once situated. "So, what did I miss?", she asked the trio.
Outside, Yami and his friends were now cowering before the wrath of several angry females. "You mean… to tell us…", a very ticked off Helena started to say. Lei Fang continued, "The reason… you betrayed… a very good and loyal… friend like Yugi…". Hitomi finished it, and she finished it loud, "WAS BECAUSE HE WAS SHORT AND LAME TO YOU?!?!". Yami shrunk down in fear, and who could blame him? Tina shook her head in a pitying manner, and strolled right up to them all. "You never actually seen his true character, did you?", she inquired. Tea retorted, "What do you mean?". Serenity joined her new friend's side and took up, "We mean that you guys didn't see his true self, on account you went back to your old, arrogant-ignorant selves after Marik was defeated some time ago.". Duke snorted in arrogance and stated, "Yeah, so what? The fact is that Yugi was, and always is, too short and weak to actually defend himself against someone much larger then him.". Mai added, "That's right! I mean, who would want to hang out with someone that needs protection all the time?!". Helena shook her head and stated, "You still don't get it, do you?". Hitomi took up, "We don't care about Yugi's physical appearance. We look more into his character and heart.". Cas, who came in on the scene earlier, wanted a piece of the action as well. She said, "Let's look on what he's done so far, okay? Let's recap. First off all, he had endured any and all of the torment you guys put him through. Both mentally, physically, and emotionally.".
Lisa stepped in, "Plus, he endured the hits, blows, and throws from the boys over here.". She pointed to the DOA men, who still looked down a bit in shame. Helena took up, "Yet, he managed to stay the way he is now, helped us to get a better view on ourselves and future…". Christie continued for her, "Made sure we enjoy our little vacation, took on the boys head on, managed to stay conscience for some time, helped Niki escape from a volcanic eruption…". This time, it was Niki who stood up to finish it. She concluded, "And also nearly sacrificed his life to save myself, Kasumi, and Ayane!". Lei Fang inquired, "Now, tell us the truth, would you have done all that?". Now, it was the crew's turn to look guilty and ashamed. Truth be told, they knew that they would have never stayed the same like Yugi. Nor risk their lives to save someone in serious dire need. Yami said reluctantly, "Well… no. No, I wouldn't.". One by one, they all said the same thing. Tina smirked and stated smugly, "Now, you can see that Yugi is a whole lot more then you give him credit for.". Cas then spoke up, "Not only that, but nearly all of us here owe him a great debt.". Bayaman looked curiously at the woman and inquired, "What do you mean by that?". Cas smiled as she replied, "What I mean is, without Yugi coming to the island, you ladies would never be alive to have this little conversation here.". Helena asked, "What is it that you know that we don't?". Cas's smiled widened as she told re-said everything she told Kasumi, Laga, and Peorth earlier on.
Back in Yugi's room, Ayane had just finished hearing on what Kasumi and her two new cyber friends told her. "Wow.", was all she had to say. She looked down at the sleeping hero, smiled gently, and kissed his forehead. "We owe him a lot, don't we?", she whispered. Kasumi nodded, totally agreeing with her half-sister. Ayane was now in deep thought for a moment, then soon came to a decision. She looked at Kasumi square in the eyes, a serious expression on her face. "Kasumi, I have a question to ask you.", she said sternly. Kasumi was a bit surprised by her half-sister's quick change of expression, but nodded her head. Ayane took a deep breath and asked, "Would you ever forsake Yugi, in any way?". Kasumi now had a complete look of shock on her face. She never expected this question before, and neither did Laga and Peorth. After a few moments, the shock wore off. The shinobi composed herself and answered earnestly, "Never. On my honor as a shinobi, and on my very life, I would never forsake an angel such as him.". Ayane's face then broke out into a very rare warm, knowing smile. She then nodded her head and said, "I believe you. And, I'm hoping you can live up to it.". Kasumi, Laga, and Peorth had their mouths now hanging down in shock. "Does that mean that-?!", Kasumi started to say, when her sister put a slender finger to her lips. "Yes, it is. Kasumi, I'm stepping down in vying for his affection. You can try to win favor from him now, with no interference from me.", she told her shocked sibling.
"B-But, why?! You seemed to want him as much I did, Ayane!", Kasumi exclaimed. Ayane chuckled and replied, "Because, I sense deep down you really care for Yugi here. Much more then myself.". She then added, "Besides, I think he'd be better off in your capable hands. I trust you a lot more then others, to tell you the truth.". Kasumi really didn't know what to say, so she acted instead. She threw her arms around Ayane and gave her a crushing hug. "Thank you very much, sister!", she exclaimed happily. That was the very first time she called her sister! Ayane was slightly surprised, but returned the hug. "Hey, no problem. I could always search for another guy.", she told her shinobi sister. Kasumi continued to embrace her half-sister for some time, then released her. "This really means a lot to me. Thank you so much.", she said with a tear of joy coming down her left eyes. Ayane chuckled and replied, "It's the least I can do. Now, if you excuse me, I need to leave.". She got up to go, but Kasumi grabbed her wrist. I mean, when was the last time they had some sibling bonding. "Wait! Stay and talk with me for awhile.", she pleaded. Ayane looked down at her and said, "I'm sorry, but I need to go.". Kasumi demanded on why. Ayane sheepishly answered, "I have to use the bathroom now.". Kasumi blushed red with embarrassment, released her sister's wrist, apologized, then allowed her to go.
Back outside, nearly everyone was amazed on what they had just heard. "Man, we really owe that Yugi kid big time.", Leon admitted. Christie shook her head lightly and stated, "Not a kid. He's a man now.". Now that, they all agreed on. Yami declared, "Well, I'm going to do whatever I can to make it up to Yugi.". The rest joined in as well. Seto, standing near Lisa, chuckled lightly. 'It's about time they saw the light.', he thought. Cas was about to say something, when a nearby sailor rushed over to the group. "Everyone, we have some news you might want to hear!", he exclaimed. Bass stood up and replied, "Yes, what is it?". The sailor said, "We have found someone hiding in the one of the holds in the cargo bay! He's wearing a burned up leisure suit, dark skin, and also white hair that's somewhat burned.". Nearly immediately, they all knew who the person was. "Take us to him, now!", Jann Lee declared. Not wanting to deny them, for fear of losing a limb, the sailor escorted them all to where they wanted to go. In a few minutes, they were standing in front of a large, square hole. Some sailors were running about, hauling rope in the hole and yelling out some commands. "Alright, bring him up!", one of them yelled out. A giant wench that was attached to the rope started to reel it in like a fishing pole. The rope slowly ascended back up, and on the end of it… was someone that was in deep trouble. "You!!", was the exclamation told by all. Dangling on the rope like a worm on a hook was… Zack!
