Chapter Five

Dangerous Game

Kari felt he push her inside the huge building. It looked the same as always. Just like it did when she was four. There was a sudden barking as a brown and white husky ran up to her. Kari gasped as the dog jumped into her arms and licked her face. She couldn't believe that he had kept the dog, her dog, her Jewel. Tears crossed down her eyes. Kari had been sure that when she left, Pegasus would have had Jewel put down. Kari remembered the day she got her.

"Happy birthday Carmel!" Molly cried as she kissed her youngest on the cheek. "Make a wish!"

The family cheered as she blew the candles out. There was a knock on the door and Pegasus entered.

"Maxi! You made it," Molly replied as she hugged her older brother.

"Are you kidding?" He grinned as he put the cardboard box down. "I wouldn't miss any of my niece's birthdays! Happy birthday Kari,"

"What is it?" Kari asked as she looked at the box.

"Open it and find out," Her uncle laughed. He smiled secretly at her.

Kari opened the box and cried out. "A PUPPY!"

The husky her uncle had given her was called Jewel for she was Kari's greatest treasure. When Kari ran away, she had to leave the dog behind. She was sure she'd never see her again.

"She as happy and healthy as can be," Pegasus called from the stairway. Kari frowned as she stood up. Jewel barked happily at the sight of her master's return and her caretaker. "Good to see you,"

"Funny," Kari said coldly. "The feeling isn't mutual,"

"Awe! That was kind of… cold,"

"It was meant to be!" Kari hissed. "Now what do you want?"

"A duel," He answered as he walked down to her. She backed off, heading for the door.

"Forget it!"

"Then forget your freedom," Pegasus replied. Kari stopped. "We never battled Kari so there for you never won your freedom,"

"You son of a…" Kari growled as she looked at him.

"Aha! No cursing in this house,"

"What do I look like?" Kari hissed. "A golden Retriever?"

"Before we duel, perhaps some food?"

"It's too late to say I'm not hungry," Kari muttered as her stomach growled. She went ahead of Pegasus. If the place truly hadn't changed, she wouldn't get lost. "So what happens if I win?"

"If you win, you gain your freedom," Pegasus replied. Kari watched him carefully. He always had a catch to his duels. "If I win, you stay here and never run away again,"

"You're wishing away there, Pegasus!" Kari replied coldly. "Besides, you wouldn't be able to find me,"

"On the contrary my dear child," Pegasus said with an evil grin. "I've known where you were the entire time. I knew it was you with that silly baseball cap in Tokyo and you spent most of your time in Apple Gates Orphanage. I just decide that it would be best if I won you in a duel,"

Kari froze. He knew then after all, after all that time. Her hand cracked as she made a fist. Her hunger had been forgotten. Angrily, Kari turned to look at him. She reached inside her pocket and pulled out her cards.

"You want a battle, Pegasus!" She hissed. "Bring it on,"

Pegasus smiled slyly.

Pegasus led the way to the battle arena. Like on the duelist kingdom, the area was the same. Kari looked hard at Pegasus. He looked cool, meaning there was something he knew and she didn't. They separated to their posts. The moment Kari stepped onto the platform a pair of mechanical arms locked around her legs. She gasped in surprise.

"He's been planning this in a long time!" Kari thought. "WHAT RE YOU PLAYING AT PEGASUS?"

"Just an insurance that you won't go back on our deal my dear," Pegasus replied. "Now, shall we duel Kari?"

"What are your rules?"

"Does it matter?"

"Uncle Ma…. Pegasus!" Kari snarled. "Do you take me for a fool?"

"Cousin Kari?" a voice replied. Kari looked angrily at the fact this truly was her family. "Why are you here?"

"CAN WE JUST DUEL!" Kari yelled angrily. She wanted out as fast as possible. "I would like to return…"

"Where?" Emily asked in a cruel way. "Yugi and his friends are freaked out about you and Seto Kiaba… well, let's say he doesn't want to see you for a wail,"

Kari bit her lip. Was it true that she didn't have a home with him anymore? It made sense, all the hate Seto had for Pegasus, she wouldn't bet against it.

"Just duel!" she muttered. She placed her first card down. "I play Gabriel,"

"I play Silerfang and this card down," Pegasus replied making her stare at him.

"That weak a card? That's not like him. Even when I was little, he always played his best cards first. He's up to something. Good thing I have all of my strongest cards in this deck,"

"Gabriel attack!" Kari ordered. "Heaven's Arrow!"

"For goodness Kari!" Pegasus cried in surprise. "You've lost your touch. You forgot I played a card face down. I now activate my trap card Virus!"

"NO!" Kari yelled. This wasn't good. That virus card would kill of all of her cards above 1500 attack points. All of her cards were above this, all but one card. Kari lost her hope fast. Barely a minute had past and already she had already lost. Kari played the weak monster card Tiger, a tiny kitten like tiger. With the Insane Rabbit, Pegasus killed of the last hope Kari had left.
