Chapter one: Prologue

Jonouchi walked along the deserted streets towards Kaiba's mansion. He had been living with the cold Seto Kaiba for a few weeks now, ever since his enemy found out about his father and what happened when Jou went home after school. He had taken a walk around away from the mansion and he had taken too long. He was late and he knew it. He finally made it to the huge building and pressed a button that made the iron gates open. He walked inside and opened the front door. A small black haired boy tackling him onto the front steps greeted him.

"Jou-kun!! I was worried you weren't coming back!" the small boy exclaimed, clinging onto Jonouchi tightly.

"You're late," Kaiba glared at him, leaning against the door.

"Hello to ya too, Kaiba," Jonouchi glared back and picked the small boy known as Mokuba up and carried him into the house. Kaiba glared daggers into the blonde's back, but as soon as the two were out of sight, the CEO's face softened immediately.

Why do I feel so weird around the mutt? Kaiba thought, using his favorite nickname for the blonde. We're enemies, this definitely isn't normal. He shook the thoughts out of his head and started towards his office.

"Onii-chan! It's really late!" Mokuba appeared in the hallway, with Jou behind him. "Come on, can't you sleep for once? You're not getting enough sleep."

"Yea Kaiba," Jonouchi added, "Ya need your rest to beat me in duels ya know!"

"Hmph," Kaiba snorted, "You, beat me in a duel? Even if I was out of practice for three years I could still beat you."

"Yeah, yeah." Jonouchi waved his comment off. The blonde turned and headed for his room up the stairs.

"Come on Seto," Mokuba pouted, "Please get some rest?" Kaiba sighed at his little brother's cute face, and nodded.

"Alright Mokuba, I'll get some rest right after I do a little bit of work I have to finish, okay?"

"Alright!! Goodnight Seto!" Mokuba hugged his brother quickly and skipped all the way to the stairs. Kaiba almost smiled, watching his brother so happy. He watched Mokuba disappear up the stairs before entering his office, and almost growling at the huge stack of papers that needed sorting. Sorry Mokuba, but I'll be up later then I expected. And with that, Kaiba sat down and sat in his office for the rest of the night, sorting through all the papers.

Somewhere on the streets, there was a little girl wandering around aimlessly. She had a tattered and faded pink dress on, and her hair was long and blonde, with a hint of purple in it. Her eyes were dark purple, but they stared into some distant world, not noticing where the girl's feet were taking her. The mysterious girl had no shoes on, but around her neck was a silver chain that held a bright blue sapphire.

"Mo..mmy…" the girl whispered, and her feet took her through various alleyways and along various streets. She walked past the game shop where Yugi was staying up late packing boxes into the storage room. As she walked by, the lights inside the game shop turned off.

"Crap!" Yugi cursed from inside the game shop, hitting his head on the doorframe to the storage room. He walked over to the window to see what caused the outage, and saw the girl walk past. He gave her a confused look, and she just stared straight ahead. As soon as she was fully past, the lights turned back on. "That was weird…." Yugi said to himself.

"Aibou?? Why did the lights turn off?" Yami called from upstairs.

"No idea Yami, don't worry about it," Yugi called back, and concentrated on moving the boxes instead.

~Morning~

"Bye Grandpa! I'm off to school!" Yugi called up the stairs, and then he called up also, "By Yami! Behave yourself!"

"I know Yugi!" Yami grumbled from the top of the stairs, having been rudely awakened by Yugi's yelling.

"Alright! Ja ne!" Yugi called one last time and ran out the door. He was supposed to meet Anzu halfway to school and he was late. He made it to the spot in a record time of five minutes and stood waiting for Anzu to show up. Soon she was running from the opposite direction, waving to him.

"Sorry Yugi, I was late," Anzu gasped, stopping to catch her breath. Yugi laughed, knowing somehow that this would happen.

"That's okay, Anzu. I was late too, and I ran here also!" Yugi patted her on the back and started walking to school. Anzu giggled at how she thought she would miss Yugi at the meeting spot and followed him. From behind a tree, the mysterious girl watched them laugh and talk together.

"Not mommy…" the girl shook her head and disappeared behind the bushes.

~Limousine~

"Ano…thank you Kaiba, for driving me to school…" Jonouchi said shyly, feeling uncomfortable in the expensive transportation vehicle that Kaiba had so gracefully shoved him into.

"Hmph. As if I would let you walk to school," Kaiba deadpanned, remembering just this morning when Jonouchi walked out of the mansion early without breakfast announcing he was walking to school.

"It's not that hard ya know!" Jonouchi growled, sinking lower in his seat, sitting in the farthest corner away from Kaiba. The rest of the car ride was fairly quiet, and Jonouchi kept sneaking glances at Kaiba who was tapping his long fingers impatiently on the armrest. "How `bout you let me walk to school tomorrow, and see if I can beat ya there?" the blonde proposed the question quietly.

"Alright, mutt. It's a deal," Kaiba nodded and turned his head to look out the window.

Awright!! Jonouchi mentally cheered, Anything to get away from creepy Kaiba…creepy Kaiba with a nice body that is…Holy crap did I just think that?!?! Jonouchi shook his head rapidly, shaking those naughty thoughts out of his head. Kaiba watched this display from the corner of his eye with amusement.

I wonder what the mutt is thinking…Kaiba's steel blue eyes looked the blonde up and down, and found himself staring at the muscles through the mutt's school uniform, and the way his hair curved around his delicate face…What the hell? Kaiba blinked rapidly, and only saw the blonde shrinking into the corner as much as possible.

"We're here, Kaiba sir!" The driver called from the front seat. Kaiba gave a nod and stepped out of the car thankfully. He hid any emotion that he had acquired in the past few seconds and walked briskly to the entrance, leaving Jonouchi to hurry out of the car also and run to catch up.

~Classroom, Yugi, Ryou~

"Hey Yugi!" Ryou waved from his seat, since he always gets in early, as Yugi sat down in his seat next to him.

"Hey Ryou," Yugi responded, a weird dull look in his amethyst eyes. Ryou gave him a confused look before the teacher walked into the classroom, followed by Kaiba and a panting Jonouchi.

I wonder who that girl was… Yugi thought to himself, propping himself up on his right elbow and ignoring the teacher completely. He heard a faint `blah blah blah' in the background as he thought back to last night, and how the lights mysteriously went off as she passed by. She didn't look familiar at all, but he sensed something weird about her; he knew it! He heard the `blah'ing get louder, and he snapped out of his thoughts to see the teachers face right in front of his.

"Mr. Motou!!!!" She yelled, making Yugi jump in his seat in terror.

"G-gomen Mrs. Takimura!" Yugi stuttered, his eyes widening from shock. The whole class turned to look at him, and his ears and face turned a bright shade of red. She advanced her face towards his, and he shrunk lower and lower into his seat until all that was visible was his bright red face.

"What is wrong, Mr. Motou?" Mrs. Takimura asked him, her expression softening a little bit.

"Um…I…I don't feel all too well," Yugi responded truthfully, as a churning sensation began in the pit of his stomach.

"Oh my…." The teacher looked around quickly and spotted Jonouchi, "let Mr. Katsuya take you to the nurses office, she'll let you know what to do."

Yugi nodded and Jonouchi stood up and led Yugi out of the classroom and down the hallway.

"Are ya feelin' okay, Yuge?" Jonouchi asked concernedly, looking over at his best friend.

"I'm okay," the small boy responded, suddenly finding the tile on the floor to be very interesting as they walked. The rest of the walk went on in silence, until Yugi decided to look up and out one of the windows passing by. Out the clear window, he saw the girl again. She was peering in from the far right corner, and seemed to be looking straight past Yugi and right at Jonouchi. Her mouth moved to form one single word, but the small boy couldn't figure out what it was. She smiled, then caught him looking at her and turned the other way.

"Yuge??" Jonouchi's voice floated over from his right side. Yugi turned his head and looked Jonouchi straight in the eyes, as if seeing him for the first time. He stopped walking and the blonde, being concerned; stopped also.

Who…is that?… Yugi thought for a moment, searching his brain for information on his boy standing next to him. Wait…where am I? The small boy looked around quickly, seeing nothing familiar about this place.

"Yugi…what's wrong?" Jonouchi asked again, deep concern reflected in his honey colored eyes. Then Yugi felt a small jolt pass through him, and he blinked once, twice, and then stared at Jonouchi for a second.

"Jou-kun!" Yugi exclaimed, throwing his arms around his best friend. Jonouchi backed up a little, startled. "Why am I in the hallway?" the tri-colored hair boy asked, looking around in amazement. Jonouchi looked at Yugi curiously.

"You said you didn't feel well, and I have to take you to the nurse, remember?"

"Hmm…I don't think I remember that," Yugi said, racking his memory for that event that had just occurred five minutes ago. "Oh!" Yugi exclaimed, "I saw a girl in the window!"

"A girl?" the blonde asked, taken aback by his friends comment. He walked a few paces back to where the window was, and looked around outside. "I don't see a girl."

"Well, I could have sworn she was there," Yugi went over to the window also, squinting around the tiny field that was planted right outside the window.

"Yuge…are you okay? Do you have a fever or somethin'?" Jonouchi put his hand on the small boy's forehead, and detected no fever. Yugi looked at him funny, and started walking down the hallway again.

"Well if I have to go to the nurses office, lets go then!" He giggled and quickened his pace, making Jonouchi grumble and set off after the small boy. There's somethin' fishy goin' on…I just know it. Jonouchi thought, catching up to Yugi and returning the small boy's grin towards him. I just gotta figure out what it is.
