Chapter six: All those memories
Yugi ran down the block, pulling Ryou with him after school.
"Yugi?! Where are we going??" Ryou called, stumbling over his own feet to keep up with his friend.
"Kaiba's house!" Yugi said, "Kaiba didn't come to school today for a reason!"
"Shouldn't we get our yami's first?" Ryou suggested, wanting to see Bakura really bad. All he wanted to do right now was cuddle with his yami, not sprint to Kaiba's house like men were chasing them trying to kill them both. Yugi stopped so suddenly that Ryou ran right into him and knocked the small boy over and fell on top of him. "Sorry Yugi!"
"That's okay! You're right, we should go get our yami's!" Yugi took the white-haired boy's hand once more and turned the corner, running in the direction of their houses.
~
"Hmmm…" Yami sat across from Bakura, thinking over the next move he should make.
"Make your move, pharaoh! We don't have all millennia!" Bakura growled, waiting impatiently.
"I…place one card face down and summon the Dark Magician in attack mode," Yami smiled triumphantly, placing his cards on the table.
"Well, well! I'm in luck!" the spiky haired spirit smiled devishly. "I play Dark Necrofear! And also play one card face down."
Yami narrowed his eyes. He knew what would happen if he were to destroy Dark Necrofear. He decided to let the tomb robber have his fun for now. He smiled and called out his attack.
"I attack your Dark Necrofear with my Dark Magician!"
"Big mistake pharaoh!! When you send Dark Necrofear to the graveyard, it brings out Dark Sanctuary as you know, and also the spirit that lurks within. It can possess any of your monsters, and since your Dark Magician is the only monster you have; you know what happens if you try to attack!"
You forgot about my face down card, tomb robber.
The tri-color haired boy smirked, reaching for his face down card when the door was thrown open with a strong force by the name of Yugi.
"Yami!" The small boy yelled, pulling in a disheveled Ryou through the door with him. "We have to go to Kaiba's house!…Why is Bakura over, Yami?"
Yami coughed, taking his hand away from his face down card.
"He came over first! He barged in wanting to duel me," the taller of the two identical boys defended himself. Bakura snorted into his hand. "Don't laugh at me, tomb robber!"
"'Kura-kun!" Ryou spoke for the first time since they entered the house. "I've missed you!"
"I've missed you too, hikari," Bakura said, smiling slightly. This put Yami on edge since he never saw the tomb robber smile before.
Guess his hikari got to him after all. But I have the best hikari of all. Yugi…
The former pharaoh looked over at his light, inspecting the dueling board.
"He was going to win, Yami!" Yugi exclaimed, pointing at the board.
"I had a face down card that was going to destroy him!" Yami pouted, upset that Yugi could even think that the tomb robber could beat him in a duel.
"Aww, poor Yami," Yugi went over and hugged his yami tightly. This put Bakura on edge because he never saw the two so affectionate before.
"Um…" Bakura coughed loudly, making the two boys separate, "what did you barge in to tell us, pharaoh's light?"
"Kaiba didn't come to school today!" Yugi started hopping up and down on one foot.
"And why should this be our concern?"
"Because Bakura! It might have something to do with Jonouchi!"
"And how does that concern me again?"
"Bakura!" Ryou scolded, patting his cheek lightly. "We need to see if Jonouchi is okay."
The spiky haired boy growled, obviously wanting nothing to do with it. Ryou whispered something in his ear and he perked up immediately.
"Alright! To money-bag's house!" Bakura stood up and marched out the door.
"What did you tell him?" Yami narrowed his eyes at a giggling Ryou, "wait, I do not wish to know."
"Oh no, bad thoughts!" Yugi exclaimed, running out of the front door yelling "MY POOR INNOCENT MIND!"
"Now look what you did to my aibou!" Yami sighed, "He'll be as timid as ever now."
"Aw, Yami wants some!" Ryou giggled more, nudging the former pharaoh in the ribs. This comment made the yami blush a deep crimson from the roots of his hair.
"T-that's not true!" Yami yelled before dashing out the door still blushing like mad. Ryou almost collapsed on the floor laughing before following the trio all having different thoughts in their minds. Needless to say they walked on in silence for quite some time, unless you count the sniggering that was coming from the two white-haired boys.
"And here we are, Kaiba Mansion," Yami sighed, tilting his head to look up at the towers that seemed to bend and loom over them, casting shadows over the sidewalk.
"Let's go!" Yugi declared bravely, even though there was hesitation in his steps as he neared the gate. He went up to them and pressed the button.
"What is it?" a voice sounded through the mini speaker.
"A-ano…we would like to see Mr. Kaiba please," Yugi said timidly.
"Who are you?"
"Friends from school," Ryou added happily.
"Alright, come in."
The gates opened, creaking and signaling it needed replacing. The four boys walked in and up the walkway to the front doors of the Kaiba Mansion. A maid opened the door for them before they could even knock and ushered them inside. It was getting late and the boys were told to sit in the living room to wait for Mr. Kaiba.
"This place could double as my house," Ryou commented to break the silence. Yugi let out a laugh and agreed.
"This place is way too big," Bakura growled, "Jonouchi has it too good."
"Hey, be grateful that Jonouchi has a home at least," Ryou scolded his yami.
"A home he doesn't remember," Yugi reminded the two.
Suddenly the four boys heard footsteps coming down the grand staircase. They all turned to see Kaiba descending slowly followed by Mokuba who looked like he hadn't slept in days.
"What do you four clowns want?" Kaiba asked coldly, glaring at all of them.
"You weren't in school today, Kaiba," Yugi piped up, standing up from the place he was sitting.
"So? What's it to you?"
"We wanted to know if Jonouchi came back yet," Ryou added, standing up as well.
"Surprise, surprise," Kaiba smirked, "I'm bringing him home tonight."
"Really Onii-chan???" Mokuba perked up immediately.
"Really Kaiba!?" Ryou and Yugi exclaimed together excitedly.
The CEO rubbed his temples from the sudden outburst of noise.
"You four can stay here and eat with us as long as you behave and stop being so noisy," The brunette walked out the door with one of his guards to get Jonouchi.
"Sorry about Seto," Mokuba smiled tiredly, "he's lost his nerves with Jonouchi coming home and all."
"It's alright Mokuba," Yami smiled understandingly. They all sat with Mokuba on the couch and he turned the TV on for them. They were shocked at how many channels existed on the Kaiba's TV and expressed their shock by all exclaiming different things at once.
"Calm down guys!" Mokuba laughed, "there's never anything on anyway."
"What's with all this modern technology?" Bakura muttered, cursing at the TV in Ancient Egyptian.
"I find it rather amusing," Yami chuckled watching the tomb robber get angry at the `pictures in the box'. Mokuba laughed at Bakura also, and eventually Ryou and Yugi joined in as well making Bakura even angrier.
"You're just too cute, Kura!" Ryou giggled, kissing his yami's cheek. This seemed to calm Bakura down a little, but he got another look in his eye. Ryou noticed this and started to back away slowly. "K-Kura?? Don't look at me like that…I know what you want…not right now!"
"C'mere hikari!" Bakura growled low in his throat and lunged at the white-haired boy. Ryou squealed and jumped off of the couch quickly before the tomb robber could catch him. Mokuba, Yami and Yugi watched as Bakura chased his hikari around the house; listening to Ryou's pleas for Bakura to stop chasing him. Finally, Ryou made a last desperate attempt to escape by running up the staircase with his yami in hot pursuit.
"That…was interesting," Mokuba giggled, too innocent to know what Bakura desired. Ten minutes later they were watching a Go tournament (I don't own Go…) and they heard a shriek that belonged to Ryou.
"The tomb robber finally got to him…" Yami muttered to Yugi who blushed a little but nodded. Mokuba looked at them with a confused look but Yami just laughed and shrugged it off. It was five Go tournaments later and they still hadn't heard from Ryou or his yami at all.
"Man that guy made a really good move," Yugi commented, his eyes glued to the TV. He was fascinated by the game Go even though Yami never understood why.
Then again, his hikari liked all sorts of odd games. Yami only liked duel monsters but it was Yugi's nature to be interested in most games that existed in the world.
I guess it's one of the reasons I'm attracted to him.
Yami mused over this while Yugi pointed out all the moves the other player could have countered with to keep his opponent at bay.
At that moment, Kaiba walked in with Jonouchi and a little girl at his side.
"Seto!!" Mokuba exclaimed, jumping up from the couch and hugging his older brother. "Jonouchi-kun!!" Mokuba hugged the confused boy as well.
"H-hey," Jonouchi smiled, patting Mokuba on the head.
"Hello mommy's friend!" the girl smiled and waved at Mokuba. The raven-haired boy looked down and gasped. It was the angel in the window!
T-that's…I can't believe it…oh my god…
Aria tilted her head at the boy and smiled.
"You gave me my name!" Aria smiled brightly and hugged Mokuba.
"Y-you know about that?" the boy asked, surprised.
"Yup! I saw through the window what you did. You're really talented you know," Aria nodded to emphasize her point.
"Thanks Aria," Mokuba smiled at the girl he proudly named. Kaiba raised his eyebrow at this exchange.
Mokuba gave that girl her name? How is that possible? Is that why he left the table that night? Well that makes sense.
Jonouchi also looked confused.
"So that's how you got your name, huh Aria?" the blonde smiled and patted her on the head.
"Yes, mommy! I like this boy," Aria smiled back up at Jonouchi warmly. At that point everyone turned to stare at what the girl had just said.
"Mommy?" Yugi, Yami and Mokuba asked simultaneously.
"Yeah," Jonouchi laughed, smiling, "I'm her mother…if that fits somehow."
"Hey. Where are those two devils?" Kaiba asked referring to Ryou and Bakura. Yami coughed and Yugi blushed a light pink.
"Bakura chased Ryou up the stairs!!" Mokuba said helpfully, still oblivious. The CEO growled and strode up the stairs angrily. A few moments later he came back down the stairs with Ryou and Bakura, holding them by their ears.
"That must be painful," Yami whispered, wincing himself.
"Don't do that in my house again," the brunette scolded, "do it in your own house if you please but not here, understood?"
"Understood," Ryou replied apologetically. Bakura only curtly nodded his head, which earned him an extra yank on his ear.
"Dinner is ready Mr. Kaiba," one of his maids informed him, retreating into the kitchen.
"You're lucky I'm letting you stay for dinner," Kaiba said to the two white-haired boys. They all entered the room and took their seats at the huge oak table. The table was already set, but something was different this time.
"Hey, Seto," Mokuba asked his brother, "weren't the utensils blue?"
"Yes, but this SHOULD have been the silver room so I got them switched," Kaiba shrugged, sitting down at the head of the table. Little did he know…
"Hey…Mr. Kaiba, right?" Jonouchi asked without shyness in his voice at all.
"Just call me Kaiba, m-Jonouchi," Kaiba said.
That was close. I almost called him a mutt. What would he think of that? Probably hate me. But…don't I want him to hate me? Oh, it's too confusing. It's making my head hurt.
"Yeah, Kaiba. Anyway, my fork…is blue," the blonde looked down at his spot and held up the fork.
"Damn cook…can't even switch utensils properly," the CEO muttered, planning to get a new cook the next day.
"Don't worry about it, I have my own," Jonouchi looked down at the fork he managed to pry from his hand and put in his pocket. He put it on the table with his left hand and started eating clumsily again.
"Would you like someone to help you?" Kaiba asked, noting Jonouchi's frustration of not using his other hand.
"I'll help!" Aria offered and started to feed Jonouchi with his fork. Yugi watched them both and sighed. They did look perfect for each other, like they were destined to be and all that crap Yami and Isis preached about all the time. One look at his yami and he knew he felt and thought the same thing. Ryou hadn't spoken since the incident earlier and kept his eyes glued to his food as if he'd never seen it before in his life. Bakura kept flicking pieces of food at Kaiba until he nearly snapped and almost bodily threw the tomb robber out of the house. There was silence for a very long time. Everyone seemed interested in inspecting their silver silverware and wondered what they looked like blue. Jonouchi compared the two forks closely, trying to find a resemblance. Suddenly a voice echoed through his head
We use manners here, mutt.
That sounded like…Kaiba. But…what does that have to do with anything? Jonouchi pondered this while everyone seemed to shift around uncomfortably in the dead silence. Kaiba amused himself by sending out glares to anyone who dared to glance up at him. Finally the food was cleared and the dessert was brought out.
"We had the cook make blueberry pie because we knew it was your favorite," Mokuba smiled at Jonouchi.
Well…at least I remember that I guess…wait, did I know that or do I only know it because Mokuba said it? Man…this whole amnesia thing is messin' me up.
Another scene wormed its way into his mind and flashed before his eyes.
"Hey Jou-kun…what do you want for dessert?" An energetic Mokuba called up the grand staircase.
"Pie," Jonouchi called back. Mokuba looked puzzled and asked what kind. Jonouchi responded with blueberry because it was his favorite. At the table the cook brought out a blueberry pie the size of a pizza pie. Kaiba noted how happy it made Jonouchi and had it made once a week.
Jonouchi shook his head quickly and smiled back at Mokuba.
These memories make no sense…it's as if I knew these people my whole life but I just don't recognize any of them. Except Kaiba. He…just looks familiar. Like he's supposed to be special or something. I feel so weird! His glares don't affect me…and although he acts cold…I saw emotion in his eyes the day he came to see me…what the hell am I mumbling about!?
The blonde accepted his big piece of blueberry pie gratefully, picking up his silver fork but then forgetting he couldn't eat well. Aria energetically offered to help him again and he accepted her offer. He glanced around at everyone chatting lively now. The dessert must have lifted their spirits greatly. He let Aria feed him in silence and his eyes locked on the back of Kaiba's head. The CEO was talking to Mokuba about something and hadn't turned around for a while.
"Open up mommy!" Aria said, waving her hand in front of his face.
"Oh, sorry sweetie," Jonouchi said quickly and opened his mouth obediently. Was he just staring at Kaiba? Almost impossible to believe. He didn't even know him…yet. What would happen when he remembered?
I really hope it's soon. I want to remember so badly. What happened to me anyway?
This question kept coming back to him. At random points during the day he found himself pondering this question quite often.
Suddenly the big and tall CEO stood up out of his seat at the head of the table, causing silence to settle like thin layers of fog over the table.
"I want to announce, that you boys can stay here and get a ride to school in my limo for tomorrow, that is if you want to," Kaiba nodded, ending his sentence and sitting back down. Yugi cheered and Bakura sent suggestive winks and looks to Ryou which made his hikari blush a bright pink.
"Jou-kun," the raven-haired boy walked over and took Jonouchi's hand. "Let's show you to your room so you know where it is."
The way Mokuba said his name…made something else flash through his mind that made his head hurt. He put his hand to his head and followed Mokuba out of the room with Aria in tow.
"Did you see that?" Yami asked his hikari who nodded in response.
"See what?" Kaiba asked puzzled at the looks everyone was giving him, but taking care not to show it.
"Jonouchi. He's having flashbacks already," Ryou explained, "All these familiar scents and sights are filling his mind and releasing memories."
Releasing memories?
Kaiba thought this over carefully.
Does he remember me??
