Chapter five: Hate or Love?

[ Jonouchi stood in the middle of nothingness.

"What the heck is going on?" he asked himself as he stared around himself and only saw darkness.

"Mommy!" Aria's voice sounded, echoing.

"Aria? Where are you??" The blonde yelled starting to panic. He ran in one direction and felt the ground give out from underneath him. He was falling…falling…falling into nothing.

What's going on here? Where am I? Why am I falling??

Below him Jonouchi saw a something that sparkled. He was falling towards it quickly.

Wonder what that is…

He finally reached it and found out it was a silver fork. He stared at it in bewilderment and grabbed it before it went out of his reach.

Silver fork?… Is this symbolic somehow??

There were more objects that were sparkling coming up quickly. He stared around in wonder and saw all types of silverware, followed by simple household objects. Then a roar resounded through the empty space he was falling into. A Blue-Eyes White Dragon flew up beside him and nuzzled his hand.

"Hey there Blue-Eyes," Jonouchi said automatically, petting the dragon's head lovingly. On his other side, a Red-Eyes Black Dragon nuzzled his side where his broken rib was. Surprisingly, he didn't feel any pain.

Both dragons gave another roar and left his side, flying up to where he fell from.

"Wait! Don't leave me here!" Jonouchi cried, reaching his hand up as if to reach one of the dragons. Suddenly he hit ground very roughly, causing him pain. He sat up slowly, rubbing his head and looking around once again. It seemed he fell right into a living room. There was a chair facing away from him in front of a fireplace that intrigued him. He crawled closer and the chair turned around suddenly revealing Seto Kaiba.

"Hello mutt," Kaiba smirked, leaning forward in his chair and holding out a dog collar. Jonouchi screamed and closed his eyes. ]

Jonouchi woke up suddenly with Aria sleeping right next to him. He sighed in relief.

That was one freaky dream!

Jonouchi thought to himself, checking to see if anything was abnormal. He looked to his left side where Aria wasn't and saw a single silver fork.

Okay, that's just plain scary. Was that there before? Maybe Aria materialized it for me. I really hope so!

He looked up into the sky to see it still filled with thousands of stars. The sky was turning a lighter blue so he assumed that morning was approaching quickly.

I wonder if we're still under the invisibility spell?

The blonde wondered to himself, settling back down and closing his eyes. Maybe he could catch a few more hours of sleep before the sun rose.

Next to him, Aria opened her eyes slowly. She sensed something was wrong in her sleep and forced herself to wake up just in case something was wrong with her mother.

"Mommy?" Aria whispered, looking up at Jonouchi who has his eyes closed.

"Hm? Aria? Why are you up so early?" the blonde questioned, looking down at her sleepily.

"I sensed something wrong mommy, are you okay?" Aria asked, her amethyst orbs full of concern.

That's right…Aria has those freaky mystical powers. Of course she can sense I had a bad dream.

"Well Aria, I had a bad dream," Jonouchi explained, patting Aria on the head lightly.

"Bad dream?" Aria asked, looking confused. "That's not good right?"

"Right, honey. You see, bad dreams are when you fall asleep, and your subconscious conjures up images for you to see. Some of them are bad, and those are called nightmares."

"Oh," the little girl said, snuggling closer to Jonouchi. "I'll make the bad dreams go `way mommy,"

Jonouchi smiled, "thank you sweetie." He closed his eyes once more and tried to fall back asleep. He suddenly remembered the silver fork that was clenched in his left fist. "Aria?"

"Hm?" Aria looked up at the blonde sleepily. Jonouchi couldn't help but smile a little at how cute his daughter looked.

Waiiiiit a sec. Am I actually warming up to this mother thing? I mean, I know it's impossible but…the title is kinda nice. I'm happy she has someone to look up to. What happens after this, though? I can't be her mother forever. That would be lying. Oh, I'm supposed to be asking her a question…

"Did you make this fork appear?" Jonouchi asked, holding out the silver fork to the little girl, watching it glint in the first rays of the sun. Aria stared at it for a second and then shook her head slowly. "You sure? You didn't??"

"Nope! That's a weird lookin' fork!" Aria commented. The blonde looked at it more closely and saw that the tips were curved in and were sharp. It also had peculiar patterns circling it and it wasn't dull silver like the other forks. This fork shone brightly and even blinded Jonouchi for a second.

"Well then, there's somethin' freaky goin' on here," Jonouchi concluded, suddenly wide-awake.

"Mommy?" Aria questioned, confused. Jonouchi sighed.

Guess I gotta tell her that I'm goin' back now. This is gonna break her heart.

"Aria, hun…I have to go back to the hospital," the blonde admitted, looking into the little girl's eyes. Aria's eyes watered up instantly, and her bottom lip trembled dangerously. "Oh, please don't cry, baby…" the blonde pleaded, holding her close with his good hand.

"You can't leave mommy!" Aria cried out suddenly, latching onto him protectively.

"Aria, I have to heal. It wouldn't be good for your mommy's wounds to get infected, would it?"

Aria shook her head while sniffling.

"Well, if I don't get proper treatment they might. You understand…right? I don't want to leave you," Jonouchi shook his head quickly, kissing Aria's forehead. "You are a very sweet little girl, and my daughter."

"Yes, mommy!" Aria said happily and smiled, her tears drying up immediately. Jonouchi chuckled and patted Aria on the head affectionately.

"Help me stand up, will ya? We gotta make a trip to the hospital."

"Okay mommy!" Aria stood up and gripped the blonde's free hand with both of her little hands and tugged hard. Jonouchi was able to stand upright after a while although he had no idea how. He put his arm around Aria's shoulder and they started their trek back to the hospital.

~Kaiba Mansion~

"Mokuba, you have to get to school!" Kaiba yelled up the stairs. He had gotten hardly any sleep last night because he was up all night comforting Mokuba. He had no idea his little brother loved the mutt so much.

Guess he just got attached.

"I don't want to go, Seto!" Mokuba called back.

"Are you even dressed?!" Kaiba yelled again, guessing the answer before his brother could reply.

"No!"

"Get dressed, NOW!"

"You can't make me!!!"

"Want to bet?!" Kaiba growled in frustration. His brother always put up a good fight. He pressed a button on his shirt collar and talked into it in a low voice. He counted in his head,

One…two…thre-

"BIG BROTHER!!!!!!" Mokuba screeched, as shuffling sounds were heard from upstairs, then a crash, then silence. Kaiba crossed his arms triumphantly as his right hand man Donny came down the stairs carrying a very put out Mokuba, all dressed and ready for school. "I hate you Seto," Mokuba sulked as Donny grabbed his school bag and carried him out the door.

"It's for your own good! You can't miss school," Kaiba called after him, shutting the door. He himself was going to skip school today, much to the dismay of his staff and Mokuba. He picked up the phone placed conveniently next to the staircase and dialed the hospital.

"Sorry Mr. Kaiba, we haven't gotten Jonouchi back yet," The owner of the hospital said exasperatedly.

"You idiots better find him," Kaiba snapped and hung up.

Where has that mutt gotten off to? He can't have gotten far and I have all my men working to find him. I've involved almost everyone yet…he remains missing. There must be someone else involved.

The CEO went into the kitchen and went to the microwave. He stuffed some ingredients into it and pressed the `scrambled eggs' button. A few seconds later he had fresh eggs.

That comes in handy when my cook goes on vacation.

He ate in silence, being the only one in the huge room. He sighed softly, and wiped the cold exterior off his face. He only did this when absolutely no one else was home and accepted these precious hours gratefully.

Sometimes I despise being the head of KaibaCorp.

Kaiba thought some more to himself over the next half hour, picking at his food and glancing at the clock. It was almost 8:00 A.M.

"Damn it all. I have feelings for the damn mutt!" the brunette yelled into the empty room.

How could I? I'm the cold Seto Kaiba! I have feelings for someone? Let alone the mutt! I can't tell him. He probably hates me. Because I'm so cold to everyone, he hates me. Oh god, I can't face him now. I have to hide it! He can't find out or I'm done in for my life.

Seto Kaiba was just about to stash those feelings somewhere far away, probably near one of his feet, when the phone rang. He growled and picked it up with such force the receiver fell to the ground with a clatter.

"What!?" he barked into the phone.

"M-Mr. K-Kaiba…we've f-found Jonouchi," the hospital owner spoke into the phone shakily.

"What?! When!?" Kaiba yelled trying to force himself to calm down but his heart wouldn't stop fluttering.

"J-Just now. He just turned himself in. He looked in good condition b-but there was a girl with him."

"Alright, I'll be there in five minutes tops," the CEO said and hung up without waiting for a reply. He pulled on a jacket quickly over his blue sweater and told Karl to get his ass in the car immediately. He directed Karl to the hospital and they went.

~Hospital~

"Jonouchi! Where have you been?" One of the doctors exclaimed as the blonde was rushed into his room and examined for new cuts and bruises. He still clutched the fork in his hand.

Why did I bring this along?

Jonouchi thought to himself, perplexed. He tried unclenching his hand to let the fork fall but his hand wouldn't obey his command. He decided to ignore it for now and let his head fall back on the comfortable pillow he missed so much. It almost reminded him of another pillow, in another room he used to sleep in. Thinking about it further hurt his head so he stopped even though it still nagged him.

"Jonouchi, is she with you?" a nurse asked, bringing Aria in next to her.

"Yeah, let her in," Jonouchi smiled, waving Aria over.

"Mommy!" Aria squealed, running to the blonde's side. All the doctors and nurses in the room looked at the two oddly before going back to what they were doing. "You okay now mommy?" the little girl asked, starting intently at Jonouchi.

"I'm fine, Aria," Jonouchi smiled at her. She smiled back and their talk was interrupted by a crash in the front office.

"I don't need your fucking help! I know his room number already!" a loud voice barked and footsteps were heard coming quickly down the hall.

"That's scary, mommy," Aria whimpered, moving closer to Jonouchi. Jonouchi's door swung open with a bang and Kaiba stood there. He strode over to the blonde's bed in five long steps and glared at him.

"What happened?" he demanded.

"What do you mean?" Jonouchi asked, holding Aria close to him.

"Why'd you disappear and who is that girl!?" the CEO demanded again, glares alternating between Jonouchi and Aria. The little girl whimpered more, withering under Kaiba's stare.

"Lay off her, would ya?!" Jonouchi snapped, "she didn't do anythin' to you!!"

Kaiba opened his mouth and then stopped in mid-silent-sentence. The mutt had just talked back to him. The mutt had just defended that girl!

"You meanie!" Aria said, gathering her courage and making a stand against the towering CEO, "You can't talk to my mommy like that, meanie head!"

"Aria, calm down sweetie," the blonde whispered soothingly, holding an infuriated Aria close to him.

Kaiba just stood there in shock of what just happened. First the mutt defied him, then this small insignificant girl called him a…he cringed mentally…meanie head.

I like the mutt…no I can't remember that now…that will just make me all mushy and sweet! I don't like that girl, though. Who is she? Why does she call the mutt her "mommy"?

"Jonouchi, you're coming home with me tonight," Kaiba said bluntly.

"What?! Why?!" Jonouchi gasped, holding onto Aria tighter.

"Because I have legal custody over you, that's why."

"How can you?" the blonde asked, wondering how he came into this predicament.

"Because I--" Kaiba stopped in mid-sentence once again. He couldn't tell Jonouchi anything horrifying about his past, as the doctor clearly told him.

"It seems that Jonouchi is scared to remember some of the things in his past. Don't rush him into remembering and try not to tell him anything that might scare him"

Damn doctor.

"Huh?" the blonde asked, looking at the dazed look that crossed the CEO's face. The brunette shook his head forcefully.

"Nothing, Jonouchi. Forget it. I have someone at my house that wants to see you really bad. You'll come back to my house tonight and…you can bring your little friend too," Kaiba said with a slight wince. That girl really got on his nerves for some reason. Also, he just had this bad feeling about her. He couldn't put his finger on it, but something was definitely wrong.

"If you'll excuse me, I have some important business to attend to," the CEO said and turned abruptly without waiting for an answer and stalked off.

"Who is that?" Jonouchi asked one of the nurses quietly.

"Oh, he's Seto Kaiba. He's the owner of Kaiba Corporation. He's been legally taken care of you for the past few months," the nurse whispered to him, shivering a little. "A cold one that Seto Kaiba is."

Seto Kaiba, huh? That guy really is cold. He has like, emotionless eyes. It's kinda freaky lookin into those. But the first day he came here…I saw emotion in those eyes. It was like…he was a totally different person!

"Mommy…can I stay with you?" Aria asked timidly. Jonouchi nodded, and waved off all the stares he got when she stayed past visiting hours. He was becoming deeply attached to the girl, even though he just met her. There was something about her, which pulled him towards her like a magnet. He couldn't quite figure out the feeling, but he liked it.

Guess my next stop is Kaiba's house.

~End~

Next Chappie Jou goes to Seto's house for the first time after his accident!
