Chapter four: Every heart loves

~

The limo carrying the four worried boys…make that three worried boys and one CEO in denial…arrived at Domino Hospital.

"We're here, Kaiba sir," the driver Karl said from the front seat.

"Thanks, Karl," Kaiba nodded and ushered everyone out quickly. They all entered the building and ran up to the desk.

"We're here to see Jonouchi Katsuya," Yugi said to the lady, sticking his head over the counter and pulling himself up with his arms so he could see. The lady behind the desk looked over the four boys carefully, and noted that one of them was Seto Kaiba.

"Sure, hun. He's in room 204. Go to the second floor and make a left."

"Thanks a lot miss!" Honda thanked her gratefully and they set off towards the elevator.

Yugi pressed the small plastic button that stood a little bit over his tri-colored head and the elevator doors opened. Kaiba was growing impatient, he wanted to know if the mutt was okay and he wanted to know this instant. He started tapping his foot impatiently, making the elevator shake a little.

"Kaiba, please! We don't need the elevator breaking down on us," Otogi scolded, folding his arms and tapping his long, skinny fingers against his arm.

Looks like Dice-boy is impatient as well. Kaiba smirked, mimicking what Otogi did and found it worked quite well. The elevator made a sound and opened its doors to the second floor. Otogi and Kaiba nearly burst out at the same time, turning to the left and looking for the room.

"Hey guys, you passed it," Yugi shook his head, putting on a small smile.

"Damn," Kaiba cursed under his breath, turning around and walking casually back to the door.

Yugi turned the door handle and pushed the door open. Kaiba was the first one to step into the white hospital room. He saw the bed, but was shocked with the person sitting in it.

"Oh, Jonouchi. Looks like you have visitors," a nurse set up his lunch tray, smiling.

"Thanks, Katie," the blonde smiled.

"J-Jonouchi?" Yugi asked timidly, approaching the injured boy slowly.

"Well, that's what they call me," Jonouchi smiled and laughed, but immediately stopped when his face contorted in pain.

Kaiba stayed where he was and surveyed the mutt. The blonde started eating the meat on his plate clumsily with the fork in his left hand. He actually missed his mouth a couple of times. Yugi offered to help him and the other boy gratefully accepted.

The mutt definitely isn't left handed. I watch him eat every night!…I really hope I didn't say that out loud. The CEO coughed and moved to Jonouchi's other side.

"Hello! Am I supposed to know you as well?" Jonouchi giggled and looked Kaiba straight in the eyes. The brunette's deep blue eyes betrayed his emotions and displayed the shock and hurt that he felt inside. Jonouchi…the mutt…didn't recognize him at all.

"He doesn't recognize any of us, Kaiba," Yugi said sadly, feeding the blonde another piece of his meat.

Honda sighed, he was upset his best friend didn't recognize him the slightest bit. Otogi started twirling his hair between his fingers compulsively. Kaiba's eyes wandered down to Jonouchi's waist where there was adhesive tape pulled tightly over some wound no doubt on the right side. The mutt's arm was slung in a sling so it rested against the wound in his side. The CEO's eye wandered up to the blonde's scratched face and up a little more to the bandage constricting the movement of his beautiful blonde locks of hair.

"Um…would ya mind tellin' me where I would know you from?" Jonouchi asked after swallowing a piece of meat.

"We're from your school, Jou. I'm Yugi…remember?? Duelist Kingdom…and Battle City?"

The blonde looked confused, and shook his head lightly so not to cause more pain.

"Sorry, I don't remember."

Kaiba had had just about enough of this. He narrowed his eyes at the mutt and glared his worst stare.

"You can't tell me you do not remember this stare. I gave this to you every day of your high school life!!"

Jonouchi shook his head sadly, although highly intimidated by the CEO's glare. Kaiba growled. What will it take to get him to remember?? This is really pissing me off. Suddenly, the door burst open. A very frantic Ryou ran in followed by an out of breath Bakura.

"Ryou?" Yugi looked at Ryou questioningly.

"We heard about the news! We rushed over right away!" Bakura nodded at Ryou's statement, still trying to catch his breath.

"Who're they?" Jonouchi asked, confused. Ryou almost fainted from shock and held on to Bakura tightly.

"He doesn't remember us, `Kura!" the boy wailed, clutching onto Bakura's white shirt.

"Man, I'm sorry!" Jonouchi apologized, "I wish I knew all of ya. You're all really nice…but the doctor said my memory is gone."

"You almost gave my hikari a heart attack!! Breathe, Ryou," Bakura patted Ryou on the back lightly encouraging him to take deep breaths.

"We're sorry you don't remember us, Jonouchi," Yugi said sympathetically, "we really hope you get your memory back soon."

A different nurse walked in and pushed the curtains aside to let more light in. She told everyone that visiting time was up and Jonouchi needed his rest for tests tomorrow. She shooed them all out of the room and Jonouchi fell back on the pillows with a frustrated look in his honey colored eyes.

"Why can't I remember?" he mused, thinking really hard. He drew a blank, and became even more frustrated with himself.

"Can you remember anything, hun?" The nurse asked, fluffing his pillow a little and making him comfortable.

"I…remember one thing," the blonde admitted, as a picture of the mysterious little girl flashed before his eyes. How come she's the only one I remember? Is she special to me or somethin'? This confused the boy even more. "I remember a little girl…I think I saw her right before…my accident."

"I wonder who she is," the nurse asked to herself, taking Jonouchi's tray away.

"Me too," the blonde sighed, taking his medication and closing his eyes and falling into a deep sleep.

A little later, the little girl poked her head through the open window with the curtains drawn aside. Seeing no one around, she pulled the rest of her body onto the window and jumped over, touching the ground lightly and not making a sound. She turned and saw Jonouchi in the bed, sleeping peacefully with his mouth slightly open. She giggled when she saw a trickle of drool make its way down his chin. She crept over to the bed and put her small hand on his uninjured arm sadly.

"Mommy," was all she said and started tugging him, trying to get him out of the bed.

"I don't wanna go to school mommy…" Jonouchi mumbled, oblivious to his petite intruder.

The girl let go of the blonde's arm, becoming frustrated. She snapped her fingers without thinking and Jonouchi levitated off the bed, hovering there and waiting for another command. She waved her arm over her shoulder towards the window and jumped out, the sleeping blonde following her unaware. Suddenly clouds covered the sky, shielding the two from the blazing sun. The girl crept along the shadows, making sure she and her `mommy' weren't seen at all. They arrived in an abandoned alleyway, and the girl made a bed out of old clothes and blankets for her mommy before lowering him down gently. She sat down next to him and waited for him to wake up.

"Huh?…this doesn't feel like my bed…" the blonde mumbled, opening his eyes sleepily and blinking a couple of times. No white ceiling. No maroon curtains. No windows at all. Where the hell am I!??! Jonouchi screamed in his mind. He started to panic when he saw a small girl sitting next to him. It was that girl from before!

"Mommy," the girl said simply, and smiled at him.

"Who are you? What's your name?" Jonouchi demanded, so confused it made his head spin.

"A-Ari-a," the girl whispered, remembering who gave her that name.

[ "That's it!" Mokuba scribbled down something on the piece of paper and left the room. The little girl floated near his window and opened it slightly, letting the rain splash against the windowsill. She peeked her head in and looked at the picture. It looked just like her! Below it, she saw what was written as her name. Aria, the rainmaker. ]

"Aria, huh? Cute name," Jonouchi scratched his head, looking around him.

"Where are we?"

The girl shook her head, lowering her eyes to the ground.

"Can you speak?"

Aria shook her head again, twisting the fabric of her dress in her tiny fingers.

"Here, let me help. My name is Jonouchi…or at least that's what people tell me. Repeat after me. Jo-nou-chi," the blonde made the syllables noticeable so Aria could follow.

"Ja-na-chi," Aria repeated with difficulty.

"Not aah, but oh. See? The syllables are pronounced differently. Put your lips together in an `O' shape. That helps," Jonouchi smiled as Aria struggled to pronounce the difficult word.

"Jo-nou-chi," She spelled out.

"Great! You got it!" the blonde's face lit up, and he would have clapped if both of his hands were free. She smiled and her face lit up as well, and she clapped. "Do you know anything else?"

"Mommy!" Aria burst out, pointing at Jonouchi. She smiled again, feeling confident.

"But Aria, I'm a guy. I can't be a mother," the blonde tried to explain, wondering how she thought he was her mother.

"No?" Aria tilted her head to the side, her amethyst orbs welling up with tears.

"No…oh Aria! Don't cry!" Jonouchi exclaimed, not knowing how to calm the girl down. Guess I'll just have to go with it! "Alright! I'm your mommy."

"Yay!!" Aria clapped her hands again, her tears vanishing immediately. "Mommy!!" She pointed her small finger at him again.

From the way she was speaking, he could tell she was a fast learner. She picked up his words immediately and added them to her growing vocabulary. As Aria chatted on endlessly with her newfound vocabulary, Jonouchi racked his brain for any remnant of his memory. Why could he only remember this girl, and one he's obviously never seen prior to his accident.

What caused my accident anyway? Did she cause it? I wonder…

Suddenly, they both heard police sirens screaming in the distance and getting closer. A screech was heard, and the slamming of a car door.

"Oh no!!" Aria exclaimed. "They can't take my mommy away!" Jonouchi looked around confused. This definitely wasn't the hospital, so they must be looking for him to take him back.

"Jonouchi! Jonouchi Katsuya! Are you here? Say something!!" A voice called, being magnified probably by a megaphone.

Should I call out to them? They could take me back to the hospital but…what about Aria? She might get in trouble for taking me away…I can't let that happen to this innocent girl!

"Shhhh mommy, they won't find us with this," Aria raised her hands up high and brought them down in one swift motion. Then she crossed her arms over her chest and muttered something. The blonde didn't feel any different, but he sensed that something had just happened. Some policemen came running past the alleyway and one actually stopped to look straight at them. Jonouchi was expecting the man to yell something out but he just shook his head and kept on running.

"How strange," Jonouchi commented. Aria giggled at the blonde's lack of understanding and decided to explain it to him.

"We are under an invisibility spell silly!" Aria shifted closer to her mother, "No one can see us while this spell is cast."

"You know spells?" Jonouchi exclaimed, staring at his newfound daughter in wonder. She nodded at him enthusiastically, proud that she could do things that others couldn't.

"I know lotsa spells! That's how I got you here mommy! I levisated you all the way!" Aria grinned and jumped up and down in joy. Jonouchi sweatdropped at her pronunciation of `levitated'.

"Um Aria, I think you mean levitated," the blonde grinned as well, ruffling the small girl's hair with his free hand.

"Oh! That's what I meant!" Aria giggled and rested her head against Jonouchi's shoulder. The shouts and the sound of footsteps died down and all was quiet again. Aria had dozed off on the blonde's shoulder and he was starting to feel a dull pain in his side.

Damn it…I had medication I was supposed to be on. If I don't get some soon…my wound could get infected, or maybe never heal!

The blonde looked down at Aria's delicate face and noticed how she smiled faintly as if she knew he was watching over her. She opened her eyes sleepily and looked up at Jonouchi smiling.

"Hello mommy!"

"Hello, Aria," Jonouchi smiled back, although his heart sunk at the thought of leaving her. Unaware of the blonde's thoughts, Aria jumped up and stretched happily.

"What do ya wanna do mommy?"

Jonouchi thought of telling her he had to go back, but decided against it. He didn't want to hurt the happy girl's spirits and decided he could stay only for tonight and tell her in the morning he had to go back.

-Kaiba Mansion-

Mokuba and Kaiba sat at the dinner table waiting for the cook to serve the dinner. Mokuba was sniffling after crying nonstop after he got home from school and finding out about Jonouchi's condition. To make him stop crying Kaiba told him they could go tomorrow to see him and gave him a big sugary lollipop. That always calmed Mokuba down. At the present, Kaiba noticed how empty the house seemed without the mutt around. He glared at his blue silverware that should have been silver and waited for the food.

Damn cook…what's taking him so long? Dinner was supposed to be served point 5 seconds ago! Hmph. I think I'm overreacting but…the absence of the mutt from the house is…making me angry. I can't admit that I care for him, because that would be admitting I have a weakness. Seto Kaiba has no weaknesses!! Seto Kaiba cares for no one!…except Mokuba. When did I start referring to myself in the third person?

Mokuba had something a little different going on in his head.

Jou-kun…I hope you're alright. I really wish you didn't lose your memory because now you won't even recognize me and that's gonna hurt me a lot. I can tell it hurt onii-chan too because he wasn't himself today after school. I only wish that Seto would confess that he has feelings for you. I saw it even before you moved in with us. We could be one big happy family! Oh Jonouchi, please get your memory back soon…

The small boy let out a big sob, and Kaiba looked up just as the cook rushed in with their dinner. All through dinner was silent, until the phone conveniently placed next to Kaiba's seat rang. The CEO picked it up before the first ring even finished.

"Hello?"

"Mr. Kaiba, sir! The patient Jonouchi has gone missing!" the head of the hospital informed Kaiba frantically about what happened after he left.

"What?! How could you let this happen?!" Kaiba started fuming. This was not his week. His company was running slow and the paperwork was building up, and on top of that, the mutt gets into a car crash and goes missing! "Find him immediately!"

"We're trying sir! We've searched anywhere near the hospital and there's not a sight of him anywhere!"

"Well try harder or I'll make sure all of you are going to be looking for new jobs by next week!" Kaiba yelled and slammed the phone down on the receiver.

"What's wrong, Seto?" Mokuba asked, still sniffling into his dinner. Kaiba sighed, this news would be even harder on his little brother.

"Mokuba…Jonouchi has gone missing from the hospital."

"What?!" Mokuba yelled. He let out another huge sob and shoved his food roughly across the table to Kaiba and buried his head in his arms. The CEO sighed heavily. This was going to be a long night.
