Chapter three: Who am I?
As the sun rose early in the morning, the first rays of sun intruded into a certain person's room. The said person moaned in protest and buried himself under the sheets in an attempt to hide from the natural light wafting through the curtains. The alarm next to the bed starting ringing, jumping around on the desk to wake up the blonde in the bed.
"Alright! I'm up!" the blonde sat up in bed and yawned, scratching his head tiredly. He threw the covers off of his scantily clad body, with only a pair of black striped boxers on, and walked into his private bathroom that came with the room. He looked at himself in the mirror, splashing his face with water. Oh that's right! The boy with the honey colored eyes thought to himself, Today's the day I can get away from Kaiba and walk to school!
He dressed himself in his school uniform merrily, humming to himself as he descended the grand staircase and approached the kitchen. Inside, he heard the faint rustling of paper, and realized Kaiba gets up around 5 A.M. every single day. With a long sigh, he pushed the doors open and sat at the table. Kaiba didn't look up from his newspaper, as the cook served the blonde scrambled eggs and toast.
"Thank you," he smiled at the cook gratefully and picked up his blue utensils and dug in hungrily. From behind his newspaper, Kaiba rolled his eyes.
Stupid mutt…even eats like a dog. Kaiba could only guess how sloppy Jonouchi was being; he didn't even have to turn his head a centimeter.
"See ya at school Kaiba!" Jonouchi gulped down his orange juice quickly. Kaiba only gave a nod to acknowledge he even heard the blonde at all, and Jonouchi grabbed his backpack and ran out of the mansion, much to the protesting of the guards.
"Ah…fresh air," Jonouchi breathed in deeply, hitching his backpack up onto his shoulders and exiting through the gate of the Kaiba mansion. He purposely left early so he could get to school on time. He checked his watch just to make sure. Alright, 6:30. School doesn't start until 7. Plenty o' time! He strolled down the block, his hands in his pockets. From behind a bush, a little head poked its way out.
"Mommy…" The figure whispered, jumping from out of the bush gracefully and mimicking Jonouchi's movements. He yawned, and stretched his arms behind his head, and she did the same.
Huh? Feels like I'm being followed… The blonde turned around quickly and saw nothing behind him. Hmm…that's strange… He turned back around and the girl jumped out from behind a street lamp and followed him once more. Jonouchi came to a street crossing which put him on the same side of the street as his school. Damn! I can't shake the feeling…He turned around one more time, and saw the girl behind him. She looked up at him and smiled. Their eyes locked for a millisecond before the blonde stumbled backwards, into oncoming traffic. A wave of numbness and confusion hit him like a gust of wind. She looks…she looks so familiar…why?…why does she…what am I doing here?…What's wrong with me? A car turned the corner and swerved into the lane Jonouchi stumbled into. Time seemed to stand still as the girl tried to get the blonde's attention as the car swerved towards him at top speed.
"Hey! Watch where you're going, kid!" the man yelled out of the car and drove right into Jonouchi. There was a sickening snap heard as the blonde was flung backwards about ten feet away, and hit his head on the pavement, knocking him unconscious.
"Mommy!!!" the little girl yelled, tears springing into her dark amethyst eyes. The driver stopped, and got out of his car to see Jonouchi sprawled out on his back.
"Oh my…" A lady said, walking by the scene in astonishment.
Jonouchi's POV
Everything is so dark…all the colors of the rainbow are swirling around in front of my eyes.
I hear faint murmurs above me, but my eyelids are too heavy to lift. I slowly drift back into the darkness, letting it overpower me and cushion my pain.
A sudden jolt went through my body as I realized I haven't been breathing. I took a deep breath as the voices began to grow louder.
"We found a pulse!"
"Heart rate slowly increasing…"
"Someone get him into the ambulance…quickly!"
The voices start to fade away again as it pains me to breathe. There's something wrong with my chest…I can't move without hurting it.
Who was that girl? Why was she following me? Why did she look…so familiar?
All these questions roamed around in my mind, confusing me and making my head hurt even more.
"Major concussion, broken rib, several cuts and bruises from the fall…"
A voice above me started listing off a bunch of numbers that confused the hell out of me. Where the hell was I?
….Who am I?
"Mr. Katsuya! Please stay awake!" another voice called from above, but I couldn't answer.
Who is Mr. Katsuya? Are they talking about me? What's my name?
"Don't fall asleep! Keep your head above the water, Jonouchi!"
"Slipping into unconsciousness…"
"Jonouchi!"
"Heart rate decreasing…"
The voices above me faded away once again as I found myself absorbed by the darkness. It was comforting, and told me not to worry and to sleep it away. I'll answer my questions after a nice sleep.
Normal POV
Kaiba emerged out of the limo and scanned the grounds. The mutt wasn't there.
Hmph. Must be in the classroom already. The CEO thought to himself, carrying his schoolbag at his side and stepping up the marble steps into the high school. He opened the door to his classroom and endless chattering reached his ears. He grit his teeth against the racket and hauled himself to his seat and sat down. He scanned the room once again, and found Jonouchi wasn't in his seat or over with his friends. He had the urge to go over and ask them where he was, but he was THE Seto Kaiba. That would ruin his reputation…or worse, show that he actually cared about the mutt. Since when do I care?! Kaiba growled mentally.
"Okay, in your seats kids! Class is starting," the teacher walked in and closed the door, and there was no sign of Jonouchi anywhere. Yugi and the others seemed to notice this as well, and shot glances at Kaiba whenever they could.
This is not good. The CEO concluded. He would have to talk to the mutt's friends at lunch after all.
-Lunch-
"Oi! Kaiba!" Honda yelled over the chattering in the crowded lunchroom. Kaiba winced; his ears were too sensitive for this crap. Him, Yugi and Otogi made their way over to the towering CEO, avoiding knocking other peoples lunches on their way.
"Where's Jonouchi?"
The thing about Otogi is, just like Kaiba and Jonouchi, he asked very straight out and blunt questions. The brunette shrugged, obviously wanting to ask the same question.
"You mean…you don't know where he is?" Yugi asked quietly, his voice full of concern.
//What?? Jonouchi is missing?// Yami asked through their mind link, feeling his hikari's concern.
/Seems like it…Kaiba doesn't know where he is at all./
"I let him walk to school today," Kaiba was saying.
"Walk? You shouldn't have let him!" Honda said angrily.
"Why not? A mutt needs a good walk every now and then," Kaiba replied, shrugging again. Otogi had to hold Honda back as he fought to get to Kaiba and take a swing at his arrogant face.
"Don't talk about my friend like that! Jerk!" Honda yelled, calling the attention of the whole cafeteria.
"Nothing to see here guys, move along!" Otogi yelled to the crowd forming. Yugi made a small effort to push the crowd away as Honda slowly stopped struggling against Otogi.
"Hey, Yugi!" A boy called from the crowd that was dissipating. Yugi turned around and spotted the boy who called his name. His eyes widened a bit as the huge boy pushed his way over.
"Oh, h-hey Masaki," Yugi said, putting on a smile to hide his nervousness; although it wasn't working.
"Wanna duel me? I have my deck right here," Masaki showed Yugi a bulge in his pants pocket that took the form of cards.
"Sorry Masaki, but I'm kind of busy right now…" Yugi trailed off, trying to think of another excuse to not duel the intimidating classmate. The brunette snarled,
"You've been avoiding me for the past week! What are ya? Scared?"
"I…I left my dueling deck at home," Yugi said quietly, actually speaking the truth. This morning it hadn't occurred to him to actually place his deck into his schoolbag with everything else. He was surprised Yami didn't notice it.
"You actually left it at home, or are you lying to me?" Masaki lifted the small boy up by his shirt collar roughly. Kaiba looked at Otogi, and Otogi looked at Honda expectantly.
"Hey buddy," Honda spoke up, "get your filthy hands off my friend."
Masaki turned around to face Honda, and dropped Yugi to the ground. The small boy proceeded to crawl behind Kaiba's legs, and sit there trying to become invisible. To Kaiba, this faintly reminded him of Jonouchi.
Man, I miss the mutt…as much as I hate to admit it. Kaiba folded his arms over his muscled chest and narrowed his eyes at the intruder of the groups `where is Jonouchi' discussion.
"S-Seto Kaiba!" Masaki stuttered, as if seeing the towering CEO there for the first time. He looked from Honda glaring at him, to Yugi cowering from him, and back to the brunette glaring daggers through his heart. "S-sorry Yugi!" Masaki backed away and ran from the group.
"Well, that was a pointless, unentertaining interruption," Kaiba commented.
"Indeed," Otogi said, "now can we get on with the discussion please?"
"Oh yeah," Yugi said, crawling out from behind Kaiba and standing up, straightening his uniform, "I think we should go look for him after school. Together," All three boys looked pointedly at Kaiba.
"Alright!" the CEO snapped, rolling his eyes. "I'll help look for the mutt."
"Stop calling him that!" Honda growled, shaking his fist at Kaiba. The brunette just rubbed his temples, obviously irritated by Honda's outbursts.
"I will if you stop yammering," Kaiba replied, "you're giving me a headache."
"Guys, let's stop fighting and try to think of a way to locate Jou-kun," the small boy spoke up, tugging on the edges of Honda and Kaiba's jackets.
"Alright. Plan A: Rescue Jonouchi is under way!" Honda declared, throwing his fist into the air.
What an idiot. Kaiba thought, angered that he had to work with idiot number 2 and 3 of the trio; Jonouchi, Honda and Otogi.
-Domino Hospital-
Jonouchi groaned, struggling to open his eyes. The sunlight was streaming through the thin maroon curtains and hurting the blonde's eyes through his closed lids. His hand moved to his head quickly, which started throbbing immediately. Damn headaches!! Jonouchi thought, wincing. He then proceeded to engage in battle with his eyelids, forcing them to open and see his surroundings. Eventually he emerged victorious, and opened his eyes slowly for the first time since the crash. He blinked, noticing even that hurt a little. He couldn't move his head to see all of his surroundings so he settled for what his peripheral vision could see. The room was plain white, excluding the maroon curtains that were failing to keep the light out. A ceiling fan hung above him and he got entranced in the motions of it for a second before exploring the room more. In the corner of his eye he could see a tray and noticed that he was hooked up to IV's and a heart monitor was next to him.
"Hello Jonouchi," A man walked into the room and smiled at him, "you're awake I see."
"Yeah, Sir. But tell me, who is Jonouchi? Is that me?" the blonde asked quickly, straining to remove his head off of the very comfy pillow.
"Don't move too quickly," the doctor warned, then added, "don't you know who you are?"
"No," Jonouchi admitted sadly, "I wish I did."
The doctor was shocked. He had heard that this boy suffered a major concussion to the head but never expected him to come down with amnesia. He wrote this down quickly in the boy's file.
"You don't remember a thing? Like your friends or where you live?"
Jonouchi thought hard for a moment, but the only response he got was a stabbing pain in his head.
"No, sir. My head really hurts," he admitted truthfully. Then a faint pain was felt in his side as he shifted to get more comfortable. Man…what happened to me? I feel so achy all over. Why can't I remember? "Actually, so does my side."
"Well that is to be expected. You broke a rib there, son. You also suffered a major concussion in your head. You will feel sore for the next couple of weeks at least," the doctor inspected Jonouchi for anything unusual since he was brought in this morning. "We didn't expect you to wake up until much later. You've got a strong will Jonouchi."
"Really? Thanks," the blonde smiled up at the doctor. Even the small smile caused him pain, and he collapsed back onto the pillow tiredly. The doctor inspected a bandage on Jonouchi's head that he didn't notice was there before.
"We have to change the bandages on your head and your side. We're going to put your arm in a sling to restrict the movement you have to let the fractured rib heal, okay? It might hurt a bit," the doctor told Jonouchi as nurses carrying adhesive tape and anti-bacterial cream rushed in. The blonde closed his eyes as one nurse propped him up slowly, and another pulled the adhesive off of his side gently. They rubbed cream on the wound and replaced the tape and put his arm into a sling that rested against the fractured rib side to prevent movement. Another group of nurses took the bandages off of his head and replaced them. They wished him to heal fast and left quickly.
"So tired…" Jonouchi yawned, despite his body protesting.
"Sleep, son. We'll think of a way to recover your memory somehow," the doctor reassured the blonde, and closed the curtains fully and shut the lights before leaving the room. After a while Jonouchi's blissful snores resounded through the hospital room. There was a swish of the curtains and a little head full of purple-blond hair emerged through the curtain. A pair of amethyst orbs emerged after them, full of sadness.
"Mommy…" the girl said sadly, taking one last look before vanishing from the curtain.
-After School-
"Hurry up Kaiba! You're too slow!" Honda yelled, struggling to put on his shoes and run out of the high school at the same time. The CEO walked past him calmly, slipping on his shoes and walking out of the high school before Honda could. "You show off!" the brunette snapped angrily. Yugi helped Honda with his shoes and slipped his own on. Otogi just shook his head and walked after them.
"Where do we start?" the boy with the tri-colored hair asked. They walked down the block when they saw a policeman and several police cars next to a car with a dent in the front.
That's very suspicious…looks like a dent from a human body if I've ever seen one. Kaiba turned direction and walked towards the police.
"Kaiba? Hey, Kaiba! Wait up!!" Yugi yelled and ran after Kaiba. Honda and Otogi looked at each other and shrugged, following the two boys.
"Sir, I demand to know what happened here," the CEO said abruptly, striding over to the nearest policeman he could find.
"Oh, Mr. Kaiba. There was a man who plowed right into a young man, walking to school no doubt…"
"What did he look like??" Kaiba asked, forcing himself to believe it wasn't Jonouchi, although something in his gut told him…
"He was tall, had lotsa blonde hair and brown eyes---"
"HONEY colored," the CEO corrected without even thinking.
"Excuse me?"
"Never mind, continue," Kaiba said, masking any emotions that just crossed his features.
"---Brown eyes, and was identified as Jonouchi Katsuya by his school ID," the policeman concluded and looked at Kaiba strangely. "Do you know him?"
"Where was he taken?" the brunette asked hurriedly, ignoring the other question.
"Domino Hospital," the policeman replied and went back to his work. The CEO wavered in his spot slightly. Jonouchi, the mutt, was hit by a car. He was hit by a car walking to school and was hospitalized. That thought kept running through his head over and over until he thought his head would explode. He's okay…he's okay…everything is going to be okay… Kaiba repeated over and over like a mantra.
"Kaiba?" Otogi asked, unnerved by the way he was acting. They watched him walk by without saying a word, and taking out his cell phone.
"Donny? Can you come pick me up one block away from the school? What?…you're doing a job? Well then get Karl to come down here and drive me! Okay then," Kaiba hung up, and motioned for the group to come over to him.
"Jonouchi is in the hospital," Kaiba said finally, his voice cracking. Yugi covered his mouth in surprise.
"You can't be serious!" Honda burst out, even though he knew deep down that it was true. The limousine that Kaiba had just called pulled up and stopped short.
"Come on, we're going to see him," the CEO said before disappearing into the car. The three boys followed him into the limo, too worried about Jonouchi to notice the elaborate decorations and beautiful black leather interior.
"Karl, drive to the Domino Hospital," Kaiba ordered, and the car sped off in the direction of the hospital.
