Chapter eight: The deadly beacon
"Jou-kun!!" Mokuba exclaimed, running into the blonde's room.
"Huh?" Jonouchi asked sleepily, sitting up with his eyes half-open. He looked next to him and saw that Aria was still there.
"Breakfast is ready," the raven-haired boy smiled, leaving and closing the door behind him. The blonde looked over the bed and straight into the alarm clock.
"What?! It's 6 A.M!? Can't I go back to sleep?…" He muttered to himself, waking Aria up and stumbling down the stairs to eat with everyone. He stumbled into the room and looked up to see everyone - even Mokuba - dressed for school and eating breakfast.
"I hope you're not going to school looking like that Jou-kun," Yugi commented cheerfully, munching on his cereal.
"School?" Jonouchi asked confused, drawing a blank in his mind.
"Yeah Jonouchi, school," Ryou looked up from his bagel and stared at him, "you do have to go…"
"No he doesn't," Kaiba commented from the head of the table.
"I'll have cereal please…" Jonouchi mumbled, collapsing into a chair and slumping forward onto the smooth polished table. The CEO's left eye twitched for a second but it disappeared as quickly as it came. The cook brought over the blonde's favorite cereal and he lifted his head off the table reluctantly and began to eat. The whole room was silent, mostly because Yugi was the only one chattering and he was now silent, watching Jonouchi with a genuine look of concern.
"Jonouchi, you are not going to school today," Kaiba said, more of a command then a statement. The blonde just nodded, continuing to eat his cereal slowly. He still wasn't able to move his arm as much as he wanted to but he had gotten better at feeding himself with his left hand.
"You guys can ride in the limo with me," Mokuba smiled at the four boys who had finished eating. They nodded, getting up and walking past Jonouchi, each of them wishing him a fast recovery or a get well soon remark.
"Jonouchi, will you be okay here with Aria? I will go to school but I'll stay home if I must," Kaiba said, when it was just the two of them in the room.
"I'm okay," the blonde mumbled, "need some sleep is all…"
"Well if you need me, call me at any time during the day and I'll come straight home, no matter what I'm doing at the time," The CEO assured him, snapping his fingers for the cook to clean up.
"Awright…" Jonouchi yawned and put his head down on the table again. The cook bustled in and cleared the table of all the plates and bowls, hurrying back into the kitchen.
"Jonouchi?" Kaiba asked, walking over to the exhausted blonde, "Jonouchi??"
He had fallen asleep. He was snoring quietly and when Kaiba peered closer he noticed how tired the blonde really was.
I didn't know he was this exhausted. What did he do that made him like this? Bad dream maybe? Well no matter what, I have to get him up to his room to rest.
Kaiba pondered for a second what he should do, and then hesitantly pushed Jonouchi's chair back and eased him into his arms. He was surprised at how light Jonouchi actually was. The CEO automatically brought the blonde close to his chest like a baby, and walked out of the room towards the stairs.
"I'll be there in a second Mokuba," he told his younger brother who was waiting at the door for him.
They make such a cute couple…
Mokuba dared not say this statement out loud, but he smirked inside himself at the thought of those two together. It would probably be all arguing and some aggressiveness between the two of them. Nonetheless, it was a cute match and Mokuba was determined to get them together as soon as Jonouchi recovered.
Kaiba meanwhile, carried the blonde up the stairs and into his green room. Aria was still sleeping soundly in the bed, thumb in her mouth and blonde-purple hair spread out all around her on the pillow. He placed Jonouchi carefully onto the bed and pulled the covers over him, tucking him in and making sure he was comfortable.
"Aria, sweetie…" Kaiba shook Aria gently to wake her up. He had no idea he could use that tone of voice to children.
"What is it, Mr. Kaiba?" Aria asked sleepily.
"I'm going to school, it's going to be just you and Jonouchi in the house. If you guys need anything, and I mean anything, feel free to call one of my staff or my cell phone. All of the numbers are listed in the family room next to the phone."
"Okie Dokie Mr. Kaiba," Aria yawned, closing her eyes again and falling asleep instantly.
I hope she remembers all of that. Jonouchi knows most of it anyway.
Feeling satisfied that Jonouchi would be safe, the CEO walked down the steps and out to the limo with the rest of the group and they drove to school.
~Few hours later~
Jonouchi opened his eyes finally and glanced at the clock quickly.
It's 12. Noon. I slept for a long time. Wonder when Kaiba gets back.
The blonde reluctantly got out of bed and went to the closet automatically. He realized he was still wearing his green robe from his bath the other night.
Kaiba didn't have the decency to change me into pajamas?? Although…changing another guy is kinda weird…
Jonouchi shook his head and pulled some clothes on quickly. He went into the bathroom and washed his face, staring at himself in the mirror.
What was up with that dream last night? That was really freaky…
For a moment, he saw the person that was supposed to be him in the flashback. He looked more serious, his features more chiseled out, his blonde hair a little darker. He saw a shadow behind him, a taller one, that moved into the light and he saw dark brown hair and ice-blue eyes.
Huh?…
He turned around quickly and saw no one. He looked back into the mirror to see the shadow had disappeared.
"Freaky," was the only word he said out loud.
"Mommy!" Aria's voice rang through his room and floated into the bathroom.
"Aria?" Jonouchi asked, poking his head out into the almost too-green room.
"I made you lunch mommy! Why's your hair so wet?" Aria questioned, tilting her head in curiosity.
"I was washing my face sweetie," the blonde smiled, taking a towel and drying his face and hair off. She led him down the stairs and into the dining room. Sitting on the table was a single plate with a sandwich on it, stuffed with everything you could imagine. Next to it was a plate of freshly baked cookies.
"Do you like it mommy?" Aria asked, smiling up at the stunned blonde.
"I love it, honey!" Jonouchi bent down and hugged her. "Thank you so much for making this for me."
"It was fun!" Aria exclaimed, "I got to make the flour go BOOM!"
Jonouchi stopped suddenly and held Aria at arms length.
"What do you mean by `BOOM'"? He asked, almost afraid to know what the answer was.
"I was testin' out my powers and I tried makin' the flour float! And it stopped halfway and went BOOM!" she clapped and squealed happily. Jonouchi sighed. He knew what she meant by `BOOM'. He led her into the kitchen and stopped at the sight before him.
White was flung everywhere; it covered the mahogany cabinets and the marble tables. It splattered over the floor and a thin white mist clung in the air. There was some light brown mixture on the ceiling even, and Jonouchi hoped it was only cookie mix. The deli meat Aria used for his sandwich was left out and that even had a thin white powder coating on it.
"Aria…sweetie…next time ask for help if ya need it," the blond sighed, calling for the maids to clean it up. He sat down at the table and started to eat his sandwich. Aria also made herself something and was chomping away hungrily. The phone started ringing. Jonouchi jumped and looked at it as if it was alive. He put his hand on the phone, and hesitantly picked it up.
"Hello, Kaiba residence."
"Is this Mr. Kaiba?" a low deep voice asked from the other side.
"No…it's not. Can I take a message?" Jonouchi replied, getting a conveniently placed pad and pen ready.
"I would really like to speak to Mr. Kaiba," the voice persisted.
"Well both Kaiba's are at school right now, I'll need to take a message," Jonouchi replied stubbornly.
"Okay, tell him that a man by the name of Hector called to discuss business…he knows how to reach me."
"Alright I'll tell him, bye," Jonouchi hung up the phone and wrote down the message. He thought nothing else of it and finished his sandwich quickly.
"Aria, sweetie, I'm gonna watch some TV," Jonouchi told her, standing up and making his way to the living room which harbored the huge flat screen television. He picked up the remote from the floor and sat on the big comfortable couch that was red like the rest of the room. "Kaiba needs better themes," Jonouchi commented, flipping to the news channel.
"Reports have come in that crime has been steadily increasing in the Domino area…experts say that their only lead is a man in his mid 40's, features are black hair, brown eyes, a little heavy, around 5'11 and goes by the name of Hector Ransbee."
"That's too much of a coincidence," Jonouchi muttered, watching as a picture of Hector popped up on the upper right of the screen.
"And also," the news reporter continued, "There has been a little boy kidnapped from his home yesterday around 5 P.M. His name is Toby and he is six years old. Features are medium length blonde hair, baby blue eyes, on the slimmer side and around 3'10 in height. Any information you find please contact our hotline at…"
"Poor kid," the blonde said sadly as a picture of the boy appeared on the lower left of the screen. "It's such a shame these things always happen to innocent people."
"Wait! We have news reporter Sally live on the scene with some groundbreaking news."
The screen switched to the reporter who was obviously Sally, standing in front of the little boys house.
"Thank you, Alice. Police here say that they've found a clue to where the kidnapper will be next. On a sheet of paper taped to the back of the front door it reads `the beacon will show the way at sundown.' It appears to be written in blood…"
"That is just really freaky," Jonouchi said, changing the channel quickly and watching some cartoons to keep his mind off of the puzzling message. He didn't know why, but somehow he thought he knew what the kidnapper was talking about, but he couldn't put his finger on it. He glanced at the clock, 1 P.M.
Kaiba doesn't get home for another hour and a half…
Jonouchi groaned to himself, and lay down on the couch, stretching out and falling asleep with the TV on. Aria walked in and quietly shut the TV off.
"Poor mommy," she whispered, finding a blanket and draping it over him, "he's so tired! Wish I could help…" she pondered for a moment, and finding nothing to help and having a short attention span skipped off merrily to bug the guards for candy.
"I'm home!" Kaiba yelled an hour later, Mokuba close behind him. He looked over to the couch to see Jonouchi sleeping peacefully with a brick-red blanket pulled over him.
That is so cute…and I need better themes for my rooms…
Kaiba thought more to himself and checked the pad in the dining room to see if there were any new messages. Surprisingly, there was. He read the scribbled note and shook his head.
"Hector never knows when to stop…" the CEO muttered, walking back into the living room just as Jonouchi was waking up.
"Kaiba?…" the blonde asked sleepily, rubbing his eyes and sitting up, the blanket pooling around his muscular frame.
"Mr. Kaiba sir!!" Aria squealed, running into the room and latching onto the brunette's leg. He looked down and patted the small girl on the head gently.
"Hello Aria."
"Can I have some candy Mr. Kaiba?!" the little girl squealed some more, dancing around in a frenzied sort of way.
"Uh…sure sweetie," Kaiba dished out some candy he always carried around for Mokuba and handed it to the hyper girl.
"Thank you sir!" Aria hugged him and ran off to do only she knows what.
"I wonder how long I slept for?" the blonde asked himself more than the CEO standing there. He looked at the clock. "At least for a good hour," he yawned.
"Jonouchi, did someone call for me?" the brunette asked.
"Yeah, some Hector guy," Jonouchi nodded in the direction of the dining room, "it was really weird cuz there's this Hector guy supposedly going around committing crimes and then I saw a kidnapping on TV."
"Well that's…interesting…" the CEO muttered to himself. He knew what Hector was up to. He was a man he used to do business with, until he found out Hector was stealing money from his company. He severed all ties with him and had him fined. Now, he had actually given him a call, and Kaiba really didn't want to know why.
"Do you think it's the same guy Kaiba?" Jonouchi asked curiously.
"Maybe," he admitted, starting to pace in a small circle. If it was him, he could have his `public relations' people go out and have him either arrested or murdered on the spot. If it wasn't then he was going out to kill someone that was not exactly innocent but not guilty of the crime. "What was his last name?"
"Ransbee…or Ransber…or something like that," the blonde tried to remember, "I was kinda sleepy so I wasn't payin' much attention."
Well, that idiot's last name started with an R. He never told me his full last name. All I know was that he had blonde hair and dark eyes. He even might have changed his looks.
This was getting complicated. As if he didn't already have his hands tied with Jonouchi's memory loss and a new hyper child running around the mansion.
"I hate it when my life becomes a mess."
"Onii-chan!" Mokuba called from upstairs.
"Coming, Mokuba!" Kaiba called, nodding to Jonouchi and heading up the stairs.
"Man, Kaiba really has it rough," the blonde said, feeling a little bit of pity for him.
Little did he know…if he had his memory, he wouldn't feel a thing for Kaiba's problems.
Dusk settled over the city and Jonouchi looked outside the window in his room and noticed a lighthouse a fair distance away.
"Hey I didn't know there was a lighthouse near us," the blonde said aloud, noticing it wasn't on yet. He watched the sunset until it was completely dark out and then noticed the lighthouse started up.
The beacon will show the way at sundown…
It was then Jonouchi noticed that the light was directed straight at his room.
~End~
