Chapter 4: A Little Understanding
New Years Eve 2004

The silence surrounded them for the better part of five minutes. Joey kept his head down, thinking and wondering if Tristan wanted it to be blurted out that simply. Tristan was staring at a similar spot on the carpet but his eyes glanced to his left to read Joeys expressions. Yugi seemed relatively shocked, not knowing what to say. Tea was the one to break the silence.
"Oh my god." she then lunged across the group and hugged Joey and Tristan simultaneously. "Why didn't you tell us? You jerks! This is so great!"
Joey and Tristan visibly relaxed, letting out a sigh of relief.
"Well, we didn't really want it getting around. If it gets back to my dad I'm done for." Joey explained as Tea finally pulled away and sat down by Yugi.
"Like we would tell if you didn't want us to." Yugi seemed offended.
"Told you." Tristan whispered to Joey.
"Sorry guys, I didn't mean to upset you." Joey shrugged, what was done, was done. "It doesn't matter anymore though; Kaiba knows."
"Kaiba knows?" Tristan looked panicked.
"Yeah. He found out after school today." Joey explained.
"How?"
Joey gave Tristan a pointed look, telling him the answer the others would never know.
"Oh." he whispered.
"What else did Kaiba say Joey?" Yugi pressed on.
"He said to enjoy my last weekend as a 'free butch' then he asked if I was the bitch." Joey laughed at this, "Basically he said he was gonna mull it over this weekend and come up with something on Monday. I told him I'd do anything if he didn't tell. I think that was a bad idea."
"Yeah." Tristan agreed. Joey shot him a glance but made no more conversation about it.
"Well, we'll be there beside you guys! Don't worry!" Tea beamed at the pair and they brightened slightly.
"You guys are the best."

The weekend went too fast for 'the gang'. Especially Joey. Tomorrow he would find out what evil Kaiba has conjured.
They all said goodbye to Yugi, and departed. Tristan walked Joey home, as usual. On this particular day, neither spoke, until they reached Joeys apartment building.
"I am sure whatever Kaiba thinks of won't be that horrible." Tristan tried to comfort Joey.
"Yeah. I bet you're right." Joey didn't really believe what he was saying, he just didn't want Tristan to worry either.
"You're dad home?"
"Yeah. It's Sunday so he's probably still passed out from going to the bar last night." Joey answered, looking up at his apartment window.
"Then I'll see you tomorrow?" Tristan seemed to doubt whether Joey would go to school tomorrow based on the aforementioned.
"Yeah, I'll be there." Joey smirked at Tristan. "Later Trist."
"Later babe." Tristan laughed.
"Aww I'm blushin'." Joey turned around and entered the apartment building, looking back once as Tristan turned and headed down the road.
~*~*~
Joey set his alarm to be up extra early on Monday. He usually woke up at seven, giving him nearly an hour to get to school. Today, he woke up at six thirty. He made breakfast and showered before his father woke up. His father ate the breakfast that Joey had prepared and then headed out to work. Joey cleaned the breakfast dishes and grabbed his backpack.
He headed out the door at seven, exactly. He would get to school by seven thirty, if he walked slowly. He took his time passing from street to street. He was early enough to day to avoid the little old man with scooter that he had come to know so well.
Finally reaching his school he walked in to find Kaiba. He knew Kaiba would be there because Kaiba was just like that. He decided to start with the library and go from there. As he reached the library he noticed his friends were already at school.
"So, is this when people get here? I don't think I've been this early since the first day." Joey joked as he walked up to them.
"Yeah, it's called being on time." Tristan joked back.
"Ha. Ha."
"Morning Joey," Tea chirped.
"Hey Tea, Yug,"
"I don't get a specified 'hello'?" Tristan asked.
Joey pretended to think for a second, "No, no you don't."
"Bitch." Tristan responded.
"So, I was right, you are the bitch." Joey turned around at the sound of Kaibas voice.
"All right Kaiba, what shall I do?" Joey asked.
"You don't have to do this Joey. We'll always be behind you." Yugi whispered.
"Yes, that is how he likes it." Kaiba's crude comment sent Joey spiraling into a fit of anger.
Joey punched Kaiba in the nose. His nose, obviously broken, started bleeding and Kaiba fell to the ground.
"You'll pay for that runt." Kaiba warned as he got up and went to the infirmary.
"Ah, shit, why did I do that?" Joey asked rhetorically.
"Eh, forget it, he deserved it." Tristan answered.
"I know, but now he's gonna kill me." Joey banged his head on the wall.
"Stop, stop." Joey listened and stopped hitting his head.
"Maybe you should go home for the day, before you know, you get in trouble." Tristan suggested.
"Nah, I might as well face the music. I'll see you guys later, I'm going to go check on Kaiba."
"Okay."
Joey left his friends and walked down the stairs to the nurses office. He was surprised Tristan hadn't tried to follow him, but was glad too. He walked into the nurses office, the nurse was currently out and he saw Kaiba sitting on the 'sick bed'.
"You aight?" he asked.
"I'm not saying you punched me." Kaiba said.
"What?" Joey sat down on the chair next to the bed.
"I'm not telling. For two reasons: One, I don't want people to know I got punched by a runt like you. Two, I don't really want to see you expelled."
"You, don't want me expelled? Are you really Seto Kaiba?"
"Yes, it's me." Seto rolled his eyes, "I admire that you stood up to be blonde. It is, perhaps, the bravest I have ever seen anyone." Joey was beginning to question if Seto was in a state of conscious thinking. "Yes, I am of sound mind. Don't go thinking I'm crazy." Joey looked at Seto, shocked again.
"So, what do you want me to do because of . . . you know?"
"Well, I had a plan, but now I think that I should intensify it. After all, you did punch me." Seto rose his head, it had been leaning back against the wall. "So, for the next . . . well, as long as I feel like it, you will be my personal slave. You will cater to my every whim, and I can make you do anything I want. Got that?" Joey nodded. "You will also be staying at my mansion." he added.
"WHAT?! I can't do that Kaiba! My dad doesn't even let me go to Yugi's, how would he let me go to your house? Besides I don't want to live with you!" Joey had stood up by now and was in a state of panic.
"Calm down mutt, the living part will only be until I get sick of you. Then you will carry out the rest of your sentence simply at school and sometimes on the weekend." Kaiba explained.
"I . . ." he weighed his options. Kaiba had power, he could easily tell Joeys dad. Then, if is dad knew, so he'd get beat and never be allowed to have anyone over or go anywhere ever again. Live with Kaiba, be a prisoner in your own home. "How are you going to convince my dad to let me go anyway?"
"Money, is very persuasive." Kaiba handed Joey a briefcase which had been laying next to him on the bed. "Take this to your father, tell him I would like an audience with you for a while. Don't be specific. There is plenty of money in there to shut him up for a while though." Kaiba slouched back down as the nurse came in.
"Mr. Wheeler, may I help you?" she asked. She knew Joey quite well because he was always in so many fights, and saw her more than he saw his teachers.
"Not today Ms. Honey, I just came to check on Seto." He forced a smile and picked up the briefcase.
"You didn't happen to cause this little mishap did you?" she gave him a knowing look.
"Not this time Ma'am." Seto spoke up. "Those doors really need to be automatic, or see through. You never can tell when someone is coming through them." Seto smiled as best he could in his condition.
"Have a good day Ms. Honey." Joey nodded and ducked out of the nurses office.

"Father, I'd like to go stay with Seto Kaiba, I'm sure you've heard of him he owns Kaiba Corp. Anyway, I'd like to visit him for a while."
"Why should I let you go visit your little friend for more than a night?" his father asked, clued to a rerun of 'Bonanza'.
"He did give me this to give to you. I hope it can persuade you. But, if you don't want it -" Joey began walking away.
"Want what? What are you blabbing about?" he still didn't look away from his mark.
"This Sir." Joey set the briefcase on his fathers lap and opened it. He hadn't realized how much money Kaiba gave him.
"Sweet Gooka mooka." his father finally looked at something other than the nineteen inch television. "You may go." he declared. "You are to have him come get you mind, I'll not be carting you all over town."
"Yes Sir." Joey began for his room to pack. He didn't know exactly when Kaiba was coming for him, so he wanted to be prepared.
A knock was heard on the living room/kitchen door just as Joey zipped his suitcase. He went to the door and saw a very conspicuous man standing there.
"Joey Wheeler? I am here to take you to Mr. Kaiba. Please follow me." he declared in a very professional voice.
"Yeah, let me just get my stuff." he turned around and grabbed his belongings. "Bye Sir."
"Yeah, yeah bye."
"Mr. Wheeler, allow Gustavo to carry those for you Sir. From now until your departure we are your personal hired hands. Please feel free to request anything you like." the professional man was still talking as though he were part of the secret service. A less professional man had taken Joeys things and put them in the back of a large stretch limo.
"Eagle eye this is ground leaf, the package is on its way." he said into his shoulder - which obviously donned a small walkie-talkie.
"Affirmative ground leaf, this is Eagle eye over." a voice came back. Joey looked up to see a Kaiba Corp helicopter flying a hundred yards away in the direction of the Kaiba mansion.
"In the car please Sir." Gustavo was holding the door open as Ground leaf made the request. Joey got in the limo and felt like he was in heaven.
There was a TV with a DVD and VHS player, a personal CD player. There was a phone, and video games. The seats lined the limo in just a way where it could fit probably twenty people. Fifteen with plenty of room. There were two sunroofs, each operated separately. And to top it off, a mini-bar and mini-fridge complete with snacks and drinks.
"This will be your transportation Sir. To and from school, and wherever Mr. Kaiba might request you go." the professional man explained.
"What should I call you?" Joey asked.
"Call me Sir?" he seemed puzzled.
"Yeah. We got Gustavo -"
"He is the driver."
"Right. Gustavo the driver. What do you want me to call you? Ground leaf?"
"No thank you Sir. 'Hey you' is always a popular one." he seemed to be loosing his professional manner.
"What is your name?" Joey tried again.
"Seth Nicholas Trinady. Served in the Navy for three years. Honorable discharge." he explained in a very loud voice.
"Okay, so can I call you Seth? Or Mr. Trinady?" Joey just needed to know what to call the guy.
"Seth is fine." he lost all professionalism as he declared this.
"Seth. Good."
The door opened suddenly and Joey hadn't realized they had moved, let alone arrived. "Welcome to Kaibas. I'll bring your things to your room Sir."
"Call me Joey."
"Yes, Joey, your belongings will be waiting for you. Anything else I can do for you this evening Sir?"
"Nah, I'm all set. Thanks Gustavo."
"You are very welcome Sir Joey."
"This way please Joey." Seth declared, leading Joey up the gravel drive way.
There were fountains along the lawn, which was perfectly mowed, and flowers everywhere. Overall it looked like a very nice place to stay.
"Eagle eye, stand down, the package has arrived, the package has arrived."
"Roger that ground leaf. Eagle eye flying in, mission accomplished. Over."
The double doors opened of their own accord and Joey stepped in, mesmerized by the enormity of such an estate. Two sets of Grand stairs lead up to another grand door. Between the two sets of stairs were two walkways.
"The left there, leads to the kitchen and the dinning room Sir Joey. That is where you will also find the 'relax' room, or as some call it a 'living room'. Equipped with a fifty seven inch television, surround sound. A ten disc CD player, we do have an unofficial disk jockey, he stays in room twenty nine if you'd like. Video games are also located in that room. The right leads to the pool, workout room, ballroom, and duel monsters field."
"He has his own virtual field? Man, this guy is loaded." Joey said out loud.
"Yes Sir Joey. To the right here," he gestured to a smaller door, "We have Kaibas study room where you can find him watching people do his homework and plotting to beat Yugi Moto. To your left again is the staff kitchen and there is a door to the basement. The basement is off limits. It's strictly for researchers and Kaiba. Up the stairs and through the door you will find fifty two bedrooms, two access to the attic and fifty two bathrooms. There is also a bathroom, I forgot to mention, to your right, just before the stairs.
"Out side you will find a martial arts training course, the gardens and fountains in the front which you have seen, the helicopter landing pad is on the roof, there is a jet landing strip outside as well. A tool shed." he seemed to be thinking over if he missed anything important.
"Thanks. That's more than extensive."
"Very well Sir Joey. Your room will be number forty seven. It is upstairs to your right to your left to your right again up the next set of stairs and to your left." Joey stared at him blankly.
"Shall I show you Sir Joey."
"That would be great Seth. And, just Joey is fine."
"Very well Joey."
The pair walked up the stairs, all along the directions that Seth had given previously. Joey was trying to take in their direction and all of the features of the mansion he could. He looked at the paintings on the wall as they passed by. He looked at the vases on the random tables scattered throughout the halls. There were random chairs located at the corners of hallways as well.
All of the rooms were numbered, which was very helpful because it would take him a long time to memorize where everything was.
"We would have given you a closer room, but with staff, Mokuba and Kaiba it was nearly impossible. If you like however we can have one of the garden staff switch rooms with you Joey."
"Nah, it's no big deal. I half expected to have to sleep in the shed." Joey joked.
"Why would we do that Joey?"
"Never mind." Joey smiled.
"Here we are Sir Joey. Dinner will be served at six fifteen. We are serving a western based Clam Chowder to start with a tossed salad and homemade from scratch dinner croissants. For our main course we will be serving, Teriyaki chicken, lightly grilled peppers and onions, all over a delicious white rice. For desert there will be a choice of chocolate moose cake or banana splits. As always, you may have both. Is there anything else I can do for you Si-Joey."
"Actually I do have one favor. Could you possibly come get me at dinner. I think I'll get lost." Joey blushed slightly.
"Very good. I will arrive here promptly at six ten and we shall had down to dinner."
"Thanks Seth."
"Your key sir." Seth handed Joey a fancy looking card. He then bowed and began leaving.
Joey put the card in the card slot and the door opened. He walked in to heaven - again. There was a fancy couch, with ten or so throw pillows, an overstuffed chair with a footrest. To the right he noticed an open door and saw that it lead to his own personal bathroom. To the left he saw an adjacent bedroom. There was a miniature refrigerator on the wall in the main room. A television and a game console. He also noticed there was a phone on the side table.
A knock was heard. Joey opened the doors - which closed on their own.
"I forgot to mention two things Joey. Forgive me."
"Yeah it's no biggie. What's up?"
"You have your own personal line and you have digital cable with nearly three hundred channels. Feel free to order any paper view movie you like."
"Thanks Seth."
"You're welcome Joey. I shall return at ten passed six."
"Okay. Thanks." Again Seth nodded and backed away.
Joey went to his couch and flopped down. He laughed as he thought of the luck he was in. "Something's got to be up Kaiba's sleeve if he's letting me stay in paradise." Joey groaned and decided to call Tristan before Tristan called him - to find him absent.
"~Hello~" a sweet voice said on the other line.
"Hello, is Tristan available?"
"~Oh, yes hold on one moment Joey.~" Tristans parents knew his voice on the phone. That's sweet.
"~Joey?~" Tristan asked.
"Hey Tristan." Joey smirked. "I just didn't want you to call my house cause I'm not there so I wanted to make sure you didn't worry."
"~That was thoughtful of you Joey. Where are you?~"
"Guess."
"~The hospital?~"
"Nope. Come on."
"~I don't know Joey.~" Tristan shrugged though Joey couldn't see it. "~Kaibas.~" He said sarcastically.
"Hahahahahaha. Yep."
"~What?~"

Yep."
"~What?~"
