Well, nobody seems to be reading my fic… but oh well! I think it's one of my better fics if you ask me… since it's my first fic I've written about Seto Kaiba. Anyway… read and enjoy!

===============================

I looked at myself in the mirror - what was I so anxious about? And why did I feel so strongly toward the Kaiba brothers? It was like I was out to protect them or something. The first day I stepped on this island I had no emotion toward either of them; but after I dueled Kaiba it all seemed to have changed. I should be home already! Home with my three million dollars… home with my brother and home with my grandfather. They will be missing me a lot by now. I had to admit that I missed them both too. I can't leave - I have to make sure Kaiba and Mokuba's souls are set free. They are all depending on Yugi and his alter-ego. All three of their lives hang in the balance of this duel today.

Yugi and Pegasus had already begun their duel when I joined the others at the sidelines on top of the balcony. I got the best view from up there. They were at the stage where Pegasus was about to destroy Yugi's monster - the Beaver Warrior, with one of my personal favourites - the Red Archery Girl. That card had never let me down. I guess Pegasus thought so too.

"It's no use, Yugi-boy… I know all the cards that are already in your hand." Pegasus stated smugly. "You have the Summoned Skull, Celtic Guardian, Spellbinding Circle, Magical Hats and Horned Imp."

The audience gasped. I did too, actually. How could Pegasus possibly know that? With his eye of course. It sure was freaky… but believable, now. There was so much strange magic going on around this island that it wasn't funny.

The duel wasn't looking good for Yugi. I was actually thankful that it was him up there dueling Pegasus rather than me. I don't think a duelist, even of my superior skill could stand up to him. Kaiba's display proved it. Yugi kept going strong and played the Summoned Skull and Spellbinding Circle - just as Pegasus had predicted.

The game played on and Yugi was looking more and more anxious, as Pegasus kept ranting on about how his Millennium Eye could see every move that Yugi made. Yugi suddenly smiled, and announced a way that Pegasus would be unable to read his mind. He began to shuffle between himself and his inner spirit - he sure was brainy. If I had a spirit like that I probably wouldn't have thought of it. Pegasus looked desperate now - he couldn't read his mind, so how was he able to predict Yugi's moves?

Pegasus declared that they would now be dueling in a "shadow game"… which I had heard of somewhere before. A dark purple mist covered the dueling arena - it was so thick that you couldn't see Pegasus nor Yugi either. The brunette girl started to panic now that she couldn't see her little boyfriend.

"Yugi!" She cried out.

"He's going to be alright, Anzu." Jounouchi said. So that's her name. I thought.

"I can't feel his presence anymore, Jou!" she shrieked. Duh! Don't you have to be magical or something to feel someone else's presence?!

She ran downstairs to get a better look, followed by Jounouchi, the brunet boy and Bakura. I followed slyly behind them, thinking about whether Yugi made his intentions clear to Pegasus if he won the duel.

After a while, things began to pick up. Anzu and the rest of the dork brigade reckoned that they could sense Yugi's presence again. I just rolled my eyes. Dueling was about skill and strategy, not about having cheerleaders to help you through everything. From within the thick haze, I heard Motou shout:

"Magician of Black Chaos… OBLITERATE!!!"

Followed by… "No!!!!!!! How can this be?! I lost! Cecelia… I am forever sorry!"

Who the hell is Cecelia? All I could do was sigh with relief - Yugi had won the game, which means that Pegasus had to follow his word and release the souls of the Kaiba brothers and of Yugi's grandfather. The purple mist evaporated and revealed a sobbing Pegasus on his knees and a victorious Motou.

"Now Pegasus! Release the souls of my grandpa, Seto Kaiba and Mokuba Kaiba like you said you would!"

"Fine Yugi……… it's done." He said, still on his knees.

"Prove it to me, Pegasus!"

Pegasus stood up and held up the now-empty Soul Cards. They didn't have Mokuba's, Kaiba's or Yugi's grandfather's faces on them. I instantly shot off to the direction of the dungeon. Jounouchi tried to run after me.

"Leave her, Jou! She's after Kaiba!" Anzu yelled after him.

I ran into the dungeon and dashed down the corridor to Kaiba's cell. He was just now coming back to life. He looked sleepy and drowsy and was trying to stand. I threw open the cell door and slung his arm over my shoulder to keep him on his feet.

"Kaiba… how are you feeling? Are you alright?"

He mumbled something and groaned. He sure was heavy to keep upright. "Toya…?"

"It's me Set- Kaiba…"

He groaned again and rubbed his eyes. I guessed his vision was a little blurry. "What am I doing down here…?"

"Pegasus took your soul, Kaiba. Remember you're here to save Mokuba! I know where he is! We can go and get him now! Yugi won the duel against Pegasus!"

He smiled meekly across at me at me. "Let's go and get Mokuba then."

I nodded and we walked out of the dark, damp dungeons and into daylight again. I led Kaiba through the castle to the North Tower and picked the lock with my dagger on the cell door to Mokuba's room. Kaiba burst in to see his little brother sitting on the ground, hugging his knees to his chest.

"Big brother! You're here! You're here!"

"Mokuba!" Kaiba bent down on one knee as his little brother leapt into his arms. Mokuba sniffled into his brother's chest as they rejoiced.

"I was so scared you would never come back, big bro…" He whimpered.

Tears welled in Kaiba's eyes as he pressed his cheek against Mokuba's raven mane. A tear slid down his cheek and he held Mokuba tighter. "It's alright Mokuba… I'm here now…"

I couldn't help but watch this immense display of affection. They were the only thing that they had left in the world - each other. I guessed that's kind of how I felt. I treasured my younger brother, Makato, like diamonds. He and my grandfather meant the world to me. My parents meant nothing. They were never home, they never sent money or postcards… they didn't give a damn about me and Makato. Dueling and dancing was my life. I had a small job as a barmaid in the evening to support Makato's education and my grandfather's pill prescriptions. I was paid 975 yen per hour, working about thirty hours a week. My grandfather was on his pension funds too. It was enough for us to survive - just. Sometimes I would bring home a treat for us to enjoy after dinner if I was working a day shift, on the way home from work. Makato would always like that.

Kaiba stood up as Mokuba clutched onto his leg like he was going to fall through the floor at any moment. Kaiba's tears had dried already. He looked down at Mokuba and petted him on the head and then looked back to me.

"Thank you Toya. You saved my life, and my brother's life. I don't know what I would have done without you." He said; his voice still slightly shaky.

"Don't thank me, Kaiba. Thank Yugi and Yami. They were the ones that bet Pegasus in the duel to release your souls back to your bodies."

"I know… but I wouldn't have known where I was or what I was doing if you weren't there when I woke up just before. You took me to Mokuba… that's more than enough."

"It's okay Kaiba." He gave me a little smile.

"Where are you going from here?" he asked.

"Back to Domino I suppose."

"How do you intend on getting there?"

I halted. How was I intending on getting home?! "Um… err… I guess I'll have to start swimming." I laughed slightly.

"Don't be absurd. I'll call my helicopter to take us back to Domino." Kaiba offered.

"Oh- I mean, thanks Kaiba."

Kaiba's eyes wandered down to Mokuba, who was still clutched onto his leg with his eyes closed. He looked back up and my wrists caught his attention. He grabbed one of them and held it up in the air in front of him. I snatched it back; memories flooding back to me when that jerk grabbed my wrists to stop me from struggling.

"What are these?" Kaiba asked, referring to the bruises which covered my wrists and part of my collarbone. He ran his fingers along my left collarbone. I flinched as he hit the bruised part.

"Just a few bruises. Nothing to fuss about." I replied sternly. I didn't want to let him know what caused them.

"Where did they come from?"

I shook my head and turned to leave. "It doesn't matter."

Kaiba's POV…

I decided to let it go. If she didn't want to tell me, then she didn't have to. I picked up Mokuba and made a call from my cell phone for one of the KaibaCorp helicopters to come to the island. Leiko sat down on the grass under a tree and leant against its trunk. She took out her hair and combed it with her fingers, wincing as she caught some knots.

I wrapped Mokuba in my coat and sat him on my knee. Leiko tied her hair back up and began to roll up a cigarette. I frowned.

"Do you mind not smoking around Mokuba? I never smoke in front of him at home. He doesn't like it."

"Oh --- sorry." She slipped the tobacco back into her pouch.

"It's okay."

Soon the helicopter arrived. I got in first and put Mokuba down and then pulled Leiko in after me. She sat staring out the window all the way back to Domino, tapping her fingers against her thigh and fiddling with the ends of her hair. I could tell she was desperately hanging out for a smoke.

The helicopter landed us on the helicopter pad at my mansion at around eight thirty. It was dark and chilly and a black sky surrounded us. I turned to Leiko who was rubbing her frozen arms.

"Come downstairs and get warm. You look like death warmed up." I said, carrying Mokuba on the side of my hip. She followed me down to the living room and idled about for a moment wondering what to do.

"Don't just stand there, help yourself while I go and put Mokuba to bed. I'll be back in a minute."

Leiko's POV…

Kaiba disappeared upstairs with his brother in his arms. I wandered through to the living room and my eye fell upon some photos on the ledge above the fireplace. It was a picture of Kaiba and Mokuba standing together outside some sort of building. In the background it said `Merivale Orphanage'. Mokuba was smiling but Seto just stood with a blank stare; his arm around his brother's shoulders. The next photo was of a woman smiling brightly, holding a tiny baby with brown hair. I picked up the photo and looked on the back, it said: `Maia holding Seto - six hours. 25/10/1986.'

"What are you doing?" A stern voice from behind me startled me. I turned around quickly to face the blue eyes of Seto Kaiba.

"I was admiring these photographs of yours." I turned back around to face them. He came and stood beside me.

"The woman you see there is my mother, Maia. That child is me not long after I was born." Kaiba said emotionlessly.

"Is it alright if I ask why you are standing outside an orphanage?" I asked boldly.

"Maia died while giving birth to Mokuba. We were put into the Merivale Orphanage soon after. My father died in a car crash so we had to be put in an orphanage. Lots of people wanted to adopt me because of my intelligence… but I refused to go without Mokuba."

I put a hand to my mouth. How terrible! "I'm sorry for your loss Kaiba… it must have been hard."

"It was. But I guess you can relate, not seeing your parents either and all." He crossed his arms over his muscled chest.

"Yes. Well, I must be going. My grandfather and younger brother will be waiting for me." I said.

"I can escort you home." Kaiba offered.

"There is no need. I can walk. My house is only just over the river from here."

"If you insist." Kaiba showed me to the door. It started to drizzle slightly outside, but I didn't mind the rain.

"Well, I guess I will see you around then." Kaiba said.

"Yeah… I guess. Um, good luck, Kaiba."

He creased his brow. "What for?"

I shrugged. "Your future in dueling… designing all your new inventions and what have you."

He nodded. "You too, Leiko."

He called me by my first name… my heart randomly began to beat faster. "Well, goodbye then Kaiba." I turned and walked onto the white-gravel driveway. The rain fell onto my face and ran down my shoulders and chest. It wasn't cold so I didn't bother for a sweatshirt.

"Leiko," I gulped and turned around. Kaiba was still standing in the doorway.

"Yeah?"

"Call me Seto."

"Bu- " He closed the door.

What did that mean? It's not like I'm ever going to see the bastard again! "Call me Seto", what the fuck? He sure is one strange character…

I started my trek down the driveway and onto the street back to my own house. It was only a short walk - if ten minutes or so. I crossed the small stone bridge that went over the Domino River and down the street a little further. My Grandfather's house was located opposite the Domino River. He was a real garden enthusiast - the garden was never left to be neglected. I would quite often stub my toes or trip up over Makato's toys that were left lying on the lawn or in the flowers.

Inside, the lights were on and I could hear the TV going. Through the window I could see my grandfather watching television and drinking a cup of tea. Makato was probably in bed upstairs. I walked up the garden path and up the steps onto the porch to the front door. Hanging above the porch was a giant purple mass of wisteria in full bloom. It was lovely. I walked inside and saw Makato playing with his fire engine toy on the carpet at my grandfather's feet. He looked up at me with his huge storm-grey chibi eyes and leapt up from the carpet.

"Leiko! Sister you're back! You're finally home again! How I missed you!"

"I missed you too, baby boy." I knelt down on the floor and cuddled him in my arms. He wrapped his little arms around my neck and kissed me all over my face. He was almost ten, but we shared a love for each other like no other. Similar to that of `Seto' and Mokuba.

"Leiko… my girl. You're back. How was your journey in Duelist Kingdom?" My grandfather Ken, rose from his chair and grasped for his walking cane.

I stood up and hugged him. "Well, to put a long story short, I'm three million dollars richer, Grandfather."

He smiled and laughed. "Well done Leiko… you've done very well." He patted my back and returned to his seat.

"I'll take the cheque in tomorrow before dance practice and get it banked, Grandfather." Makato reached up to me, wanting to be picked up. He was getting a big boy now, about Mokuba's size, but I could withstand his weight.

After my shower, I read Makato a bedtime story and went off to my own room shortly after he had fallen to sleep. It felt so good to be in my own bed again. I was still trying to figure out why Kaiba wanted me to call him Seto from now on. What was he playing at? I guessed this wouldn't be the last time I see him.

Meanwhile at the Kaiba Mansion…

Seto sat at his desk in front of his computer. He hacked into Domino's city population network. In this place you could find out information on anyone that lived in Domino. Kaiba typed in `Toya' and a list of Toyas came up.

"Ah… Toya, Leiko. That's what I'm looking for."

A small picture of Leiko with her blue-green hair and indigo blue eyes came up on the screen. Kaiba smiled to himself and looked at her information.

Kaiba smiled and continued to stare endlessly at Leiko's photo. It was her Duelist Kingdom Identity photo, but she looked just as beautiful as ever. Kaiba was still trying to figure out his feel toward her. She was ruthless and arrogant - like him, but she knew what she wanted in life. He also knew she had a sensitive side too - her younger brother Makato was her life, just as Mokuba was to him. He knew he liked her - she wasn't just another crazy airhead girl who groveled at his feet each time he walked past; she was more than that.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The following day was Tuesday, and for a change it wasn't raining. It was a clear day, not a cloud in the sky to threaten rain. I banked my cheque on the way to dance practice and the bank even gave me a combination-lock briefcase to stack all the cash in. That way nobody would be able to break into it during the day.

I came to my dance studio and went to my locker to put my stuff away. It was about ten o'clock when I arrived. My best girlfriend Yukiko was putting on her leg warmers in the locker/changing rooms when I came in.

"Hey girl! Congratulations! I heard you won second place in Duelist Kingdom! I can't believe it! What are you going to do with the money, Leiko?" She asked, her black hair sailing behind her as she came and hugged me.

"Yeah, I'm really pleased I won that prize money. I'll be able to have a lot of things I never used to be able to have now."

Yukiko jumped up and down with excitement. I guessed she hadn't taken her Ritalin this morning. Yukiko was diagnosed with ADD when she was four. She comes to dance training to burn off her energy and also because she loves doing it.

"Ooh you are soooo lucky Leiko! You got to hang out with Seto Kaiba! He's soooo dreamy…" She sighed. I snorted. Dreamy? Pfft… sure.

I opened my locker to put my briefcase full of money away when something red caught my eye. Inside my locker was a small clear-plastic box with a red ribbon tied around it. Inside the box were two layers of dark chocolates. There was a note on the attached to the side. It said:
Consider it a thank you gift. Seto Kaiba.
