"What the…"
"Ooh!!! You got chocolates from Seto Kaiba! You are soooo lucky girl! I would just kill to take your place right now!" Yukiko cried. She might as well fall over and faint right now. She was a huge fan of the CEO that had… sent me chocolates…
I read over the note again. "Consider it a thank you gift. Seto Kaiba." I opened the box of chocolates and frowned when I saw what shape the chocolates were - hearts. Okay now this is just too weird…
It was three o'clock by the time I had finished dance practice. I had two hours to relax until it was time for work. I walked to the subway station with Yukiko and we caught our separate trains home. When I walked in the front door, I noticed Makato's long blue and white hair was falling into his bowl of spaghetti as he sat up at the table eating his afternoon tea. He was reading the latest `Shounen Jump' magazine. I went up behind him and hugged him.
"Hey baby bro…" I held his hair back for him while he ate.
"Hey sis." He said, with food in his mouth.
"Here, let me tie back your hair." I took a hair tie out of my own hair and tied his blue and white tresses behind his head with it. He looked up at me with his grey eyes.
"Hey sis… some kid came around here looking for you today. He's really cool, I made friends with him." Makato said to me as he turned around in his seat.
"Oh yeah? Who was it?"
"His name was Mokuba… he really wanted to talk to you for some reason, but he never said why."
"Mokuba came here? Well that's…strange…" I went to the phone, and dialed the number to Kaiba Corp. Perhaps I could find Mokuba there. Would Seto be behind this? The phone rang about twice before the receptionist picked up.
[Hello, Kaiba Corporation, Sakura speaking. How may I help you?]
"Hello, I'm looking for Mokuba or Seto Kaiba… are they about?"
[I'm afraid Mokuba Kaiba is not available at the moment… but Mr. Kaiba is in his office. Please hold the line.]
I held for a moment or two until the line went through to Seto's office. He picked up the phone in a rather flustered and irritated tone of voice.
[Kaiba speaking. What do you want?]
"Um… hi Kai- uh, Seto… it's me, Leiko."
There was silence for a minute. [Leiko… hi…]
"Listen, firstly, thank you for the chocolates today. It was a nice surprise."
[It's my pleasure.]
"Secondly… my brother said that Mokuba came around to my house today looking for me. Do you have any knowledge of that?"
[Oh yes… I couldn't get a hold of your home phone number, so I sent Mokuba around after school to give you a message. Did he tell you what it was?]
"No, that's why I called."
[Oh, well I am holding an elite duelists gathering at my mansion on Friday night. It will be formal, so you might want to dress up a bit. You are invited to come.]
"Excellent… what time?"
[It starts at seven. Come and see me if your boss doesn't give you the night off. I'll make sure he does.]
"Thank you Seto… I look forward to it."
[I look forward to seeing you there. But if you'll excuse me… I must get back to my paperwork. It's driving me nuts and I have to get it finished by tonight.]
"Alright. I'll let you get back to it then. See you Friday."
[I'll have one of my limos come to pick you up at seven. Be ready.]
"Oh… alright then. Thanks. Goodbye Kaiba."
[It's Seto.] He hung up.
This had better be just a gathering for duelists… he wouldn't be the type of person to set me up… would he? Seto Kaiba, set me up? Nah… I cleared my mind and went up to the balcony of my room and had a cigarette. My main reason for smoking was because it relieved me of all the tension and stress in my life. I knew it wasn't good for my dancing career… but it was a difficult habit to break. My grandfather knew about it, but he didn't mind, just as long as Makato was never influenced by it. My parents were the ones that never knew… not that they would care whether I smoked or not anyway.
I changed into a pair of black pants and a white polo shirt and put my black waist-apron on overtop for work. I didn't mind my work uniform so much… Yukiko had told me that at her old work they made you wear platform stiletto shoes and mini skirts for waitressing. Yukiko also worked with me at the bar - she was probably my best friend, even if she was a bit of an airhead. She was a nice girl though; we got on well together and generally had the same views about things in life. Although she was a little more optimistic than I.
"Grandfather, I put my prize money into your safe in the basement… okay?" I said as I came downstairs.
"Alright sweetheart. What time do you get off work tonight?"
"I've got a five hour shift tonight, so probably about ten. I'll be home by eleven at the latest. Depends whether I go to the coffee house with Yukiko or not afterwards."
"Alright then, look after yourself, my dear."
"Will do. Bye Makato!" I gave him a big kiss on the lips each time I left for work and tickled his belly sometimes.
"Bye sis! I love you!"
"Love you too, Makato. Bye guys."
The bar wasn't as far to travel to as the studio in town, thankfully. I got off a couple of stops before I usually did when I went to dance training, and walked upstairs into the dusky twilight evening on the street. The bar I worked at was called `Limelight', and it really went off on weekends. Friday and Saturday nights were the best, but the most exhausting. I also got a lot of drunks to deal with, but the bouncers took care of them most of the time.
I walked in and waved a casual hello to my boss who was behind the bar reading a newspaper, and went to put my things away in the locker-room. I found Yukiko in there trying desperately to tie up her apron behind her waist, she was turning around in pointless circles trying to get it done, biting down on her lip.
"Need a hand?" I asked.
Yukiko looked up and her face lit up like a candle. "Leiko! Oh my God! Is it true?!" Her apron fell off as she came thundering over toward me.
I frowned down at her, as I was a few inches taller than her. "Is what true?"
She pulled me down onto the bench in the middle of the room. "You know Debbie, in dance class?"
I rolled my eyes, "Oh, that bitch."
"Yeah well, she reckons that someone told her that you and Seto Kaiba… you know… in Duelist Kingdom! Oh my God is it true?! You've just gotta tell me!"
I grunted. "Where would she get an idea like that?"
"Is it true?" Yukiko asked. She looked like she was going to explode with curiosity any minute.
"No, it's not true. Jesus… there are some nasty people out there." I heaved a sigh. Why was I such hot gossip? All I did was duel Kaiba and save him and his brother… I guessed that sounds kind of ironic.
"Oh… I'm sorry Leiko… Debbie's a wench anyway." Yukiko rubbed my arm and smiled. I smiled with her. Yukiko's innocence always put me in a good mood.
Together we went downstairs and got to work behind the bar. There were already people queuing up wanting drinks - most of them being men wanting a beer after work. Yukiko and I had our breaks after the first couple of hours. Yukiko watched me curiously as I lit up my cigarette and took a puff. She never smoked, and I'm glad of it.
"You wanna go to the coffee house after work?" I asked.
"No, I can't. My sister is coming home from Tokyo for a while. She arrives tonight at about nine." She replied.
"You'll be glad to see her."
"Yeah. What you doing for the weekend?"
"I've got some `do on Friday night. Nothing particularly special." I lied.
"Ooh where are you going?"
"It's just a gathering for first rate duelists… that's all."
Yukiko's eyes went even brighter red than they already were. "That means Seto Kaiba is going to be there!" She jumped up from her seat. "We're going to have to go shopping after dance class on Thursday, Leiko!"
"What for?"
"A dress of course! You can't expect to go to a party without a nice outfit!"
Come to think of it, she was right. I hadn't any formal clothing to wear to this gathering, so my only option was to raid my prize money and go out and get something. I sighed. Who knows what this so called `elite duelists gathering' would bring?
Thursday…
==========
"That looks awesome on you! Now all we need are some shoes…" Yukiko said as I came out of the changing rooms in a smooth blue dress. I hated it. My hair was blue, my eyes were blue, the last thing I needed was to be wearing something blue.
A shop assistant soon came to do what she did best - assist us. "Might I suggest you try on something to brighten you up…? Black, no. Blue, no. Red, yes. Red would look immaculate on you."
Yukiko rubbed her chin in thought and then looked at me, as if she was trying to fathom me in a red dress. She was, without a doubt, a fashion expert. "Alright then, let's see a red dress on you." She finally decided.
The assistant went out and came back with a fiery red dress. It was styled as a strapless dress, the bodice acting as a corset. At the back it criss-crossed, revealing some of my back. The skirt part of the dress was of red satin, laced with beads and sequins. It was overly sexy to say the least… but I think it was a bit flamboyant for me. I tried it on anyway.
"No, Leiko, that's the pick. I am not letting you exit this store without that dress in a bag that you will be taking home with you!" Yukiko ordered.
I took another look at myself in the mirror. I felt overdressed… but it was so magnificent… the corset pushed my breasts up, creating an impressive cleavage. I felt dressed up for once in my life. I felt like… a girl.
"What is the asking price?" I asked.
"Four hundred… but we'll add in a red choker and wrist cuff for free." The shop assistant replied.
"I can't afford that!" I cried.
"Yes you can! You just won three million Yen you dolt!" Yukiko reminded me.
"Oh… that's right. Well. In that case, I'll take it." I heard Yukiko squeal with delight as I went back into my changing rooms. I came out with the red dress and the shop assistant took it for me.
"Now all we need is some red shoes to match. Ooh Leiko! You're going to look stunning! I can't wait to see!" Yukiko seemed more excited about this than I did. But it was fun to say the least.
We ended up buying a pair of platform heels which I had no idea whatsoever how to walk in them, and they made me ridiculously tall. But one thing that was good about them is that they matched my dress perfectly, although I could already tell that by the end of tomorrow night my feet would be killing me.
Friday…
==========
Yukiko pleaded my boss to let me have the night off, and once he agreed, she dragged me down the street to the hairdressers. The hairdresser threw all these different hairstyles at me and in the end I just told her to do whatever she wanted. It actually turned out really nice. She straightened it with irons in places, curled it with curling tongs in places and braided it in other places and in the end she put it all up, with a few curls and bits hanging down. Since I have a lot of hair, having it up in this style made me look as if I were wearing a wig.
"Alright, now all we have left to do is your makeup and we'll be finished! You're going to look beautiful, Leiko!" Yukiko cried.
I didn't resist when Yukiko pushed me down into a chair behind my dresser in my room. There was a big mirror attached to it so I could see what Yukiko would be applying to my face. She pulled out her makeup case which she had brought with her and started putting foundation, mascara, eyeliner, blush and finally lipstick on my face. I had never dressed up so much in my life.
"If this doesn't impress him, then I can't see what else will!" Yukiko squealed.
"I'm not trying to impress him Yukiko."
"Oh sure you aren't. Hey, look your limo is outside already!" She peered over the windowsill as she stood behind me.
"But it's only ten to seven…"
"I told you he's keen to see you!" Yukiko cried as she cleared the doorway to let me downstairs.
My grandfather and Makato kissed me on my cheek before I left to get into the limo to the Kaiba Mansion. Yukiko wished me good luck before I left. I questioned myself as to why I felt I actually might need it.
