…The Storyteller…
“What do you mean murdered?” Yami asked with wide eyes. All the fear and regret that he had felt for himself disappeared. All he could think about was Yugi and the thought of someone hurting his little angel.
Malik rolled his eyes in frustration. “Exactly what it sounds like. He was murdered.” Malik turned his gaze to the ground. “It’s a long story but then again I guess they all are.”
“Please tell me,” Yami asked, his eyes full of despair as the guilt in his heart took a break from gnawing at it to listen to the story as well.
Malik hesitated for a moment. This was Yugi’s story. Not his. Intense lilac eyes stared into dark crimson. In the future, Malik would look back and say that there was something in those eyes that eventually compelled him to talk. Concern? Love? Well, whatever it was, the memories of Yugi’s past rolled off his tongue like a song and Marik and Yami listened intently.
“Well, first you have to know that the beginning. The reason Jou, Ryou and I are spirits today are because we stumbled on to these secret items –Millennium items they were called– which all were cursed. That’s how we became what we are today; spirits. However, Yugi, well…he was special,” Malik explained slowly and looked up to make sure everyone was still listening. Too his surprise, both Marik and Yami were leaning forward with their ears perked. Any further and they both would have fallen of their chairs face first. That thought amused Malik momentarily but he quickly resumed his story. Or Yugi’s story.
“You see, Yugi’s parents died when he was very young and he was raised in a foster home with not-so-loving foster parents. This was before the rest of us had even heard of these tainted items. Anyways, Yugi’s foster father abused him terribly and the mother just treated him as bad emotionally. One day Yugi and his parents got into a huge fight, and they told him that they wished that he would just leave. That was when he had enough…and he ran away,” Malik said bitterly. It still bothered him and Jou that they didn’t realize what was going on before it was too late.
“Then what?” Marik asked curiously. Until that moment, Malik had not realized that he had stopped so after clearing his throat, he continued: “So, that night that he ran away, Yugi was cornered by a gang of thieves. But they wanted to take more than his money…they wanted to take him–“
“No,” Yami whispered to himself. Up until that point, Yami had remained silent but suddenly he felt raw emotions bubbling in his heart again. Malik only nodded at Yami’s quiet remark.
“Yeah but Yugi refused. His innocence was the only thing that he had to his name. He didn’t own anything. He never did. He never had anything to call his own. A family…a home…nothing. So he ended up trading his life for the one thing that he held dear to his heart…himself,” Malik said sadly.
Yami was visibly shaking but he wasn’t crying and Malik actually scooted closer to Marik in order to avoid any flying objects that might come his way. “But then how did he become a ‘spirit’?” Marik asked while dramatically emphasizing the word spirit with air quotes. Malik suppressed the urge to smack him upside the head but it wouldn’t have done much good anyways since his hand would just go through the thick skull.
“Well, after the men had…” Malik tried to find a good word but to no avail, “beaten Yugi to death.” Malik winced at how horrible that sounded. Damn, he should have tried harder to rephrase it by the look on Yami’s face but there was no use dwelling on it now. “The gods took pity upon the loss of such an innocent soul, so an angel was sent to Yugi to bring him back to life, but only for a second. Only long enough for the angel to present Yugi with the Millennium puzzle, one of the seven cursed items.”
“And so the curse was put into effect and Yugi was given the chance to live again…except this time no one could see him besides Jou, Ryou, and myself.” Malik inhaled deeply taking a break from the story to throw the popcorn bowl in Marik’s lap and point demandingly to the kitchen. Marik grumbled angrily but nevertheless stood up and walked through the kitchen door. Moments later, the taller Egyptian returned with a new bowl of popcorn and handed it to Malik roughly.
“So nearing the end of our story,” Malik said popping the fresh popcorn into his hungry mouth, “Once Yugi’s spirit found us and told us what happened, we all vowed that we would find a way so that we could stay with him. Eventually, thanks to Yugi, we found the other items and–“
“Wait!” Marik interjected. “The rest of you touched the items on purpose!? Even though you knew what it was going to do to you?”
Malik shrugged indifferently. “None of us had very happy lives and the thought of the four of us remaining friends sounded great at the time. It still is,” Malik said softly but then added in a slightly sadder tone: “But we’ve learned that it’s actually not so great living forever. It’s like the whole world is moving and your just standing still. Like you’re talking but nobody’s listening. Like you’re hurting but nobody cares. Like you’re dancing but nobody’s watching. I mean, sure we have each other, but we don’t know what its like to feel someone’s warmth at night, to hold someone’s hand on a chilly winter afternoon, to kiss someone that you love...and at this point, it looks like we never will.”
Marik was shocked at Malik’s sudden behavior. Ever since he’d known the other boy, he had been crazy with a twisted sense of humor at other’s expense, especially his, but now…Malik seemed almost human. “Can anything break the curse?” Marik asked slowly.
Malik sighed. “Love,” was all he said. A small wind blew through the two heads of blonde hair and Malik exhaled again as he looked at the loveseat that was now empty and the front door that was slightly ajar. Chuckling sadly to himself, Malik whispered hopefully: “Go get him Yami.”
…
“You giggle too much,” Bakura said from his spot sprawled out over his large brown couch while flipping through the channels like madman.
“All of us do,” Ryou replied as he continued to wash the countless of dirty dishes that piled up in Bakura's sink and counter. It was nice of Bakura to let Ryou stay even though the smaller of the two knew that the other one had his intentions for doing so.
“All of who?” Bakura questioned as he rolled his eyes after spotting Ryou still cleaning his dishes through the doorway that joined the kitchen and the living room. Since they got to Bakura's place, Ryou had insisted on cleaning everything that he could get his pretty little hands on. It was nice though to get some help around the house.
“Nothing,” Ryou smiled as he took off the yellow, cleaning gloves he was wearing; his mission being completed.
“You’re a strange one,” Bakura said as he turned to his side to get a better view of the TV. He glanced up when he noticed Ryou hovering above him but before he could ask the other what he wanted, Ryou said with a smile: "Thank you."
Bakura raised an eyebrow and said: "For what?"
"Letting me stay," Ryou said and Bakura just nodded and turned back to the TV. He noticed out of the corner of his eye that Ryou was still watching him with curious eyes. 'Ra, is he always this annoying?' Bakura said to himself. As if reading the other's thoughts, Ryou said abruptly: "Can I go to my room now?"
Bakura shrugged indifferently. He was too tired to try to court Ryou into his bed tonight. And besides, something told Bakura that it wouldn't take that long to make Ryou his. "Tired already?" Bakura said when he realized Ryou was still in front of him.
"I just want to get settled down if I'm going to be here," Ryou explained kindly. Bakura nodded absent-mindedly and watched as Ryou walked over to the stairs and prepared to mount them.
"Thanks again," Ryou said turning his head and flashing Bakura his award-winning smile before scurrying up the stairs.
Bakura smiled after Ryou's retreating form and when he realized what he was doing, he grabbed a nearby pillow and smothered it into his face.
"Oh damn it all to hell! Why am I smiling!" Bakura groaned into the pillow.
He didn’t notice Ryou’s lingering form at the top of the staircase. The smile still plastered on his face, Ryou said quietly to himself: “See Bakura. I knew you were different.” Seconds after, Ryou turned and began to make his way towards his new bedroom.
….
“AHHHH!!”
Jou jumped up from his bed and crossed the hall, slamming the bedroom door where Yugi was currently sleeping open with a loud bang.
“Yugi,” Jou called out to his shorter friend and was shocked to find the boy tossing and turning in his bed. The sheets were stained with cold sweat and Yugi’s eyes were straining at how tight he was struggling to keep them shut. “Yug’ wake up!” Jou beckoned as he slightly shook the boy by his shoulders.
“Don’t let him get me! No, stay away!” Yugi cried in his sleep, tears falling on the pillow beneath his head.
“You’re having a bad dream! Wake up!” Jou shouted and after what seemed like eternity, Yugi woke with a violent jerk. The scared amethyst eyes searched frantically around the room before landing on Jou’s crouched form by the side of the bed. Jou sighed in relief.
“Its okay Yugi,” Jou said taking Yugi’s shaking form in a strong embrace. After a few minutes, Jou released his friend and looked into his eyes only to see concern and love in them, which quiet frankly confused the blonde.
“Did you dream about them again?” Jou asked softly. To his surprise Yugi shook his head.
“No, I didn’t,” Yugi said standing up from the bed and walking over to where he spotted his jacket.
Jou raised an eyebrow at Yugi’s response. “Then what were you dreaming about?” the blonde asked curiously.
Yugi looked at the floor before glancing back up at his concerned friend. “Yami.”
Jou shook his head. He was so lost. “What about Yami?”
For a second, Yugi ignored the question and instead said: “Jou, you know how when your bond grows really strong with someone who can see us then you involuntarily create a mind link with them? You can read their thoughts…”
Jou nodded slowly. “Yeah…so?”
Yugi quickly threw on his jacket and walked towards the door. “Yami didn’t mean what he said…he was just scared. Scared of his uncle. I saw it. I saw what happened to him as a child in my dream and…I understand. And, frankly I don’t care what he did. I love him and I always will.”
Jou smiled at Yugi flashing his pearly whites. “Well then go get him Yug’.”
Yugi smiled back and then turned to exit the room but thought better of it and instead ran back to Jou and hugged him tightly. “Thanks Jou. You’re a great friend.”
Jou grinned. “I know. It’s hard to be this awesome.”
Yugi laughed lightly and then, before Jou knew it, he was gone. Jou smiled to himself. Yugi was going to become human again. He was going to get another chance to live life as a normal teenager. Jou slowly laid back into the bed and then jumped when someone cleared their throat.
“What the hell is going on in here? Why did I hear you yelling? Do you not understand that it’s past nine? Mokuba has school you imbecile!” Kaiba yelled from the doorway.
Jou didn’t even retaliate. He was too happy for Yugi and all he was able to do was smile at Kaiba, which took the other slightly off guard. Jou then looked back up to the ceiling and asked softly: “Why are you so cold Kaiba?”
Kaiba remained silent and continued to glare at the blonde on the bed viciously. Jou stood to his feet and walked right up to the brunet and looked into those cold sapphire eyes.
The blonde then walked right past Kaiba completely ignoring the other’s eyes watching him intensely from behind as he opened the door to his room and walked in before shutting it quietly.
…
Yami ran. He ran as fast as he could. He just didn’t know where he was running to. But he felt it in his gut that wherever his legs were taking him, that he would find Yugi. He would find the boy who he had fallen madly in love with. Thirty minutes passed by and Yami found himself back at his house. Opening the front door, he could sense the difference in the atmosphere. It wasn’t thick and heavy like when he left. Instead it was peaceful and familiar.
Yami dropped his coat to the floor as he quickly ran up the stairs and then suddenly stopped outside of his favorite room. With his hand on the doorknob, Yami hesitated as several thoughts consumed his mind. What if his uncle was in there again? But…what if Yugi was in there? What was it going to be? Take a chance at love or live forever in fear.
Yami sighed as he slowly let his grasp release the golden knob…
…
Yugi looked at the sprawled glass shards that littered the white floor. Some were stained with blood. ‘What happened here?’ Yugi said fearfully to himself as he picked up a piece of glass taking extra precaution not to cut his finger by mistake. A small clicking sound reached Yugi’s ears and the small boy turned around to see a pair of crimson eyes watching him from the doorway.
“Yami…” Yugi whispered as he let the piece of glass between his fingers slide to the ground.
