…An Unlikely Friend…
The atmosphere in the restaurant was so thick that it made it hard to breathe. Luckily, no one else, besides their little group, could feel it. And most of the people just continued talking idly while enjoying their meal, completely oblivious to the hell that was on the verge of breaking loose. Jumping to his feet as fast as he could, Yami had just enough time to stand in between Ryou and Bakura, who was now standing up as well.
"Bakura I can explain!" Yami said hurriedly, standing directly in front of the white-haired youth. Then, after a moment or two of Yami thinking, he concluded sadly: "Actually, I can't."
Marik, who had intended to keep his mouth shut for the duration of this little scene, decided that he would have to take the reigns if they all wanted to make it out of here in one piece. Malik, who had somehow read the other’s mind, quickly tried to keep his mouth shut, but it was already too late.
"Bakura,” Marik began in a matter-a-fact tone. “Ryou's a ghost thingy because he touched an golden item of evil and now he needs someone to love him so that he can be a human and live happily ever after. Got it?"
Yugi stared with wide eyes at the tall Egyptian and then turned to the boy beside him and watched as Malik buried his face in his hands and shook his head shamefully with a distressed groan. Yami sweat dropped and then admitted sheepishly: "Maybe I should have explained it.”
Yugi took a deep breath before standing up from his chair. "If we could all just go back to the house and talk–"
"Like hell!" Bakura shouted, turning his glare from Yami to Yugi and then back to Ryou. "I can't believe this shit!"
Several heads turned and Yami immediately hushed Bakura. He really didn’t want to create a scene. Luckily, he didn’t have to do much as Bakura ripped up his coat from the back of his chair and stormed out of the building.
Ryou, who looked like he was on the verge of tears, called out after him. "Bakura, wait! Let me–"
But Bakura didn’t even turn back. He didn’t even respond. He just kept walking out of the building as if Ryou was…invisible. Yugi watched with sad eyes as Ryou exited the building out the back and then sunk back into his chair with a frown.
“Alright, get up!” Malik ordered his older counterpart with a fierce glare.
“What? Why?” Marik questioned but got up anyways.
“Because!” Malik shouted. “Your explanation was so damn pathetic that it probably made things ten times worse! So now, you are going to come with me to fix things!”
Marik arched a slim eyebrow. “Says who?”
Marik heard a loud wince come from Yugi and Jou, and he immediately regretted what he had said. Malik’s eyes turned into dark slits and, with a tone that dared Marik to answer him back again, Malik hissed angrily: “Says me.”
Marik didn’t know if he should hold his ground or back down but, not having the strength to get into another argument with the tan ghost that he was reluctantly beginning to fall for, he just nodded and let Malik guide him outside.
“Phew!” Jou said when the two had vanished out the door. “I thought for sure Malik was going to kill him.”
Yugi didn’t fail to notice the nervousness in Jou’s voice and, with a look to the blond’s right, he knew why. Piercing blue eyes watched him intensely and Yugi had always known Jou to be bad under pressure. Yugi flashed a sad smile to Yami who had taken a seat beside him and, seeing his distressed love, the taller took him in his arms.
Jou purposely looked off to the side, finding the corner of the restaurant particularly interesting. However, no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t shake the brunet’s steady gaze off the back of his head. He bit his lip to keep from saying anything but he was getting to his breaking point and he was sure that Kaiba was well aware of this. Yugi was about to speak when Jou cut him off.
"Okay! Alright! I'm a ghost! I'm sorry! Just stop with the eyes! It burns!” Jou said covering his head with his arms in a sad attempt to block out Kaiba’s glare. Yugi sighed at this but couldn’t say that he was surprised. It was just a matter of time before all of their secrets were revealed.
What did surprise Yugi was when Kaiba’s lips curved into a smirk. “I knew,” was all the brunet said.
Jou looked up in shock and his eyes widened in absolute confusion. "You knew! But…how did you…who could have–what?"
Kaiba seemed to enjoy Jou’s baffled reaction. "Mokuba told me," Kaiba said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"What?! How could he? He promised," Jou said slightly hurt by the betrayal from the smaller Kaiba.
"Well, I had to persuade him of course," Kaiba added smugly.
“Persuade him?” Jou inquired incredulously.
Kaiba nodded. “When it came down to being grounded for the rest of his childhood or telling me what the hell was wrong with you, he chose the latter.”
Jou gasped at the explanation. “You’re unbelievable!”
Yami nodded in agreement at this. “That’s Kaiba for you.”
Jou crossed his arms of his chest and leaned back into his seat. He was going to have a serious discussion with both Kaiba’s when he got home. Well, not his home but close enough.

Malik scanned the streets, looking, in particular, for a spiky mane of snow white hair. At first, he had wound up empty-handed. However, once taking a stroll over to the park across the street from the restaurant, he spotted a dark figure leaning up against a large tree. Eyes brimming with determination, Malik made his way over to the shadowy form. Once he was close enough, he saw angry brown eyes fall on him. For a moment, he faltered. But, after regaining his composure, he continued his walk until he was standing directly in front of the pissed off youth.
He reconsidered his first thought that Marik should go talk to Ryou and that he should come talk some sense into Bakura. Malik had not known the other boy very long but he knew that he would have a better chance than Marik would at convincing Bakura of his foolishness. Malik was known for being very persistent.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" were Malik’s first words.
Bakura immediately took on the defensive. “Why the fuck are you out here? What gives you the right to talk to me? Let me guess, you’re one of Ryou’s ‘ghost’ friends? Give me a bloody break.”
Malik placed both hands on his hips. “What gives me the right?! No, what gives you the right to treat Ryou like that! Like he’s invisible or unworthy of your attention! How dare you?”
Bakura casted a dangerous glare in Malik’s direction. “How dare I?” Bakura laughed but it was a laugh that was outlined with hurt. “I wasn’t the one who lied! He did! I trusted him! I…”
Malik was surprised when Bakura suddenly broke off. It was then that he had realized behind all the hate and anger clouding those dark brown eyes, there was pain. It took Malik until this very moment to realize how alike the brown-eyed youth. Like himself, Bakura wasn’t one to cry when he was hurt. Instead, he became furious.
That was a wake up call for Malik because during the time that he had spent with Marik, he had learned that sometimes…it was okay to cry. It was okay to be sad or to show emotion because, you know what, that’s what made you human. And, no matter what anybody said, Malik was still human.
“Bakura,” Malik said slowly. “I don’t know you very well but I do know this. Ryou loves you.”
Malik noticed instantly the flash of shock and disbelief that scurried past Bakura’s eyes. But it was gone as quickly as it came. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Bakura said, refusing for one second to believe what Malik had just confessed to him.
“Believe what you will,” Malik replied softly. “But I know Ryou. And if he didn’t love you…then he would have disappeared from your life by now.”
Malik and Bakura were both surrounded by silence as the information that the former had just revealed sank in. The wind blew past them, making blond and white hair dance around freely. Then lavender collided with brown and, in that moment, Bakura knew what he had to do.
….
“Ryou, right?” Marik inquired and the petite boy sitting on the bench only nodded. He was currently staring at his folded hands on his lap. Marik didn’t think that he had the strength to look up into someone else’s eyes. For a moment, Marik mentally cursed himself for letting Malik convince him to talk to Ryou instead of Bakura. He never good with this comforting shit. He’d much rather have a full out brawl with his best friend right now.
“You don’t have to talk to me. I know you don’t want to,” Ryou said as if reading the other’s mind. Marik frowned at this. How come everybody could read his mind so easily? Seeing the sadness in Ryou’s bright brown eyes, Marik took a seat next to him and stared out at the busy streets and the tall trees before them. The night was crisp.
“You know,” Marik said suddenly. “When I first met Malik, I couldn’t stand him but now…I think I love him.”
“You do?” Ryou asked with wide eyes. Instantly, a soft smile graced his delicate features. “That’s good. I’m happy for him.”
Marik nodded but with a slight strained voice said: “He doesn’t know.”
Ryou frowned. “Why don’t you tell him?”
“Because I don’t know how he’d react,” Marik confessed honestly. He didn’t know why but for some reason, Ryou was just extremely easy to open up to. Damn innocence.
“I think you should tell him,” Ryou said softly.
Marik smirked at this. “Have you told Bakura?”
Ryou didn’t reply for a while. He really didn’t have to because they both knew the answer. With longing brown eyes, Ryou looked over at Marik and smiled. It was a very sad smile. “…no,” he said and then unexpectedly added: “Are we cowards for not telling them?”
Malik was surprised by the question. He hadn’t thought about it that way. “I guess we are,” Marik admitted thoughtfully.
“No you’re not.”
Both Ryou and Marik looked up to find the source of the new voice only to find their counterparts staring at them from a distance.
