…First Impressions…

After the humans had disappeared into the mansion, Jou turned around swiftly and look at Yugi with angry eyes.

“I thought I told you to come with us,” Jou said sternly. “Do you know what kind of danger you could get us into?”

Yugi frowned as he looked down. He would hate himself if anything ever happened to any of his friends because of him. Jou, after seeing Yugi's sad expression, sighed softly. He felt bad for his close friend. All Yugi ever wanted was to be close to a human. To fulfill his desire. By this point both Malik and Ryou had realized that Jou and Yugi ought to be left alone so they were both back down in the underwater city. Jou looked around cautiously before turning back to Yugi.

“Listen Yuge. If you promise that you won't come back up here by yourself then I'll bring you back here tomorrow to see if we can spot those humans again. Deal?” Jou said.

Yugi looked up and smiled. “Deal!” he said.

Jou mentally patted himself on the back. At least now he wouldn't have to worry about Yugi coming up here by himself. He didn't want his friend's human fascination to get him in any type of danger. So that being settled, they both swam down and searched for Malik and Ryou who were currently floating in front of the castle, the castle where the king who ruled all the sea lived. It also happened to be the place where Yugi lived.

“Hey what are you guys doing?” Yugi asked.

“O nothing” Ryou said.

“Ya we were just waiting for you too,” Malik added.

Yugi just nodded and they continued to think about several things that they could do to keep them busy for the rest of the day. When it started getting dark, Malik and Ryou decided to retire.

“Well, see you guys tomorrow” Malik said.

“Night” Jou and Yugi said in unison as they waved goodbye to their two friends. Yugi then turned to face Jou.

“Shouldn't you be getting back to your house too? I bet Serenity is waiting for you” Yugi said.

“Ya I know and you know how I hate to worry my little sis” Jou smiled. After Jou said his goodbye he started to swim away but then turned around and said, “O and remember Yuge. Stay out of trouble.”

Yugi smiled and said, “I always do.”

After Jou was out of sight Yugi glanced upwards before shaking his head. `No,' he thought to himself 'I can't break my promise with Jou.' Yugi tried desperately to convince himself to just go back to the castle and go to bed but something else was telling him not to. `Well,' he thought, `a little peek couldn't hurt anyone. And besides there's probably no one up there.' Yugi slowly swam upwards until he reached the water's surface. He poked his head out and checked to see if there was anyone there. After he had made sure that the area was clear, he crawled up onto a rock and rested his chin on top of his hands while he looked out into the open space. It was so beautiful up here. Although no one really knew it, Yugi would give up practically anything to be a human. The life of a merman was not at all that interesting. Yugi was a free spirit who wanted so much more out of life. He was lost so much in his own thoughts that he barely had time to react when he noticed a shadow creeping on to the shore. Yugi hurriedly hid his head behind the rock that he was lying on top off and scarcely peered his eyes out to see who had interrupted his thoughts. His eyes widened in amazement as he realized that the person who sat on the shore at this very moment was the same person who had called out to him this morning. It was that beautiful human that they other humans called Yami. Yugi kept quiet where he was and listened intently to the other's ramblings.

“I swear that Seto is wrong!” he mumbled to himself. “I know what I saw and that sure as hell wasn't a mirage.”

Yugi listened some more to what the human was saying until something in particular grabbed his attention even further.

“Yes. I know those boys were real. Especially the one with the large amethyst eyes. The one that I locked eyes with…I just know it!…Or maybe I'm going crazy. At this point who really knows I mean I am talking to myself.”

Yugi felt his heart skip a beat. He was so excited that this human noticed his presence so much earlier today. “I wonder what his name was. I would give anything to see him again and ask.”

Yugi, even though he would give anything to see this human up close, knew that it would be far to dangerous to expose himself anymore than he already did. But there was just something about this human. Yugi didn't see the resemblance between this human and between the awful ones that he hears stories about all the time. This one seemed different. He seemed kind. Yugi then slid off the rock cautiously and looked below him at the water and then back at the human. `Well, it's now or never.' He thought boldly as he swam towards the shore discreetly. Yami was still lost in his own thoughts gazing at the stars when he heard the sweetest voice that he had ever heard in his life. He rocked forward in order to sit up straight and came face to face with none other than the boy who Yami was just thinking about.

“Yugi” said the gentle voice.

“What?” Yami said still bewildered.

“My name” the boy said.

“Yugi?” Yami asked. “That's such a pretty name.”

Yugi blushed slightly at this but since it was so dark outside the pink tint in Yugi's cheeks could not be seen.

“Tell me Yugi” Yami continued. “Why won't you come out of the water and come sit with me so we can talk?”

Yugi frowned before saying, “I can't”

Yami noticed the change in tone of the other so decided to ask something else.

“Well, do you live somewhere around here?”

“You could say that” Yugi smiled.

Yami just nodded. He really wanted to see if the young boy was alright because he didn't exactly believe that Yugi was completely ok but Yugi wouldn't come out of the water so he decided to do the only thing that he could think of. He stood up and ripped off his sit before stepping into the water. Yugi was actually not that far into the water. Everything from his waist up was out of the water so it only took Yami a few steps before he was close to Yugi.

“What are you doing?” Yugi asked nervously.

“Well you wouldn't come to me so I decided that I would come to you” Yami replied.

As Yami got closer to him Yugi backed away slightly. Yami noticed this and stopped walking. He didn't want to scare Yugi but for some reason he felt a strong need to protect this small boy.

“Yugi. I don't want to make you feel afraid. I'm sorry. I just wanted to take care of you” Yami said.

Yugi was shocked to hear this. His heart twitched with several emotions that he couldn't describe and it scared him.

“I have to go” Yugi said.

Yami nodded in understanding and Yugi opened to say something before he was overtaken by a big wave, which they both didn't notice until this very moment. The wave wasn't huge; it was just big enough to thrust Yugi forward. Enough so that he was forced right into Yami, which sent Yami falling backwards with Yugi on top of him. Their lips brushed gently against each other and Yugi's cheek went bright red. He quickly got off of Yami and swam under the water.

“Wait!” Yami yelled, “When can I see you again?”

A small head came out from the water as Yugi opened his mouth and said “This time tomorrow.” Seconds later he was gone. Yami, after he got over the shock of everything that happened, reached his hand up and glided his fingers of his lips and smiled. “Goodnight Yugi” he said quietly as he turned around and headed back inside. He didn't know that Yugi was still watching him from behind a rock. Yugi smiled after Yami walked away and touched his lips gently before smiling and saying “Goodnight Yami.”
