…New Alliances…
“Dinner is served” a butler dressed in black announced gracefully. The long wooden table, that Yugi had become so use to in his short time at the Kaiba mansion, was covered with all different types of food. In all Yugi's time of being a prince, he had never had the privilege to dine like this, and that was saying a lot. Even Jou was in shock as he took his seat at the right side of Seto's chair at the head of the table. Across from the excited blonde sat Yami who was accompanied on his left by his small friend Yugi. Yugi smiled delightfully across the table at Jou. He was overjoyed that Yami was able to convince Seto to let Jou dine with them tonight. The blonde was working so hard and Yugi felt like it was time Jou had a break. Jou was actually surprised when he was invited to join and had given the plate of food that he had made `especially' for Seto to one of the butler's and had specifically requested that Seto receive this particular plate. Before they began to eat, Seto instructed everyone to wait until everyone was present, or else it could be perceived as extreme rudeness. Jou glanced around anxiously and then turned towards the Yami.
“I thought that Bakura and Marik would not be joining us because they had some business to attend to,” Jou said impatiently but politely. In the short amount of time that he and Yugi had stayed here, Jou had definitely learned a thing or two about manners, which shocked Yugi considerably. However, when it came to the tall brunet, Jou was still the same stubborn, short-tempered Jou that Yugi had grown to love.
Yami turned his attention away from Yugi to answer Jou's question but was cut off by his condescending cousin.
“We are waiting for Anzu” Seto said in an annoyed fashion. The blue-eyed boy smirked widely and looked towards the blonde. “And who said you could talk, Mutt?”
Jou's face turned red instantly. “Stop calling me a Mutt, ya prick! I'm not your damn dog, Kaiba!” Jou yelled angrily.
“O I'd beg to differ” Seto scoffed.
Jou clenched his fist tightly. “Go ahead Kaiba! Call me a Mutt one more time and see what happens!” Jou threatened.
Seto smiled but nothing came out of his mouth. The three other individuals sitting there were actually quite surprised. After about a minute of silence, a brunette dressed in a lengthy blue evening dress appeared from the doorway and everyone had turned their attention away from the table. Yami could have sworn that he had saw Seto make a quick movement but by the time he looked at Seto, the brunet had stood up.
“Good evening Anzu” he said politely.
“Good evening Seto” Anzu replied genuinely.
Seto took out his hand and motioned towards Yugi. “This is Yugi, Anzu. I believe you two have already met, however” Seto said before turning his hand towards Jou. “And this is Mutt” Seto finished with a smile.
Jou stood up angrily. “Why you little bit—“
“Anzu, please take a seat” Yami said quickly as he stood up and pulled out a chair next to Jou, which Anzu sat in gratefully. Jou and Seto both took their seats but Jou's eyes remained fixed on Kaiba angrily. Yugi looked around nervously. Silence accompanied the already thick air of tension as people dug into their plates slowly. Fortunately Anzu began to speak, much to Yugi's delight, or so he thought.
“So Yugi, how have you enjoyed your stay here so far?” the brunette asked innocently.
Yugi smiled brightly. “It's been great!” Yugi said with sincerity. “Yami and Seto have truly been good to Jou and myself,” the boy said.
Jou, who shoving mouth loads of food down his throat, grunted humorously at the name of the taller brunet being referred to as a good host, which earned him several glances from around the table. The blonde didn't take notice, however, since his eyes were fixed on his plate.
Yugi looked back at Anzu and noticed something in her expression change but couldn't exactly say what. He began to feel uneasy and looked to Yami, who was smiling at him. Yami's smile made everyone else seem nonexistent. Yugi had never noticed before how devilishly handsome and charming Yami was. Or maybe he did notice it, but now, it was different. Yugi had felt so attracted to Yami in so many different ways. A deep red blush came to Yugi's face as he realized that he was just staring intensely at the crimson-eyed boy.
“Yugi, is something wrong? You look flushed,” Yami said with a concerned tone.
Yugi's blush intensified. “Ya, I'm fine” Yugi said and played with his fingers under the table. “Um, can you excuse me for a second?” the small boy said. He didn't wait for an answer before getting up from his chair and quickly exiting from the room. Yami blinked in a confused manner as he watched the door that Yugi had just left through. Jou also was kind of bothered by Yugi's peculiar behavior and threw down his napkin before standing up and following his small friend's trail.
“I'll be right back,” Jou said before he disappeared.
Seto rolled his eyes. At least Yugi had asked if he could be excused. He swore, sometimes he thought that Jou was not even human because he was so ineloquent. He was probably a barbarian of some kind.
Anzu looked at Yami and mentally smiled. This would be a perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with Yami. She stood up gracefully and walked around the table before taking her rightful seat next to Yami.
“You know, Anzu” Yami began as he noticed a quick move “Yugi's probably going to be back any sec—“
“O, it's ok. I just wanted to spend some time next to you” Anzu smiled seductively.
Seto gagged mentally before standing up and walking towards the kitchen. “If you'll two excuse me, I seemed to have lost my appetite. I hope you enjoy your stay Anzu” Seto said and watched the pleading look that his pathetic cousin was giving him.
`Take one for the team' was the look that Seto gave Yami was basically saying before the brunet walked out.
Yami swore that he would have his revenge as he looked at Anzu and feigned a smile. Meanwhile, Yugi splashed cold water from the sink repeatedly on his face to get the pink tints of embarrassment to go away. After he dried his face, he looked in the bathroom mirror and sighed.
“Come on, Yugi. Get it together” Yugi said aloud to himself. “Get real, someone like Yami could never love someone like me” Yugi said sadly as he sat on the edge of the massively large bath. He rubbed his legs up and down. “I mean, I'm not even really human,” Yugi said and a tear slid down his cheek. He was startled when a hand wiped the tear away and looked up to see none other than Jou.
“Yes you are” Jou whispered.
“What?” Yugi said in confusion.
“Yes, you are human. You were a mermaid, Yuge. But you're not anymore. That's not who you are anymore” Jou said as he pointed towards Yugi's pale short legs
Yugi's eyes widened in fear. “Jou, did you hear me just now?”
Jou nodded and before Yugi could say anything more, Jou put his finger to his lips.
“Yugi, you don't need to explain” the blonde said. “I knew way before you did how you felt about Yami. Why do you think I'm still here?” Jou asked. Yugi looked down at the ground, but his face was pulled back up to Jou's face by the blonde's hand. “It's because I know you love him and I'm willing to do anything in my power to see you happy.”
Yugi's eyes watered as he lunged on to Jou's neck and held on tightly. “O Jou, you're the best friend anyone could ever ask for!” Yugi said happily.
Jou smiled. “I know” the blonde said. He then pushed Yugi a little so that Yugi was forced to look at him. “You know Yugi. If you really want something and care about it, then you have to fight for it,” Jou said.
Yugi nodded. “Thanks Jou!” Yugi said before he gave his friend one last squeeze and ran out of the bathroom. Jou followed the small boy out of the room and smiled confidently as he leaned against the wall.
“Jou, you are just too good” the blonde grinned widely before a deep voice startled him.
“Ya, that'll be the day when you can actually do something helpful”
Jou turned on his heel quickly and glared at the smirking brunet in front of him.
“What the hell are you doing here, Kaiba?” Jou said distastefully.
Seto shrugged. “Well, I just happened to hear that your friend was in a little bit of a dilemma” Seto said.
“And?” Jou snapped, “What does it matter to you?”
“Well,” Seto said, “I thought that I could be useful.”
Jou looked around suspiciously before his gaze fell back on the tall brunet. “What the fuck are you up to?” Jou asked.
“I'm not up to anything, Mutt. I just thought that since I knew Yami best then I could help you help Yugi” Seto explained but then began to walk away. “But obviously, you don't want my help.”
Jou watched as Seto began to turn the corner and quickly went through all the possible consequences there could be if he decided to take Kaiba up on his offer. It would be extremely helpful if someone could find out exactly what was going through Yami's mind. And who was closer to the boy than Seto. Jou knew he was going to regret this but he wanted Yugi to be happy.
Seto smiled as he turned the corner. `3…2…1' Seto counted down in his head.
“Kaiba! Wait!” Jou called out and walked up to the taller boy. `Gotcha' Seto thought as he turned around to meet honey brown eyes. For a few minutes, Seto and Jou whispered quietly. When they were done, Jou nodded before saying “So I'll see you tomorrow morning then.”
Seto also nodded. “Ok Mutt.”
Jou smiled. “That's okay. Call me whatever you like because tonight you're stomach is not going to allow you to sleep” Jou said as he snickered and thought back to when he poisoned Kaiba's food with laxatives. What the blonde didn't expect Seto to do is smile back.
“O I'll be sleeping fine tonight, Jou” Seto said before starting to walk away.
Jou was both confused at Kaiba's chipper attitude and shocked that Kaiba had just called him Jou.
“O by the way” Kaiba said without even turning around “I switched our plates.”
Before Jou could say a word, his stomach began to growl and he disappeared into the bathroom where he had consoled Yugi just a little bit earlier.
