…One Last Trick...

Seto Kaiba peered out into the vast ocean in front of him from his spot on the balcony. He looked out to where the sea looked like it connected with the sky. A few months ago, if someone told him all that was to occur then he would have laughed for days non-stop. But now…it was real. The long dark aqua cape that the tall brunet wore blew hopelessly in the gentle breeze. His hair also moved around about his head softly causing his bangs to fall in his face and shield his crystal blue eyes. The sun was setting, which created purple and pink rays that shot out across the sky. Below him, servants sat in there assigned seats and Yami, dressed handsomely in a black tuxedo and a white shirt, stood frozen at the front of the small white alter that the servants had managed to set up for their master’s wedding. His once bright and determined crimson eyes were now dull and lifeless.

Seto looked down with an emotionless expression. However, his eyes, unlike his cousin’s eyes, were shining with emotion. He didn’t admit it to himself but he was hurt. His cousin, and loyal friend, was getting married and the brunet was not his ‘best man.’ He thought back to when the two were younger. Yami had always told him how Seto would be there right next to him when he got married and he always said this with a smile on his face. Usually this remark was followed by Seto rolling his eyes and explaining to Yami how no one would ever want to marry him. This thought made Seto’s lips curl into a small smirk even though everything around him was in such chaos.

He snapped out of his daze when he saw that Bakura and Marik were in their right positions. As was Yugi and Jou. He didn’t even turn around as he ordered: “Go.”

Within a second, Ryou and Malik left the room. After Seto heard the door open and close swiftly he began to think again. This was there last chance to get Yami back. If this failed, then there was nothing that anyone could do. As an afterthought, the brunet added aloud cynically: “I wonder if true love can really conquer all.”

Anzu was anything but stupid. Being fully aware that someone might try to pull something at her wedding, she hired a guard to watch out for any suspicious behavior. At the moment the guard in question stood looking down with a puzzled expression at the two small boys in front of him. They were both dressed in all black suits, which were identical to what he was wearing. They also wore dark shades just like his. After a few more seconds of examining the two in front of him, he spoke in a deep voice that was filled with uncertainty: “So, you’re telling me that Anzu has sent you two to guard the wedding as well?”

The boy with blonde hair nodded his head before speaking: “She wishes for you to watch the mansion instead. She believes that as long as you are at the front door then no one can get out who shouldn’t be out.”

The tall man raised a questioning eyebrow. He wasn’t quite sure if he should trust these two but what they said did make sense. Anzu needed security everywhere so she probably wanted the biggest and strongest man at the mansion door. After a few more seconds of flattering himself, the man nodded and walked off in the direction of the mansion. The two boys who were left smiled at each other when the guard had entered the front door.

“That was easier than I thought” Ryou said quietly as almost to himself. Malik nodded in agreement.

“That’s how men like that are” Malik said almost bitterly. “All big and tough but as gullable as ever!”

Ryou giggled at Malik’s remark before the seriousness of the situation they were in overcame them and they put all jokes aside. Their part of the job was done. They had eliminated the threat of someone interrupting their plan, which was all Seto had instructed them to do. Neither of them were able to figure out how Seto knew that Anzu would hire a guard but then again Seto was just intelligent like that. Now they would just wait and watch the events that were about to unfold while Seto watched from above and made sure that everything went according to plan.

While waiting patiently for the bride to exit the house, Malik and Ryou stood out of sight from everyone else, except from Seto of course. Malik thought that this was a perfect opportunity to talk to Ryou about what had happened between him and Bakura earlier. Unfortunately Malik wasn’t so…gentle when it came to these things and wasn’t the time to beat around the bush.

“Do you have feelings for Bakura, Ryou?” Malik said quite directly. The boy who stood next to him blushed a dark red and fear and regret filled the chocolate-colored eyes.

“I-I d-don’t k-“ Ryou stuttered mercilessly but in the end he couldn’t finish. He just stopped speaking all together as tears began to form at the bottom of his eyes. Malik all of the sudden felt regret and pity begin to sweep through his chest and he patted Ryou’s shoulder sympathetically.

“I’m sorry Ryou” Malik said softly but was surprised when Ryou shook his head violently.

“No, no, no I’m sorry Malik. Please don’t hate me. I–“ Ryou began but was cut off by Malik’s shocked voice.

“What do you mean? I could never hate you. Why would you think that?” Malik asked, tilting his head to the side.

Ryou looked at Malik and said: “Because I like Bakura…I know how much you don’t like humans…I don’t mean to betray you–“

“Oh Ryou!” Malik said suddenly. “ Don’t be so silly! I wouldn’t hate you because you like a human.” Malik then became more mellow and said: “But I guess I don’t blame you for thinking that way. The way I go on talking about humans. I’m sorry. I just…well after what happened to our parents–“

Ryou hushed Malik by raising his hand. “You don’t have to explain. That was a hard time for all of us” Ryou said sadly. “But we can’t blame all of the humans for what a few did. There a bad humans and bad mermaids. But there are also good mermaids like us just like there are good humans.”

Malik nodded at Ryou’s words. “I guess I just let my bias and prejudice get the best of me” Malik said with a weak smile. “And besides” Malik added on more cheerfully, “it looks like I’m going to have to get use to this human thing anyways.”

Ryou smiled. “Thanks for understanding.” The albino then let out a deep sigh, which caught Malik’s attention.

“You think that Bakura’s going to hate you for what you did?” Malik said matter-of-factly. Ryou nodded.

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that if I were you” Malik said with a smile. Ryou looked at the blonde with confusion but decided for the moment to let what Malik just said slide. Instead he had something else on his mind.

“Malik?” Ryou said.

Malik turned his gaze at the petite boy and said: “Yeah?”

Ryou hesitated for a moment before saying: “Do you like Marik?”

Malik look like a deer caught in headlights but only for a mere second before he punched the albino in the arm playfully.

“Shut up Ryou! Of course I don’t! I despise him!” Malik said with a laugh.

Ryou smiled back at Malik before saying to himself: ‘Sure Malik. Sure you don’t.’

Marik and Bakura stood motionlessly in their hiding spots. Words were not being shared between the two as each were lost in their own separate thoughts. It was Marik who broke the silence.

“Hey, Bakura?” Marik said in a serious tone.

“Hmm?” Bakura said indifferently as he was still thinking about a particular albino.

“Do you think this is really going to work?”

Bakura turned his attention to the blonde next to him. “How the hell am I suppose to know?”

Marik scowled. “What if it doesn’t?”

Bakura shrugged and said: “Then Yami’s screwed.”

Marik glared at Bakura. “This is serious Bakura! This is Yami we’re talking about. Not another one of our stupid friends that you screw over on a daily basis. Without him, we wouldn’t have a home. He’s the one who convinced Seto.”

Bakura didn’t respond for a moment and looked as though he was lost in thought. “What can we do?” Bakura said logically. “All we can do is hope. No sense in worrying about it.”

Marik looked as if he was going to say something but in the end no words came out of his mouth. Silence filled the atmosphere once again as Bakura went back to thinking about Ryou and Marik went back to worrying about their close friend and it was not long after that a certain Egyptian escaped into his thoughts as well. Bakura was right. All they could do is wait until it was there time to do their part. And then after that…just hope.

Jou peeked out from behind a large rock and looked around. After a second, he looked back down at the young bride standing next to him. “Are you ready Yuge?”

Yugi flashed Jou a fleeting smile. He was trying very hard to be sure of himself but he couldn’t. Jou could obviously tell but he didn’t say anything to that extent.

“I just saw Ryou and Malik get rid of that guard so it’s almost time. We should probably but your veil-thingy on” Jou said. The blonde then flipped over the shiny white veil so that it was now covering Yugi’s face.

“Wow! You almost can’t see through this thing!” Jou said with a smile.

“Well, I can see perfectly fine” Yugi said softly.

“That’s good” Jou replied. “It wouldn’t be the best thing if you tripped or something. Especially since this needs to be done quickly. I already know that Seto would have my head if something went wrong.”

Yugi giggled playfully and Jou was glad that he managed to get his friend to smile again. “You know Jou,” Yugi began, “I’m really happy for you. I’m glad that you and Seto have found each other.”

Jou gave his small friend a sincere smile before saying: “It makes me really happy to hear you say things like that Yuge. You are my best friend and it means the world to me that you’re happy for me.”

Yugi nodded. “Just like it means the world to me that you’ve stood by me this entire time. Thanks!” Yugi said before embracing the blonde tightly. Jou smiled and returned the hug and then turned his attention back to what was going on the shore. The large rock that they were behind was next to the alter, which gave Jou a perfect view of Yami and everything else. Jou all of the sudden jumped a little when he heard music begin to play. He was still peeking out of the side of the rock when he spoke out: “Okay Yugi, it’s almost time. You sure you’re ready?”

Jou was surprised when he didn’t hear a response. He turned around quickly only to see no one. Fear and panic began to set in as Jou began to look around the area. He soon noticed a figure dressed in white at the bottom of the shore near the water.

Jou placed a hand over his beating heart and quickly ran to the shore. “Yuge! What are you thinking?!” Jou whispered loudly. “Are you trying to get us caught?” Jou said as he reached the shore and pulled his best friend back to their place behind the rock. Jou looked around and soon realized that no one had seen them except probably Seto who was most likely cursing at them from where he stood on the balcony. Jou turned to face his friend who still had the veil on. Luckily Anzu had not appeared from the mansion yet. “Okay” Jou said taking a deep breath. “Let’s try this again. You stay here, hidden, with me and when Anzu comes to the alter and is about to kiss Yami then Bakura and Marik will grab her and I push you out onto the alter and YOU kiss Yami, hopefully breaking the spell. Got it?”

The figure in front of him nodded. “Great. And let’s try not to give me a heart attack. You must want Seto to kill me” Jou said aloud and then to himself added: ‘Wow, those heels really do make Yugi look a lot taller.’

“How hard can this possibly be?” Seto said aloud agrily to himself. Was it really that hard to keep Yugi still until it was time. Ra! Why did he have to do everything if he wanted things done right?

He lost his train of thought when he saw Anzu appear from the mansion and walk slowly and gracefully down the long red rug that was laid out in front of her. It ended at the alter. The dress looked awfully a lot like Yugi’s which was good but not like it really mattered. As long as Yami believed the he was kissing Anzu and didn’t try to fight Yugi off then everything would go as plan. Of course, that was only if that damn puppy of his could control Yugi.

The unfamiliar man stood at the front of the alter next to Yami and waited until the bride stood beside him before he begun. ‘Pretty’ the man thought as he scanned the bride quickly. The beautiful, long, white dress the the girl was wearing was accompanied by a pretty and opaque veil. He was actually quite surprised that she could see through it. After both the groom and the bride stood in front of him, the man began to speak in a loud voice. It was quite boring for a while and people only started to pay attention when the man said: “Before these two share their vows, is there any who object to these two getting married?”

All the servants gulped at this point. They were all very faithful to both Seto and Yami and they knew that the latter was making a mistake but no one wanted to say it. However, one brave soul stood to his feet and raised his hand high.

“I-I ob-object!” said the servant with fear but determination.

The bride looked towards the man and swiftly raised her hand and snapped her fingers. Almost instantly, Ryou and Malik appeared in the dark shades and suits and picked up the man from the ground. A moment later, they were gone. The bride then waved her hand as she beckoned for the minister to continue.

“Alright then” he said unsurely.

Meanwhile, Malik and Ryou were talking to then man, that they just kicked out of the wedding, out of sight from everyone else.

“Once again, we’re sorry” Ryou said quietly.

“Yeah, if no guards came then Anzu would get suspicious. Hopefully she didn’t notice us too much” Malik said.

The servant nodded in understanding. “Don’t worry, as long as you stop this marriage from happening then do whatever you must.”

Malik nodded and then excused both himself and Ryou. They had to get back to the wedding as soon as possible and when they did get back they heard the minister speaking.

“Do you Anzu Manzaki take Yami Motou to be your husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do you part?”

“I do” Anzu said in a whisper so low that half of servants would swear that she didn’t say anything at all.

“And Yami Motou do you take Anzu Manzaki to be your wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do you part?”

For a moment, Yami didn’t respond. He was shaking slightly and it was only noticeable to a few. From Seto’s perspective, it looked as if Yami was fighting with himself.’So he wasn’t completely gone,’ Seto said to himself.

“I-I d-do” Yami finally said.

The minister nodded. “Then I know pronounce you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”

The groom and the bride turned to face each other and closed the space between them. Right before Yami flipped over Anzu’s veil, a loud booming voice overcame everyone.

“NOW!” Seto yelled.

Within a second, Bakura and Marik had sprung out from behind the alter and grabbed Anzu, covering her mouth so that she didn’t scream. Jou immediately pushed Yugi out onto the alter and next to Yami, who was still looking up in the sky at Seto. However, Yami’s attention was directed elsewhere when he felt warm, greedy lips cover his. He tried to look to see who he was kissing but the veil still covered the person’s upper face including their eyes and nose. Yami, assuming that it was Anzu, did not fight back. He couldn’t.

Bakura and Marik smiled down at the figure they were holding.

“How does it feel to watch your husband kiss someone else?” Bakura said while laughing devilishly.

Marik smiled as well. “Let’s give her a better view” Marik said as he lifted up Anzu’s veil.

“WHAT THE BLOODY HELL?!” Bakura yelled as he looked down at the girl that squirmed in his grasp. A girl who was not Anzu.

Marik looked down at the girl and then up at Seto who had noticed by now that Bakura and Marik did not hold Anzu in their arms.

“What the hell is going on?” Seto said with wide eyes as he disappeared from the balcony and soon came running outside on the shore.

Jou was also shocked and almost fell over when he heard a very familiar voice scream.

“JOU!! HELP ME!! PLEASE! SOMEONE!”

Jou looked around immediately.

“YUGI!?” the blonde said in shock. The voice had appeared to be coming from the water. Jou didn’t even think twice as he ran to the water, threw off his shoes, and dived into the vast sea in front of him.

“Wait what?” Marik said confused as he watched Jou’s actions. Malik and Ryou also ran to the front.

“Wait, if Yugi’s in the water then who’s kissing Yami?!” Seto yelled.

Yugi pulled against the think chain ferociously. He was going to die. When someone had first grabbed him and tied his foot to a rusty chain that was attached to some weight, his head was at least out of water. Someone had just tied his hands and gagged his mouth but luckily they had put the weight on a large pile of rocks that was under water and it was so high that his head remained over the water. He wasn’t too far from the shore as well but he was definitely far enough. The person had placed him behind a rock so that no one could see him and the gag prevented him from screaming. It was the same rock that Yugi was behind when he first saw Yami and now it appeared as if it would be the place where he died. He had been moving and struggling so much to untie his hands that he unknowingly moved the weight to the edge of the pile of large rocks. He finally got his hands loose and quickly untied the gag around his mouth and screamed out. The quick motion, however, had caused the weight to shift over just a tad bit more, taking the weight completely off of the pile causing Yugi to get pulled under water all the way until the weight reached the sea floor. Once again, it was not too deep but it was deep enough for Yugi to drown and die. Right now, Yugi was yanking the chain attached to his foot harshly but it was in vain. Tears came to his eyes. So this is how it would all end. Yami and Anzu would be married and he would die. Not the happy-ever-after that Yugi had wanted. Suffocation was attacking him. It wouldn’t be long now. He stopped pulling at the chain and began to close his eyes…but then he thought he saw crimson eyes staring back into his.

‘Yami?’ he thought.
