Chapter 2
There were several tense days - almost two weeks - before the bomb dropped, as it were. Feeling no flickers from the Sennen Puzzle, Yuugi let his naïve mind assume that everything was all right, but just in case, he took steps.
He took apart the Puzzle, but as he removed the first piece, it hurt, hurt so bad that he collapsed and Seto had to rush him to the hospital.
For although they were not meant to click any longer, they had still once been two halves of a soul, once, a very long time ago… but now they were no longer that way.
Could one live with half a soul?
Yami certainly had no problems doing so - he had Mahaado to ground him, and as they lay intertwined in one another's arms, he briefly wondered if Mahaado were his Ka. It would be rather interesting… might also explain why Mahaado's Magician of Illusion had been empty armor…
Hmm. That was an interesting thought.
In any case, he felt complete now; whole… the tearing pain from when he'd entered the Shadow Realm was gone, vanished as if it had never been.
It was quite nice.
But in the end, at the end of the day, they had their work to do.
A slow smile curved the Pharaoh's lips as he and his Consort stepped outside the Castle of Dark Illusions, watching the monsters gather. The were waiting for him…
And in that instant, the veil before the worlds vanished.
He really didn't care for the first hundred days of his reign. The monsters ran free, killing everything in their path. But he left one city unscathed, and that was Domino, Japan. It alone remained in pristine condition, though destruction spread outside in a swath around it.
He let them wait.
Of course, leaving a plane untouched had another purpose. The other countries automatically assumed that it was Japan that was the culprit.
Pity.
They were wrong in one way, but right in another…
So in the end, he didn't have to do that much. There had been a full-blown world war for about two years first… and they had pulled out their nuclear weapons, despite their promises to never do so.
Fear was such a wonderful motivator!
He and his monsters just watched, and waited, and smiled… and in the night, they attacked, but the people just blamed other countries. Whispers of terrorist groups from every shade of reality spread.
It was ever so convenient…
Because it made takeover so much easier!
Of course, he wasn't quite happy with the state of the earth, but… the realm was more than happy to fix things.
The shadows brushed over ruined cities and painted them in bright metallic. Rains of Mercy showered other areas.
It was quite lovely.
Of course, there were a few that remained, but he did not expect much resistance, and of course he chose Egypt as the base in which to build his new Empire.
That was where it all truly began.
His eyes were the palest purple of twilight innocence, but they would not fool him any longer…
Yuugi glared defiantly at the one who had once been his other half. The Pharaoh was breathtakingly beautiful, garbed in shimmering black linen and winking with gold and rubies. Upon his forehead glimmered a golden crown marked with the eye of Ra.
Yuugi's heart skipped a beat as he recognized several of the others in the room. Isis stood there, though her clothes were different, more… ancient, translucent white and gold and blue. Shadi stood at her side, attired much the same.
There were others too…
That man over there, he resembled the Celtic Guardian, only his eyes were dark blue and his hair was black. In his hands rested the Sennen Scales…
And then there was the other man, the one seated at Yami's right hand, with the Sennen Ring around his neck… he looked familiar, but why?
Yuugi shook his head. Now was not the time to ponder such things!
“Release Seto.” He said firmly. That was the only reason he had dared enter the walled city. The monsters had surprisingly allowed him to pass unscathed.
Yami had taken Kaiba… well, perhaps not directly, but he had seen, the girl with silver-blue hair and blue eyes… fly away with him…
It was not hard to infer what she was.
But he could not summon. He had no power… and the monsters listened only to their Pharaoh of the shadows - and their chosen ones.
He was light…
He was not Yami…
Yami smiled, as he turned to face the man seated next to him - though if he had been garbed differently Yuugi would have been hard-pressed to tell his gender. “Well, my dear Mahaado… whatever should we do?”
The man's eyes settled on Yuugi with a hint of something he couldn't quite decipher. “We could use him as an example, my Pharaoh…”
“Yes, that would work… a fitting tribute to betrayal…”
Were they going to kill him? Well, he wasn't afraid of death! Besides, if he died, Yami would die too.
At least that was what Ryou had whispered to him before he and Bakura had been split. Someone had wanted the Sennen Ring very badly… someone had managed to kill Bakura for it… even though Bakura had fought well, fought for several months before death claimed him…
And now someone had it.
He cast another quick glance around the room. The Blue-Eyes Girl was there, and was that - the Sennen Eye? Yes, it glinted in her left eye socket like a broken mirror, and she had the gall to smile at him!
His unease was starting to spread. He'd broken the puzzle and scattered the pieces into the ocean, dropping the pieces away one by one, as he and Seto flew the Blue-Eyes Jet over the seas, but had that been enough?
Malik was there, or perhaps Marik. No, it was both of them, hands wrapped around the hilt of the Sennen Rod with identical looks of glee. He had no doubt ill tidings would befall, should he fall into their hands…
“Don't kill him.”
