Chapter 10: A Surprise for Marik

Victory was nearly his. All he had to do was attack with his Dark Magician, and he would win. He had prevented the Rare Hunter from drawing all 5 pieces of Exodia. The Rare Hunter had run out of time. "Rare Hunter. It appears that the duel is nearly over. All of your efforts for obtaining my Puzzle have been wasted!"

The Rare Hunter grinned. "Is that so? I have one more trick up my sleeve…"

Yami narrowed his eyes. "You have no trap or magick cards on the field, and no monsters to defend your life points with."

"Whoever said it was on the dueling field?"

The Rare Hunter started chanting in an ancient language. A dull redness began to appear around Yami. Crying out, he clutched his chest painfully with one hand. "What's…happening?" he managed in a choked voice. He could barely breathe.

Yami! Yugi cried. Are you ok? What's going on?

Yami sensed great fear coming from him. I'm not sure, Yugi. But I can feel myself getting weaker…

The Rare Hunter stopped chanting. "My spell is literally draining your life energy away. Therefore, you won't be able to finish the duel and will have to surrender!" He laughed. "Whoever said I had to win this duel fairly?"

He's right…I don't think…I can …continue…

Then I'll finish the duel!

No, Yugi! If you come out…then you'll be…caught in his…spell as well!

Yugi knew Yami was right, but what else could they do? They couldn't just let Marik win and obtain his Puzzle. And what about Dwenny? What would happen to her? They needed a miracle, and they needed one fast.

Some time during the duel, Dwenny had blacked out again, both from the stupid spell over her as well as from the loss of blood. But now, she sensed Yami was in terrible danger, and she forced herself to wake up and open her eyes. She gasped when she saw that Yami was surrounded by a dull red aura. Her surprise turned to anger when she realized that he was in pain. She turned her head slightly to one side, then to the other, noticing the amused smiles beneath the hoods. Her emerald eyes grew dark with a cold fury as she looked at the grinning Rare Hunter. He was the cause of her beloved's suffering. She stopped herself. No, not him. Someone else entirely, working through him. The Rare Hunter was just a puppet, a tool. No matter. They will both pay, and anyone else who dares threaten Yami.

Dwenny closed her yes, allowing her anger and fury to fuel the dark magick within her. When she opened her eyes again, they were no longer their normal emerald green, but now a cold, jet black. She could feel the dark magick flowing through her body, giving her strength and power beyond measure. The Rare Hunter's pathetic little spell was no match for her magick. With just a thought, Dwenny broke the metal collar on her neck as well as the chains binding her wrists. The clutter of metal hitting the ground startled the robed men and the Rare Hunter. They all turned to stare at Dwenny, now free, with wide, open mouths.

"Impossible!" cried the Rare Hunter. "There is no way she can break through my spell. It's too strong!"

Dwenny laughed. "You have no idea what truly powerful magick is." She grinned wickedly. "But I'll be more than happy to show you!" She spoke menacingly, narrowing her cold, dark eyes at him.

The Rare Hunter's own eyes were wide with fear as he felt her power. "Marcus!" he called out desperately. "Hurry! Kill her with your sword!"

Marcus raised his sword to attack, ready to strike. But Dwenny raised a hand towards him, and he found himself completely frozen, his attack stopped with merely a gesture. Dwenny slowly turned to him, and gave him a look, as if to say, Please, you CAN'T be serious. Marcus's eyes widened with fear as Dwenny slowly shook her head, a small smile forming on her lips. Then the smile disappeared, her eyes narrowing again, and with a wave of her hand she flung Marcus in to the nearby stack of crates. Wooden boards creaked and snapped as Marcus hit them full force. His body limped unconsciously.

The Rare Hunter was even more terrified now, as Dwenny began to slowly walk towards the dueling platform. "Idiots!" he called out frantically to the robed men. "What are you doing just standing there?! STOP HER!!!"

Dwenny sensed the men approaching, and she carelessly waved a hand at them, without much thought. The men went flying into some more crates. They wouldn't be a problem any more. Dwenny continued towards the dueling platform, her face expressionless.

The Rare Hunter was really starting to panic now, after witnessing Dwenny's destructive power. Marik could deal with her on his own. He was out of here! The Rare Hunter grabbed his deck, then turned to jump off the dueling platform and make a run for it.

However, Dwenny had other ideas. She had already reached the platform, and saw the Rare Hunter ready to make his escape. "You're not going anywhere, Rare Hunter! At least, not until you pay for what you've done!" She focused her magick on him, lifting him into the air with one hand.

"Ahhhhhhhh! Put me down!"

"I'll deal with you in a second." Dwenny turned toward Yami. He had already sunk to his knees from the pain and weakness. Dwenny could barely see his pointy hair, but could still feel strongly his pain. Raising her other arm towards him, she gently sent a wave of her magick his way, easily breaking the Rare Hunter's spell. The dull red aura faded around him and Yami found he could breathe without problems again. He shakily got to his feet and looked around his surroundings. His crimson eyes widened upon seeing the still bodies of Marcus and the other robed men in the pile of broken wood. He heard a scream above him, and looked up to see the Rare Hunter dangling in the air, his eyes wide with fright. Yami then turned his gaze back down towards the floor, finding the cause of all of this. He was shocked to see that his love's eyes were no longer the emerald green that he loved, but an unrecognizable cold black, filled with fury. He wondered what could have caused this sudden change.

Dwenny noticed Yami staring at her. "Alright now?" she asked.

Her voice sounded empty, emotionless. Not at all like his Dwenny. "I'm…I'm fine," he said a little uncertainly.

"Good," came another flat reply. Dwenny looked up at the Rare Hunter. "Now. As for you." She moved her hand, making the Rare Hunter float down so he was now before her. "I know you work for another. I can sense his presence, his dark magick. He helped you with those spells, now didn't he? I also know that he has the power to speak through you." She clenched her jaw, narrowing her eyes. "I want a word with him. NOW. And if he decides to leave you "hanging", then you're going to have hell to pay!"

The Rare Hunter was completely terrified by now. He didn't want to anger the witch any further. "Master Marik…" he whispered. "Please, help me! Talk to her!"

Dwenny was disgusted by his pitiful voice. She waited impatiently for something to happen, until she felt the other's presence more strongly. The Rare Hunter's eyes were now glossed over, his words no longer his own.

"So," said the mind-controlled Rare Hunter, "it appears that you are more powerful than any of us expected. Why do you align yourself with one so weak, when you could combine forces with me and become unstoppable?"

Dwenny laughed. "And what makes you so powerful? Because you can control mind?" She laughed again. "Please. That's child's play compared to what I can do."

Marik grew angry at having his powers mocked. "Once I have what I want, then I will have unimaginable power! More that you'll ever have!"

Dwenny wasn't impressed. "And how exactly do you plan on getting this power? Through idiots like this?" She nodded towards the Rare Hunter.

"By combining the 3 Egyptian God cards with the powers of the Millennium Puzzle, I will gain control of the Pharaoh's powers and become Pharaoh myself! Then no one will be able to stop me, and I will rule the world! But to get the Puzzle, I or one of my Ghouls will have to defeat little Yugi in a duel first."

Yami's eyes widened. He had such power within him? Must be that hidden power Dwenny once spoke of.

So that's why he's always trying to beat me in a duel, and why he wants my puzzle box! Yugi said. He paused. Yami? Are you ok?

But Yami didn't respond. His attention was back on Dwenny, wondering if she would be tempted to join Marik's forces. If she did, he wasn't sure he'd be able to continue…

Dwenny had no intention of joining Marik. She found his world conquest bit rather dull and boring. In a bored tone, she asked, "And what happens to the Pharaoh's spirit when you take his powers?"

"He is sent forever to the Shadow Realm, along with little Yugi!"

This got Dwenny's attention. Focusing her magick, she peered through the Rare Hunter's dull eyes, searching for the one controlling him. Easily, she found him, this Marik person, but to her dismay his eyes were covered by a hood. She saw an item in his hand, which she recognized as the Millennium Rod. The source of all his power. She smiled a little to herself, thinking how fun it would be to take it from him. Not that it had much power. It's powers paled in comparison to her own. No WONDER he wanted more power. Dwenny smiled to herself again. He was about to get it.

"Marik," she said quietly, almost deadly.

"What?" he asked in annoyance, irritated that he hadn't seemed to impress her.

"You should have chosen someone else's powers to steal. For you will never get the Pharaoh's." Dwenny said, still quiet. "But don't be saddened, for I'm going to give you a little taste of MY magick. You like controlling minds so much? Well, let's see how YOU like having YOUR mind invaded!" She said this last line with deadly coldness. Focusing her darkest magick, as powerful as she could, she sent it full force, through the Rare Hunter puppet and directly to Marik, as well as this message: "I'm coming for you…"

Marik screamed in pain as the dark magick attacked his mind. He clutched his head, causing him to drop the Millennium Rod, breaking his hold over the Rare Hunter. A moment later, the attack was over. He rubbed his throbbing head, breathing heavily. He never felt so much power before. It MUST belong to him!

Back at the warehouse, the Rare Hunter's eyes returned to normal. His body slumped in the air. Dwenny could no longer feel Marik's presence. He was gone. Suddenly, Dwenny felt rather light-headed. That last attack really drained her magick. She help a hand to her head as she let the Rare Hunter's body fall to the floor with a soft thump. She staggered back a few steps. Now that the threat was over, the punishments given, she could feel the dark magick receding back deep within her, once again lying in wait to be called upon. Dwenny blinked a few times as the dark magick retreated, her eyes returning back to their normal emerald green. Feeling incredibly exhausted, her tired eyes gazed up into Yami's still-stunned face. "Yami?" she whispered, before she collapsed onto the floor unconscious.

I feel so proud. I was in the sudden mood to write last night around midnight, and I didn't stop till the chapter was finished (around 3am). (I write in a notebook first, then type it up later). *shrugs* So now we know why not to get Dwenny angry…heh heh. Next chapter, the Council makes its appearance. Should be interesting (I hope). Hope you enjoyed the chapter, and please review! Thanks a bunch!
