Chapter 12: Seeking Answers of the Past

The Council of Magick had just sentenced her to death. They were strict, not tolerating the breaking of rules too well. But maybe they can make an exception, Dwenny thought. She took a deep breath. "Council. I had no choice in using dark magick. If I hadn't, then Marik would have won the Millennium Puzzle. Then all would have been lost. I was only doing my assignment." A good argument.

But apparently not good enough.

Noden shook his head. "WE would have found a way to stop him. Light can always defeat the dark." He narrowed his eyes at her.

Dwenny regarded him with a cool gaze. "But sometimes, you need to fight fire with fire," she said quietly.

This only seemed to anger Noden even more. "ENOUGH!" he shouted, his voice ringing throughout the room. "You are but a mere Seeker, while I am an Elder. My knowledge of the magick arts greatly surpasses your own. Furthermore. MY. Decisions. Are. FINAL!" He said each word slowly, to emphasize his superiority. He nodded towards Gwydion, his eyes flashing furiously.

Yami was starting to feel frantic by now. They were going to kill his Dwenny! And there was no way he could stop them. They were too powerful as a group. Yami looked pleadingly at Yugi for some help.

Yugi saw the worried look on Yami's face. He was worried too. Dwenny was his friend, and had saved his life not once, but twice. He had to do something.

Gwydion approached Dwenny slowly, shackles in his hands. He could sense that her magick was drained, so this should be quite easy. And fun too, he thought.

Dwenny made no motion to move or resist in any way. She had accepted her fate. She had done what needed to be done. Her only regret was that she would never be with Yami again. And that she had caused him so much pain. She wished she had seen it sooner, instead of waiting days to come to grips with her feelings. And now it was too late.

Yugi watched as Gwydion approached Dwenny, ready to put the shackles on her wrists. Then he thought of something, and his eyes lit up. "Wait!" he cried, running over to stand in between Dwenny and Gwydion, arms outstretched.

Noden looked at him curiously. "What is it, young one?"

"You can't kill Dwenny!"

"Of course we can. She broke our laws, betrayed her oath as a Seeker."

Yugi shook his head. "If you kill her, then you will have condemned this world to destruction!"

Everyone stared at him.

"What do you mean?" Noden asked suspiciously.

Yugi told him about the vision Yami and Dwenny had had earlier that day. "If Dwenny is the reincarnation of Sekhmet, then she is destined to be with Yami, and was brought to him for a purpose."

Noden and the Council didn't know anything about this ancient Egypt bit, and were intrigued. "Go on," Noden said.

Yugi hesitated. He really didn't know much about reincarnation or fate or destiny, so he was kinda winging it as he went along. "Well…since Sekhmet had sensed an evil force nearby, I'm guessing that she was there to help Yami fight it in the past. Therefore, Dwenny was sent here to Yami to help him fight it in the present." Yugi looked at the Council, hoping they would believe him.

Noden considered all of this. "We have felt a strong evil force in this world, but we've had no indication that some "spirit" was supposed to stop it." He looked at Yugi for an explanation.

"…" Yugi didn't have an answer for that one.

But Dwenny did.

"With all due respect, my Lord, your powers may be great, but there are limitations to them. Perhaps you were simply not meant to foresee this."

Gwydion could tell Noden's resolved was starting to weaken. Stupid brat had to butt in, he thought. No, he would not let Dwenny get out of this alive. "My Lord! She mocks your powers!" he said, hoping to raise his anger once more.

Noden sighed and shook his head. "No Gwydion, she's right. Perhaps I was not meant to see this. The boy may be right as well. Therefore, we cannot take any chances." He looked at Dwenny, his eyes narrowing. "Cerridwen. For now, we will allow you to live, so that you may help this Yami spirit. Find the evil, and stop it. But," he warned, raising a finger, "as soon as you are done, we will be back for you. We're not letting you get away with breaking the rules. And you are NOT to use dark magick," he added.

Dwenny nodded. "Thank you, my Lord. We WILL find Marik, and we WILL stop him." Whether it is with light or dark magick, she added silently to herself.

"Good then. It is settled. We bid you farewell, Cerridwen."

"But…but…but…" Gwydion sputtered, not believing what he just heard. NO! I will have my revenge…

"Come Gwydion," Noden said, "it's time to go." He looked at Dwenny. "We will be watching you." He raised his arms, and the five men disappeared in flash of blue.

Once the Council and Gwydion had left, Dwenny looked at Yugi, and smiled warmly. "Thank you Yugi. For all of your help." Her smile turned into a grin. "You actually convinced stubborn old Noden to change his mind. Amazing!"

Yugi smiled. Then his expression turned serious. "Do you think all that I said about fate and destiny is true?"

"Only one way to find out." Dwenny turned her gaze towards Yami. "We have to find out what happened in the past. Then we'll know if we are meant to fight the evil again."

***************************

The next day, classes passed by annoyingly slow for Yugi. He was anxious to get out of school already and go see Ishizu. Throughout the day, he could barely stay focused in class. His mind kept wandering back to Yami and ancient Egypt, thinking of the possibilities. What if he was wrong, and Sekhmet had been killed before she could help Yami? What if she and Yami had had a huge fight, and he had angrily sent her away? Or worse yet, killed her himself? Yugi shuddered a little at the thought. He prayed to whoever was listening to him that that wasn't the case. And if it was, then history would not repeat itself.

At last, his last class had ended, and Yugi dashed out of the room to meet Dwenny. She had skipped classes today because she didn't want to be seen with a huge bandage on her face, and be faced with questions of why it was there. Yugi waved to his friends as he passed them by. He had already convinced them last night that seeing Ishizu was something Yami, Dwenny, and he should do alone. He promised to fill them in right after they saw Ishizu. Yugi thought they were slowly starting to trust that Dwenny was not their enemy, but an ally.

Yugi saw Dwenny standing next to her car, arms folded across her chest. Even at this distance, he could tell she was slightly nervous. But he saw in her eyes a determination to go through with this, no matter what happens. Yugi felt a strange comfort in this, and it somewhat calmed his own nerves. He reached her car. "Well, I guess it's time," he said, still somewhat nervously.

Dwenny nodded. "Yes. Let's go, before we lose our nerves…" She gave a shaky smile.

Yugi nodded as he climbed into the passenger's seat, frowning as he did so. It seemed…odd not hearing the friendly panting of the little Doberman puppy behind him in the backseat. Yugi glanced at the backseat, and indeed Bestian was not there. Dwenny saw his glance, and her eyes hardened. "Bastards," was all she muttered to herself. When she went back to the guest room last night to check on Bestian, she had discovered that he was gone, a note in his place. The note said that the Council had taken him, a "safeguard" to make sure Dwenny didn't try anything stupid to get out of her punishment. If she did, then they would kill Bestian. And they think they are all good and light, Dwenny thought bitterly, with a shake of her head. With a sigh, she started up the engine and drove to the Domino Museum.

At the museum, Dwenny and Yugi paused at the bottom of the steps, looking up at the white marble structure before them. Dwenny felt the sudden urge to run away, but she hastily pushed the thought away. For Yami, she reminded herself as she started to head up the stairs.

They quickly reached the top and headed inside. There, they found a woman with dark shoulder length hair, wearing a long Egyptian-style dress waiting for them. "Hello," she said. "I've been waiting for you. My name is Ishizu Ishtar."

Yugi knew her Millennium Necklace must have "foreseen" them coming. "Then you know why we are here."

Ishizu nodded. "Yes. You've come seeking answers of the past, through the aid of my Millennium Necklace."

Dwenny sensed the power of the necklace. "Will you help us then?"

"Of course. I too am anxious to learn of the outcome of the ancient battle between the High Priest and the Pharaoh. However…" She looked at Dwenny curiously. "I am uncertain of your connection with all of this, and how you would be able to help."

"I had a …vision of Yami and I back in ancient Egypt. But it wasn't really me. Yami had called her Sekhmet, his sorceress."
Ishizu widened her eyes at this new information. "The stone tablets never told anything of the Pharaoh having a sorceress, nor did my Necklace indicate anything of the sort. How intriguing."

Dwenny nodded. "It is. And I think it's time we got some answers."

Dwenny drove them back to Yugi's place, where they agreed they would not be disturbed. They moved some furniture around in the living room, to clear some space. Yami appeared in his spirit form. Dwenny smiled slightly at him, while Ishizu bowed her head with a low "my Pharaoh." Yami nodded to them both. They all sat down in a circle, Ishizu across from Dwenny, and Yami across from Yugi. Dwenny took out a small crystal rock and placed it in the middle of their circle. "It's a quartz crystal," she explained when receiving strange looks from the others, "etched with the rune Perdhro on its side." She pointed to the symbol, which looked like a vertical line with a "V" attached the top, and an upside-down "V" attached to the bottom. "The quartz is used to focus your magick energies, and Perdhro is used to bring light on hidden secrets." She glanced at Yami as she said this, then shrugged. "I thought it might help."

Ishizu nodded. "We'll need the help. Now, open your minds and see into the past!" She cupped her hands in front of her necklace, and a bright light flooded the room, transporting the four back to ancient Egypt…
