Yuri: Hello one and all. If you're reading this then you probably like this story! Yay! Anways I must apologize for not updating YIB and Closer sooner. You see, both of them are very long chapters and they are both uncovering the plot right about now so it needs more details and time to write them so they don't turn out like crap. But I promise once I get them finished, I'll send them right over to my fabolous beta, Death By Storm, who also betas this story. Okay everyone?

Yugi: And without further delay...

Yami: Here is chapter 3!

...Ryou Bakura...

Confused amethyst eyes scanned the large classroom and then turned to the empty desk beside him. The owner smiled hopefully when the door opened, but found that it was only Malik and Ryou.

"Good morning Yugi-kun," Ryou said. His chocolate brown eyes were dimmer than usual and his voice cracked with a pitiful sadness. Yugi would have said something but he was more worried about another one of his friends.

"Morning Ryou," Yugi replied. A flash of concern crossed his face. Malik quirked an eyebrow at the worried expression.

"Is something wrong?" Malik asked.

He grabbed an empty chair and pulled it in front of Yugi. Ryou followed suit, even though it was clear that he wasn't paying much attention.

Yugi nodded sadly. "I don't know where Jou is. It's not like him not to come to school. I've tried calling him but he won't answer his phone. I'm so worried."

It was times like these that Yugi completely forgot about all of his own problems. His friends were his lifeline and to think that something happened to one of them… well he didn't think he'd be able to deal with it.

Malik watched as Ryou focused on the words that Yugi said and saw the concern in both of his friend's expressive eyes. "Don't worry you two. The dummy probably overslept. You know how he is," Malik said.

Yugi sighed and nodded reluctantly. "I guess…I just feel like something's wrong. I don't know. Maybe I'm just worrying too much," the smallest of the three said. He let his head rest on the desk below him.

Malik nudged the dazed boy next to him and asked for a small favor. After Ryou had left the room to gather some of Malik's books, the Egyptian turned towards Yugi and frowned.

"I found out why Ryou's been acting so weird lately," Malik whispered quietly and Yugi leaned in curiously. The blonde looked around to see if anyone was listening and then proclaimed with a disheartened voice: "Honda cheated on him."

Yugi clasped his small hands over his mouth as he struggled to quiet down his large gasp. "What?" Yugi said a little louder than he intended. Malik just nodded.

"No, no, not Ryou. Not again," Yugi waited for his friend to say that he was just kidding, but he knew better. "How many times does Ryou have to go through this? How many people are going to keep hurting him like this?"

Tears threatened to form in Yugi's eyes. Ryou had so much love to give and yet people just continued to abuse him because of his gentle nature.

Malik glared at the wall beside them. "All I know is that once I get my hands on that bastard then he's dead."

Yugi took a deep breath as he attempted to calm down his raw emotions. However they boiled over when he looked over Malik's head to see a familiar figure dressed in an overbearing hoodie that casted a large shadow over the pale face.

"Jou!" Yugi exclaimed drawing the attention from everyone else in class, including the blue-eyed brunet in the back. Jou winced at all the attention and scowled at the other students making them all turn back to what they were doing prior to Yugi's outburst.

Yugi pounced on the blonde and hugged him tightly, oblivious of the painful gasp that Jou released at the contact. "I was so worried about you. I thought something happened," Yugi said frantically.

Jou nodded and gently unclasped Yugi from his waist. "No Yugi. I'm fine. I just got into it with my old man again," the blonde said taking a seat very slowly and carefully. Neither Malik nor Yugi noticed this but there were a pair of blue eyes in the distance that did.

'He's lying,' a deep, unfamiliar voice said in Yugi's head. It almost made Yugi fall to the ground in surprise, and he quickly turned to Malik. "Did you say something?"

Malik furrowed his eyebrows at the question and shook his head. "No I didn't."

Yugi suddenly became very confused. 'Oh great, now I'm starting to hear voices,' Yugi said to himself sarcastically and then turned his attention back to Jou.

"Why don't you take your hood off?" Yugi asked casually and saw Jou visibly flinch.

"Um, I don't know Yug. He took a good swing at me. You sure you won't freak out if I take it off?" Jou asked cautiously and watched as Yugi nodded. Slowly, as if lifting his arms was extremely painful and arduous task, Jou untied his hood and pushed it back. Yugi let out a horrified gasp.

The bruise that graced Jou's cheek was black and blue and seemed to have indents in it. Even Malik was taken aback at the horrific sight.

Yugi quickly became frantic. "Oh my god, did you put ice on that! It won't heal fast enough without ice! That's the only one right? Are you hurt anywhere else?" Yugi rambled on worriedly as he attempted to search the rest of Jou's body. The blonde quickly, but gently pushed Yugi aside.

"Yug' I'm fine. It's worse than it looks. I'll be fine in a few days," Jou assured but the look on Yugi's face told him that it wasn't going to end there. "If it makes you feel any better, I'll go to the Nurse and get some ice," the honey-eyed boy said with a soft sigh. Yugi's face got a little brighter at the remark.

"Okay but can you please go now? And I want to know if she thinks that something is wrong with you," Yugi said seriously.

Jou nodded absently, knowing that he would do no such thing, and left the room without another word. He ignored the concerned gazes of his friends that pierced the back of his head.

"Do you think he's telling the truth?" Malik said quietly after Jou had left. Yugi shrugged his small shoulders in response.

"I guess. I mean why would Jou lie to us?" Yugi said.

"Do you think something else happened?" Malik asked curiously.

"I don't know," Yugi said sternly and then narrowed his eyes at the expression Malik gave him.

"I'm sorry Malik. I know you don't like my answers, but I honestly don't know. I don't have all the right answers," Yugi said a little too defensively. Malik scoffed at the remark.

"Figures," was all Malik said and Yugi narrowed his eyes even more.

There wasn't many times that Yugi broke out of his fake cheerful character in front of people besides his therapist, but every once in a while something would get to him. And right now it was Malik's attitude. At that moment, Ryou walked back into the room with a smile that would melt the coldest of soldiers into a puddle of drool. The expression almost knocked Malik out of his seat in fact. Yugi was also shocked by the sincere smile.

"What did you find?" Yugi asked when Ryou approached them. The only thing that could make Ryou smile like that was a great discovery of some kind.

Ryou smiled even brighter if that was possible and took out from behind his back a large golden ring with small sharp dangling shards around it with a familiar eye in the middle of it. The sun from the window shone off it brilliantly, amplifying its great beauty and unique shape. Both Malik and Yugi examined it with wide eyes.

"That has the same symbol as Yugi's puzzle,” Malik said.

'Thanks a lot, Captain Obvious,' Yugi said to himself sarcastically. He was still slightly ticked off at Malik's rudeness earlier but aloud just said: "Yes it does. Don't you have a rod that has the same eye as well?"

Malik shook his head. "Yes but it's not mine. It was my father's and I haven't seen it since he died. Probably down in the basement somewhere," Malik said not really seeing the importance.

Yugi nodded and then turned back to Ryou who was still smiling as if he was the luckiest person in the world. "It's very pretty, Ryou. Where'd you find something like that?"

Ryou tilted his head as he said: "Well, I decided to go for a little walk in the back to...clear my mind...and I just happened to see something shinning in the bushes. So I went to go check it out and Ta-Da!"

Yugi laughed slightly at his friend's antics. "Well, it certainly was a great find! Take good care of it.”

Ryou nodded. "You know I will. It's the greatest thing I've ever found!"

Yugi smiled once again. But this time it was a sad smile. It upset him that objects could make Ryou so happy like no person ever could. Yugi took a seat next to the window and watched as Malik and Ryou made their way into a casual conversation with the latter holding on to the golden item in his hand like it was his lifeline. All he could think about was if Jou was okay. Well, at least until he thought about the mysterious voice he had heard earlier. Was he really going crazy?

Meanwhile, Jou was walking towards the Nurse's office with his head hung and eyes unfocused. He wasn't thinking about tripping down stairs or walking into a wall. That didn't concern him. Nothing did. It came as a great surprise to him when he realized that he was only steps away from his destination still unharmed. It would have stayed that way to if at the very end he didn't collide into another person. The impact made Jou double over in pain as the bruises that littered his body came in contact with the solid being. The person watching Jou hold his stomach in pain raised a suspicious eyebrow.

"What the hell happened to you?" the icy voice spat. Jou cursed at his luck. He forced himself to look up at the scrutinizing gaze and gave to best scowl he could under the current circumstances. Jou decided that it was best not to respond and instead made a grab for the doorknob that would lead him into the Nurse's office. However, it appeared that Kaiba had different plans in mind when he grabbed Jou's wrist making the blonde yelp out in pain and surprise.

Ignoring Jou's protests, Kaiba examined the deep bruise on the other's wrist. The imprints on fingers could be easily identified. If Jou didn't know better he would have sworn that he saw a flash of anger in those emotionless blue orbs.

"Katsuya," Kaiba said in such a deadly tone that Jou's mind went blank instantly and all he could focus on was Kaiba's words. "What happened?"

Jou's momentary paralysis subsided and fury coursed throughout his body. "Oh, I'm Katsuya now," Jou spat bitterly. "Whatever happened to 'dog' or 'mutt'?"

Kaiba's face remained the same as he replied: "No you still are. But that's not the point. What happened to you?"

"Why do you care!?" Jou growled in his throat as he violently snatched his wrist out of Kaiba’s grasp.

Honestly, Jou didn't know why he was getting so angry. He should be happy that Kaiba showed concern for his wellbeing. But part of him wanted to blame Kaiba for what happened to him. Maybe if Kaiba hadn't come back then he wouldn't have been so preoccupied and would have noticed the gang of thugs before he was right in front of them. Or better yet, maybe if Kaiba had been there...

Kaiba's eyes instantly hardened. "I don't," the brunet said sternly.

Jou ignored the stab of pain that ripped at his heart at the statement. “Good.”

Jou escaped into the Nurse's office and slammed the door a little harder then he should have. The people already inside gave him curious glances. The blonde made his way over to an empty room after telling one of the Nurses that he wasn't feeling well and needed to sleep. Shutting the door quietly, Jou slowly laid down on the small bed and curled up into a ball. He held his knees close to his chest as he cried.

...

'Another day gone,' Yugi thought with a small sigh when he entered his bedroom. He quickly took off the blue jacket he was wearing. He also slid off his matching pants as he searched his room for his pajamas. It was now 9 o'clock. After school, all of his friends had gone straight home. He hadn't even seen Jou after their encounter this morning. Yugi had been a bit worried, but after a small phone call, Jou assured him that he was home and doing fine. Yugi had eaten a small dinner and had done his homework without any problems. After a few TV shows and a refreshing shower, Yugi was ready to crash. Today had worn him out for some reason.

Lying down on his bed, he stared at the white ceiling above him and exhaled another depressed sigh. His gut twisted angrily. He felt as if something bad was going to happen and he didn't know what. Part of him felt as if something bad had already happened, but another part told him that there was worse to come. Yugi shifted uncomfortably and growled at the hardness of his pillow. Turning around to sit up on his elbows, Yugi dug underneath his pillow and pulled out the object of his discomfort.

His black journal still had the pen from yesterday in it. Yugi opened it to see Jou's name, followed by a sentence or two on the white page. Without even realizing it, Yugi lifted the pen out of the crease in between the pages and began to scribble down words underneath yesterday's entry.

Ryou Bakura
You have too much. Spending all your time…collecting and discovering. It's not enough and no matter how you try, you never find the one you want.

Yugi sighed as he replaced the pen in the journal and closed it. Slowly, Yugi drifted off into a deep sleep, unaware of the events that were to take place only two days later...
