...Malik Istar...

"Jounouchi-kun," Yugi said sadly. He lightly tapped the boy's shoulder. The blonde turned to face Yugi with an obvious forced smile and the smaller youth hated that. The bruise on his cheek looked a lot better than the previous day; however, it was still not pretty to look at.

"What's wrong? You've barely said a word all day," Yugi said, worried by his friend's odd behavior. Jou always talked. Always. It was his outlet.

Jou shrugged. "Nothing Yugi. Just tired,"

Yugi sighed, but nevertheless, just nodded his head. In all honesty, he was beginning to become stressed. With each passing day it seemed like something new was wrong with either one of his friends or himself. And it was never a good thing when Yugi’s life became too stressful.

“Yugi-kun! Jounouchi-kun!”

The two said boys looked up and smiled when they saw Ryou in walking up to them. The bright smile that Ryou wore on his face was beautiful and seemed to lighten the entire atmosphere of the small and stuffy classroom. Yugi instantly noticed that the item that Ryou discovered yesterday was now hanging around his neck by a thin, gold chain.

“Hello Ryou-kun. I’m glad you are in a good mood today,” Yugi said.

Ryou smiled even more and then looked over at Jou. Immediately, the snow-white haired boy clasped his hands over his gaping mouth “Jou! What happened?!”

Ryou was obviously referring to the bruise gracing Jou’s face. Jou waved the other boy off. “Ryou, I’m fine. It looks a lot worse than it is.”

Ryou did not look satisfied with the response but decided that it was best not to push it, which Jou was extremely grateful for. The classroom door opened and the three friends looked over to see the fourth member of their group walk in with his head down so that the blonde bangs created an overcast on his face, shielding his eyes from the bright, annoying lights that the school insisted on installing.

“What’s wrong with Malik?” Jou asked. He watched the said boy take a seat in the corner.

Ryou looked over to the sulking blonde and frowned. “I’m not sure. He seems to be really down today.”

‘It’s probably because his built up emotions are starting to get to him,’ Yugi said to himself.

Yugi sighed. It appeared that all of his friends dealt with their issues in different ways. Jou talks to ignore the problems in his life, Ryou collects things to fill up the void in his, and Malik just wants answers to his problems which frankly no one can give him. And him? Yugi unconsciously rubbed a finger over the scars on his wrist. Well he had his own way. Yugi turned and looked over at Malik’s form. A sad smile made its appearance on his perfectly round face.

“Why? Is someone refusing to answer his questions again?” Jou said. He remembered the last time Malik was this angry. Jou almost wanted to laugh but decided that the action could be perceived as though he didn’t care about his friend’s feelings, which was certainly not the case. Yugi frowned at the remark and thought about what Jou had just said.

That was the way Malik had always been; ever since the night of December 12th of last year. That was the night when Malik’s world was turned upside down. Christmas was right around the corner and Malik and his sister, Ishizu, were walking home from a day of present hunting. It was dark and the streets were quiet. Something was bound to happen. It was inevitable when Malik and Ishizu were confronted with a cynical gang who thought it would be amusing to point a gun at the two siblings and let them chose which one would live and which one would die.

Malik was never one to go down without a fight though and at some point during the ruthless struggle, the gun went off and the gang members scattered, leaving a beaten Malik to crawl over to his sister’s lifeless corpse and rock her back and forth as he pleaded with her not to leave him.

His pleas went unanswered.

Ever since that night, Malik had always felt the need to ask questions and when he didn't get answers, it made him furious. But Yugi knew that this was just an an excuse for Malik. An excuse for him to show his feelings. In all reality, Malik wanted to ask only one question. And that question was 'why?' Why did the events of December 12th ever occur? However, he knew that Malik was aware that that was one question of his that would never be answered. And so the blonde settled for asking irrelevant questions instead, while subconsciously searching for an answer to why what happened did happen.

But something worried Yugi. Since that night, Malik rarely showed his emotions and Yugi knew that Malik was angry. Angry about what happened. Angry that life had treated him so unfairly. And Yugi knew, maybe better than anyone, that if Malik continued to let his emotions build up inside of him…then he was going to explode. ‘Everyone needs an outlet,’ Yugi thought. And the small youth had a feeling that just asking questions was not going to cut it for that much longer.

Jou was walking through the hallways unaware of where exactly he was heading to. The last few days had been a complete blur to him. Nothing seemed real anymore. Words didn’t make sense and people were nothing but fuzzy visions. He knew he should be in a class but he didn’t know which one and frankly he didn’t care. After a few minutes, Jou realized that he had stopped walking and looked up when he felt someone watching him.

Jou sighed and gently ran his fingers through his golden blonde hair pushing his bangs out of his face so that his eyes locked with Kaiba’s. "Shouldn't you be off somewhere frightening small children?" Jou inquired with a small smile. It was obvious that he was trying to convince everyone, including himself, that he was fine.

"Katsuya,” Kaiba said. “If you don't tell me what happened then I swear I'll-“

“Why do you want to know so badly?” Jou said, anger boiling up in his heart.

Kaiba didn’t answer but instead narrowed his sapphire orbs. “Who hurt you?” he asked in a voice that said ‘if you answer me with another question again then I will personally dig your grave myself.’

Jou remained silent and stared at the floor beneath them with sad eyes.

“How can I help you if you don't talk to me?!" Kaiba shouted, making Jou jump

Jou met Kaiba’s piercing gaze "Help me?! If you wanted to help me then you would have never came back! We were all doing perfectly fine without you!"

Anyone that had heard Jou’s tone would have realized that the blonde sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than Kaiba of the statement that escaped from his lips. Kaiba took notice of it immediately and raised an eyebrow. For a few moments, they were both silent.

"Would you prefer if I left again?” Kaiba said.

Jou hesitated and that was all Kaiba needed.

"I came back because I had left something behind,” Kaiba said nonchalantly. “Something important to me.”

Jou scoffed and said with a slight roll of his eyes: "Well, I hope you find it.”

Kaiba smirked but it wasn’t one of his usual smug ones. No, instead it was a very…scary smirk. Protective and scary.

“I will.” He said it confidently, as if there was no room left for discussion, and no way that he would fail. “But first, I must find the person who had the audacity to touch something that belongs to me.”

If Jou wasn’t so thick, he might have realized what Kaiba was talking about. He might have realized that somewhere inside of Kaiba’s sapphire eyes, he knew.

“Well have fun with that. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have somewhere to be,” Jou said bitterly.

Kaiba didn’t respond but instead just moved to the side and watched as Jou walked past him and disappear into the boy’s bathroom.

...

“Hey Yugi. You want to walk home together? Ryou left already and I don’t feel like walking by myself right now,” Malik said with a hopeful look in his eyes.

Yugi smiled as he closed his locker. “Of course, Malik.”

Yugi was happy that Malik had seemed in a better mood than he did earlier and the walk home was very peaceful. Well, at least it was until Malik began to burden him with questions that Yugi didn’t know the answers to. Yugi knew it was just going to go downhill from here.

"Why is Jou acting so strange?" Malik pondered aloud and turned to Yugi as if waiting for him to answer.

"I don't know. I just hope he's okay," Yugi said with a small smile as they continued walking down the street.

"And Ryou? He seems really happy lately," Malik said. Yugi nodded in response.

"It's probably because of that item he found. I can't be sure though," Yugi replied with a small shrug.

"And what about you?" Malik said causing Yugi to stop in his tracks.

"What about me?" Yugi asked in an unfamiliar, sharp tone.

Malik stopped as well and was now gazing curiously at the smaller boy. "Well, you've been acting kind of weird for the last few weeks. Anything wrong?"

Yugi shook his head. "No, I'm fine," he said reassuringly.

"Are you sure?" Malik pressed on.

Okay, now Yugi was just starting to get annoyed. "Yes Malik-kun, I'm sure."

"Positive?"

Yugi narrowed his eyes. He didn't like it when people tried to pry into his life. His therapist was doing enough of that as it was. The last thing he needed was Malik flooding him with pointless questions.

"Positive," Yugi said through clenched teeth and a forced smile.

Malik nodded and began walking again much to Yugi's relief. However, just as Yugi thought that he had escaped Malik's incessant questions, the tan teen had started up once again but this time Yugi had had enough.

"Do you know-"

“I don't know!" Yugi said shoving his hands up towards Malik's face so that the Egyptian could see his palms. "I don't have all the answers in my hands Malik! I don't have any answers!"

“Not the answer that you’re searching for..." Yugi said, softening his voice.

Malik grabbed Yugi’s outreached hands and brought them together so that Yugi’s hands formed a small bowl.

“No,” Malik said in a tone that made Yugi’s heart drop. All of his previous impatience with the platinum haired boy vanished into the wind that blew through their hair and Yugi looked up to meet the other's disheartened expression. “You don’t Yugi. No one does,” Malik said. He let Yugi’s hands go with a deep sigh.

“See ya tomorrow,” Malik said indifferently and then walked off, taking long strides down the sidewalk. Yugi reached out and opened his mouth to say something, anything, but nothing came out. Instead he stared after Malik’s retreating form with saddened eyes. He hadn’t meant to do that! Oh god, he was so stupid! How could he say that!

Yugi didn’t move, even after Malik had disappeared into the busy streets.

...

The sun began to set in the distance causing streaks of deep purple and luscious pink to strike across the sky, turning the clouds beautiful shades of vibrant colors. Nightfall was approaching and the busy bustle of the day cleared as silence began to fill the streets of the small city. With the season of winter on the horizon, a thin chill brushed against a moving figure's cheeks, freezing the tears on his tan face.

Confining his hands to the warmth of his pants pocket, Malik quickened his pace so that he could avoid the oncoming bitter frost of the night. It didn’t take long for his house to come into view and soon enough, Malik was fumbling with his house keys with cold fingers. He eventually stuck the thin key into the small hole and turned the doorknob only to meet darkness. Flicking on the light switch and shutting the door behind him, Malik let his blue jacket fall to the floor and with a sad sigh.

“I’m home.”

No response…

Not that Malik was expecting one. This house had been unbearably silent since December 12th but it was still nice to pretend. His eyes turned towards the direction of the TV, but then quickly faltered. There was never anything good on anyway. With his gaze turned towards the floor Malik realized that he had begun to walk and when he looked up, his eyes met with the basement door.

Malik unconsciously opened the door which made a loud creaking sound. Curiosity boiling within him, Malik leaned over to see if he could see anything in the darkened room. Something in his gut told him to turn back. To just close the door and go to bed. However, it felt as if there was a rope tied around his waist, forcing him into the dark basement and before he knew it, he was down the stairs.

Malik glanced around the dusty room. He hadn’t been down here in forever and now that he was, he wasn’t exactly sure what he was looking for. Boxes of clothes and forgotten memories piled up in the corner of the extremely small room, and before he could think better of it and turn back, a small glint in the shadows caught his eye. The Egyptian realized it immediately to be the object that Yugi had brought up the prior day and instinctively reached out for it. The electricity that flowed through his body the moment that his skin came in contact with the hard surface was enticing, and, after getting it firmly in his grasp, Malik pulled the golden item to him and examined it with interested eyes.

It was a long skinny rod with a golden ball at one end that was decorated with the same Egyptian eye that Ryou and Yugi’s items had. With a small smile, Malik dug the sharp end of the rod through the belt hole in his pants so that the object was lying securely at his side. ‘Well, at least, he left something for me,’ Malik said to himself as he walked back up the basement stairs with each one groaning under his weight. Once upstairs, Malik walked over to his bedroom and, before switching off the lights, he scanned the room with his eyes for any signs of life.

Nope. Just him.

Malik sighed and then turned off the lights before lying down on his bed and preparing for another long night of nightmares.

Yugi’s sleeping form laid sprawled out on his bed face down. Besides his head laid his black journal that was opened to a page with multiple entries in it. The pen that he had written with was still entwined in his fingers and the reminiscence of tears could be seen on his soft cheeks.

In his journal were the names of the boys who he had come to know and love as brothers. Written under the current date was a new addition that read:

Malik Istar

Turn out the lights and what are you left with? Open up my hands and find that they're empty...

It wasn’t much but Yugi didn’t know what else to say. In fact, he never knew what to say when it came to Malik.
