Chapter 1: Bad Beginnings
Jhatu led the way to the temple as two young boys followed closely staring at the new surroundings curiously. Neither of the boys had ever been away from the palace or the temple of Ra so this was different for them ,but their curiosity soon left them when Jhatu began speaking, "You two better get accustomed to this place, you'll be staying her for the entire summer."
"Why do we have to stay here?" Yami asked, "This place is for girls. I doubt there's any other boys for miles around."
Seto agreed, "Yea, why do we have to waste our summer here?" He folded his arms across his chest stubbornly and his cobalt eyes glared at Jhatu with a twinge of dislike.
"Because," Jhatu sighed heavily, "You two need to see more of Egypt and plus your fathers would like it if you tried to associate with the opposite gender more."
Seto snorted, "You mean girls, I'd rather die."
Jhatu chuckled at the boys ignorance, "I'd thought you'd be past the point of thinking girls had cooties." He waited for them to catch up to him on the way up the stairs to the temple.
"He is," Yami countered a little out of breathe, "We just don't like girls. They're nothing but trouble."
"Who said that?" Jhatu questioned as they arrived at the temple's entrance.
"My father." Yami replied coolly.
"Ah, good!" A cheery voice said from behind them. All three guys turned around to see a young woman walking up to them, "I'm Bethany. Glad to see you've arrived safely."
Jhatu bowed respectfully, "These are the two boys that will be staying here for three months."
Bethany smiled at Seto and Yami than turned her attention to Jhatu, "Please come inside, there's something I must discuss with you." She pulled Jhatu inside the temple gently before turning her attention back to Seto and Yami, "You two can just hang out outside, I must speak with Jhatu about something."
Yami and Seto walked down the steps and sat down at the bottom. The sun blazed over head as the boys just sat in awkward silence.
"Hello!" a young girl popped out of nowhere scaring Yami half to death, "I'm Ankara! Are you two the flea infested primates that are going to stay here for a little bit?" She gazed at them with light purple eyes and her black pigtails bounced as she talked.
Seto looked at her with little interest, "You should watch your mouth."
Ankara stared up at him innocently, "What'd I do?" she huffed at him.
"Who told you we were flea infested primates?" Yami questioned regaining his composure.
Ankara giggled childishly, "Saria and Kure. They say all boys are infested with fleas." She poked Seto's head, "But you don't look like you have any fleas." she seemed slightly disappointed.
"That's because we don't!" Seto snapped.
Yami rolled his eyes at his friend, "She's little, she doesn't know any better."
Seto frowned, "Well she should!" He didn't like kids much and prayed to Ra everyday that he wouldn't ever have any and much less ever have to get married.
Ankara than focused on Yami, "How does your hair stick up like that?" she pulled one of his spikes which caused him to cry out in pain, "Are you by any chance related to porcupines, Spiky?"
Seto grabbed her hand and released the grip she had on Yami's spiky hair, "His name's Yami and you should treat your elders better."
The girl's eyes widened, "But Saria and Kure said that boys are stupid and don't deserve respect."
Seto kneeled down so he was at eye level with Ankara, "Well you tell Saria and Kure that they're the dumb ones, okay?"
"Oh, so we're dumb is it?" a girl said flatly behind them
Yami and Seto looked over their shoulders to see who was talking and they saw two girls around their age with their hands on their hips, furrowing their brows with dislike.
"Who are you two?" Yami inquired.
"Who do you think?" The black haired girl asked, "I'm Kure and she's," Kure pointed to the blonde girl that was standing a few inches to her left, "She's Saria."
Ankara rushed past Seto and Yami and latched onto Kure's leg, "She says that boys are idiots and should be locked up so us girls don't catch their stupidity." Ankara smiled.
Yami frowned, "Girls are the ones who are dumb…"
"What was that?" Saria commented, "I don't think I heard you, you'll have to speak louder."
It was obvious that she was teasing him.
Kure glared at her friend slightly, "It's not nice to tease, you of all people should know that." She then got a familiar glint in her eye that made Saria smirk. Kure was planning something, she stepped forward and bowed, "I apologize for my rude friend. But perhaps…" she trailed off, little tears formed in her eyes.
"What's wrong?" Yami asked.
Kure began sniffing and Saria tried to comfort her, "My cat Rajeh, is stuck up in a tree…" Kure sobbed faintly., "I was wondering if it wouldn't be too much of a burden, if you could…help get her down. I'm not too good at climbing trees."
Seto rolled his eyes, "You want us to help get your idiotic cat out of a tree. It's the cats own fault it got stuck up there in the first place!"
Yami, however, was concerned, "Show us where the tree is."
Kure nodded as she led Yami and Seto to a tree. Since it was summer, the tree's leaves were green and clumped very closely together, it was hard to see even the first branch.
Saria pointed up into the tree, "Rajeh went pretty high up, you think you could reach her?"
Yami studied the tree, "We'll…Seto and I will try."
Seto groaned, "You're dragging me into this…"
Kure let out a loud sob, "Please get my cat down, I don't know what I'd do without her…"
"Could you give us a boost to the first branch?" Yami asked.
Saria and Kure nodded and got in front of the tree. They then grabbed each other's hands and crouched down, Yami than stepped as gingerly as he could onto the girls arms and they raised their arms up until he was able to grab onto the first branch (which was about eight feet off the ground), and then he flung his leg over and was sitting on it.
"Your turn Seto!" Saria beckoned Seto.
While they were lifting him to the first branch Kure muttered, "Somebody needs to loose a few pounds…"
"Shaddup!" Seto barked when he was safely on the first branch of the tree.
"So how far up is your cat?" Yami questioned Kure.
"I don't know," Kure replied, "She's a really good climber so she's probably really high up there."
Yami and Seto began climbing the tree which was no easy task, they searched every branch ,but could not find the cat.
Then they heard Kure and Saria giggling below.
Yami and Seto poked their heads out of the tree and saw the girls playing with a ginger cat which was obviously the cat they were looking for, Rajeh. They were also accompanied by Ankara who was laughing her head off.
Kure looked up at them, "I guess she wasn't in the tree then." She grinned.
Yami realized they had been tricked, "You knew she wasn't in the tree didn't you? You just wanted to play us as fools!"
"You two will pay once we get down from here!" Seto yelled at them.
"Yea, right," Kure added, "If you can get down."
Both boys froze and examined the tree, the climb up had been difficult so the climb down must be…extremely difficult. They had noticed how far apart the branches were on their way up and both gulped as they stared down.
Saria bit the inside of her cheek to keep herself from cracking up at how stupid Seto and Yami looked in the tree.
"Rajeh isn't stupid, she knows better than to climb trees," Kure said gleefully, "Boys however…are stupid enough to climb up into trees though.
"Damn you two!" Seto yelled, "This isn't funny!"
Ankara cocked her head at him and smiled, "Yes it is."
Seto and Yami watched helplessly as Kure picked up her cat and walked away with Saria and Ankara.
"This sucks," Yami mumbled, "Those two are really asking for it."
Seto agreed, "Girls, why in Ra's name do they exist?"
Yami shrugged, "We'll think about that later, for now, let's focus on getting down from this tree."
Seto sighed, "Yea, you're right and we should also tell Jhatu about this then maybe he'll let us go home."
The boys however didn't know that this was only the beginning of what was in store for them…
~*~*~Middle of the Night~*~*~
It was around the middle of the night and Yami and Seto were still stuck up in the tree. They had given up getting down hours ago and were both frustrated by the two girls who had tricked them into climbing up the stupid tree in the first place.
"This would have never happened if we didn't have to come here," Yami muttered under his breath, "I just hope someone comes along soon."
Seto sighed and placed his chin on his hand gloomily, "Where's Jhatu when you need him?"
Both boys were bored half to death waiting up in the tree for Jhatu or anyone else to help them down. A part of each boy felt like cowards since they were too afraid to climb down the tree.
"Maybe if we're really careful," Yami said, "We'll get down safely, staying up here isn't helping."
Both boys eyes looked at the tree branches which they could hardly see in the dark.
"If we're 'really' careful you mean," Seto replied hastily, "It's so dark we can barely see."
Yami rolled his eyes and whispered, "Cowardly priest…"
"I'm not!" countered Seto glaring at Yami angrily, "This is dangerous, the branches are so far apart and we can hardly see."
"Sissy…" Yami hissed.
"Fine," Seto mumbled below his breath, "Just don't fall."
"Same goes for you too Seto," Yami retorted coolly.
The boys both carefully made their descent down the tree, being careful not to slip and fall to an early death. Both were secretly plotting ways to get back at the girls.
"They are so going to pay for this," Seto murmured to Yami.
"I'm telling Jhatu about this," Yami stated as he scaled down the tree, watching out for jagged edges of the branched that he might accidentally step on.
Seto shook his head, "We don't need his help, we're going to get those girls on our own. They'll think us wimps if we tell an adult."
They stayed quiet after that until they reached the second to last branch, both panting, tired after the descent down the tree.
"That wasn't so bad," Yami panted.
"Speak for yourself Yami," Seto scowled.
They get up to make it down the last two branches ,but Yami's foot got caught in a small ridge in the tree branch and he slipped and fell down grabbing onto Seto by accident. Both boys fell to the ground with a thud.
Seto sat up holding his head, "Smooth move dumb ass."
Yami stayed on the ground, "My foot get stuck, it's not my fault!"
"Whatever you say," Seto stood up smoothing out his robes and waited impatiently for Yami to stand up.
When Yami got to his feet both boys walked slowly to the temple of Bastet without speaking to each other.
Jhatu greeted them furiously, "Where have you two been?"
"It's a long story Jhatu," Yami yawned, "Can we jus get to bed right now?"
Jhatu eyes him angrily than showed them to their chambers were the two slept like a log unaware of the rude awakening that they were going to get the next day…
