Last Time:

Bakura's expression turned sad. He said nothing, and Kesi shifted slightly, not liking the awkward tension in the air. She sighed. "Forget it. Sorry I asked."

"It's a long story.."

"In case you haven't noticed, I've got all the time in the world right now."

---------------

Bakura's eyes were shaded, and Kesi was slightly afraid. Neither of them spoke for some time, until Bakura opened his mouth. "It was a long time ago. My family was extremely poor, and I had to steal to get food for them."

-----

"Mama? When's dinner?"

The young woman sighed, bowing her head, trying to stop the tears. "I'm sorry, Bakura-chan."

Bakura sighed. He was used to it. "It's fine. I might be able to get something from my friends."

He always said that. Every night, there was never any dinner, and Bakura would say the same thing. He was going out to get food from his rich friends. In reality, he had no friends. Everyone looked down upon poor people, and being a child, he still didn't understand.

"Alright. Come back when it's dark."

Bakura gave his poor mother a hug and ran out into the approaching night. Some stars were already seen, but he always came back when it was pitch black. Running swiftly and silently into the alleyways of Egypt, he came upon an abandoned cart, still stocked with bread and fruit. Curious to whom might still have their cart out at this time of night, he slipped closer.

A pale hand darted out of the shadows and snatched a piece of bread. Waiting a while, he soon snatched another piece and then there was a yell. "Thief! Get `im!"

The chibi gasped and ran, fearing for his life. Behind him were the hoofbeats of horses, no doubt guards, quickly gaining on them. A tear rolled down his cheek. `I don't want to die! Ra help me!' He ran faster; at his limit now. The horses were still gaining on him.

Giving up his hope of escape, he dashed into the shadows. The team of horses thundered by, followed by angry yells of the cart owner. He had no idea how long he'd stayed there, but it was soon pitch black. Bakura shoved the stolen goods under his shirt and ran, with only the energy of the adrenaline still pumping in his veins to help him.

He reached his house. Everything was ablaze. He stopped, staring wide-eyed, and then let out a scream as a hand clasped down roughly on his back. "What are you doing here, boy?"

He turned around to meet a guard. "I was wondering what all the fire was, and I rushed here to help save them."

The guard smiled evilly, a grin that sent shivers down the small child's back. He seemed to accept that, and seemed to not notice the abnormally large bulge in the child's stomach. "They deserved it. Filthy thieves. We're looking for a boy about your height. Have you seen anyone?"

"No.. I'm sorry."

"Right then, carry on."

-----

Bakura sighed. "After that I became a thief, stealing to live." His mood darkened. "And one day I'll have revenge on that bastard of a pharaoh."

"Pharaoh..?"

"He killed them!"

"I'm sorry."

"I don't want your pity, woman."

She smiled, and turned away. "Fine."

"I'm going to sleep. You better have food ready."

"Where are we supposed to find food?"

"Look under the wooden floorboard in that corner." He gestured, and then yawned.

"What..?"

Bakura was already asleep. Kesi raised her eyebrow, and shook her head. Looking up, she discovered it was dark. Sighing, she went to the said floorboard and examined it. It looked normal.. She grabbed the pipe and poked at it, and then in one fluid motion, she slammed it down. It still didn't move.

`What the..' Her eyes widened when she saw a small hole on the corner. She put her finger through and pulled experimentally. The floorboard pulled upwards to reveal a small opening. `Okay then.. That was wierd..' She looked down. It was dark.

Glancing back at the dying lantern, she decided it was better than nothing, and grabbed it, going back to the tunnel. Shining the light down, she discovered stairs. `I guess Bakura was right.' She slid, just barely fitting through the foot-wide gap. Kesi felt frightened. It was dark, smelly, and damp.

She sighed. Maybe it led out of here. Then she could go get someone to arrest Bakura. After all, he had killed countless innocent people for his own survival. Kesi shook her head, and concentrated. There was a light at the end of the tunnel. Outside? No. It was dark. Then what..?

She came down the final steps and stepped cautiously into the doorway. It was so small; she nearly had to duck. The first thing she noticed was that it was cold. The second thing she saw there both shocked and amazed her.
