Last Time:
Bakura glared at her, but did as he was told. Kesi got the rest of the bandages and started unwrapping his wound. It was surprisingly healed mostly; the blood had deceived the actual healing process. Kesi wet a cloth and started cleaning.
---------------
The moons rose and fell and the sun chased blindly after it. Day turned into night, and night into day. Soon a month had passed, although to Bakura and Kesi it seemed like an eternity. A month had passed, and the so-called `relationship' between the two had grown. Trust had manifested its way into their lives, and soon Kesi began wondering when she would leave. Not like she really wanted to, though.
She would just go back to her old, uneventful, predictable life. Washing dishes, scrubbing floors, and polishing jewelry. She.. Well, to be brutally honest, she liked it here. No chores, no forced suitors, no.. No responsibilities.
Kesi had her own little house now. The shed, despite it being classified as a shed, wasn't nearly as small as one would make it out to be. With the crates, half of them smashed open, pushed against the wall, a couple in the middle to serve as a stool and the secret room downstairs, they had more than enough to survive forever.
And, there was Bakura. She sighed; perhaps out of happiness or longing, maybe a bit of both; she wasn't sure. The worn cloth paused in it's cleaning, the puppeteer caught up in her own private fantasies. Bakura.. Well, she wasn't going to admit the truth to anyone, but you can never lie to yourself. And her thoughts were safe in her head... right? `Fine.. I love him.'
A voice chuckled cruelly in her head. `I knew it.' She spun around, and saw no one. Bakura was in the hidden room, probably sleeping. `Surprised, little one? You should be. And you're scared, too.' Kesi spun around, shaking her head.
"Who are you?" she asked out loud, a painful, weak question.
Shifting. A movement inside her head. It felt like she was dizzy, but the room wasn't spinning. She was feeling sick, but didn't feel the need to vomit. She was scared, but she felt safe. Kesi grabbed her head. `Tell me who you ARE!' Another cruel chuckle, and then the answer. `No.'
Kesi felt the same sensation again, and gripped her head, the long since forgotten cloth dropping to the wooden floor. Bakura then chose that particular moment to stumble, sleep-drugged, up the stairs. His brown eyes were small slits, and his snow-white hair was in disarray around his pale face.
"Wha' the hell is going on?" he asked, the words slurring together.
He sounded drunk. There was a good chance he was, too. That secret room had everything. Including a liquor cabinet. Kesi had discovered it one day while cleaning. Bakura stumbled over to Kesi, and pulled her to her feet, and Kesi saw that he wasn't actually drunk, it was probably just sleep-induced. She shook her head, feeling no more sensations, but the taunting laughter still echoed in her mind.
Suddenly, without warning, Bakura's head whipped to the other side of the shed, behind Kesi. He motioned for her to be silent, and she complied, although question and worry were evident in her eyes. Then she heard it.
"Why would he think it's this shed, of all things?" Rough Arabic sounded outside the shed, where Bakura's chocolate gaze was directed.
Bakura clamped his hand over Kesi's mouth and slid back towards the wall, Kesi didn't object. He slid behind two crates that were conveniently placed, leaving a foot gap between the wall and the crate. Kesi's back hit Bakura's chest, and he wrapped his arm protectively around her stomach, his left hand still around her mouth.
Kesi shuddered at his hands touching her body, but had no time to enjoy it as the door was suddenly busted open. Footsteps sounded, and an order was given. "Search the place! Leave nothing untouched!"
Guards trooped into the large haven, made quite small by the considerable amount of them. Bakura removed his hand from Kesi's mouth and groped for his dagger, slim fingers closing around the jeweled hilt. Kesi let out a silent whimper and instinctively snuggled closer to Bakura, who didn't seem to mind. She drew her knees up to her chest and Bakura readied his knife.
It seemed like three lifetimes had past as they sat, huddled in that corner. The soldiers turned over all the crates, searching for clues, but for some reason they never came where they were. Kesi thanked the gods once their noisy footsteps disappeared.
Kesi just sat there, breathing heavily, while Bakura pocketed his knife. She was still half-scared, but part of her wanted to stay in his arms. Her dream was shattered when Bakura shifted against her, and she was forced to get up.
"Shit. Now they know about this shed."
Kesi gave him a funny look. "So.. Why is that bad? They've searched the shed, now they won't search it again."
Bakura gave her a sharp glare of his own. "You don't know the Pharaoh's soldiers like I do. They've never seen this shed. I've been up close and personal with them." He shuddered. "Too close."
Kesi didn't know what to say, so she said nothing. Bakura glanced up through the little hole in the ceiling and saw that it was night. He yawned. "Ugh. No wonder I'm so tired."
"..You just woke up."
"Nyah.. whatever.."
Kesi followed him down the stairs and watched as he collapsed into the bed - which she usually slept in. She walked over to where Bakura was lying, eyes half closed. "Where do I sleep?"
"In here." He muttered.
"..Eh?"
"It's a huge bed. Now shut up and get to sleep."
Kesi frowned, and then walked around the bed. Bakura was occupying less than half the huge bed. She slipped in gingerly, clothes still on. She usually slept naked, but there was no way she was taking off her clothes. She closed her eyes, and soon her breathing evened. She slept.
Bakura's POV
I can't get to sleep, no matter how hard I try. That's fine, tonight I'll leave. The door's open, my wounds are healed, only faded scars remain. But.. It's not fair. I feel so frustrated, so angry, and there's no one to blame but myself.
I have to leave.
Now? Yes. I have to. If I fall asleep by some miracle, I won't wake until morning. Kesi will be fine here.. Won't she..? Yeah. She's fine. I heard her breathing, and every so often I hear a soft snore escape her lips. Cute.
I sighed. Does she think I don't notice? The way she smiles at me, only me, and the way she hums and dancing slightly when she's cleaning. The way she blushes when I'm too forward with something, the way she glares at me. Fuck it, everything about her is beautiful.
That's why I have to leave. If they find Kesi here, which they won't as long as she stays down here, the room is hidden, and then it'll be no problem. They'll ask her if she's seen me, she might say no, she might say yes, and then they'll dismiss her and send her back home where she can continue without me.
My pale fingers went towards the pendant around my neck. Maybe I'll give it to her. Then she can sell it or something. I lifted it off my neck and looked at it. It was beautiful, a black opal surrounded by real gold, a whole border of it. Expensive leather attached it around my neck and threaded through a small hole between the border and opal. I always kept it hidden in my shirt after I found it in that tomb.
Faintly I smiled. Marik and I had robbed that tomb together. Maybe I'll go visit him. Yeah. He has a nice house now. Okay. I silently slipped out of the bed and walked over to Kesi. She looked even more beautiful when she sleeps. Hehe. She snores.
I turned to go, when I stopped, and looked back at Kesi. Now she has something to remember me by.. What the hell? Remember me by? Where the fuck did that come from? I'm growing soft.. That's okay. As soon as I leave her, the feelings will leave too, right..?
I walked over to her, and did something I knew for sure that I would eventually regret. My lips met her forehead, and she sighed in her sleep. Her body shook, and I thought I had woken up again when she sighed happily and fell back down the cliff of slumber.
I walked away without a backwards glance, and ascended up the stairs.
Goodbye, Kesi.
