Last Time:

I walked over to her, and did something I knew for sure that I would eventually regret. My lips met her forehead, and she sighed in her sleep. Her body shook, and I thought I had woken up again when she sighed happily and fell back down the cliff of slumber.

I walked away without a backward glance, and ascended up the stairs.

Goodbye, Kesi.

---------------

Kesi opened her eyes to see Bakura lying beside her. She smiled softly and brushed a tuft of hair out of his pale face. He sighed happily and leaned into her gentle touch. Kesi giggled quietly, purposely trying not to wake him. `You could never tell he was the King of Thieves now..' she thought, studying his peaceful face; his eyes closed softly and quiet, barely audible snores sounded.

His eyes opened, brown meeting blue, and she smiled. "Morning love." He said, yawning slightly.

"Morning."

He smiled back at her and snaked a hand around her waist. "So," he said suggestively, "What do you want to do today..?"

His hand went lower and she squeaked. "I don't know."

"Hm.."

He placed two fingers on her chin and lifted it up, so she was looking into his eyes. What she saw there shocked her. Pure, unconditional love. For her..? He brought his face closer to her and she blushed. He laughed quietly at her embarrassment and cupped her cheek in his hand.

"I love you, Kesi."

His lips moved closer to hers and she closed her eyes, waiting for his kiss.

-----

It never came. She opened her eyes, and saw the ceiling above her. Kesi shot up and looked around. "Bakura?"

`Maybe he's upstairs..' She walked upstairs, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. Kesi stopped when she got to the top of the steps. "..Bakura? Are you - "

Her eyes fell on the open doorway and she fell to her knees with a dull `thump'. The sunlight chased the shadows across her face as tears came to her eyes. `Did the guards find him? He.. He was caught?' She bowed her head and then her head suddenly snapped back up as it touched a cold piece of jewelry. `I don't wear necklaces..'

Her hand went to around her neck and she gasped slightly as she felt something smooth and round. Kesi dashed over to the broken mirror in the corner, caused by the guard's rude intrusion. Around her neck was a black pendant; a stunning black opal surrounded by a rim of gold. Soft, expensive-looking leather threaded through a small gap between the border and the opal.

`It's.. Did Bakura do this? That means he wasn't captured!' A sudden bolt of happiness ran through her before she dropped back into sadness. `He left.. He left me.' She shook her head. `Don't be stupid. He's not going to stay. He's a thief.'

Kesi got up and peered out the door. White light flooded her senses, and she closed her eyes, pain jolting through her view. She waited a couple of seconds and opened her eyes, holding onto the doorframe for fear of losing her balance.

She smiled at the familiar view. It was a lush forest, surprising in Egypt, but it was thriving and plentiful. Exotic fruits were scattered on the ground, and growing in the trees. She could have sworn it was magical. Kesi tucked the necklace into her shirt, not wanting to reveal that a peasant could have such an expensive piece of jewelry.

As soon as she left the forest, she immediately regretted it, as the hot sand pierced through her bare feet. Kesi easily mingled through the crowd, and started on her way. She didn't know where she was going, but she wanted to find Bakura. As much as she hated him for being a thief, she also.. Felt something else for him.

Kesi was jerked out of her thoughts by a shrill voice of a woman. "Help! Thief! Thief!"

Her hand immediately flew to her neck, and she abruptly turned on her heel to leave. However, a soldier was blocking her way, she found out. Kesi bumped into the soldier and fell backward, landing on her bottom. She winced, and then looked up at the glaring soldier.

"Young lady, you really should pay more attention."

Kesi sighed with relief. "I'm sorry sir."

"Move along, then."

Kesi got up to leave, dusting her outfit off. She was just about to head off when a hand grabbed hers and yanked her backwards. She was met with the alcohol-smelling, glaring guard. He reached for her neck and held the pendant between his gloved index finger and thumb.

"Just where did you get this?"
