Chapter Four: The Prom
Next day, Sharlene was late for the school assembly. As she walked into the classroom, she saw all the girls were cheering and laughing, and the boys were gossiping too. That's something Sharlene didn't see often.
"Tristan, what's new?" Sharlene caught the sight of him.
"Oh, there will be a prom two weeks from now. And you know what the twist part is? The girls are supposed to ask the guys to the prom!" Tristan smiled.
"Wow! There's going to be a Prom! Girls ask guys? It's so cool!" Sharlene was thrilled to hear that. `I wonder whether I can ask Yugi or not.' Sharlene giggled, she felt she just drunk a pot full of honey.
"Hi, Sharlene!"
"Hey, Joey. Did you here it? There is gonna to be a prom! Isn't that good?" "Well, oh, whatever." Sharlene felt something was right with Joey, so she dragged him outside.
"What's the matter, Joey, you don't look too good. You know, you look like a panda!" Sharlene pointed at her own face and teased.
"Ah... Really? I look like a panda?" Joey jumped up and down and tried to find somewhere he can see his own image.
"Just kidding, you look…alright. What? You didn't have a good night sleep?" Sharlene asked.
"Well, I lost the note you give to me, and I couldn't find it anywhere!" said Joey dreadfully.
"That's your story? It's just Mai's phone number; I'll get you another one." Sharlene smiled.
"So, what are you gonna to do when you get her number?" Sharlene asked.
"Well… I…don't actually know." Joey stroke his chin and thinking.
Sharlene folded her elbows. `Sometimes, he is just such a Moron! I'd better push him a bit."
"Joey, I can give you the phone number only if you…" Sharlene stopped right there.
"Only if what?"
"If you ask her to the prom!"
"Errr…Do I have to?" Joey blushed.
Sharlene rolled her eyes. "Joey, you are unbelievable!"
"Yeah, I know I am." Joey took that as a compliment.
Sharlene pretended to leave him.
"Hey, Sharlene, don't go." Joey caught her arm.
"What? Joey? If you aren't going to tell her about your feelings, I will!" Sharlene threatened.
"Ah…" Joey's mouth opened.
Sharlene smiled. She saw Yugi and Tèa walked into the classroom together.
"Hey, Tristan."
"Hey, Yugi, hi, Tèa! Did you guys see Sharlene and Joey?"
"Yeah, they are outside, talking and laughing, they seem got pretty close." Tèa admitted.
"Oh, yeah. I saw Sharlene kissed Joey yesterday!" Tristan lowered his voice.
"Really?" Yugi was dazed.
"You can't be serious!" Tèa uttered.
"It's true! I saw them!" Tristan winked.
"Wow, sounds like Joey's got himself a girl friend, I thought he likes Mia. Seems like I was wrong." Tèa was happy, and she felt lighter too.
"Even Joey's a bit…They'll make a good couple, right? Yugi?" Tèa asked cheerfully.
"Ah?" Yugi, actually Yami was more shocked to hear the newsflash.
`So, it's true that she likes Joey.' Said Yami.
`Yeah, I couldn't believe that, it seems a bit too fast.' Said Yugi.
`We saw them too, yesterday.' Yami added, he sounded a bit sad. `Yugi?'
`Yeah, what is it, Yami?' `Ah, nothing.' Yami sighed.
"Hey, Yugi, are you ok?"
"Yeah, man. What's wrong?" Tèa and Tristan asked; they saw Yugi was a little introverted.
"Oh, I was just talking to Yami; he seems a bit down, lately." Yugi explained to them.
"Hey, Yugi…You wanna got to the prom with me?" Tèa blushed; she was tense that was something she didn't do everyday.
"Yeah, sure!" Yugi thought that may cheer Yami up a bit.
"Great! We are going together; Sharlene's going with Joey and Tristan… Who are you going with? Has anyone asked you yet?" Tèa asked.
"Well, I was wondering whether I can ask, ask…" Tristan went red in the face; he seemed was afraid to say her name.
"Ask who? Mm, let me guess, Serenity?" Tèa wanted to make fun of him. Tristan giggled.
"I will take that as yes then." Tèa laughed.
"Take what as a yes?" Sharlene walked in with Joey.
"Hey, Sharlene! Heard about the prom?" Tèa asked.
"Yeah, it's going to be so cool!" Sharlene's eyes went wider.
"Yeah, you bet! I'm going with Yugi, and you are going with Joey?"
Sharlene felt she just been thrown into the hell when she heard that, but she managed to keep her cool, she tried to be happy for Tèa.
"You are going with Yugi, that's great!" Sharlene faked a big smile, god know how much she hurt inside. "Oh, I am not going with Joey, he's got a secret date!" Sharlene added.
Now everyone looked at Joey. "He...Hee..." Joey scratched his head but he said nothing.
"So, Sharlene you and Joey aren't…?"
"You guys think we are dating?" Sharlene and Joey looked at each other, and then they burst out laughing. Tèa and Tristan were embarrassed, but Yugi felt rather relived. `Sharlene and Joey are just friends after all.' Yami smiled.
"Sharlene, who are you going to the prom with then?" Tèa asked.
"Err…" Sharlene haven't thought about that.
"Don't you worry, Tèa! Look at Sharlene, even though the girls are supposed to ask the guys to the prom, I'm sure there will be people who come and ask her!" Joey said confidently. "Thank you, Joey!" Sharlene meant it, Joey's always there cheering her up.
"Well, I may just go by myself." Although Sharlene's smiling, but everyone can hear the dreadfulness in her voice. Hearing all that, Yugi was a bit regret that he would be going to the prom with Tèa.
"Well, there is one guy I can ask." Sharlene chuckled.
"Who?" Everyone's eyes were on her.
"Seto Kaiba!"
Tèa's jaw dropped, it was big enough to fit a soccer ball, Tristan looked at Sharlene as if he just saw an alien, Joey fell on the ground, and Yugi was completely dazed.
Sharlene giggled.
"Hey, guys, I'm just joking! From what I know, he is in America right now, isn't he?"
"Wow, I though I was going to have a heart attack for a minute." Joey got up from the floor. "Phew…" Everyone was relaxed.
"Do you guys have a thing against him or what?" Sharlene asked.
"Well, not really." Tèa replied.
"Hehh, he is an arrogant selfish self absorb freak!" Joey sure didn't want to hear his name. `Well, looks like I'm not the only one who thinks him like that.' Thought Sharlene.
"Well, Sharlene, I think that we all think he is the right one for you." Yugi explained. Sharlene gave her an `is-that-so' look. `Yugi, didn't you mean you think not anyone else thinks? Silly thought Sharlene!' she chuckled.
"What are you thinking now? Shar? Don't trick us again like that, I can't take it any more." Joey put his hand about his forehead and pretend that he was going to faint.
Sharlene shrugged her shoulder and made a face at him.
"Hey, Tristan, why don't you go to the prom with Sharlene?" Asked Joey.
"Err…" Tristan was having a dilemma.
"I think Tristan is already occupied!" Sharlene said cleverly.
"Yeah, that's true!" Tristan blushed.
"Wow, who's the girl?" Joey was interested.
"Err…" Tristan wouldn't really want to tell him. `He may rip my skin off if he knew that I'm going to ask Serenity!' Tristan had a horrible picture in his mind.
"Hey, Joey you kept yours secret, and so should Tristan!" Sharlene came to the rescue, she winked at Tristan.
"Yeah, true, Sharlene is right." Tristan laughed.
"All right, all right. We will just wait and see!" Joey gave up.
"Hey, guys, why don't you go to my house at the day of the Prom, we can have a pre-prom party!" Sharlene asked excitedly.
"Well, sound good to me!" Said Joey.
"Yeah cool! I'll come."
"Awesome idea, count me in."
"Thank you guys!" Sharlene gave them a sweet smile.
"Hey, I got another idea!" She added.
"Now what? Invite Seto Kaiba to the party?" Joey teased.
Sharlene glared at him and then clutched his neck, then shook him from side to side.
"Help! Can't breath!"
"Now, you know me!" Sharlene let go of him.
"Well, now I know how evil you can be!" Joey muttered.
"What's that I'm hearing? Joey?"
"Nothing! Your majesty!" Joey replied. "She's like a naught sister!'
"Joey, Yugi, I am challenging you two to a duel!" Sharlene said pretty seriously.
"You? Really? When?" Joey held his neck and asked.
"At the party, if any of you guys win, I will give you my rarest card." Sharlene added.
"Ok, I accept." Said Joey.
"You, Yugi?" Sharlene looked at him hastily.
"I do accept that. But, what if any one of us lost?" Yugi asked.
"Well…" Sharlene gazed at everyone with malevolence.
"Well…what?" Joey was short of patients.
"Well, then you guys have promise that to be my friends until the end of the time." Sharlene said with a smile. Everyone laughed too.
After the school, on the way home, Yugi caught up with Sharlene.
"Hey, Sharlene, why did you challenge us for nothing?" Yugi asked.
"What do you mean?" Sharlene pretend that she didn't know what Yugi was going on about. "Well, you said, if you win the duels, we'll have to be your friends until the end of the time. But, we are already very good friends, don't you think it's a bit…"
"A bit odd, isn't it?" Sharlene glanced at him.
"Well, Yugi, I don't know, I just want to duel you guys, I mean I didn't have too much time to duel before, now I want to enjoy it. And I do love having friends like you guys." Sharlene said sincerely and then she added. "I love the game, but my grandpa doesn't like it. Even though I have the money and all that stuff, but grandpa forbids me to held a tournament. That's just so awkward; I mean I'm not even spending his money!"
"Wow…" Yugi knew that she was well-off, but he never though she was that wealthy.
"I'm going to travel around the whole world and challenge every duellist I met one day." Sharlene said in a lofty and determined tone.
"Hey, that's an awesome idea, count me in!" Yugi liked the sound of it.
Sharlene turned to him and smiled.
"And after that, I'm going to stay in Egypt and fulfil my parents' last will." Sharlene added.
"You parents' last will?" Yugi asked.
"Yeah, they were great archaeologist and they died when I was a little baby! I grew up with my grandpa Lord Sinclair. Well, he is very nice too me but, he hates my father." Sharlene sounded like she was telling someone else's pitiful story.
"Hey, you wanna come over and check out the new stuff we got in the shop?" Yugi invited. It hurt to see Sharlene feeling downhearted.
"Ok, why not? I like your grandpa's shop; I mean it doesn't feel like a shop…"
Sharlene and Yugi talked merrily… The sun slowly went down; the whole city was painted by a warm nice golden colour, the wind blew gently through the city, the moon had already raised on the other side of the sky. A peace night had yet to come!
