Ch.2: Memories
It was a bright sunny afternoon and everyone is at the park. Seto and Atem had their duel disks out and were ready for face off.
“LET'S DUEL!” They said.
“There they go again.” Duke said taking a sip of her soda.
Seto is taller than Tristan with brunette hair, cobalt blue eyes, and a white sleeveless trechcoat over a black outfit.
Duke has long black hair that was tied to a pony tail, cat-like emerald eyes with a black line going down the right eye, and has a dice earring dangling the right ear.
-Yugi's POV-
Seto and Atem have been dueling against each other since we were in our freshmen year. Back then, Seto was corrupt jerk and Joey didn't like him at all. In fact, a lot of strange things happened during our freshmen and sophomore years.
The first thing was Pegasus's strange invitation to his duelist island. He took my grandpa's soul straight from the television screen! It was to force Atem to go over there and compete. When he finally got face-to-face with the creator of Duel Monsters himself, the guy used his Millennium eye, which is a gold sphere that occupies his left eye, and used some spell to isolate my lungs. While I tried to breathe, my soul felt like tearing in half. Atem was dueling for time on this one and had to beat Pegasus in order to get my grandpa's, Seto's, and Moukaba's souls back and get rid of this curse that's slowly killing me! He was getting beat bad and I was down on the rail, gasping. My friends, except Marik, Malik, and Duke because we didn't meet them till later, were around me and tried to cheer him on at the same time. Just before he was about to give up, I shouted to not give up, no matter what! I was able to hold on until the end of the duel when he won! I woke up about three hours after that experience, and noticed that Atem was holding me, and fast asleep. I looked around and noticed that everyone, including Seto and Moukaba, was looking at me and was completely relieved that I was alright. We were in a helicopter heading home. Than there was the Battle City Tournament, where we met Malik who was fast friends with Ryou. Marik, boy…if I could tell you how he was then… He was beyond insane than. He was hitting on Malik, but she didn't want anything to do with him. How insane was he? Oh, I don't know, how about nearly killing everyone and trying to take over the world!? Luckily, Atem knocked some sense into him… Okay, more like a lot of sense, but Malik came around to liking him and set him straight… well, as straight as one could get with an insane maniac.
-Normal POV-
“I now summon the three god monsters!” Atem called placing three cards down. “Slifer, Obelisk, and Ra!” Three huge monsters appeared behind him. By that time they created a crowd, who were completely awestruck. “Game over Kaiba.” He said as the three monsters attacked Seto directly and soon the holograms disappeared, leaving the crowd cheering.
Seto rolled his eyes as he joined up with the group.
“That was great!” Joey said.
“You're just saying that to make me feel better.” Seto said.
“Well, that's half of it.” Joey smirked.
“Get a room!” Lisa said as she played with Moukaba's long black hair.
Atem came up and sat down next to Yugi.
“So, what now?” Ryou asked.
Joey's stomach growled. “Lunchtime!”
Everyone groaned.
“Can't you think with your head for once!?” Bakura said.
“Hey! I'm hungry!”
“We just had a huge breakfast just two damn hours ago!” Marik said.
“Don't you take that tone with my puppy!” Seto said.
Everyone who wasn't arguing sweat dropped.
“Here we go again.” Moukaba said with a sigh.
“How does ice cream sound?” Yugi said, changing the subject.
Atem raised his hand. “Not paying!” He said.
“Not paying!” Yugi, Malik, Ryou, Joey, Lisa, and Moukaba said.
“Not paying!” Marik and Bakura said, leaving Seto glaring.
“Fine! I'm paying, again!”
“Hey, we're not multi-millionaires here.” Malik said as she spit her gum out and landed in the trash can. “Man I'm good!”
“Ice cream it is than.” Atem said patting Yugi on the shoulder. “Great idea Aibou.”
-Yugi's POV-
Aibou… meaning partner in my language and one of my many nick names. He started calling me that when he transferred to my elementary school just two days after we met.
His dad drove me to my grandpa's shop, where he was about to call the police. He and Papa Aki quickly got along and I showed Atem everywhere around the shop. I remembered it as clear as a glass of water.
^Flashback: 8 years ago^
“Oh wow!” Atem, eight and a half almost nine years old, said as he looked at the many board games at the main part of the shop.
“Yugi!” Grandpa said as he ran up to embrace me. “Thank god you're alright!”
I felt guilty making my grandpa worry like this. “I'm sorry Grandpa.” I said.
Grandpa took a good look at me before looking at Atem and his dad. “Thank you for bringing her back safely.”
“Not a problem Mr. Mouto.” Papa Aki said. “I'm Professor Akhenamkhanem Misoka and this is my son, Atem.” Papa Aki said. “He's the one you should thank.”
“Well thank you very much.” Grandpa said with a bow. “Is there anything I could do to repay you?”
“Can we play `Clue'?” Atem asked, his eyes sparkling.
Papa Aki chuckled. “My son has a great fascination with games.” He said, earning a sticking-out-tongue from Atem.
Grandpa laughed. “Of course! We haven't had anyone to play against in a long time.”
I was timid with the idea at first, but after I got dried and put on dry clothes, we all sat down on the table and played `Clue' for about thirty minutes when Atem won.
“Can we play again? Or play another game?”
“I think it's time to head back son.”
“Why?”
“We have to head back to the funeral and find out about your mother's will.”
“Your wife passed away?” Grandpa asked.
“Cancer.” Papa Aki said as my grandpa nodded.
My grandmother, who I didn't know besides my parents, died from cancer.
“Yeah,” Atem started to say. “But, Mom wouldn't want either of us to gloom about her death!”
At that moment, he surprised me. I never had met anyone who could think positive about the death of someone.
“I know, but we could come by here again, if it's alright to you?” Papa Aki asked as he looked at Grandpa.
“Of course!” Grandpa said happily. “Come by as much as you like!”
Atem cheered and looked at me with those excited eyes. “I guess I'll see you around, maybe tomorrow!” He said to me mostly.
“Looks like he found a new place to hang out.” Papa Aki joked.
“Mind if I asked you something?” Grandpa asked.
“Of course Mr. Mouto.”
“Solomon, please. You're accent sounds Egyptian…”
“Yeah! We moved here from Cairo!” Atem said before Papa Aki said anything.
“Really?” Grandpa sounded interested.
“It was my wife's idea; she wanted to come here before she passed on. We were at her funeral when `someone' decided to leave the crowd.” He eyed Atem.
“I saw Yugi! And she was alone!” Atem tired to defend himself.
“I know, I know.” Papa Aki said with a laugh, which made Atem pout.
Just before they left, Atem gave me a hug, which I didn't expect and said that we'll meet again.
When I came back to school from the weekend, Anzu and the girls went up and started poking me, behind the teacher's back, and whispered mean things about me.
“Class, class!” The teacher said while clapping her hands, which made all the kids go to their desks; I sit in the back where I could be invisible. “Today we have a new student in our class…”
`A new student?' I thought.
“Who is all the way from Cairo, Egypt, Atem Misoka.”
I was shocked and happy at that while he entered and caused a huge commotion in the class, mostly the girls. He looked around and spotted me.
“Now Atem, where should I put you?”
“May I sit in back?” He asked, which surprised everyone including me.
“Well, alright, there is a free seat in front of Yugi.”
I looked at the empty seat in front seat and gulped for whatever reason.
“Hey Yugi.” He whispered as he sat down. “I told you that we'll meet again.” He added with a wink before facing the class for our daily lesson.
It was at recess when the girls cornered me when he started to call me aibou.
“Leave my Aibou alone!” He shouted as the girls turned to look at him. He practically bull-dozed them to shield me.
“Aibou?” Anzu said, and I knew the tone well. “Why would you want a shrimpy, weak, small, scaredy-cat like-“ She was about to continue when Atem started to hit her in the mouth, which knocked her to the ground.
“Don't you ever talk about my friend like that!” He shouted while he kicked dirt at her before walking away with me and went into an empty classroom with games in it.
Ever since then, Anzu never picked on me when he's around.
He got in trouble afterward when Papa Aki heard about it. “I know it's wrong to hit a girl!” He explained when we got to the game shop, because Papa Aki was going to work an hour later and asked Grandpa to pick us up. “But she was picking on Yugi and she was calling her names like shrimp and weak! She deserved it!”
Papa Aki sighed and nodded. “I understand what you did was what you thought was right-“
“Yeah! You always told me… `Never turn your back on what you believe is right'!”
Papa Aki sighed with a smile on his face. “I did tell you that, didn't I?”
While they talked, Grandpa bent down to my level. “I think Atem is one of those friends you can count on till the end.” He whispered.
I admit, I was afraid of being alone, but being hurt was the worse. But Atem proved to me that there is someone out there that won't betray you. Just before they left, I gave him a hug, which he returned without hesitation. That hug was the beginning of our friendship.
^End of Flashback^
-Normal POV-
“Man that was good!” Joey said licking her lips.
“Should be, you nearly ate everyone else's!” Malik said with a small glare.
“So, sue me!” Joey replied.
“I would have if Atem didn't beat me.” Marik said.
“Oh don't you start that!” Malik said, in a very serious warning tone.
“I'm just saying…” Marik said.
“You nearly killed her!” Atem said.
“Yeah, but if I didn't do that, Kaiba would've never figured out his feelings.”
That made the CEO blush.
“As if you cared if she was alive or dead at the time.” Bakura blankly pointed out.
“Oh shut the hell up!” Marik said.
“Make me.” Bakura said, which shortly started a fight between the two.
-Yugi's POV-
It took forever for Seto to see his feelings for Joey. Even though her stomach is a black hole and doesn't gain a pound, she's funny and loveable at the same time. Back at Battle City, we were in the semi-finals and Joey was up against Marik, when he was in his crazed insane self and used some `shadow magic' to put a curse on her, which almost killed her if it wasn't for her strong will.
Atem and I headed to her room to see her, before Atem's duel against Seto. We saw him beside her and confessed everything. We had to quickly hide ourselves because he was exiting the room. When he turned the corner, we went into her room and saw an improvement on the screens. I stayed with Joey along with the others while Atem went up to the battle tower to face Seto. I don't think I've missed any of his challenges except that one, and when I looked out into the porthole, I saw the intensity of the duel and wished I was there to witness it. Than Joey woke up and was in full recovery and said we had to get up there and see what was going on. But the truth was that she wanted to Seto how she felt, but I didn't blame her. When we did get up there, the duel was over with Atem being the victor. He was glad that Joey was alright, but she ran pass him and head straight on to Seto and slapped him in the face.
“What, may I ask, was that for?” Seto said, hiding his hurt well.
“That's for being a cold hearted bastard for all these years!” Joey replied loudly, than kissed him, and it was a long one.
When she was done, we had to hold in out laughs at the dumbstruck site of Seto's face. “And that's how I respond to your question, Dragon.” That was his nick name since he kept calling her puppy.
Than it was time for the finals between Atem and Marik. I was scared, knowing what that maniac almost done to Joey. We were all there as the two got on the platform and started the duel. Marik, who had the Millennium Rod at the time, which would become a dagger, unleashed the dark magic and I blacked out for only a second. I opened my eyes and saw that I was chained by shadow magic.
“Yugi!” Atem called and I had to look down.
I was in mid-air and on his side of the field.
“What the hell!?” Malik said, in the same predicament that I was but only on Marik's side.
Marik warned Atem to be careful, but didn't mention of what.
When Atem gave Marik damage to his life points, I would've cheered if it wasn't for Malik's agonizing scream as her legs started to disappear. I was scared and so was Atem. As it turns out, if either gets damage, we start to disappear into nothing and if either of them were to lose, we'll cease to exist! It was very tough for Atem, he didn't want to lose any of us, but with Marik's insane magic at work, he had to think of a way. Than out of the no where, Malik had figured out how to use the shadow magic and switched places with Marik, giving Atem a chance at winning.
When that was over, I regained the disappeared parts of my body and landed on the platform. We went over to see if Malik was okay and found Marik, uncautious on the floor. We took him a long and headed home. As it turns out, Marik, though insane, was actually a good guy, once he dealed with Malik's wrath. Since then, they'd been together, despite their sanity rates.
-Normal POV-
“See ya at school!” Joey said as each group went their separate ways.
“See ya!” Yugi responded as she and Atem headed to an apartment building.
It was one of the nicer ones as they headed to one door. Atem fished through his pockets till he found a key and opened the door. The apartment was a fair size and is usually covered with books.
“Sorry about he mess.” Atem said with a sheepish smile.
Yugi shook her head. “It's okay.” She entered the room and dusted off one of the books.
“It'll be just a minute.” Atem said as he entered a room with a computer, while Yugi sat down and took out a notebook and read through before looking up at one picture that was on one of the book shelves. The picture was her, Atem, Papa Aki, and Grandpa around the piano.
-Yugi's POV-
That picture was taken about five months before Papa Aki died. We were at Atem's recital, taking piano for sometime and enjoyed it. He would practice a song that we liked and I would sing along while he practiced and still kept going, even if he did mess up.
^Flashback^
The recital day was his first day and he was playing a hard piece. He was good with an audience, but he didn't start playing and looked at me. His teacher asked what's wrong and, after a few seconds, asked me to come up. I did and sat down next to him, while he started to play the opening.
“I like you to sing.” He whispered.
I was about to ask why, but the vocal part was close and I did as he wanted me to. The song was called `My Immortal' by Evanescence.
Everyone cheered when we finished the song. It was when we walked back to our seats is when I asked him. “Why did you want me to sing?” I whispered.
He looked at me with a smile. “You have a great voice and it's easier to play when you do.” He responded.
Five months have passed and we just made friends with Joey and Tristan when the office called Atem up.
“Probably another college that wants me to go.” He said as he left the room. “See ya at the roof.”
We did wait on the roof at lunch, but he was late, which concerned me since I knew he would never be late for anything. When he did show up, the site he was in made me confuse, since he was rarely sad and depressed, but somehow, deep down, it was something terrible.
“Joey, Tristan, I'm sorry,” He started to say. “But I would like to talk to Yugi alone.” His voice sounded shaky, which made me worry.
Joey and Tristan, seeing him like this, left the roof top, leaving me and Atem.
He walked to the fence that surrounded the rooftop and took a shaky breath before he spoke. “He died.”
I didn't understand him until he continued.
“My father is dead!” He banged his fist on the fence, making it rattle.
I couldn't believe it. `Papa Aki… dead?' I thought as I walked up to him. I didn't realize I started to cry until he wiped away a tear, which made me cry to his chest.
None of us spoke for nearly a week before the funeral. When the day did arrive, it was raining and only me, my grandpa, and Atem were there.
Grandpa asked if we would like to go home, Atem wanted to stay and I stayed as well as Grandpa headed to the car. It seemed like forever when we stood there.
“You didn't have to stay.” Atem said finally.
“I wanted to.” I said.
“How come?”
“Because, he was also a Father to me.”
For the first time since we got here he looked at me.
“You know I never knew my parents and your father was the only person, besides my grandpa, that I could relate to as a Father.” I said but I felt s though it didn't make sense at all.
He hugged me, just like that, and cried for the first time since he heard the news.
^End of Flashback^
-Normal POV-
“Yugi… Earth to Yugi Mouto!” Atem said waving a hand in front of her face.
“Huh?”
“You were completely blanked out for a good five minutes.”
“Oh.”
“And don't worry, I didn't look through your notebook.”
She looked down at her opened notebook and blushed.
“Almost done with it?”
“Huh?”
“The poem epic thing you've been working on, `Dream', was it?”
“Oh, yeah.”
“Is everything alright?” Atem asked.
“Yeah, just… remembering Papa Aki.”
He smiled softly as he sat down next to her. “Yugi.” He poked her on the side, which made her jerk. “Aibou.” He did it again, this time it almost made her laugh. “Hikairi.”
“Quit it!” She said, nearly giggling.
“Chibi Tenshi!” He pounced on her, tickling her sides while she laughed crazily. “There.” He said getting off of her.
Yugi wiped a few tears from her eyes and tried to settle her giggle fits. “You're mean!”
“Made you laugh, didn't I?” He said with a smirk as he dodged an in coming pillow. “Oh its going to be like that, is it?” He had that smirking predator face as he grabbed a pillow as they started to run around the apartment with the book-made maze.

`Everything carries me
Irresistibly to you, like the wind
Everything connects me
Irresistibly to you, I feel it
Like the day returning after night
And it's always sunny after rain
Like a bird returning to its nest
That with my love, I go too
Everything carries me
Irresistibly to you, in that instant
Everything connects me
Irresistibly to you, I feel it
Like the sea hitting the rocks
Obstinately without ever ceasing
By misfortune we are always hitting
But love alone can save us
Like pleasure after tears
After winter returns the flower weather
At the moment where we believe that all has died
Love returns with a great victory
Everything carries me
Irresistibly to you, like the wind
Everything connects me
Irresistibly to you, I feel it.'
