Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ The Shadow of the Past; The Light of the Future ❯ Curse or Fate? ( Chapter 5 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Hey all!

Atem: I thought you were going to ground yourself for getting an `F' in Algebra 2?

Yes, but I have a plan that's already in action.

Atem: Burning down the school?

NO!! I'm going to do work on this fic during the weekends!

Atem: Oh… better than my plan.

Why are you here anyway?

Atem: My aibou is on this hikiri trip with the others and I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of maniacs.

Well… you do have a point there.

Atem: I always do.

… I'll start the fic.

Atem: You do that.

Chapter 5: Curse or Fate?
The sun shone brightly in the sky, making the sand unbearably hot. Yugi managed to rip her pants and made shoes for her bare feet. She wiped the sweat off her brow and continued to walk into the scorching desert. After hours of walking into the intense heat, she collapsed onto the scorched heated sands. `Where am I? Why am I here?' She thought as she closed her eyes.

The next time she woke up, she looked at what looked like a tent. She slowly got up and looked at the area a little better.

“I see you're awake.” Said a man, who just came in.

-Yugi's POV-
I looked over at the man, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. He looked exactly like an Egyptian guard! `No way!' I thought. `This as to be a dream!'

“You alright?” Asked the guard. “You almost didn't make it.”

“Oh, yes, thank you.” I said.

“The gods must be favoring you to be found in such a state.”

I nodded understandingly. “It seems they're merciful to wanderers.” I said.

“Maybe so.” He said as he exited the tent. “Need anything?”

I shook my head. “No thank you.”

He nodded and exited.

“How's the girl?” Another man's voice whispered.

“She's fine. She recovered quickly.”

“Does she remember what happened?”

“I don't believe so sir.” The second man sighed. “This looks like the job only the priests could do.”

“Agreed.”

I was so confused. `What happened? Did I do something?'

“But we wouldn't have known she was there if the god didn't appear.”

`A god?'

“I'm not sure if it's a god, but it did seem powerful.”

And that was the end of the conversation as they walked away.

`A god?' I thought as I laid back down onto the mat and slept. `I'm going to thank Atem for teaching me Egyptian.' I thought.

The next time I woke up, there was shouts and screams. I bolted up and exited the tent, only to see a huge monster. `What on Earth?!' I thought as I looked over at the guards.

“Protect the tomb!” One guard shouted at the other.

`Tomb?” I thought as I took a good look at the area and realized that I was in the Valley of the Kings! I felt someone grab my arm.

“Come on! It's not safe here!” The guard I met earlier said as he dragged me.

We didn't go far though, as that monster slammed its fist into the ground. The monster was pale in color all over, its face looked like those statues of the gods, and its tail, at the end, held a head of a snake. Anyway, when its fist slammed the ground, it caused an explosion, which made the guard let go of my arm and went to separate directions.

When I fell, I quickly looked around at what was going on. The monster was killing the guards one by one. That's when I heard laughter. `I recognize that laugh!' I thought as I turned to see Bakura. But he was different from the Bakura I knew… very different. Physically the same, but personality… Let me put it this way. He has gold items around him, probably him, probably stolen, his hands were covered in blood, and he was dragging a mummy. I didn't know what to do as I sat there, hidden behind the rocks, while everyone was fighting for their lives; I felt weak and helpless.

“Get your hands off the Pharaoh Akhenamkhanen!” The guard shouted.

I recognized the name, it was the same as Papa Aki's! I looked at the mummy that `Bakura' was dragging. At that moment, I got up and climbed to where he was standing. `Even though I'm in Ancient Egypt, Papa Aki is still the same. He shouldn't be treated this way!' I thought as I got onto the ledge where I saw Bakura, who was distracted by his amusement of the guards agonizing screams. I tried to be quiet as I snuck up, but he caught me and smirked.

“Trying to be a savior?” He said as the monster appeared.

I froze on the spot as I saw the blank black eyes staring at me.

“Release the Pharaoh this instant!” A guard, mortally wounded, said. These guards were very loyal to their kings, even though they passed on.

“You've become a nuisance.” `Bakura' said. “Might as well finish you off.” The monster's fist rose way up in the air, and was ready to strike.

I charged at `Bakura' and rammed into his side.

Since he was at the edge, he started to fall, but I grabbed one of the wrapping strips in his hand and it ripped, thus leaving me with the mummy, and the monster quickly caught him.

I looked at the open tunnel and took a wild guess that it was this mummy's resting place.

“Watch out!” The guard said as the monster reappeared with a ticked off `Bakura' on its shoulder.

`Bakura' smirked maniaticlly. “Diabound…” He said as he pointed to me. “Get rid of her.” The monster's tail came up and opened its mouth.

I grabbed the mummy and ran inside the tomb. Than everything started to shake and I heard boulders coming down. I turned to see that my only way out was blocked.

“Enjoy your death!” `Bakura' said with crackling laugh.

I fell to my knees, completely shooken up from the whole thing and cried after setting the mummy down.

-Normal POV: Modern Day-
Atem was looking at an artifact from one of the hidden tombs his team found. He sighed and stretched his arms over his head. He looked at the pictures of his desk and couldn't help but smile. The pictures held him and Yugi together from the third grade up. He came across one picture where he convinced her to cut her bangs. He smiled as he remembered that time.

^Flashback^
“Don't worry Yugi! It'll be fine.” He said.

“Are you sure?” Yugi asked.

“Positive!” He said. “Besides, it's only going to be your bangs, not your whole head!”

Yugi smiled. “Okay.”

He smiled as his father held some scissors and started to cut the long blonde bangs.

Yugi kept her eyes closed throughout the little appointment.

“Okay, you can open your eyes now.” His father said as she opened her eyes.

“Wow! You did a great job Dad!” He said, and he meant it.

Yugi once had long blonde bangs that nearly touched the ground, now she had bangs that framed her face perfectly. When she looked at herself, she couldn't believe her eyes.

When they showed her to her grandfather, he made everyone laugh. “I could see you!” He said.
^End of Flashback^

He chuckled at the memory and sighed. `I hope she's doing okay.' He thought. Than all of a sudden, he started to feel dread all over him. He placed his hand over his heart and noticed it was beating faster and he started to shake. He knew something wasn't right, but wasn't sure what it was.

“Mr. Misoka!” Someone called from outside his tent. “There's a Mr. Mouto on the phone. He says it's urgent.”

“Thank you.” He said, his voice was slightly nervous. He picked up the phone and answered. “Yes?”

“Oh Atem! I hope I didn't bother you or anything?”

“No, no, it's fine.” Atem said. “So, what was urgent that you wanted to tell me?” His voice sounded shaky.

“Yugi's missing.” Grandpa said, dread and despair could be heard.

Atem stayed silent for a very long time. “What?... How… I don't understand.” He said finally.

“She was last seen in her room, than the janitor saw something really bright in her room and only found the puzzle.”

Atem's eyes widened. “The Millennium Puzzle?”

“Yes.”

Atem sat on his bed, since his legs couldn't hold him up anymore. “You're sure there wasn't a window she could've climbed out of?”

“I'm sorry Atem.”

“I'm the one who should say sorry.”

“Why? You didn't let Yugi into a school that was miles from home and couldn't find a culprit who did.”

Atem wiped away a tear. “I know… I know…”

“I'm going to let your other friends know, maybe they'll help in some way.”

Atem nodded. “Thanks for letting me know.”

“You're Yugi's best friend, you have every right to know first.”

Atem nodded.

“Try to get some sleep.”

“I will.” They hung up. He looked at the picture of himself and Yugi in front of the museum. “So the curse of the puzzle was true.” He said as he saw the smiling girl in the picture. `Yugi…'

-Atem's POV-
I couldn't believe it! Yugi's missing, possibly gone! I heard that the Millennium Puzzle held some kind of curse to those who are not destined for it and those who are destined have to go through a variety of tasks. What kind, I don't know. Rumors of it say that people died from barely touching the damn thing.

Grandpa Mouto, back in his days, was the only one who can touch it without dying like the other bastards. Well, bastards that are after artifacts only for profit. Than Yugi was able to hold it at the age of six. Grandpa never told her this, but her parents didn't really die moments after her birth. Her father died in a cave-in weeks prior, and her mother… she was looking through the attic for something and came across the puzzle.

Grandpa told my father one night while I was sleeping over at the game shop. Yugi, thankfully, was dead asleep that night.

“When Yugi came to it, not only could she hold the box, but hold its pieces as well. It's been her possession ever since. If anyone wants to hold it, they would have to ask her or they would have to be a good friend.” Grandpa said to my father. “She's destined to have the puzzle and complete it, whether or not it's cursed.”

The thing is, I tried to prevent that from happening. When I saw the pieces, I knew it would take years for her to complete it, but I was constantly worried about her. To me, she's like a sister, but lately I felt differently around her.

I placed my hand over my heart and tried to sense her. Its like I always said to her, we have a bond that's unbreakable, and no charmed puzzle is going to take that away from us!

~Back in Ancient Egypt~
-Yugi's POV-
I stopped crying for sometime and carried the mummy down the long dark hallway. Its strange how barely light the body was, probably from the mummification process of removing the organs and making the body dry up a little than wrapping him in cloth. But what's even stranger is that I started to talk to him. That's right, I'm talking to a corpse! But I felt kinda better talking to a mummy. I've heard that the spirit, or ka, of the person comes to visit the body every now and then. Remembering that fact made me believe that Papa Aki's `ka' is somehow looking out for me.

`This was all because of the puzzle.' I thought as I remembered placing the final piece and seeing that light that brought me here. `But why was I sent here? There's no way a weak coward like me could handle this!' I continued to walk down the hallway, slowly, knowing that there are traps in every corner.

`Tout m'entraine
Irresistiblement vers toi, comme le vent
Tout m'enchaine
Irresistiblement a toi, je le sens

Comme le jour revient après la nuit
Et le soleil toujours après la pluie
Comme un oiseau revient vers son nid
Qu' a mon amour, je vais aussi

Tout m'entraine
Irresistiblement vers toi, a chaque instant
