Ch. 9: The Price
“Bow before the gods, Bakura!” The Pharaoh said. “Pillar of the three hidden gods! Obelisk, come forth!”

Bakura looked shocked at the site. `The god of the obelisk…!' He thought. `It wasn't a myth… It's true! The Pharaoh isn't mortal! He is the one great pharaoh who can summon the three legendary gods!'

“The god of the obelisk!” Mahado said.

“Is this what a god looks like…?!” Shada said.

`Obelisk the Tormentor…' Seth thought looking in complete awe.

-Yugi's POV-
“It's real…!” Siamun said. “Pharaoh Akhenamkhanen! If only you could see! The prince who carries on your dream… is the one who wields the three hidden gods!”

“The three hidden gods?” I asked, slightly weakened by the blood lost, but still alive.

“Please save your strength—“

“I want to know… please.”

He sighed and started to explain. “In the shrine of Wedju are the three slabs of the hidden gods. The giant god of the palace… the hawk with the wings of the sun… and the dragon king of the heavens. Though they were said to be guardians for the palace, the names of the three hidden gods was a mystery…”

“A mystery? But then…”

“It was said only the chosen Pharaoh would inherit the names of the gods… and with it the power to wield them… And that man is…”

Both of us looked over at `Atem' `I always knew he was an amazing person, but I never thought he was this amazing, even in the past!' I thought.

-Normal POV-
“Well. My plan was to kill all seven of you and take the Millennium Items…” Bakura said. “I never thought I'd be stopped by a god… But if that's what it takes… Diabound will destroy your god… and then we'll see who the real god is!”

“Bakura!” The Pharaoh said. “The Millennium Items were forged with my father's dream of freedom and peace. I will never forgive the person who tries to steal them!”

“Freedom? Peace? Don't make me laugh…” Bakura said. “The Millennium Items are made of good and evil… They're like a double-edged sword. Whoever possesses them must beware… because, you see… the Millennium Items will respond to that evil that lives in every person's soul… And drag them into a world of evil. The rich and powerful love to talk about `justice'! The right to punish those you fear… to kill those you hate… and call it execution, not murder! Is that really justice? Or is it evil? What you really fear is your enemy's idea of justice! No one can truly draw the line between just and unjust, good and evil. Only the Millennium Items can tell… They are the compass of the soul! Even now, `Great Pharaoh'… Look behind you at your self-righteous priests… can you be sure there isn't one who covets your throne…?”

“What are you saying?!” Akhenaden called. “We priests swore absolute loyalty to the Great Pharaoh!!”

Bakura laughed. “I claim justice on my side as well… I'll kill everyone of you… I'll make myself pharaoh… and with the power of the throne and the Millennium Items, I'll rule the world!”

“Justice…?” The Pharaoh said. “Don't make me laugh, Bakura… Murder!? Grave robbing?! Just where is the `justice in your actions?! You won't get away with this!”

“Diabound!” Bakura called. “Destroy Obelisk! Surpass the power of the gods! Perish!!” He smiled as he called out an attack. “Spiral Wave!!” Diabound summoned the tornado-like attack and directed it to Obelisk, who blocked it with his arm. `What…?!' he thought as he saw that the god still stands. “The Spiral Wave didn't do anything?!”

-Yugi's POV-
My vision is starting to blur as I became weak. `Come on, just hold on a little longer.' I thought as the blood lost is starting to take its toll. `Got to stay awake… for Atem…'

-Normal POV-
“Bakura…” The Pharaoh said. “I'll show you how flimsy your `justice' is… with the iron fist of a god!” Obelisk put it's fist back and hit Diabound. “Godhand Crusher!!” That attack knocked both of them to the ground.

-Yugi's POV-
“Amazing…” I said as I slumped to the ground.

“Young miss?” I heard Siamun, but all the noise in the room started to become distaint.

`Is this it? Am I… dying?' I thought as I closed my eyes.

-Normal POV-
“The ultimate power of the gods!!” Shada said.

“He took them both down…” Akhenaden said. “In one blow!”

Bakura held his chest as he slowly recovered from the shock. `Th-That blow took a lot of my ba… But I still have enough to get out of here…' Diabound got up.

“What…?” Akhenaden said. “He still has power…?”

“I see.” Bakura said. “So that's what your god can do… You're better than I thought… But next time it won't go so well for you. `Great Pharaoh'… So long!” He and Diabound disappeared in the walls.

“Oh no!! He went through the wall…!” Akhenaden said. “His human body too! Quick! Follow him!”

The Pharaoh mentally growled when Siamun called.

“Great Pharaoh! The girl! She's…”

He turned to see that the girl was lying on the ground and looked as though she wasn't breathing. He ran up to see that her lips were slowly turning blue.

“She was able to hold on to watch your fight with that thief before collapsing.” Siamun said sadly.

He looked at her and noticed that she was smiling. “She can't die…” He said. “Not like this.”

The priests stood not far from the scene and bowed their heads in mourn.

Obelisk, who was still around, bent down, causing the priests to stand back and watch in awe.

The young ruler looked up and was confused. “Obelisk?”

The god of the palace mentioned for the ruler to move aside, which he did, and hovered its hand over the girl. Soon the huge god turned into a small bright blue orb, accompanied by a red and yellow orbs, and entered the girl's body.

“What are the gods doing?” Kalim, a priest with the Millennium Scales, asked.

“Reviving her.” Isis said, making everyone look at her. “The gods, apparently, find this child very important and are now brining her soul back to this world from the trials of the afterworld.”

The Pharaoh looked relieved by the news.

“But…” She continued. “There is a price to be paid in order for her to return.”

“A price?” The Pharaoh echoed.

Isis nodded sadly. “My Millennium Taunk won't show me what the price is.”

“So, we would have to wait till she wakes.” Siamun said and Isis nodded.

The body than started to glow and the three orbs returned to the slabs in the shrine. The wound started to heal automatically, as if there wasn't one there to begin with.

“She's healed?” Mahado said, completely in awe that the gods would do for one girl.

When the light faded, the Pharaoh was the first to approach her. `She's breathing!' He thought happily until he saw tears coming down from her closed eyes. `What price did you have to pay?' He picked her up and carried her from the room while the priests followed silently behind. When he reached to what seems like his room the guard opened the door from him. “I'll be retiring,” He said. “Do not disturb me unless it's important.” The priests nodded as he entered his room with the door shut behind him.

He set her down on his bed and covered with the sheets. `By the gods…' He thought as he looked at her once more closely. `She looks so fragile… A simple touch would be enough to break her.' He lightly brushed away a bang from her face. He remembered the smile when he asked her why she risked her life. `Why do I feel so attached to someone, who I don't even know? Not even a name.'

-Yugi's POV-
~Before the Gods helped~
Darkness… That's all I see. Never-ending silence is all I hear. `Am I dead?' I thought as I saw a small light in the distance. `I guess, I am…' I started to head over to the light when three orbs surrounded me. The orbs than became what I recognize as the god monsters. “Huh? What are you doing here?” I asked when I started to glow.

“It is not your time…”

I heard a voice, but it didn't belong to the gods. That's when my glow turned to an orb.

“It is not your time to leave the mortal world Yugi.” It spoke. “You must return to the mortal world and help the Pharaoh defeat the great evil Zorc.”

“But how?! I'm dead!” I said.

“That is why we're here, but for a price.”

I couldn't believe it, I have a second chance to live, but there's a catch. “What do I have to do?” I asked.

“You must give up your memories of your modern life. Your fears, your goals, your friends and family, and your most treasured memories… You have to give up all of that until you've defeated Zorc.”

I couldn't believe it! I have to forget everything?! My childhood, my friends, my grandpa, all the crazy adventures, even Atem!

“I know this is difficult to give up, but you will get them back as soon as the great evil has been eliminated.”

I took a moment to think it through before nodding. The gold orb glowed brighter as the god monsters circled around me. `Looks like some kind of ritual.' I thought as I closed my eyes. `I'm so sorry everyone…' I thought, as I felt like I was being pulled somewhere.

-Normal POV: Modern Day Egypt-
Atem woke up with a start. Sweat covered his face and his heart raced. `What's happening?' He thought as he looked at the clock, which read 10:45 p.m. `I haven't slept for an hour and yet I feel as though something terrible has happened.' His eyes went wide. `Did something happen to Yugi?! Oh dear god, please don't let it be that!' He got up and splashed water on his face. “Calm down Atem.” He said to himself. “You have to be strong for her, you have to have faith in her.” He was about to head back in bed when he felt strange and passed out.

-Atem's POV-
“What the hell?!” I said as everything was completely dark. Than everything became a swirl of colors before it settled to a scene. `What?! This is Egypt!' I thought noticing the people and structure of the place. `No way!' I thought as I saw what looked like Bakura with a huge monster behind him, and it looks like the people in front of me are fighting against him. `There was Duel Monsters here!' Than I felt myself standing up. `Wait a minute, I don't have any control of my body!'

“Pharaoh…!” Said someone that sounded like Grandpa Mouto. “It's too dangerous!! The ka of the priests and the thief are about to clash! Return to the throne!!”

`Pharaoh?' I thought as the thought of getting something away from Bakura was in mind.

“You again?!” Bakura called out.

That seemed to catch my, or the Pharaoh's, attention. `That girl!' The Pharaoh thought as we looked at the girl carrying the mummy and trying to quickly get away without furthering the damage on the mummy. `Yugi?!' I couldn't believe it. `Wow, her hair is short.' I noticed. “Protect the girl!” The Pharaoh shouted. `What was she thinking?!' He thought. `I have to agree.' I thought. `You're going to get yourself killed!'

“Young girl! Over here quickly!” `Grandpa said as she quickens her pace, but not before seeing the attack on her left side.

“No!” The Pharaoh called as he ran up to her. `Oh shit!' I thought, since I don't have control of voice at the moment. He caught her, mummy and all, and carried her to where the throne is. As he set her down he took the mummy and placed it respectfully to the side before going back to her side.

“By the gods!” `Grandpa' said. “You need medical attention now! But…” He looked over at the fight that was going on.

“Why?” The Pharaoh asked her, but she didn't look up. I got a good look at the condition she was in. “Why did you risk your life like that?” He asked, and I wanted to know as well. He placed a hand under her chin and forced her to look up. “Well?” He pressed on.

She smiled. “Because I've always been taught that to never turn your back on what you believe is right.”

He and I looked surprised, no doubt.

“Either that or I'm just out of my mind.” She said as she looked very tired, and not the good kind. “Speaking of which, your father told me to tell you that `justice is in the name of the gods'.”

“Siamun…” He said.

“Yes Great Pharaoh?” `Grandpa' or Siamun said.

“Take care of her, I'll deal with Bakura.”

“B-But—“

“He may do what ever he wants with me… but disturb my family's peace and hurting my friends is unforgivable!” He said as he started to walk out. `Damn, he's like me.' I thought. “I'm going to fight!” The Pharaoh said. “The rest of you get back.” I sighed. `If I known better, I'd say I'm the reincarnation of this Pharaoh… Oh crap.'

“Great Pharaoh…!” The Priests said in unison.

“So the `Great Pharaoh' himself joins the battle!” Bakura said with a chuckle. “You'll join you father as a mummy!” He smiled manianicly. The snake-head tail was aiming to strike at us, or him, oh I give up.

`Justice is in the name of the gods…' The Pharaoh thought.

“Pharaoh!” A priest called. “Look out!”

`And the name of the god is…' The pendent glowed. `OBELISK!' He called in his mind as a light appeared behind him, radiating off powerful energy. `Oh yeah! You better be scared of me now!' I thought when I saw that surprised look on Bakura's face. “I'll show you one of my three great allies… one of the three hidden gods!” The Pharaoh said as a great god-like monster became visual. “Bow before the gods, Bakura!” The Pharaoh said.

I will never forgive the person who tries to steal them!” I was confused. `Okay, I obviously missed something here.'

“Freedom? Peace? Don't make me laugh…” Bakura said. “The Millennium Items are made of good and evil… They're like a double-edged sword. Whoever possesses them must beware… because, you see… the Millennium Items will respond to that evil that lives in every person's soul… And drag them into a world of evil. “Justice…?” The Pharaoh said. “Don't make me laugh, Bakura… Murder!? Grave robbing?! Just where is the `justice in your actions?! You won't get away with this!” I thought about this. `Makes sense, even though I witnessed the Millennium Items being used to take over the world. But there is no way of drawing the line of good and evil. It just depends on the person who tries to go over the edge that makes a big deal.'

“The Spiral Wave didn't do anything?!”

Bakura held his chest as he slowly recovered from the shock while Diabound got up as well.

“What…?” The old priest said. “He still has power…?”

I was surprised to listen to this. `What do you mean you don't know her name?! Unless… She just arrived and couldn't tell her name…' Before I could muse over this any longer, everything became a blur of color as I woke up.

“What the hell was that about?” I said as I got up from the floor and I saw it was seven in the morning. I went to the phone and started to dial.

“… Hello?”

“Ishizu, it's me.”

“Oh, hello Atem, what brings you to call me up?”

“Do you have any free days for us to meet?”

“I'm free throughout the week. Is there something wrong?”

“I'm not sure.”

“Very well, when would you like to meet?”

“I'll get there sometime in the afternoon.”

“Alright, I'll see you this afternoon.” We hang up.

`If that's the vision of the past, than…' I didn't know what to think as I got on the computer and got tickets for the earliest flight. `At least I know Yugi's alive.'
