Ch.27: Time Freeze and the Mysterious Man Appears!

“Come to me,” Akhenaden said. “Zorc Necrophades!”

 

A huge, demonic beast emerged with eyes red as the fires of Hell.

 

`The evil god Zorc!!' Atem thought.

 

“Who awakens me??” Zorc said. “Who desires the power of the shadows??”

 

“It is I…” Akhenaden said.

 

“With the seven forbidden treasures, you have opened the door to darkness and released my power in this world, and the heavens will turn black with clouds, and the earth will be crowned with terror.” Zorc said. “One beat from my will peel flesh from men's bones… One breath from my lungs will burn bones to dust… And you wish to receive a part of that power?”

 

“I do!!” Akhenaden said.

 

`Akhenaden, no!!' Atem thought. `Don't do it! If you unleash Zorc's power, the world is doomed! That's the path of destruction!'

 

“Priest Akhenaden…” Zorc said. “I knew you would come here to complete the dark contract with me. Because you are the one who created the Millennium Items.”

 

“Yes… All was according to your will, Lord Zorc.”

 

“First you gained the power to summon monsters. You trafficked with demons willingly, and with that power in hand, the ambitious one began to fight among themselves. I knew that one day, one of you would gather the Millennium Items in one place, and awaken the Great Darkness.”

 

`Zorc made Akhenaden create the Millennium Items in order to release himself from the shadows!' Atem thought.

 

“Akhenaden…” Zorc continued. “I give you my power!” He held up an orb of strong energy. “Become the slave of my soul, and rule the world!”

 

Heba ran in just in time to see Akhenaden's transformation. `Oh… My… Gods…!' She thought as she saw him, wearing upper body armor, a dark cape, and a white mask that covered his whole face with the exception of one eye hole.

 

Atem, not noticing that she came in, looked ticked and thought. `Damn it! I still can't move!'

 

Akhenaden went up to the tablet and took the Millennium Eye and placed it back in his eye, where the eye hole was, before turning to look at the Pharaoh. “Lord Zorc used his power to stop time, `Great Pharaoh'. The Millennium Eye will soon watch your death throes.”

 

“Move aside, Akhenaden!!” Zorc said. “Pharaoh! I'll burn you to ashes!!”

 

`How can I dodge Zorc's attack?' Atem thought.

 

“Atem!” Heba said as she ran up to him.

 

`Heba!?!' Atem thought completely surprised she wasn't frozen like the others.

 

Akhenaden ignored the reunion and said. “You can't even open your mouth to beg for mercy. This is the end…”

 

Heba held onto the young ruler as the other thought. `The priests are too close! They're also in danger!' He looked at the girl. `And I can't tell her to move aside!'

 

“Zorc Inferno!!” A huge fiery ball gathered. “Now DIE! Pharaoh!”

 

Heba held onto Atem as she watched the attack getting closer until something in her mind was triggered and yelled. “HASAN!!!” Then all of a sudden, the man with the gold mask went in front of them and blocked the attack.

 

“What?!” Zorc said. “How can you deflect my spell?! Who are you?!!”

 

“My name is Hasan!!” The man said. “The spirit that dwells within the light one!”

 

`Dwells within the light…?' Zorc thought.

 

`He's…' Atem thought. `The man from back then!'

 

“Zorc and I are two sides of the same coin!” Hasan explained. “The light and darkness of the world beyond! When the evil god, the will of destruction, awakes, then I appear as well!” He then thought. `My destiny is to protect the Pharaoh!!'

 

`Hasan…' Heba thought. `Why did I know his name? Is he my ka? No… he's a spirit, but it's not mine…'

 

Zorc laughed. “You think a mere spirit can stand against Zorc, the ruler of the Afterworld? I'll show you what a fool you are!” He increased his attack.

 

`Pharaoh!' Hasan thought so that only the young ruler could hear. `You must endure!! When Zorc's attack ends, his heka will be lowered, and he will no longer be able to stop time!'

 

`But Hasan!' Atem thought. `Even if time starts to move again, I and all my priests are badly wounded. He's so strong! Is there any way to defeat him?'

 

`There is still hope…'

 

Atem wasn't sure what the other meant by that.

 

`Pharaoh…' Hasan looked over. `Do you know why the gods saved that girl that you've grown fond of?'

 

He looked surprised and managed to look down to see her burying her face on his chest while enduring the attack.

 

“DIE!!!!” Zorc shouted as he managed to knock the man down.

 

“Hasan!” Both Atem and Heba called, the spell slowly wearing down.

 

“Is he dead?” Akhenaden said then sounded surprised as the man still stands.

 

`Any moment now…' Hasan thought. `Time… will resume… I will protect you until the end. That is my duty and my honor, granted by the former pharaoh!!'

 

`My father!!' Atem thought.

 

Heba was confused, since she couldn't hear the conversation. She used a little of her heka to listen in.

 

`On his death bed, the former pharaoh worried that the Millennium Items might bring disaster to this world, he gave his soul to seal a spirit into a stone tablet.'

 

`Father gave his life to protect the kingdom, and to protect me!!' Atem thought with a sad expression.

 

Heba shed only one tear as she continued to listen.

 

`Oh Father… Was it all for nothing? In spite of everything that you did. The evil god Zorc has been reborn!'

 

`We can do it!' Heba thought.

 

`What?!' Atem thought, a bit surprised that he could hear her.

 

`We can bring Zorc down! I know we can!' She smiled, which made the other smile as well, but disappeared when Zorc spoke.

 

“You who guard the Pharaoh, to live through my hell fire, you must be a spirit from the Afterworld.”

 

“As long as there is light in the Afterworld, even you will cast a shadow, and I am that shadow!!” Hasan said.

 

“If you're nothing but a shadow, then you will be easy to crush.”

 

“A shadow disappears only when it's owner is destroyed!!”

 

Akhenaden laughed. “A shadow, having gained the almighty Zorc's powers, I have become his avatar, his reflection, isn't a reflection greater then a shadow?!”

 

“Interesting…” Zorc said. “Then reflect my power and destroy him! He is yours!”

 

“Akhenaden!” Atem called, showing that the spell is just about to wear out. “Why did you betray us?! Why did you sell your soul to Zorc?”

 

Heba had a small flash of memory of a girl who looked friendly one moment then mean the next. `Anzu…' She thought.

 

“Pharaoh…” Akhenaden said. “You were the living god of this world, you controlled the three gods and all that you surveyed… But, even as a Pharaoh, you can't see into the true darkness, therein lies a power beyond the power of the kings.” He then let out a black lightening like attack. “A shadow power that even the gods can't touch!!”

 

Atem and Heba screamed at the pain the attack was having on them.

 

“Bow to me as you fall in death, Pharaoh!!” Akhenaden continued. “You and your hated father Akhenamkhanen!!”

 

“I…” Hasan thought, he also was in the attack. “I can't move… Such incredible power… and hatred… At this rate, the Pharaoh…' His thoughts stopped when the Mahado summoned the Afterworld Warp.

 

`Mahado!!' Atem thought then noticed that Heba was falling and caught her. `She's out cold.'

 

`Great Pharaoh!' Mahado thought. `Time is moving again!! Look!!'

 

The Pharaoh did and thought. `The priests!!'

 

“Our king!” They said when they saw the huge beast.

 

“What the-?!” Siamun said.

 

“Is this…” Shada said. “The Great Evil God?”

 

Zorc chuckled. “At the end of time, all that remains is the darkness of death, you are fools to stand against me.”

 

“You're wrong!” Atem called. “Our spirits will light the end of time!”

 

“Impossible…” Akhenaden said. “You can't stand against the shadow power!”

 

Seth looked surprised and thought. `Is that…?'

 

Then Hasan thought to the Pharaoh. `The evil one's power is almost infinite, Great Pharaoh, there is only one way to stand against it…'

 

`You mean…' Atem thought as he looked at the unconscious girl in his arms.
