It was unreal how fast the day had gone by. I thought that being on a boat for two days with Honda was going to be the most boring thing ever, but no. To be fair, Honda hadn't been a pain in the ass for the whole day.
'Oh yeah! Look at what I got!'
Joey was jumping of excitement. Honda and Yugi quickly found themselves around him.
'It's a Baby Dragon, quite the monster card, huh?'
'You should figure out a way to strengthen it with the right magic cards.'
Another hint that told me Yugi was a better duelist than he portrayed himself to be. Tomorrow I could finally see him in action, as he was going to save his grandfather.
My thoughts were disturbed by Joey.
'So eh.. Raven, I was wondering.. Eh.. Do you eat? I mean, do you want something to eat?'
He seemed nervous. I couldn't tell weather it had to do with the tournament or maybe with me. It was still cute though.
'Sure, let's grab a bite to eat.'
'I'm going too, I'm starving!'
I knew that wasn't true. Honda had stuffed himself during diner, and he never ate past seven.
'Sorry, you need to stick with the rest. They need a big protective father-figure.'
I looked desperately at Yugi and Anzu, although she didn't notice.
'Uh.. Yeah, Honda. How about you help me sorting my deck?'
Honda sighed and gave in. He gave me a look though, and I knew instantly what it meant. This time I was getting away with it, but the next time we'd be alone, he'd kill me.
'So, what's your favorite card?'
Joey looked up to me from his plate. It was filled with the best kinds of meat and vegetables. A grin found it's way to my face.
'Nice try, but I'm not telling you anything about my strategy.'
'Why not? We'd never rat you out, you're our friend.'
Again. What is it with these guys? Yugi said the same thing to me last night. I was their friend. No, they were wrong. You couldn't become friends with someone you had just met, someone who might very well become your opponent. Were these guys dense?
'Playing with your head and your heart, that's what will get you through. Even if things are rough, you can always count on the cards if you put your soul in them.'
Joey didn't know what to say. Great, now I had scared him off.
'Sorry, I'm not really a lively person.'
I had expected a lot of things. Joey could've gotten up quickly, he could've screamed at me and saying I was an idiot for believing in cards. But, he did none of those things. Instead, he just sat there and laughed.
'What's so funny?'
'You. You are nothing like Honda. You're cute, friendly and you consider others before yourself. Why aren't you confident?'
Now it was my turn to laugh, it should've been. But I didn't laugh, there was nothing funny about this situation.
'Thank you for the compliment, I don't ever want to be like Honda. Oh, and thanks for the food. Goodnight.'
And there I went, leaving Joey sitting at the table, completely rethinking what he could've said that pissed me off. It wasn't him though, it was me. I just hated myself for not being able to stand up to my family. Plus, I couldn't bear the thought of telling Joey why I had lost my confidence.
'Back here again, aren't we?'
My heart stopped for a second.
'You've got to stop doing that, you scared me.'
Yugi scratched his ear while he laughed.
'I'm sorry about that. People never really hear me coming. So, how was your meal with Joey?'
'It was fine, why?'
'No reason.'
Yugi looked scared for a second, but he recovered fast. Did I just imagine that?
'Nice ring.'
'Thanks, I won it in a game of Duel Monsters.'
Again with the scared look. Or.. This time, Yugi looked shocked.
'So, you beat Seto Kaiba?'
What?! How could he know that? Kaiba would've never said anything about his defeat, and I wouldn't either. I couldn't say anything for a few seconds, which almost turned into one minute. Yugi just looked at me, nothing more. It made me nervous.
'What are you talking about?'
Oh my, I could shoot myself. Why would I deny this when it was already on the table.
'Right. Raven, he told me he had lost that ring. I didn't guess in battle, though.'
I sighed.
'Yes I beat Kaiba, what about it?'
'It lets me know what I'm up against. Kaiba is a tough opponent, and he would never go easy on someone. How do you know him anyway?'
That I really didn't want to answer. As I told Yugi that I 'just met him somewhere', I couldn't help but to feel guilty. Yugi had been nothing but nice to me since he met me, and it just didn't seem fair. But I really hated of thinking back when I was with Kaiba. Those two years still weren't processed.
'Raven, you okay?'
'Huh, what?'
'I asked you why you were at his house.'
What the.. Who is this kid? How could he have known that. When Kaiba made me tell my family I went to boarding school, I almost never left his house. Yugi couldn't have seen me.
'I saw you when I was at his mansion when I brought Mokuba home. You were standing there, in the back of the room, wearing a maids uniform. That was you, wasn't it?'
I wanted to say something, I really did, but nothing left my mouth. I wanted to scream to Yugi. No, I wanted to scream to Kaiba. I wanted to defeat him both at Duel Monsters and combat. Just to see him lying there, bleeding with his hopes crushed, just like he crushed my confidence and freedom. I didn't respond to Yugi, I couldn't right now. There was no need to look back to see that he didn't understand any of it.
'Raven..'
'Go to bed. Tomorrow is a big day.'
'Oh yeah! Look at what I got!'
