Aten…Yami of Vengeance?
Seto woke the next morning feeling a tiny body beside him. He opened his eyes and saw Jaimen's smiling face looking down at him.
"Good morning, daddy!"
Seto opened his eyes to see his son sitting up watching him intently. "What are you doing here?"
Jaimen fiddled with his fingers. "I….I wanted to make sure you were still here. I know Dad is staying with his friend. I…I didn't want you to leave me, too."
Seto brought the chibi into a hug. "I won't leave you, Jaimen. You have to understand though, son. I run KaibaCorp. It's my job to be away from KaibaCorp sometimes. There will be times where I may have to leave for a day or a week. But, you have my promise that I will always return."
Jaimen smiled. "You will? You promise?"
Seto nodded and looked into the sapphire eyes that looked so much like his own. "I double promise you. I will always come home to you, Jaimen."
Jaimen snuggled into his father's body and sighed contentedly . "Mommy never held me like this. You must the best hugger in the entire world!"
Seto felt an involuntary shudder as Jaimen put his arms around him. Much to Seto's relief, the phone rang.
"Seto Kaiba."
[Hello, Mr. Kaiba.]
"Zira, how is Donny?"
[He's awake. He wants to speak to you. I've never seen anyone wake up so fast from a gunshot wound.]
Seto shrugged. "This wouldn't be the first time Donny has taken a bullet for me. Tell Donny I'll be over in an hour."
[Goodbye, Seto.]
Seto hung up the phone. "Donny is awake. Do you want to go---?"
"YES! YES! I just have to get dressed!" The chibi bolted from the room and into his own. Seto stepped out of bed and took a quick shower. He called Joey, who insisted on going to see the injured sniper. Hayden and Mokuba wanted to visit Donny and Alex as well.
Joel volunteered to be their driver for the day. He packed his weapon and slid it into his suit jacket.
*************************
Seto and the family arrived at Donny and Alex's room. Alice and his children stood by Donny, holding his hand and stroking his arm.
"Hello, Alice," Seto said quietly.
"Hello, Seto," she muttered sadly.
Mokuba ran to Alex and sat by his bedside. Mokuba thought that it was wrong for a man who had been so helpful to Seto and himself, to lay in a hospital bed with no one to comfort him. Alex had never married and never had any children.
Seto stepped up to Donny's bed. "You wanted to talk to me?"
Donny blinked and took a deep breath. "You…you weren't hurt….were you, sir?"
Seto shook his head. "No. Donny, is that why you called me down here? To ask if I was hurt?"
Donny nodded.
"Donny, you have a real problem with taking care of yourself. I don't want you to worry about me. I'm fine. It's you I'm worried about."
Donny smiled. "That's nice to hear, sir. But….I failed you. Master Joey was hurt."
Joey shrugged. "Wouldn't be the first time I had a broken bone. Forget about it. We just want you to get better."
Donny raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure, Master Joey?"
Joey pat Donny on the shoulder lightly. "Sure, man! Take care of yourself."
Seto crossed his arms. "I postponed the company picnic until you and Alex are able to go."
"When is the picnic, Seto?" Alex asked from his bed.
"When you and Donny are able to go. That's when the picnic will be."
Donny laughed. "I'll be up and around in no time, Mr. Kaiba. You give me a time and I will be there."
Seto grinned, knowing Donny's limits. "I will give you two weeks to get up and going."
Donny laughed, despite the pain. "Give me one week."
"You have two, Donald Massey."
Alex turned his head to Seto. "Do I have a time limit, too?"
Seto walked around Donny's bed to Alex. "You can take all the time you need."
Alex raised his eyebrow. "Isn't that called 'favoritism'?"
Seto pulled the curtain over as Joey and Hayden talked to Donny.
Seto and Mokuba sat by Alex's bedside. "How are you feeling, old man?"
Alex looked up into the blue eyes of his boss. The boss' son walked around the curtain to be with his father.
"Can't complain, Seto. This isn't the worst I've had to endure in my life."
Jaimen looked at the man covered in bandages. "Are you feeling alright?"
Alex looked down into the icy-blue eyes of the boy. Tears came to Alex's eyes. He extended one bandaged hand to stroke the cheek of the child.
"My god, Seto….he looks just like you when you first came to KaibaCorp."
Jaimen's eyes lit up. "I do?!"
"You look just like your father did fourteen years ago. You have the same crystal blue eyes he used to have."
Seto lowered his head. "He is my son, Alex."
Alex looked up at Seto, knowing the reason for his sudden change in personality. "Seto, is this true?"
"I lived with my mommy until she was crushed by a building and now I live with my daddy and my dad!" Jaimen wrapped his arms around Seto's waist tightly. "I love my daddy!"
Mokuba saw Seto's body tense and become rigid. Seto grabbed Jaimen's arms and pried him off of him. "Jaimen, son, why don't you go to Joey? I want to talk to Alex alone."
Jaimen jumped excitedly. "Okay!"
Jaimen ran around the curtain and Seto's body relaxed.
Alex took Seto's hand. Mokuba put a hand on Seto's shoulder.
"Seto, are you okay? I've never seen you so…stiff."
"Seto, you don't have to explain," Alex said quietly. "I know all about it. You don't have to tell me anything."
Seto shook his head. "Mokuba, I can't tell you."
Mokuba had learned years ago not to pry information out of Seto that he did not want to give. He had learned the hard way not to ask Seto about anything personal that he did not care to divulge.
"Alex, I don't want you to worry about me. I just want you to get better."
"I will, Seto. I'll be back to work for you in no time."
Seto grinned. "That's my Alex. You take care of yourself."
Seto heard the door open.
"Where is Mr. Kaiba? Oh, hello, Mr. Kaiba."
Jaimen laughed. "I'm not my daddy, doctor!"
"Really? Hmm…I could have sworn you were Mr. Kaiba!"
Jaimen laughed again. "No! My daddy is behind the curtain."
Seto stepped out of the room to talk to Zira.
Zira held two files and a brochure in his hand.
"Donny and Alex are looking good, considering their injuries. By all rights, you should be arranging a funeral for Donny. But, that man has nerves of steel! Seto, he's very loyal to you. I've had to strap him down in bed since he kept trying to come see you last night."
Seto sighed. "They're two of my best men. If you save their lives, you'll find another level on your house within three days."
Zira shook his head. "I don't need another level on my house. Three is enough, thank you. I don't think my wife and I could clean any more than three."
"Well, you'll find another bonus in your paycheck."
Zira chuckled. "Well, if you're going to go to the bank now to withdraw my bonus from your accounts, can you drop this off at Ryou Bakura's house?"
Seto looked at the brochure in his hand. "What's this for? 'CampSittingBear?'"
"It's a camp for children who are terminally ill. It has activities like swimming and wallet-making and painting. I know Aten loves to paint. It's a weekend type of camp. It has all the facilities necessary should any medical emergencies occur. I think it would be good for Aten to go to one of these camps."
Seto looked at the happy faces of bald children and children in wheelchairs. They looked so happy.
"Did you discuss this with Ryou?"
Zira nodded. "I called Ryou up this morning. He said that he was interested. He also told me that Bakura is back on his feet."
"Really? We'll have to go over and see him."
Zira pat Seto on the arm. "Go on, Seto. I'll take care of my patients."
Seto said goodbye to Donny and Alex. As they walked out, Joey turned to Seto.
"Do you think two weeks is enough time for Donny?"
"This is nothing compared to the time he was
hit by three. I know what Donny is capable of, Joey. Laying down and relaxing is not one of them."
***********************
Seto knocked on Ryou's door and was surprised to see a tired Malik open the door. Joey and Seto looked the Egyptian hikari from head to toe.
Malik's eyes were half-open. His hair was streaked with gray. Wrinkles were around his eyes.
"Hello, Seto."
"Malik? Are you okay, buddy?" Joey asked.
Marik stepped behind Malik. "Hello, moneybags! What brings you down our way?"
Mokuba and Hayden watched as Malik's eyes widened and Malik's face turn pale.
Seto held up a brochure. "I'm here to give this to Ryou. Where is he?"
"Upstairs with Bakura," Marik answered, putting his arms around Malik's waist from behind.
Malik looked up, horror plain in his eyes. "Ryou transferred some of his energy to Bakura last night."
Seto brushed past the two Egyptians and climbed the stairs.
Jaimen ran into the house and up to Aria playing with her dolls. Hayden walked timidly up to Aria.
Seto, Joey, and Mokuba walked up the steps to Ryou's bedroom. It never surprised Mokuba that his brother went where he pleased even without permission. Seto opened the bedroom door and found Bakura sitting on the bed, holding Ryou's hand.
Ryou opened his eyes weakly from the bed. He turned his head weakly to the side. "Seto? What are you doing here?"
Seto put the brochure in Ryou's hand. "Zira wanted me to give you this."
Ryou picked it up and looked at it. "Thank you, Seto." Ryou yawned. "I thought this would be a good opportunity for Aten to get away and be with other children who are just like him."
Joey looked at the brochure. "'CampSittingBear?'"
"It's a camp for children with terminal illnesses. Zira told us about it during Aten's last check-up," Ryou said. "This place has lots of stuff for Aten to enjoy."
Joey scratched his head. "Do you really think he'll be able to leave Robbie behind?"
Bakura rubbed Ryou's hair gently. "It's only for overnight. Besides, Aten will love the painting and the crafts."
Seto nodded. "It would be good for him to get away for a couple of days."
"Aten's sensitive about his illness. He's been talking to Marik and I about the Underworld. I think Aten really
needs a day or two where he can forget about that and be a normal kid."
Seto watched Ryou put the brochure on the side table and panted from the effort. "Malik said that you gave Bakura some of your energy last night."
Ryou nodded with tears in his eyes. "If I didn't do anything, Bakura was going to die."
Bakura turned his head away from Seto and Joey's gaze. "After all I've done to him…..he saved me."
"How could I not, love? I don't want to see you die on me."
Seto looked down at Ryou. "Donny and Alex are doing a little better this morning. You can take the kids over if you want."
Bakura nodded. "Aria's downstairs with her dolls and Aten scampered over to Robbie's."
"Well, I also wanted to invite you guys to the KaibaCorp company picnic. It's been moved two weeks late because of Yami's little tantrum."
Joey snickered and turned to Seto. "You know, Aten won't want to go without Robbie. You should go to Miranda and invite her."
Seto's stomach suddenly churned with the thought of confronting Miranda again. That woman did nothing but torture the hell out of him. "You're coming with me, puppy."
Joey shook his head. "Nah. I'll stay here and talk to Malik. He looked a little sad."
Seto's eyes widened in panic. "Don't let me be alone with that woman!"
Joey shook his head. "Hey, Malik looks like he needs a shoulder. You go invite Miranda."
Seto felt shivers up his spine with the thought of seeing the pregnant woman who found teasing him to be as much fun as an Olympic sport.
**************************
Miranda watched the woman on the tape stretch and flex. She found her pregnant belly got in the way of most of her daily exercises. She could feel the sweat coursing down her neck and shoulders and sliding between her breasts.
Her spandex was stretching beyond her liking and her halter top struggled to keep her chest from moving.
Her pregnant belly stuck prominently in front of her.
"That's it," she said taking a towel in her hand. "I'm taking Robbie out and buying a new exercise outfit!"
Vera walked down the stairs yawning. "Good morning, Mira-dear!"
"It's almost noon! I thought you were going to make me some tea this morning."
Vera put a finger to her chin. "Must have slipped my mind. Do you have anything to make pancakes?"
Miranda stretched her arms up. "In the refrigerator."
"Great! I take butter and syrup on mine. Make sure they're not too thin, Mira-darling."
Miranda laughed. "Vera, I'm doing my exercises."
"So you are. I can wait until you are done. And don't forget to make a fresh pot of coffee while you are at it."
Vera stepped outside and lit up a cigarette, sucking at it desperately.
Miranda heard someone knocking on the door. She stopped the tape and opened the door.
A sly smile crossed her lips. "Well, well…hello, Mr. Seto Kaiba," she said seductively as she leaned against the door.
Seto looked at her up and down. The sight surely would have made Joey into a puddle of ooze.
Seto couldn't help but turn pale at her sweaty body, the drops of moisture creeping down her exposed skin.
"Mir…Mir…umm…."
Miranda took the towel and plunged it between her breasts and wiped her cleavage and up to her chest. "Quite a hot day….isn't it?"
Seto reached into his pocket and grabbed a stomach pill. "Umm….I…came to…" Seto stammered as he looked at her pregnant belly.
Miranda put a thumb under his chin and lifted it. "I'm up here, Seto. My baby is down there."
Seto turned beet red. "Yes…umm…I know that."
Miranda reached beside her and grabbed a water bottle. "Excuse me…..but working out in this heat and it kills me."
Miranda opened the bottle and chugged it quickly, some of the cold water running down her chest and covering her chest.
Seto held onto the railing by the steps to steady himself.
"What can I do for you, Seto Kaiba?" she asked in a seductive voice.
Seto wiped his forehead. "Would you…and Robbie…like to come to the KaibaCorp….company…picnic?"
Miranda smiled. "Why, Mr. Kaiba….you came over here to invite me personally? Why aren't you sweet? When is it going to be?"
"Two weeks. August 3rd. It's at my summer home. Ryou can give you directions."
Miranda smiled. "I think Robbie will have a blast. Consider us there, Mr. Kaiba."
Seto watched as the cold water slipped down her body. "Okay. Good. Umm…bye."
Miranda grinned as Seto walked away quickly. She ran her hand through her hair. "Seto, you're so much fun!" she said as she shut her door. "I hope I'm not too hard on him."
*************************
Vera lit up her third cigarette and blew it into the air. Aten was chasing Robbie around the back yard, oblivious to the leering eye of the woman.
"Don't run on the grass, you little weasels!"
Robbie and Aten stopped running. The two boys exchanged devilish little grins. Aten tackled Robbie, jumping on top of his friend. The two boys engaged in a mock wrestling match.
"Don't play like that! Someone might think you boys are…odd."
Robbie looked up. "We don't care what anyone thinks about us."
Robbie rolled on top of Aten and Vera gasped.
"Robert Allen Morgan! Get off of that boy!"
Aten tickled Robbie and Robbie fell over on his side. Aten threw himself on top of Robbie and pinned Robbie's wrist to the ground. Robbie looked up into the sparkling brown and purple eyes hovering above him.
"Give us a kiss, Robbie," Aten said with a grin.
Robbie struggled, laughing hard. "Aten!" Robbie threw Aten off and both boys jumped to their feet.
Robbie narrowed his eyes, wriggling his fingers. Aten narrowed his eyes, growling low in his throat.
Vera stepped towards the two boys. "You boys stop this now! You both should be ashamed of yourselves!" Vera grabbed the boys by the shoulders. "Wrestling and touching each other! Robert, your mother would be ashamed of you!"
"Let go of me!" Robbie shrieked.
Aten growled at Vera as her hand clenched hard around Robbie's wrist.
"You're hurting me!" Robbie cried out as his hand turned red.
Aten growled and his hair spiked. "Let go of Robbie!" The Egyptian boy darted towards Vera's hands and sank his teeth into her flesh.
Vera screamed and released both boys. Robbie watched Aten seethe, blood coming down the corners of his mouth.
Robbie saw the hairs stand up on the back of Aten's neck.
For the first time in his life, Robbie stepped back, afraid of his friend. "Aten?"
Aten kept his eye on Vera as he stood beside Robbie, wrapping his arm around Robbie's waist protectively.
"MIRANDA MORGAN! GET OUT HERE!"
Miranda ran out of the house. "What is it?"
Vera pointed angrily at Aten. "That little creature bit my hand!"
Miranda looked down at Aten. "Aten? Did you bite her?"
"But, mom, she grabbed me and Robbie!"
"Vera, don't ever touch my son again!" Miranda turned to Aten calmly. "Aten, I think you should go home."
Aten's hair fell as it became less spiky. "But….mom, I….I was proteting Robbie!"
Miranda saw the tears swelling in Aten's eyes. "I'm sorry, Aten. Why don't you go home?"
Robbie looked at Aten and back at his mother. "But, mom! Aten was---."
"I'm sorry, Aten. It's best if you go home, sweetheart."
Aten sighed and hugged Robbie. "Goodbye, Robbie."
Aten stopped beside Vera. "I don't lite you."
Aten walked out of the gate.
Robbie watched Aten walk down the street. "Aten…."
Miranda put a comforting hand on Robbie's shoulder. "I'm sorry, Robbie."
Vera sobbed. "My hand! My beautiful hand!"
Miranda helped Vera into the house with her injured hand.
When Vera had finished her fake sobs, she stepped outside for another cigarette.
Robbie sat on the front step, moving his clubbed foot sadly around the concrete.
"You're better off without Aten, Robbie. He's just another freak. Of course, 'birds of a feather flock together,' right, Robert?"
Robbie buried his face in his hands and limped to the back yard crying.
Vera smiled proudly at herself. The first part of her plan had succeeded…..Aten and Robbie were separated. All was going according to plan.
************************************
Malik took one of the books from the museum and ran up to his room. He locked the door, preventing his yami to come into the room while he was searching.
"Ryou said that Yami chanted something before he died and said that Bakura and Marik would be changed. My yami's changed alright….he hasn't taken me without my permission in a while. There has to be a reason why he did that to me again!"
Marik heard tiny footsteps run up the stairs and disappear into Aten's room beside his. Aten shut his door loudly, making the walls shake.
Malik flipped through the book's pages, reading the ancient Egyptian texts. "This is the only thing that my father taught me that was actually useful," he muttered to himself.
His eyes skimmed the page as he shifted uncomfortably on the bed. Malik stopped breathing when he saw mention of the "Spirit of the Great Pharaoh."
Malik traced the hieroglyphs with his finger. "Interesting. It says here that the 'Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle, inhabited by the spirit of the Great Pharaoh Yami, attains the power over health and sickness. His great powers lie in making sickness worse or improving the state of mortal health.' Yami has the power to take someone's health away! That's why Marik forced himself on me! Yami made him worse! Yami made Bakura worse, too! It took Ryou making the sacrifice he did to keep Bakura alive. Why didn't Yami cure himself of the Yami Virus?" Malik read the passage again. "'Mortal health!' He can cure the health of mortals! Does that mean……Yami can cure Aten of his heart failure?!"
Malik sighed and shook his head. "Yeah, right. Yami wouldn't cure Aten of anything. Yami would rather see Aten die than see him cured."
He was ready to close the book when his eye caught a glimpse of Marik's name. "What's this? 'The Spirit of the Millennium Rod's powers lie in control of the elements….wind, fire, air, and water shall bow to his command. These powers, combined with those of the Shadow Realm, shall prove dangerous. The Spirit of the Millennium Ring, King of Thieves, shall possess Shadow Powers beyond measure.'"
Marik turned the page. Above the writing was a picture of what looked like Aria. She was standing with a trident in her hand, her belly was protruding with pregnancy. Her long, white, spiky hair fell around her shoulders and down her back. Malik read. "'The offspring of the Spirit of the Ring shall have Shadow Powers more dangerous than that of her sire. She shall bear the High Priest's child, causing her world to fall into chaos. Armed with her Millennium Trident, and standing beside the Yami of Vengeance, she shall stand against the embodiment of Greed and Jealousy.'" Malik cocked his head to the side. "When was this written?" Malik flipped to find a compilation date. There was none to be found.
Malik looked at the picture of Aria. Around her neck, she wore a seashell necklace. "Aria has no connection to the sea. Why is her weapon a trident and why is she wearing a seashell necklace?"
Malik flipped the page and saw a picture of a young man. "What's this? There's a ninth Millennium Item? It doesn't say what the Item is."
Malik read the caption. "'One yami shall possess the power over Vengeance. The seed of the Spirit of the Millennium Rod, armed with his Scepter of Ra, shall be merciless towards his foe….gentle towards his kin. Revenge and Murder shall be his sustenance. An early death shall claim his young body, but an eternity of Vengeance awaits."
Malik looked at the figure at the top of the page. The figure had spiky white hair with lightening bolts in his hair. His body was thin and bony. On the back of the figure was carved the word "MINE."
Malik gasped. "Oh dear Ra! It's Aten!"
