Chapter Two: Indulgence
~~
“WHAT THE FUCK!!”
Yusuke scrambled backwards and onto his feet, staring slack jawed and wide eyed at the woman who came so close to killing him and his friends a few seconds ago.
Kagome pulled her forehead off Shippou’s shoulder and looked up at him with a soft, dreary smile.
“Arigatou… Shippou-kun.”
“Any time.”
He promised, his adult feature’s strikingly beautiful, his bronze colored hair falling into his face much like how Inuyasha’s did. His green eyes spoke of wisdom, incomprehensible years worth of knowledge. This was not the kitsune kit who once cowered behind her hair when blood was spilled; not the infant who sought after mischief and attention.
This was Shippou, a Kitsune youkia whom given the chance, would give Sesshomaru himself a run for his money. This was Shippou, the Guardian of the Keeper.
He alone could balance and neutralize the intoxicated Keeper; he alone could withstand her might without buckling under the pressure, or going mad from exposure.
“Uh, EXCUSE ME but I do believe I have a ‘right’ to know just WHO THE FUCK YOU PEOPLE ARE AND WHAT YOU WANT!!”
Kagome and Shippou turned deadpan stares at the spirit detective, but it didn’t slow Yusuke’s rant in the least, if anything it pissed him off more. He pulled his hands up his arms like he were rolling up sleeves that weren’t there. He began to march on them when suddenly the red headed demon placed a hand on his shoulder at the same time a short black haired demon barred his path, redirecting the gaze of the two whom sparked their interest as well as captivated their attention and curiosity.
:Well, mine at least.:
:Mine as well, Hiei. It would seem we’ve come across a legend.:
:Legend?:
:From what Youko’s memories indicate, this woman and the kitsune, are Guardian’s.:
:Guardians of what?:
:A sacred jewel.:
“Ah, sorry about that! You caught me at the wrong time, you see when I fight, harmless or not-.”
“You don’t have to explain anything to them, Kagome.”
The young woman of twenty-two looked up at the youkia of well over five hundred and smiled.
“Don’t worry, Shippou. I know what I’m doing.”
“Do you?”
“Hai.”
“If you’re sure.”
Kirara growled/hissed and trotted over to Kagome, her paws thudding against the ground as she made her way. The miko was already lifting her hand as the neko slipped her head under the awaiting palm and purred. Kagome turned to look at the three men and smiled, scratching Kirara’s ear.
“I’m sure you two know who and what I am.”
She addressed the youkia, but then her eyes settled on the human. She tilted her head to the side, her eyes flashing pink as the cycle of aura became visible to her eyes.
“The clash of youki and human energy… You are hanyou.”
Yusuke’s eyebrows shot up. Both the red headed demon and the black haired one simply awaited further explanation.
“How’d… Wait, who the fuck are you again?”
He asked, waving his hand once and tilting his head. Kagome giggled and looked down at Kirara’s head, watching her finger’s through hooded eyes.
“My name is Higurashi, Kagome. This is my brother Higurashi Souta, and my good friend Shippou.”
She looked up at the three and smiled then, removing her hand and moving around Kirara, advancing towards them.
“What are your names?”
“What the fuck-damnit! Bitch, I’m not-.”
“My name is Youko Kurama.”
“I am Hiei.”
“What?! Dude-!”
“This is our leader, Urameshi Yusuke.”
Kagome arched an eyebrow at Kurama, who gestured to the black haired man.
“Leader?”
“We work for the Reikai.”
Hiei responded quickly, turning the eyes of the miko on him.
“Reikai… Ah yes, I forgot.”
She said, glancing at the sky, as if expecting to see the barrier. Hiei glanced at Kurama, who only had eyes for the miko.
“Kagome-dono, if I may, ‘what’ did you forget?”
“The separation of the worlds. The Spirit World, the Demon World and the Human World.”
“I must say, Kagome, it was one of your most promising idea’s yet, wasn’t it?”
“Thank you Shippou.”
Kagome sad almost absently as she looked between the three who looked like they swallowed something that was crawling around in their stomachs.
“You…”
Yusuke tried. Kurama did too.
“Your… Idea…”
Hiei frowned.
“Impossible, the barrier’s were erected-.”
“Exactly five hundred and fifteen years ago. The Reikai barrier was erected by the holy powers of monk and a priestess. The Maikai barrier as erected by a Taiyoukia and a wind sorceress. The Ningenkai barrier was stabilized by a Taiji-ya and a hanyou.”
Hiei’s eyebrows rose sharply as he glanced at Kurama. The red head was watching Kagome with interest, his left hand slipping into his pocket to strike a familiar, comfortable pose.
“You… How are you alive?”
Kagome smiled and cheesed it, flashing him a peace sign.
“I was wondering who was gonna ask that!”
Souta stepped forward then, polishing his Chakram with clean rag. Kagome glanced at him with a smile before turning back towards Kurama.
“But I’m afraid that’s a secret, and I can’t tell you. But I can tell you that I’m only twenty two, and I go to college. I’m a major in the medical field.”
“M-medical field…”
Yusuke whined, bent over and still looking at her like she was the most strangest and scariest thing he’d ever saw. Hiei glanced at his leader and frowned.
“Compose yourself, Detective.”
Yusuke stood up and slipped his fingers into his hair. Kurama and Hiei watched him for a moment, then shrugged.
“Whatever, you guy’s can stay here but you have to speak with Genkai first. She owns this territory.”
Kagome glanced at her brother, who smiled sheepishly and shrugged.
~~
“Oi! Baba! You in here?”
“Shut up slacker, I’m watching Tv!”
“Ch.”
Yusuke looked at Kagome and shrugged, gesturing her forward. Kagome blinked and looked back at Shippou and Souta, Kirara sitting on the kitsune’s shoulder. Turning back towards Yusuke, Kurama and Hiei, she walked through the Shoji door’s, following the boy’s through a hallway until they reached a living room with a tiny old woman sitting in front of a Tv with a steaming hot pot of tea beside her on a tray, with a cup in her hand.
“Genkai-sama…?”
The old woman lowered the cup from her lips, then set it down. Yusuke nudged Kagome again, making the miko blush and glare at him.
“My name is Higurashi, Kagome and I-.”
“You are a priestess. Of great power.”
Genkai rose to her feet, then slowly turned to greet the miko. Kagome blinked in surprise.
“Yes, I know who you are priestess. You are the founder of the Barrier’s, correct?”
Kurama and Hiei frowned.
:Did you know she knew that, fox?:
:Absolutely not.:
:Hm.:
“H-hai!”
“I’ve visited your shrine many a times, the Sunset Shrine. How interesting the ancient power that flows in the compound. I myself was very surprised to know that such a shrine continued to exist in this day and age. For such a long time, no less. But what confuses me, is why seven years ago, it was no more than an ordinary shrine, with dormant power, and now it is a beacon of spiritual power.”
The old woman’s dark brown eyes bore into Kagome with such an intensity that the miko’s spine went rigid, a small flush spreading across her chest like a cool splash of water.
She’s been watching us…
“You’ve been watching me.”
“Correct.”
Genkai said, folding her hands behind her back, meeting Kagome’s stare with an equally promising stare.
Yusuke shifted uncomfortably, glancing at the youkia who stood beside him, with Hiei in the middle.
“Then you know why I’m here.”
“Correct.”
“You accept?”
“Hai.”
Kagome bowed and Genkai dipped her head. Kagome turned then and went back the way she came, leaving behind a baffled hanyou.
“W-what the fuck was that?!”
Genkai turned to face her Tv, sat down and picked up her tea cup.
“Don’t worry so much Slacker, she’ll be a great influence on you. Maybe you’ll learn something from her.”
“Ch! Like I’d learn anything from a girl!”
“I do believe, Yusuke, that it was a ‘girl’ who took you out with a single punch.”
Kurama muttered softly, lifting a hand to hide his smile as his leader turned towards him with a scowl.
“I agree. But you have no room to talk, Kurama. She very well could have killed us had the kitsune not come to stop her.”
“Kitsune.”
Genkai whispered, glancing over her shoulder at the fire apparition.
“Aa.”
“The Guardian.”
“You know of them Genkai.”
“I know as much as you do Kurama, as much as Youko.”
“Damnit your old, you hag!”
Genkai ignored him and turned back to her Tv station in favor of whipping the tea cup over her shoulder. Hiei stepped back just time.
“Eh-?”
Yusuke turned to watch Hiei and failed to notice the at cup with steaming hot water as it cracked against his temple, drenching him in the burning liquid.
~~
Kagome touched ground off the porch and smile.
“Kyaaaaa!! BABA!!! Damnit!”
The miko blinked and twisted her torso around to look back into the house only to see the two demon approaching, he red head giggling softly behind his hand, while the other simply smirked, his eyes closed, obviously picturing the scene that happened involving Yusuke.
Kurama reached them and smiled politely.
“So, Higurashi-san, you said you are a medical major?”“Hai.”
“A college student?”
“Hai.”
“How wonderful, would you mind if perhaps you recommended me? High School has become a bit to easy for me.”
Kagome smirked knowingly.
“I see, of course I will.”
Kurama bowed.
“Arigatou.”
“You know where my Shrine is, I assume?”
“I can find it.”
“Good, tomorrow at five.”
“In the morning?”
“Hai.”
“I’ll be there.”
“It’s a date!”
Kagome winked as she reached into her hair and pulled out a sleeping neko.
“Kirara!”
She giggled and tossed the kitten into the air. The sleepy neko opened her eyes and unrolled, erupting in fire and tossing her head, stretching in mid air before landing beside Kagome. Souta climbed up and Kirara took to the air.
“Bye Kagome!”
Souta waved and Kagome smiled, raising her hand in departure. She then turned to Shippou and the youkia stepped back, flexing his fists as blue fox fire sparked and held in his fingers, then spread up his arms and slowly engulfing him.
Kagome crossed her arms in a lady-like way, her right hand holding her left elbow, her left hand touching her right bicep.
Hiei’s eyes were wide, having never seen a kitsune transform and eager to know what the kitsune would look like. He then turned to Kurama, who blinked and looked down at his friend.
“Oro?”
Hiei frowned and looked back at the forest kitsune as the fox fire grew into an enormous bulb of youki. When it shattered a graceful and slim paw stretched outward, leading up to a strong bronze chest, to a powerful neck and slender snout. Glowing blue eyes were narrow and wise as the kitsune tossed his mane, shaking the kitsune-bi from his body. Kagome smiled and walked over to him, sliding her hands up the side of his neck, letting her finger thread through the fur before she cupped his jaw.
“I forgot how beautiful you are, Shippou-kun, when you’re like this.”
Shippou’s tails, all four of them, twisted and swished around behind him, his slender waist giving way to powerfully lean hind legs. He raised his head out of her reach and offered her his shoulder. She easily swung up onto the demon, who was about the size of a draft horse, then turned to look at Kurama and Hiei, in time to see Yusuke join them.
Shippou had twin baby blue marking that stretched from his nose to the corner of his mouth and curved down his jaw to his chin. Large ears hooked forward as he lifted a paw, his lips rippling as he growled. Kagome eased his ruffled feathers by scratching behind a large bronze ear. A patch of fur from his brow to the tips of his tails, was rust colored and was longer and fluffier, the patch on his head long enough to barely fall into his eyes.
“Wh-what the hell is that?”
“This is Shippou-kun, Urameshi-san, surely know that demon’s have true forms. Why I’m sure Hiei-san has shown you his before?”
Yusuke turned white and glanced shakily at the Fire apparition, who glanced at him through narrowed, red eyes. Gulping the Reikai Detective lifted a hand at Kagome with a smile.
“Uh, yeah sure! Well, see ya!”
“I’ll be back tomorrow after classes, this time, Urameshi-san, I wish to spar with you.”
“Eh, but what about… ya know?”
Kagome blinked then smiled brightly.
“Oh, that won’t be a problem so long as Shippou-kun in there.”
The kitsune snarled and lowered his head, his ears snapping back.
:Which I will be.:
Kurama and Hiei were the only one’s, beside Kagome, who understood the body language, but the message was still clear.
With that, Shippou’s muscles bunched and Kagome tightened her legs around his ribs and dug her fingers into his rust colored fur, seconds before Shippou spun tail and blurred out of human sight.
However, Kurama and Hiei saw him disappear into the forest.
“A forest kitsune.”
“Eh?”
Yusuke blinked at Kurama, folding his arms as Hiei turned back into the house. Kurama smiled
“Shippou-san, is a forest kitsune.”
“You mean there are different kinds?”
“Hai.”
“Oh, what are you?”
“A silver kitsune.”
“What’s that?”
“A moon kitsune, we are rare.”
“Ah.”
~~
“You will have to explain to me, Kurama, why it is you wish to remain close to the miko.”
“That’s easy. She’s befriended a kitsune, I’m curious.”
“Curious or attracted?”
“Possibly both.”
“Hm.”
“Are you?”
“I am curious.”
“Ah.”
Kurama was reclining on his bed, staring up at the ceiling while Hiei sat on the windowsill in the open window.
The fire demon directed a question to his kitsune friend, that had been bugging him since he noticed the red heads near obsession with the miko.
“What is it that attracts you, exactly?”
“The fact that she had the idea to erect the barriers. The fact that she’s bound to a kitsune.”
“Hm.”
“Why are you curious?”
“The barrier was erected over five hundred years ago, how is it possible she is only twenty two and yet it was her who rose them?”
“I must admit that I am curious about that as well.”
“Hm.”
