Chapter Three: Just Another Day…
~~

Ding, Dong, Ding-Dong, Dong-Ding!

“--DNA is a polymer with a high molecular weight, a giant molecule formed from a few simple molecules linked repeatedly by chemical bonds. The repeating units that form the molecule are nucleotides, each built from similar components: a phosphate group, a 5-carbon sugar, deoxyribose, and a nitrogenous base.”

The teacher spoke the words clearly as he wrote them down on a chalk board. I sat in the back row with my pencil absently jotting down the notes as I spaced out watching the teacher’s back. Eventually I was pulled out of my space out by a soft tap on my shoulder, I flinched softly and whipped my head around to see the red head. My eyes widened.
No way…
“Kurama?”
He smiled at me and leaned forward.
“My grade’s were so impressive that I was quickly and easily transferred. Of course, had it not been for your recommendation, and your own remarkable grade’s, I might not be here right now.
“I’ll say, it only took you, what, two day’s?”
I mumbled softly over my shoulder as I returned to my note’s. He chuckled behind me as the teacher turned towards us and began to preach.

Ding, Dong, Ding-Dong, Dong-Ding!

I picked up my note’s and placed them into my folders, then rose from my seat and made my way to the door.
“Kagome, a word?”
I stopped and turned as Kurama walked up towards me.
“What is it, Kurama-san?”
“Ah, please, just Kurama.”
I smirked and exited the classroom, the red head tagging along quickly.
“Alright, Kurama. You wanted to talk about something, important, right?”
“Ah, well yes actually. You see, the Maikai holds Dark Tournaments, battle’s between youkia.”
“I’m following you.”
I mumbled as I stopped at bulletin board, scanning it.
“Hm. So you’ve heard of it?”
“No.”
I drawled slowly with a smile.
“But I’m sure you’re about to tell me.”
Turning towards him, I winked then started walking again.
“Hm.”
We turned into the cafeteria and walked towards a sandwich machine.
“The Dark Tournament, is a way for greedy human men to gamble in blood. It is a way for demon’s to establish to each other just who is powerful. Problem is, once again my friends and I are being suckered into play. If we do not fight and win, a league of powerful human men called the Black Hand Organization, will tear down the barrier of the Ningenkai.”

A chill raced down my spine as I bent down to grab my sandwich.
“How do they benefit from your victory?”
“They don’t.”
Nodding in understanding I glanced back at him.
“In other words, in order to win, we have to eliminate the Black Hand club, right?”
“Correct.”
“You’ve been asked to propose to me this…Promising fighting experience?”
His emerald green eyes widened only a fraction.
“By the Reikai, yes.”
“Ah, King Yanma.”
Moving to the right, I stopped in front of a lemonade vending machine.
“Actually, its his son who runs the Reikai.”
“Oh? You mean his son Koenma?”
“Yes, you know him?”
“No, but I’ve heard of him.”

~~

The sounds of the city pressed against my skull the moment I stepped outside, the crowds of students around me deafening as I made my way towards the bike rack.

As I peddled down the street, my back pack slung against my side, I thought about this Dark Tournament, and about Kurama. How did I play into this little rouge, how did Kurama benefit, where was the loop whole, was their one?

I screwed my eyes shut and shook my head, then reopened my eyes and peddled faster. Reaching the bottom step of the Shine step’s I swung off my bike and rolled it into the bushes, where a secret bike rack was. While climbing up the steps, I looked around me at the lush vegetation that grew on the Higurashi complex, the bamboo tree’s that grandpa had planted three years ago, the bonsai tree’s that grandfather had placed n certain steps, in certain places.

Cresting the top of the stair’s, I looked around the Higurashi complex and smiled, the rustle of autumn leaves scraped against the concrete, the rattling of those still in the tree’s as the limbs cracked and creaked like old bones.
“Oi! Kagomeee!”
I looked up to see Shippou and a woman. This woman had glassy black hair and steel blue eyes. But it was an illusion. Flawless; but an illusion.
“Shippou-kun?”
“Kagome, I’d like you to meet Azuka O’Hara.”
The woman’s hair reached her beautiful hip’s, sliding across her shoulder like silk.
“It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Kagome-sama.”
I bowed in return, the woman was kitsune, that was for sure. No demon save a powerful kitsune, could deceive me thus.
“So you’ve heard of me?”
“Hai. Shippou-kun speaks of you non-stop.”
The kitsune said with a fond smile. I stood up and carefully examined the female youkia.
“Perhaps, if you followed me, you might show me what you really look like.”
“Ah, not yet.”
The female giggled with a fond wink, holding up a finger. I glanced at Shippou, but the forest kit’s eyes was glued to the female at his side. I blinked and returned to gaze at the female.

“I know of the Dark Tournament. I’ve come to invite the both of you.”
I arched an eyebrow.
“The Dark Tournament?”
“Hai.”
“On what grounds?”
Shippou glanced at me, and I returned his glance for a second, before turning back to the female youkia.
“On grounds that if you don’t, the Ningenkai will cease to exist.”
Shippou swallowed and glanced at me.
“Who is this woman, Shippou?”

The male kitsune fidgeted under my stare. The female, in a navy blue business suit, turned to watch the male as well.
“She’s… My mate, Kagome.”
My eyebrows rose up.
“She’s… Been away for some time now, but we’ve been mated since… Well after you disappeared, I spent five hundred years waiting to return to you, you may not have noticed the passage of time, but I have. It may have seem only a few seven years to you, but it’s been a long time for me. Azuka’s been at my side for over two hundred years.”
My lips fell open in surprise. Why did I suddenly feel betrayed? I looked at the female kitsune to see her watching her mate out of the corner of her eyes.
He never told us… He does not care for your feeling, little miko.
I shook my head and touched my temple.
No, he has every right to mate with someone.
“Wait… How come you never told me?”
“I uh…”
Shippou scratched the side of his face with a shrug.
“You never asked?”
I touched my upper lip with the tip of my tongue as I shook my head again and shrugged with an amused smile.
“Alright. I’ll buy that. Now, about this Dark Tournament, how are you involved, Azuka-sama?”
The woman crossed her arms gracefully, her right hand holding her left elbow as she shifted her weight onto her left hip.
“My reasons are my own. However, the Black Hand and I have a date that’s long since over-due.”
I nodded and watched the youkia with interest, then turned to Shippou with a ‘we will talk later’ look, then bowed respectfully and excused myself.

Toweling my hair dry, I walked into my room only to see a male kitsune sitting Indian style in the middle of my bed, staring at me with puppy dog eyes. I stared at him blankly for a minute, then blinked and made my way to my dresser, where I proceeded to dress into my pajama’s.
“I’m sorry, Kagome. I didn’t mean to forget.”
“Its alright, Shippou-kun. But… How did you meet? Do you have any kits yet? Do you plan on having any? Do you mate for life, like Inu’s and Ookami’s?”
I looked over my shoulder as I pulled my silk blue tank top into place, setting my hands on my hips, black silk boxers. Shippou was grabbing his ankles and looking up at the ceiling absently. He chuckled suddenly and fell over backwards.

“When I first saw her… I guess I knew. She was beautiful… Covered in blood, panting from exertion, and foxfire dancing across her tail’s… Gods she was beautiful.”
I laughed and flopped down onto my stomach beside him.
“Okay. What did you say to her?”
“Heh! I didn’t. She didn’t even notice me at first. She was being hunted by the Northern Army when I saw her. Inuyasha and I were trying to help her because she had a litter with her.”
I blinked.
“A litter?”
“Aa. They weren’t hers but she was a female and motherly instincts in female youkia run deep.”
“Oh.”
“But after it was over, she deformed and… Well, you could say she looks allot like Sesshomaru, with boob’s and sexy curves.”
He blushed as he stared up at the ceiling. I laughed and shoved him. He snorted and glared at me.
“What!?”
“I can’t believe you actually said that!”
“She does! She could be his twin! Other than the fact that she fucking gorgeous and has a tail, she could be Sesshomaru’s twin.”

I laughed and rolled onto my back, folding my arms across my stomach.
“So how’d Inuyasha’s life go?”
He turned to look at me, and I closed my eyes, turning to face him before opening my eyes again.
“You really miss them, huh?”
“Hell, for me it was only a seven years ago that I left you guy’s!”
He turned to look back at the ceiling.
“Well, after the wish was made, Inuyasha went to the West and made amends with Sesshomaru, like he promised he would. Turns out, Sesshomaru accepted the offer of peace and Inuyasha lived in the West for a few years. But he always returned to Musashi to drop by and make sure we were all alive and well. Sango and Miroku had a handful of litter’s, Sango spent more time pregnant than anything else!”
The kitsune laughed fondly as I watched him stare at the ceiling, his eyes moving as memories fluttered behind his minds eye. For a moment, I envied him.

“You know, Inuyasha found someone.”
“Oh yeah?”
I asked, my eyes lighting up as Shippou turned to me with a smile.
“Oh yeah, she was hanyou too.”
“Really?”
I asked, smiling and feeling my heart swell. Shippou chuckled.
“Though you’d get a kick out of that. She was an inu-hanyou, too. Ironic huh?”
Laughing I rolled onto my side and hugged him. Shippou pulled me against him, offering his body for me to snuggle against and get comfortable. I sighed and rubbed my cheeks into his warm chest.
“What was her name?”
“Kyoko.”
“Fitting.”
“ ;She was as beautiful as she was deadly, Kagome.”
“What did she look like?”
“Spiked white hair and neon green eyes. She was a tiny little thing, but man did she know how to throw a punch!”
I smiled as Shippou punched the air above him with a fond laugh.
“Was she polite and nice?”
“When the time called for it. Kyoko was young when Inuyasha found her, she was wounded too. So he scored big points with her right off the bat. But because he was older, and not so hot-headed after you disappeared, he found Kyoko’s often childish game’s and fits to be more amusing than annoying. But that was only when Kyoko was in a playful mood. Believe me, she had mood swings like Inuyasha! But when the damn mutt realized he actually liked liked her, he didn’t so much push her away as he pulled her towards him, making it obvious that he wanted her. Needless to say, when Kyoko finally let him have what he wanted, a year or so later, Inuyasha walked around for days with a perma-grin.”

I sighed and closed my eyes.
“I would have liked to meet her.”
“You’d had loved her, Kagome. Inuyasha and I told her all about you, and she so very badly wanted to meet you as well. She said that if she ever got the chance, she wanted to fight you in a fair fight. She said that any woman able to balance out Inuyasha’s temper, and the evil of the world all at once, at such a young age, while harboring and purifying the Shikon no Tama, was a woman she had no problem with; human or not.”

I smiled and opened my eyes.
“She was always asking about you too, and Inuyasha actually told her about you and Kikyo. It surprised me actually, when he did it. Because he didn’t cry. When before, he’d cry like a baby every time someone mentioned your’s and Kikyo’s name.”
Smiling, I felt my nose tingle.
“That’s because he grew up, Shippou-kun. He moved on, and Kyoko healed his heart.”
Shippou turned onto his side and held me tightly.
“He never stopped thinking about you, and Kyoko knew the love he held for you, knew that she couldn’t compete with it, it was his way to keep you alive. So she helped him cope, and asked for his favorite memories of you.”

He chuckled and kissed my forehead.
“She loved him, didn’t she, Shippou-kun?”
“Unconditionally.”
“And he loved her?”
“Hai.”
“Then I’m happy for him.”

“They had a son, named Kiyoshi, after a while. Though Kyoko didn’t have dog ears, Kiyoshi came out looking exactly like his father. When battle finally took Inuyasha at the age of two hundred and fifty-six, Kyoko and Kiyoshi fled to the Western Lands. Sesshomaru took them in while sending me to the Ningenkai to wait for you.”

I lifted my head suddenly.
“Wait for me?”
“Hai. Sesshomaru and Kiyoshi wait for your to return to the Western Lands. Your nephew is eager to meet you.”
Blinking, I could only stare at him, before I screamed and punched him dead in the shoulder.
“BAKA-DA!! HOW DARE YOU WAIT THIS LONG TO TELL ME I HAD A NEWPHEW!!! I SHOULD SKIN YOU ALIVE SHIPPOU!! GET BACK HERE YOU STUPID LITTLE KITSUNE!!”

“Kyaa!! KAGOME!! Please, you’re overreacting!! NO, PLEASE NOT THE TAIL!!!”

~~

“Sesshomaru… Is that you?”
The demon in the mirror rubbed his left temple. His glossy white hair was in a ponytail at the base of his neck, and the powerful youkia wore a black business suit, his face clean of demonic markings.
“Oh gods, it is you!”
I giggled and pushed the mirror away from me.
“Oh gods! This is so surreal! Where’s my nephew, I want to see him! Can I see him, pretty please!!”

The demon lord opened his eyes and regarded me with patience.
“You have not changed, Keeper.”
“Hey! I’m only twenty-two! What do you expect? Become a prude like you in my old age? Sorry to break it to you, but I’m gonna be a sweet, funny and cheerful old lady.”
“Frightening, I’m sure.”
He sighed, his eyes narrowed in annoyance. I giggled and winked.
“I missed you too, Sesshomaru-sama! How’s life in the Maikai?”
“This Sesshomaru fight’s for his territory.”
“Does that mean you’re entering the Tournament.”
“Naturally.”
I giggled and rolled my eyes.
“I should have known.”
“I expect you will also participate?”
“Naturally.”
I mimicked his tone and adopted his mask with scary similarity. Sesshomaru blinked, then frowned sharply.
“This Sesshomaru will appreciate you never doing that again.”
“Sure thing, as soon as you show me my nephew!”
The demon lord rolled his eyes, then passed the mirror in a blur of color before a handsome young man, the mirror of Inuyasha’s face looked back at me. The collar of a black hakama caught my eye, and the green flecks in the iris and the soft blush of freckles on his nose and cheek’s were the only thing that differed him from his father.
“Hello Kiyoshi, do you know who I am.”
“I was raised on your stories, Honored Keeper.”
His voice was soft, and it sounded so odd coming from the boy who looked so much like his father. But the eyes were different, the boy may have looked identical to Inuyasha, but Kiyoshi’s eyes looked more like Miroku’s eyes in the way they were kind, wise and playful.
“Please, Kiyo-chan, call me Kagome.”
“I would be honored.”
He said with a playful grin. His voice as almost feminine in its softness, but the baritone undertone rang through enough to lift the soft voice with hidden strength.

“I cannot wait to meet you personally, Kagome-obasan. My mother and father spoke very fondly of you and your power.”
“The feeling is mutual, Kiyo-chan. Which brings me to a very interesting question.”
“Yes, Kagome-obasan?”
“Are you strong enough?”
“H-hai?”
“How strong?”
“Obasan?”
“Answer the question, nephew.”
This boy holds the soul of the hanyou… He will be strong. He will prove to us his power.
“I can hold my own in a spar with Sesshomaru-sama...”
“Hmn.”
Suddenly Sesshomaru was glaring at me.
“Are you insinuating something, Keeper?”
I giggled and grinned at him, the emotions within me swaying and crashing like a tidal wave; my mood swung at a familiar break neck speed.
“What? Oh, absolutely not!”
I waved at him; his eyes narrowed.
“Do you wish to prove to this Sesshomaru that you are able to beat me in a fair fight?”
“I would love to, I‘m glad you asked!”
“Excellent.”
Snickering I winked at him.
“Well then, my Lord. I look forward to seeing you at the Tournament.”
“I am certain that in the end, we will face each other for the title. Anything less from you will bring disappointment.”
“You remember those words.”
“Hmn.”

I set the mirror down and turned to Shippou.
“Looks like its time to train, Shippou-kun.”
“Ah, and I know the perfect sparring partner.”
“Do you, now?”
“Aa. Grab Souta and meet me at Genkai’s.”
“Usual spot?”
“Yup.”
“Meet you there.”
