Chapter Four: Training
~~

The sun was barely coming up over the mountain top, casting the field in shadow’s as it lit the forest on fire, splashing the brown in scarlet and gold.
“Beautiful.”
I whispered. Frost made the forest sparkle under the morning rays of sunlight.
“Anyway, we aren’t here to obsess over the beauty of the morning. We’re here for a reason!”
I glared at Yusuke before turning towards him, a friend of his named Kazuma, as well as Kurama and Hiei.

Souta stood up behind me, polishing his Chakram.
“Well, we’re waiting on Shippou-kun. What else is their to do?”
“Stupid question.”
Yusuke mumbled with a grin as he rolled his shoulders and flexed his arms. I blinked, then smiled.
“Aww, are you showing off, Urameshi?”
“You wish, babe.”
He answered with a wider grin and a wink. I rolled my eyes and pulled my arms above my head to stretch before winking and pawing at him.
“Ooh, kitty-kitty.”
Yusuke growled as he stepped forward. I snickered and dropped my arms into a casual stance, centering my weight and bending my knee’s.
“We have something to settle, girly.”
“Bring it on, fuck-face.”
He shot forward, blurring out of my eyesight. I back skipped as he landed before me and lifted my arms in time to block and twist gracefully to the side. He followed with a low kick and I countered by rooting my foot and taking the blow, while bringing my elbow hard onto the back of his skull. He snarled and rolled back, rubbing his head as he leapt up to his feet.
“Damn! That hurt!”
I chuckled and rushed, sending a spiraling wave of energy at him, forcing him to dodge. As predicted, he leapt aside and I back swung, sending another blast that caught him dead in the chest, blowing him back into the forest. I smirked and opened my mouth when suddenly a black blur registered in my peripheral vision and my instincts told me to move. I twisted, pulling the air with me as I exerted my energy, using it as a shield as Hiei blurred around me, slicing against my barrier; looking for a weak spot. I continued to twist and twirl, continuing our dance as he attacked.

I twisted, lurched and weaved gracefully, shooting out blasts of energy at every opening, which he evaded with quick reflexes and impressive blocks. Suddenly the Fire demon backed off, and I found myself surrounded by searching vines with deadly thorns and fangs plants with hungry mouth’s.

I back skipped, pushing my energy into my feet and connected with the earth, purifying all that grew within the field. The plants, as quickly as they overpopulated, shattered in silent glass, glowing pink as the youki was purified.

Instinct screamed that I move again as a vine whip with dangerous thorns came out of no where. I hissed as a strike landed on my cheek, left shoulder and right calf. Leaping back, I erected a barrier and began to heal myself, ignoring those around me.

“Spirit Gun!”
The blast screamed towards me, growing in size as it gathered speed. I opened my eyes as I chanted, strengthening the barrier around me as I quickened my healing process. When the enormous blast of energy struck my barrier, electrical discharge black lashed into my face and encircled my body. I screamed through locked jaws as I held my concentration, pushing the pain to the back of my mind. I slowly relaxed each muscle until I was lax, completely in the middle of the electrical discharge of my own attack.

It was like two car’s crashing into one another, and the electrical discharge were sparks as metal scraped together.

Opening my eyes, I felt my energy curl, tighten and spring in the pit of my stomach. The lines of energy wove through my vein’s, through my heart and flooding my mind. I arched my spine as the space in ecstasy as bubble’s of my magic rose to the surface.
“Heh, that’s right…”
I glared challengingly at Yusuke as I my power crested, shoving hard against the inside of the barrier; like a pressurized bomb, the Barrier around me burst.
No… Yes! We have longed to use this power! You have not let us for years!

No! Please!
My soul ached, the pressure only easing with the more energy I put into the attack. Oh, by the gods it felt good, like stretching my body after being curled up inside a box for the past seven years.
Oh, yes…
I tossed my head back, shaking it in denial and curling my arms as my body was lifted into the air.
Save them… Spare them…
Why must we, they are nothing to us?
My brother… My friends… Spare them…
The blast leveled the mountain behind me, shattering it into dust as I redirected the flow the moment I was given control back. The flow of power bent and bowed out away from the demon’s, my brother and the hanyou just in time, whip lashing backwards with such a force that the mountain, helpless to the attack, had shattered into nothing. When the dust cleared I rocked on my feet then fell to my knees. I shuttered as the voices took on a deafening tone. My eyes shook, unable to focus on anything other than the jewel crying out for blood, the souls within me vying for control and power.
Much to learn…
That single sentence broke the spell and the voices died out quickly, my fingers lessened on my scalp, my eyes focused on the grass under my feet, the smoldering excess power that clung to everything in the aftermath.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! You alright?”
Yusuke was suddenly kneeling before me, grabbing my shoulder’s and making me look up at him.
“I’m fine… Are you okay?”
My eyes flashed pink as I looked at his energy supply and flow. The attack had been triggered by him, it was directed at him.
Our target… He will prove to be difficult to kill.
I shook my head clear again as I lifted my hands to touch his arm’s.
“Are you kidding? You’re as white as a ghost, without a trace of energy in your system and you’re asking me if I’m alright?”
Nodding I reached up to touch my forehead, my flesh burned as I circulated my energy, forcing the Shikon no Tama to replenish my supply until I as able to restore it on my own. It conceded easily as my heart lurched, adjusting to the thicker blood as the jewel dissolved and became apart of my DNA and blood.

Yusuke moved and scooped me into his chest, easily hefting me up and turning.
“At any rate, you need some meat and rest.”
“Meat?”
“Yeah.”
He grumbled and began to walk, I blinked and let my cheek rest against his meaty shoulder. He was warm and the energy he possessed was soft and inviting. If it had a color, it’d be blue, as warm and as brilliant as electricity. I relaxed against him, my fingers moving to ghost over my chest, above my heart. It lurched one last time, the Shikon no Tama making a complete cycle through my system. My mind grew heavy and dull, sluggish as the healing process began to take effect.

“Yusuke… What happened? Where is everyone?”
“Kurama and Hiei went on ahead to inform Genkai that you’ll be staying the night. You’re fox and his mate took your brother home ten minutes ago. Don’t you remember? The fox talked to you about something.”
I shook my head, the movement surreal and strange.
“I don’t remember.”
“Hmn. Anyway, we’re here.”
I opened my eyes to see warm brown wood and a soft buzz of noise. Closing my eyes I didn’t open them again until Yusuke’s baritone voice whispered into my ear.
“Kagome, wake up.”
“Why?”
“Food.”
“I̵ 7;m not hungry.”
“You’re eating, if I have to feed it to you.”
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
I asked, inhaling deeply as I pushed myself up. I blinked as I noticed I was laying down on a futon, wearing a cotton white yukata.
“Who changed me?”

“Yukina.”
I glared at him.
“Yukina?”
“Aa, Hiei’s baby sister. Don’t tell anyone, not everyone knows.”
“Why?”
“Just shut up and eat already.”
He set a tray on my lap and I looked down to see a bowl of egg drop soup, a saucer of rice and a slab of grilled meat, it was still steaming. My stomach suddenly grumbled and I winced, resisting the urge to curl in on myself. Lifting my hand, I grabbed the chop sticks and trembled as I tried to pick up a ball of rice. I lifted the ball to my lips, my fingers trebling so bad I almost dropped the sticks. However, the rice did fall onto my chest. I threw the chop sticks down with a snarl.
“Damnit!”
“Easy.”
Yusuke chuckled, as he reached over and plucked the rice ball off my chest without touching me and set it down on the tray. Picking up my chop sticks with a renewed a bite, holding a hand under it, Yusuke lead it up to my mouth.

I gave him a dry, humorless glare.
“If you’re still trying to impress me, Yusuke, I’ll kill you.”
He gave me an equally annoyed and pissed off glare.
“Shut up! I’m trying to be nice, you little shit!”
My eyebrow twitched. Yusuke cursed darkly and glared off to the side.
“Uh, actually, perhaps I might be better suited to help, Higurashi-san.”
We both looked up to see Kurama and Hiei. The Fire Apparition was glaring at me as he made his way to the open shoji door, sitting down near the frame and crossing his arms.

Yusuke set the chop stick down with a grumble as he stood.
“Yeah, whatever, I got better things to do than baby-sit.”
I snarled and picked up the chopsticks again, focusing as I glared hatred at my fingers as they trembled harder with the increasing pressure I used to keep hold of the damp pieces of sticks. Relaxing, I hissed in annoyance as the trembling increased despite the added and reduced pressure of my fingers
“Stupid….”
I snarled, closing my eyes and letting my hands drop to my lap.

We warned the Keeper… Resisting warrants exertion, unnecessarily.
“Shut up…”
You resist us even now, Keeper?
“I said: shut up.”
“Pardon?”
My eyes shot open, and I glared at Kurama, my annoyance with myself and Yusuke boiling inside me with such a fury, I almost lost control. He picked up the chop sticks and cut off a piece of meat, before holding it up to my lips.
“You must give yourself time, you exerted allot of power back their. I am surprised you are even conscious now.”
“Then you don’t know me very well.”
I snapped and ate the chunk of meat grumpily, crossing my arms. Kurama chuckled softly.
“How stubborn you are.”
“No, I’m just pissed off.”
I growled softly, glaring at him from the corner of my eyes. He held up his hands with a smile.
“Alright then, pissed off. Would you mind if I inquire as to why?”
I glanced at Hiei to see him watching us from the corner of his eyes, my temper already short; I glared at him openly. His eyes narrowed before he turned his gaze outside.
“If I can ask you why you’re interested.”
Turning back to Kurama, I was surprised when he stuffed a mouthful of rice into my mouth without much warning. He tilted his head at me pleasantly as I chewed and swallowed, eyes narrowed and eyes sharp.
“Of course you may ask, however I must apologize for my friend Hiei. He is just as curious about you as I am.”

I swept my tongue through my mouth to catch any extra rice, and swallowed thoughtfully, my eyebrows rising when I came to a sudden understanding of the situation around me. Swallowing, I frowned at him.
“Curious about me?”
“That’s right.”
He said evenly as he gathered another mouthful of rice. I ate it a soon as it was in range, chewing the lovely food as my stomach settled with contentment. I hummed after I swallowed.
“Hiei and I are curious as about the comment you made about the barriers, around the three worlds.”
I blinked.
“Oh, and what are your questions?”
“Well I-.”
“How old are you really?”
Hiei spoke, glaring at me again. I watched him for a moment, then lifted my nose.
“If you are a demon, surely you already know the answer to that question. Of course, if you don’t, you aren’t as powerful and smart as I thought you were.”
His surprise was almost comical, and his blush was so cute too. I crossed my arms as I looked at the ceiling.
“If you must know, when I turned fifteen, a well on the Shrine Complex took me back five hundred years into the past, where I was destined to safe a hanyou boy from suspended death, save the world and purge it of evil. I was only fifteen then, and I stand before you only twenty-two. Granted its such a short time, I can assure you that I am much wiser than your average woman! Not only that but when it comes to energy, I’m bit of a genius. Anything that comes from the soul, any magic or anything energy based, I can learn to control and one day posses, if I wanted to.”

Hiei snorted.
“Does that mean you can control youki as well?”
I pinned him with a dark glare.
“Lets put it this way, Hiei. That tattoo on your arm; with Dark Art Magic surrounding it, I’m familiar with it. If I wanted to, I could control it. Completely.”
Both Kurama and Hiei looked at me with wide eyes. I snickered.
“I fought evil; evil is my equal and opposite. Would you not think that Dark Arts would be one of the first evil magics I would learn? Of course, the Dragon of the Darkness Flame is only one of the many attacks from the Dragon’s of Hell. For instance, the Dragon Twister is a far superior and more complex attack than the Dragon of Darkness Flame.”

Feeling pride swell in my chest at the disbelieving stares of the demon’s, I asked for another bite of meat. Kurama complied instantly, blushing as he apologized.
“No, Kurama-san. I should apologize. Having you feed me like this, its very embarrassing, to both of us. I will make it up to you, I promise.”

The red head smiled and waved.
“I am honored, Lady Priestess.”
“I’m sure. Now, any other questions?”
“How were you able to erect the barriers?”
Hiei asked again, and Kurama glanced over his shoulder with a pouted glare. I smiled and shook my head.
“Like all magic, it works best if feminine and masculine magic are used together. It was only the simple matter of finding opposing energies that both opposed and attracted. Like the holy powers of a priestess and the magic of a priest, or the masculine energy of Taiyoukia and an equally powerful feminine energy of a Youkia Sorceress.”
“Hm.”
Hiei answered, still watching me. Kurama fed me another ball of rice, and I swallowed before resuming my speech.
“The idea was mine, but it was the Taiyoukia of the West who-.”
“Taiyoukia of the West?”
Both Hiei and Kurama gasped and I blinked.
“You know of him?”
“The Reikai rank him as a S-class Demon!”
Kurama gasped, glancing back at Hiei. The Fire demon hadn’t taken his eyes off me.
“What?”
“Nothing, continue please.”
Kurama pleaded softly, offering me a chunk of meat.
“The Taiyoukia of the West was essential if the plan were to work. As it stood back then, he founded and created the world Maikai.”
“He is not King.”
Hiei mumbled as he looked back out the Shoji door’s. I followed his line of sight.
“It was never his intention.”
The fire demon looked back at me then, his red eyes hallow and dry as he stared at me. I smiled fondly at him.
“Sesshomaru would like you, Hiei, Fire Apparition. You possess quiet strength, and you calculate even in content and peace. I’m afraid that I like you as well, and thus, I count you as friend. Even if you do not return the favor.”

“You loyalty surprises me. With demon’s no less.”
Kurama whispered as he removed the tray from my lap to his own, slicing through the meat into sizeable chunks. I watched him idly.
“Demons are not so different from human’s. We both have hearts, soul’s and we feel pain, sorrow and sometimes regret. In all my time spent within the House of Moon, while its walls were erect within the human world, I learned many things of demon’s.”
“Such as?”
Hiei snapped softly, his eyes narrowing slightly as they watched me. Kurama picked up a cube of meat and held it up for me. Without breaking my gaze with Hiei, I grabbed the red-head’s wrist and took the bite.
“Tell me fire demon, why does your curiosity boarder on obsession?”
My eyes flashed pink, his youki flow visible to me. It centered around his forehead, and not his stomach, as with most energy sources. The amount of energy running through the little demon surprised me, and that it was centered on his forehead was no less of a surprise.
“Obsession?”
“I sense both of your curiosity, as I sense all things with energy. I am able to see, within myself, the reflection of your desire’s and thoughts through your youki alone. Does this frighten you?”
I raised my eyes to the fire demon, letting the power within me surface enough to change the color of my eyes, visibly highlighting the pale strands of black in my hair.

“If I say yes?”
Hiei asked, no emotion crossing his face or eyes, but the youki within him trembled slightly. He was afraid.
“Then I would call you wise.”
“Hm.”
Kurama held up another piece of meat, and I touched his wrist as I took the bite.
“What of you, Kurama? Would you care to enlighten me of the two separate youki that cycle within your body. I sense a kitsune, but your exterior and interior are human. How is it your soul is splint in twine, without damage, allowing you the power of youki and human energy?”

The red head smiled fondly, setting the chop sticks down as I removed my fingertips. Each touch on the red head, drew out blueprints in my mind, systematic layouts of his youki and human energy, how he used them and the possibility of usage that he had yet to reveal to me.

“I’m sure it would be best to describe it as an alternate ego.”
:It is a pleasure, and honor, Keeper. I am Youko.:
The red head closed his eyes before opening them again, the emerald depths flashing gold for an instant. In that instant the red head was no longer human; in that instant the man before me was Youko, a silver Kistune. A rare breed once said to have fallen from the moon itself, called forth by Holy Priests to fight demons hailed by Dark Priests to fight demon called from Hell.

It was only an instant, a split second that this knowledge was bestowed to me, but it was enough.

Suddenly my stomach lurched, bile rose in the back of my throat. My skin shivered as my body temperature dropped to a dangerous level. Perspiration gathered over my skin in a damp sheet. I couldn’t focus, my vision blurred at the edges, threatening to blind me.

I hissed silently as I brought my hands up to my head. The voices pitched to a staggering level, swamping me so quickly, I couldn’t breath for a second.
“Kagome-san? Are you alright?”
A weight dropped onto my shoulder, and my body lurched under that touch, my stomach sloshing with it. I gagged and smacked a hand over my mouth, tipping backwards with the sudden gesture.
“Kagome-san!”
A constrictive pressure surrounded me and suddenly the world narrowed drastically.
We will take over with your weakness, Keeper…
..never strong enough… weakness within her soul…
The Keeper in unfit….
…punish her… punish those she loves…stupidity shown now and then…
…hanyou…
Inu no hanyou… stupidity… weakness…
“…much to learn, little Keeper… I will pray for you…”
Once again the spell broke, my eyes snapped open, wide in lucidity. My stomach rumbled and went still, my skin loosened and a tingle of warmth crawled up my spine.
“Kagome-san, can you hear me?”
Something warm pressed, feather soft against the skin of my cheek and my eyes locked on emerald stones. My breath caught as those eyes flashed gold, my vision sparked by the reaction and bleeding pink in hue, igniting the pattern of aura that was housed within his body. Two separate energy trails overlapped, matching in perfect synchrony, yet flawed at every turn. My eyes narrowed and my human vision returned with a pulsed flash.

I screwed my eyes shut and dug my heel’s into the aching sockets.
“What…?”
“Kagome-san, are you alright?”
His arm tightened around my waist, his thigh’s appearing under me, so surreal in the instant I realized it. My shoulder against his chest was suddenly sensitive to his breathing, and I found myself timing his breathing, each intake and exhale was noted and memorized instinctually.
“I’m alright, Kurama-kun…”
I whispered shakily, tearing my mind away from him and looking within me. Inhaling deeply, I released it, a soft breath at a time, until my muscles relaxed one by one, my heart slowly humping within my ribcage, and my mind was able to focus.

“Kagome-san?”
“I… Need to rest, I’m sorry…”
I whispered, letting my hands drop to my chest, releasing a breath with the action, so I didn’t black out. I inhaled steadily, and risked opening an eye and looking up at him. His emerald eyes were worried and reflected his worry like beacon’s of light in a blackout.

Sighing I closed my eye again.
“Could… Could I trouble you, Kurama-kun, to take me to my bed?”
I felt the muscles under me bunch and roll gracefully, rising slowly as I hissed in pain. My equilibrium tilting in protest and threatening to drag me into a word of numb darkness.
“Ite! S-stop!”
Tears gathered behind my eyes as I grabbed the clothing over his chest. My stomach churned and rose to my throat. I swallowed quickly and repeatedly, my head throbbing heavily, a lancing pain rippling across the top of my head.
“Uh-!”
He froze, his body in a half-rise, carrying my weight; in perfect stillness. My lips twitched with a smirk as the new knowledge sliced through the haze enough to cause a rift, allowing me to hold onto that feeling of lucidity and pull from it.

“Elevation… Don’t move so fast…”
I hissed softly, the sound of my own voice pounding inside my ears.
:You are safe, Keeper. Tell us what you need.:
His voice rippled across my mind, like disturbed water, pushing back the voice’s and their pounding pressure.
“Don’t… Don’t come any closer.”
I warned him, holding up a barrier against the opening he’d created within my mind, allowing him a window, but not a passage. His surprise kissed the width of my barrier and I smiled.
“I… I dare not.”
:If I am daring?:
Smiling, I felt his body begin to rise again, the muscles gliding softly under his flesh and clothes as he reached full height. I sighed when he stilled for a moment, then turned towards my futon.
:What has happened? I am curious…:
“Such is the nature of a fox…”
I whispered, using up valuable air to speak. I felt his understanding and amusement glide across my barrier, like a claw tracing a line across flesh in wonder.
:How true.:
His laughter was subtle, the indication in the amused rumblings that transferred through the barrier and into my mind. For once the voices stilled in silent curiously. Their attention was suddenly eerily directed at my barrier and the window of the dual souls on the other side.

I felt myself look over my shoulder, a chill running down my sine to see faceless grins and eyes. Ice pooled at the base of my skull as a silky brush of ice rolled across my shoulder like a breath of air.
Release us, Keeper… We are curious.
With out warning or thought I closed the window, and closed my mental eyes, jerking my mind away from their presence and focusing on his hands sliding across my back as he lowered me to the futon.

His reaction was evident in his movement, his grace faltered as his fingers jerked, his skillful hands nearly dropping me. His hand smoothed up to hold the back of my head as he gently finished laying me down.
“Is that better, Kagome-san? Forgive-.”
“Arigatou…”
I opened my eyes and looked around the room, spotting the Fire demon. He kept his previous post, but he was standing now, his arms crossed as he watched me curiously.

Turning back to the fox I smiled.
“Will you find Shippou-kun for me? I must see him.”
“Of course, Kagome-san.”
“Arigatou.”
I smiled and closed my eyes…
