Chapter 6: Memories of Little Hiei
The night passed rather well for Hiei, Botan and Rin. Kurama, Kuwabara, and Yusuke weren't as lucky. There were only three rooms that were mostly intact and they took them. None of them knew they had the rooms of Sango, Kikyou and Kagome, at least not at the moment. Sango's room was occupied by Kurama, Kuwabara had Kikyou's room and Yusuke got Kagome's room. It might have been fate they got those rooms, since they each had something in common with the former occupants. Kurama had Sango's intellect and ability to get rid of emotions if the battle was serious enough. Kuwabara had Kikyou's heart and they each held their codes or rules in high regard. Yusuke had Kagome's quick temper and way of fighting if the battle was personal enough.
Each room was dimmed from it's original splendor. The carvings in the wall were chipped and were stripped of their gold leaflets. The fireplaces were caved in and smashed, along with most of the windows. The marble floor had long ago lost it's polished look and original color, and some tiles were smashed in. All of the dressers, beds, pictures were either broken, smashed in, charred, torn or all of the above. It made them all wonder what the castle would have looked like in it's prime. But they knew, it must have been magnificent.
That night, Kurama was plagued with dreams of a woman with a fighter's body, sobbing over her losses. The woman's face haunted him in all of his dreams and would give him no peace. Her face was all he could remember, and one scene. The scene was at an old feudal castle, the old lord was dead at the hand's of his son. But, that wasn't what made it memorable. The dead bodies of taijiya's was part ot it, but not the thing that stood out the most. There was the woman's face that haunted him, only she was laying on top of a young boy that looked like her. The young boy had a handful of long arrows sticking out of his chest and the woman also had a handful of arrows in her back, but she also had a sickle chain sticking out of her back as well. The fact that they were both dead and created such a hauntingly beautiful picture stuck out in his mind.
Kuwabara's dream was much the same. Only he saw a miko wearing red hakama and a white haori be attacked by a demon with long silver hair and wearing all red. His cold, evil voice stuck out in his mind as he called her ugly and stupid and took off with a jewel, leaving her fatally wounded. Then, he saw a village buring and many villagers saying that InuYasha stole the jewel. The miko ran off towards a large tree and shot a single arrow at the demon, stricking him in the heart. The jewel fell out of his hand as he accused her of betraying him. His voice was hurt and much nicer sounding this time. Kuwabara immediately knew that the demon before had to be the imposter. He saw the priestess die seconds after the demon, and be burned- as she had wished.
Yusuke's night was different- he had no dreams. But all night he could feel someone holding him and giving him a sense of love and security. It was something he had never really had. It unnnerved him and comforted him at the same time. The thing that made this night seem disturbing, was the light melody that played throughout the night. A melody that had words he knew somehow. Maybe a lullabye from his childhood? It didn't matter to him, not at this time. Right before he closed his eyes, he could have sworn he saw a jewel encrusted music box open and playing the melody. But, when he blinked- it was gone.
The next morning, they told the other's their experiences and soon learned they had seen some memories of the past. Rin didn't know about that part of InuYasha and Kikyou's relationship, or that part of Sango's past, but she knew something like that had happened. This made their night's seem better, if it helped them get stronger, but the things they saw, would never be forgotten. They had no food, so they carried on after the complaints of Kuwabara and Yusuke.
After an hour of wandering around upstairs, they realzed that, that was all the memories they were going to get there. The same for the first floor, so they went outside. Once again, at the entrance to the castle- they were drawn into another memory. This one, being the most vivid one they will ever have.
A great youkai army could be seen coming up to the castle, where another army was waiting. At the front was the lesser generals and Sesshoumaru-sama, Kikyou, Sango and Kagome could be seen nowhere. The youkai army stopped just outside the gates, where each army began sizing each other up. Almost upon a spoken argeement, they attacked at the same time. The swordsmen and close range fighters were attacking at the front, while the archers and long range fighters stayed back and volleyed the enemy.
The scene shifted to a while later where all form of rank had been discarded. That was when Sesshoumaru-sama made his presence known with a sweep of Toukijin. The sweep alone killed five youkai, while the power killed nearly hundreds more. There was a line going through the enemy army where Toukijin unleashed it's power. Soon after, three more attacks like that followed before it became impossible for Sesshoumaru-sama to use it without killing his own army. That is when Sango and Kikyou stepped in.
Both of them attacked at the same time. Kikyou fired an arrow at the same time Sango launched her boomerang. They each made a small dent in the army. On the boomerang's return path Kikyou fired another arrow to kill off those that had been lucky enough to avoid Sango's weapon. After catching her boomerang, Sango launched it again as she pulled out her katana and joined in the fighting with her troops. Kikyou stayed back and would attack the youkai who were trying to sneak up on her troops, while launching an attack in sync with Sango's. They were all making a dent in the opposing army, when the memory shifted again.
Sesshoumaru, Sango, and Kikyou shouted out an order and their army pulled back to the sides. The opposing army stopped fighting, in confusion as to what their enemy was doing. By the time they realised they were being attacked, it was too late. A giant pink dragon came and either ate them or purified them into oblivion. Not even their souls were able to escape. It made a return trip and took out at least half of the opposing army before it returned to Kagome. Kagome, in turn, disappeared because she was devouring it. Both armies snapped out of their amazement before they started attacking again.
Soon enough, Kagome returned and began attacking with her closest friends. However, she was very weakened from devouring her dragon again and didn't see an attack before it was too late. All she saw was the sword stick out from where her heart would have been. Everything stopped to see this unfold. Slowly, the sword retracted and she turned around to see the general of the opposing army. He gave her a sadistic smirk before slashing her from her left hip to her right shoulder. She fell backwards as her soul appeared to separate from her body. The Shikon no Tama fell to the ground as her soul retracted back into her, leaving her dead on the ground and unknown to anyone, all of her dragon tattos disappeared. As soon as the general picked it up, he was cut into three pieces by the three different attacks that had hit him. Kikyou had shot him, Sango had thrown her boomerang at him and Sesshouamru-sama had used his poison whip on him.
But the three attacks had broken the Shikon no Tama into six pieces. Five pieces had been scattered and somehow the castle appeared to catch fire. Only one piece remained and it landed on Kagome. It was absorbed into her as one dragon tattoo reappeared on her arm. She stood up as the wound closed itself and the blood retracted back into her as the opposing army ran off.
Sesshoumaru-sama, Kikyou, Sango, and Kagome looked thoughtful as they watched the enchanted fire burn their home before they walked off to find the rest of their family and search once again for the shikon no kakera.
Everyone looked sad and thoughtful at what they had just seen. They had just seen the famed Shi Karura and learned a little bit of Hiei's past. And Hiei finally knew why his oneesan never came back for him. She had something more important to do, but that still didn't ease the pain of knowing you were second best to someone you loved dearly. Rin was the one who broke the silence, "you know Hiei.. Aneue did come back for you not even a week after this battle.. But, you weren't there. All she found was all the mementos she gave you and Rin-chan told her what happened. She searched for years trying to find the band of theives that took you in.. But, you had once again left before she got there. And she murdered them when she learned they forced you to leave.. She's still trying to find you, you know."
Her words shocked Hiei, but before anyone could ask her anything, she was already walking back to the safe village. Upon watching her walking away, everyone thought she looked taller and her words were much more serious than they had been earlier. Wakling away form the barriers, Botan summoned a portal back to Reikai, where they related their experiences to Koenma. Soon after doing so, they were sent back to the Ningenkai were they continued their training for the Dark Tournament.
What they didn't know was that this Dark Tournament was going to be the best one yet. That some unexpected visitors would drop in on their fights and prove to the world just who the Shi Karura were, are, and will always be.
