STARTING OVER
Woa! *dodges flying objects* jeeze, that last chapter sure got a reaction ne? *Hides around under computer desk as pointy things rain down from readers* ok ok I get it, calm down. Man, you guys sure do get excited easily. It was just one of the main characters and Kagome's only chance at happiness…*sees the look on readers' faces and runs for cover* ummm ya, before I get to the story I have to give you guys a song I found in a book im reading. It's from `Pearls of Lutra' by Brain Jacques. Great author, you should check out his books, they are about intelligent fighting rodents who live in an abbey. Better than it sounds…really. Anywho, on with the song, btw if this isn't foreshadowing I don't know what is.

Fare you well upon your journey,
To the bright lands far away,
Where beside the peaceful rivers,
You may linger any day.
In the forest warm at noontide,
See the flowers bloom in glades,
Meet the friends gone before you,
To the calm of quiet shades.
There you'll wait, O my beloved,
Never knowing want or care,
And when I have seen my seasons,
We will walk together there.

Ok, now that the song about death is out of the way I can move onto what you all came here for; the fanfic! Two new characters in this one, the one I mentioned last chapter and a new one. I don't own didly, so don't sue.

CHAPTER 14
Around midnight Kagome into the rooms they shared. Her face was blank, but her eyes held determination. Shippou rose from the couch where he had been sitting with Reiya. She glanced at him then started to rise. Her partner, Kiama, grabbed her wrist and shook her head causing her amber hair to spill over her shoulders.
"Don't, it doesn't concern you."
Reiya adopted a pained expression, then sat down again. Kiama caught the look and pulled her closest friend into a warm hug. Reiya hugged back while worrying her bottom lip. What happened to back there? Why had Aoi taken them to leave? Why had Aoi even listened to her request and brought Kiama along. She shook her head and settled back down on the couch, watching his receding back as he chased after the silent goddess.
Shippou entered Kagome's room a few paces after she had, and was stunned by what she was doing. Kagome had unsheathed her sword and was carving kanji into her hardwood floor.
"Shi, what are you doing?" (Shi is her code name.)
Kagome, never looking up from her work, answered in her normal detached voice.
"I'm going to ascend."
Shippou's eyes widened.
"No! If…You…I…NO! You cant do that!"
Kagome spared him a passing glance.
" I will do what I must."
Shippou was close to tears. Frantically, he called for Sota over his shoulder. He then slumped in the doorframe and asked in a distressed voice.
"Why? Why now?"
Shippou buried his head in his hands and shook with suppressed sobs. His head snapped up suddenly, his eyes glittering with unshed tears.
"It's the jaganshi isn't it?! You are ascending for the fucking jaganshi!"
Sota, who had just entered, paled and fell to his knees.
"Iya, matte onee-san! You can't do this, not for him!" (Translation. `No, wait big sister!' btw kanji is Japanese writing…I think)
Kagome smiled weakly at them, then went to her wardrobe and searched for something. Her family's emphatic admonitions ringing in her ears while she searched. By the time she immerged with a small black crystal everyone had gathered at her door. As she walked towards the inscribed kanji Shippou stepped in front of her.
"Haha-ue think about what you are doing! You are giving up everything you are for him!"
The severity, if not the details, of the situation dawned on the rest of the people present. One of the demonesses Shippou saved form the void spoke in a quiet voice.
"Please Megami-sama, I'm sure we can find some other way."
The pink haired demoness who spoke flinched when Kagome's gaze lingered on her. Her companion stepped in front of her slightly in an unconscious protective gesture.
"Reiya is right Haha-ue. There has to be another way!"
Reiya blushed at the use of her name without the honorific. Suddenly a thought struck her. What if I…
Her thoughts where cut off when Kagome closed her eyes, smiled sadly, and threw the crystal onto the kanji engraved into the floor. The black gem shattered, the tiny shards turning into smoke and permeating the room. As the smoke cleared a figure could be seen standing where the jewel had broken. Her midnight hair and tail where peppered with dark violet streaks. She had sharply pointed ears with small red orbs dangling from the lobes. Her eyes where a dark crimson that kept whirling, making it hard to decide if they where black or red. She had no pupils or irises to speak of, giving the illusion that she was looking everywhere at once. She had on a black jumpsuit, and carried a blood red staff. When she spoke a shiver ran down the spine of every person there.
"So you have finally chosen, Shi?"
Kagome kept her body and soul completely devoid of emotions.
"I have. I want one question answered first Eien."
Eien tilted her back and narrowed her eyes.
"Address me properly and I might answer it for you."
Kagome growled mentally at her haughty tone, but spoke evenly.
"Gomen nesai megami-sama. Please forgive me the Eien no Megami should get more respect from one such as me."
Kagome bowed deeply, then spoke again while she had her face lowered.
"Onegai, will you answer my question Megami-sama?"
Eien sighed and walked over to Kagome's bed. She sat down before answering in an exasperated voice.
"Hai hai, calm down Shi. And you know I was joking, so stop bowing and saying `megami-sama'."
Kagome straightened and walked over to her.
"If I ascended would I be able to bring him back?"
Her voice was cold, but the goddess pretended not to notice.
"Bring who back Shi-chan?"
Kagome's eyes narrowed.
"You know who. You are the eien no megami, or are you to old to pay attention now a days?"
(an- translations! - eien=eternity. Gomen nesai= I am sorry, formal-ish. Onegai=please. Hai= yes and im sure you're smart enough to know that eien no megami means goddess of eternity.)
Eien's eyes snapped to Kagome and stayed on her.
"You would not."
Her tone was as cold as Kagome's was a moment before, and was getting colder the longer she spoke.
"You already have almost all of the powers you would receive. You are one of the most powerful being in the universe, but you will never have the ability to resurrect the dead."
Her gaze slid from Kagome to Reiya.
"I wish I could say the same thing of you."
Reiya took a step back and put a hand on the sheath of her sword.
"I don't know what you are talking about, I'm nothing compared to Shi-sama."
Her voice was shaking, and she refused to look at Shippou. Kiama stepped in front of her and growled at what Eien said in response.
"Of course you do, why don't you use your sword to revive him? What are you afraid of?"
Reiya whimpered and hugged herself, all the while shaking her head. A few seconds later her knees went out and she slid to the ground. Shippou walked over to her calmly and laid a hand on her shoulder.
"Do you have the ability to bring Hiei back?"
He could feel her shaking but waited for an answer instead of comforting her. He didn't have to wait long.
"I-i will do this for you, Aoi, if you tell me your name."
Shippou smiled warmly at her still trembling form. He leaned in and whispered in his most seductive voice.
"Watashi wa Higurashi Shippou. It's the name you will be screaming later."
Her eyes widened and her face turned a thousand shades of red. Shippou smirked when he felt a shiver run down her back. She had stopped quaking when he spoke. Suddenly she jumped up and ran to where Hiei was laying in the living room, the others hot on her heels.
She drew her sword and winced.
"I don't suppose he has lived a nice pleasant life, with no bad memories?"
Kurama gave her a strange look while shaking his head no.
"Why do you ask?" Kurama's voice was filled with curiosity and impatience.
Reiya shrugged and gave them a fake smile.
"Oh no reason."
Kiama took a step towards her friend but was stopped by Kurama, who laid a hand on her shoulder.
"She is proving herself."
Kiama gazed into his emerald eyes with her own green orbs. She saw only honesty, so she allowed him to lead her away.
Kagome suddenly spoke from where she was standing with Eien.
"Why are you hesitating? What will this do to you?"
Reiya flinched and sighed. They asked the one question they weren't supposed to. She shrugged her shoulders and turned to the miko.
"I trade some of my life energy for his."
Kagome nodded then spoke in an uncharacteristic show of compassion.
"If you do not wish to do this you don't have to."

Reiya shook her head and turned back to Hiei's body.
"No, Aoi-kun already paid for this."
Before anyone could say anything she swung her sword, sending a bright light cascading over Hiei's prone form. When the light faded Hiei was still laying on the floor, lifeless.
Reiya's sword fell from her lax grip. Her eyes where glazed over. Shippou tentatively called her name. She seemed to snap out of whatever trance she had been in. She blinked a few times then fell to the floor, silently weeping. Shippou ran to her side and tried to comfort her. She shook him off and spoke in a hoarse voice.
"His soul has been stolen."

I don't know where we'll be,

in twenty years or ten

I don't know what we'll be doing,

and I don't know when

but you are a wonderful friend

you're truly one of a kind

We have so much in common

it almost feels like we have the same mind

So I don't know if we'll always be together,

and I don't know if we'll ever fight

But I know that as long as you're my friend,

Together, we can make it right!
