Chapter One -- The New Recruit
He followed Hiei as he made his way up the driveway to the mansion. The sun had not yet risen but Hiei had inisted that they come at this time. He marveled at the immensity of the marble structure before him. Huge columns of the pale white stone wider than his arms could circle, supported the roof over the front door. Hiei led him up the long flight of steps of the same stone and they were met at the door by a tall man with dark red hair and solemn green eyes. Hiei stopped before him, "This is the boy, his name is Yusuke."
The red haired man gazed at him, no change in his stoic expression. "I am Touya, Yusuke, follow me."
Yusuke looked at Hiei but his diminuative friend had already disappeared. With a shrug Yusuke followed Touya into the mansion. Over the next few hours he was introduced to other members of the household, finding that every single one of them was what he would consider a pretty boy. Yusuke rolled his eyes as he met the other body guards. Hiei glared at him when he muttered a comment about his suspicions of the perverted nature of their employer but the swordsman said nothing. What bothered him the most was the utter devotion in the voice's of these "servant" to this woman they called Mistress. He had heard about this job by accident one night when Hiei and Kurama, both firends of his, had been discussing the opening of a body guard position at their workplace. He had thought it a perfect opportunity to score a few fights. Finally Touya led him out to wait by the limo.
He continued to study his surroundings with haughty eyes, folding his arms across his chest. A guy with a high pony tail of long raven hair walked by leading several huskies and Yusuke rolled his eyes, yet another pretty boy. Finally he saw two of those he had already me, Chichiri and Sesshomaru exiting the mansion following a girl. Yusuke was impressed by her youth, he had been expecting some old crone. The tall dark hair man, who had hardly said two words since Yusuke met him, gave the boy a stern glance. With a sigh, Yusuke pushed off from the limo and stood up straight. Hiei elbowed him. "Don't screw this up."
"Shut up shorty," Yusuke muttered as he continued to study his new employer, the one everyone called Mistress. She was rather petite, not much taller than Hiei, her mouse brown hair was pulled back from her round face. The trio came to a stop before him and she looked up at him with light green-brown eyes, that shone with kindness. Touya took a few steps forward, bowing low.
"Mistress Akari, your saftey is well assured. We have even hired a new guard," he said, gesturing at Yusuke, "His name is
Yusuke."
He continued to study her as Touya introduced him. He saw her lips move ever so slightly and realized that she had known his name even before Touya said it. After Touya finished speaking, Yusuke saw the others look at her with an air of expectation. She seemed to realize this and looked at Chichiri and Sesshomaru, confusion in her eyes for a moment. Her lips form an "O", looking as if she remembered something she had forgotten. She turned back to him and extended her hand, a smile curving her mouth, "Welcome Yusuke, it is a pleasure to have you with us," she said in a clear light voice, "You must forgive me...I'm still quite sleepy."
Yusuke stared at the offered hand, unsure what to do, then felt a nudge as Hiei's elbow connected with his ribs. Glaring at his crimson eyed friend, he took her hand and shook it. He heard a snort from Hiei but ignored it.
"Well," Chichiri said, breaking the awkward silence that had fallen, "it's time for you to go, ya know?"
As if waiting for that cue, the limo driver, a card by the name of Tasuki, leapt from the driver's seat, around the limo and opened the back door, with a flourish. Laughter bubbled from Akari's lips, "Thank you Tasuki. Are you coming with us?"
With a dramatic sigh, Tasuki moaned, "No Mistress, I only have the honor of taking you to the airport."
She patted his shoulder as she stepped up to the limo, and placed a light kiss on his cheek, which made Yusuke roll his eyes yet again "Maybe next time."
"Yes Mistress," Tasuki replied, with a big stupid smile on his face, showing slightly pointed incisors. Did everyone in this place worship the ground this woman walked on? Yusuke had found that the answer to that question was a definite yes. He resolved that he would not be turned into some sap that followed her around like a sad little puppy begging for affection.
Yusuke, Kenshin, Lantis and Hiei piled into the limo after Akari. Chichiri leaned his head in, handing Akari and Lantis thick folders. "This is all the information you'll need, ya know. If you need us just call, ya know."
Akari thanked him, and he disappeared from the doorway, the door shutting with a bang. She gazed out the tinted windows, watching her estate roll slowly by as Tasuki manuevered the limo down the driveway. Yusuke noticed that she took in all of this like a person seeing it all for the first time. Kenshin leaned over and patted her hand, which rested on the leather seat beside her, "I know you hate these trips but you'll be home before you know it, that you will," he said comfortingly.
Again that smile graced her visage, "You're too kind Kenshin."
That smile was beginning to make him sick. It was too sweet, too happy, as if nothing at all were wrong in the world. It was the kind of smile poeple would say lit up a room. Yusuke snorted and folded his arms, feeling Hiei's eyes on him once again. "Something wrong Yusuke?"
"No," he responded sharply. She blinked at him, frowning and looking as though he had struck her physically. It made him regret he had spoken to her in such a tone. Disgusted he pushed away the feeling and looked away from her. Hiei leaned over and whispered, "Don't make me regret bringing you, fool," then he sat up, addressing Akari, "You must forgive his rudeness--"
"It's alright, Hiei," she said, cutting off Hiei's apology. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw that the hurt look was gone from her face and she was once again looking out the window. His fellow bodyguards however were giving him looks to kill.
