Chapter 2: Night Falls
Sayuri ran all the way to where her house was sitting. Looming. Her chest tightened from her lack of air, so she stopped and paused while she took some deep breaths. The world spun around her as she tried to keep her balance. She closed her eyes and thought about her parents' smiling faces. Her body began to respond to her normal function and she stood straight up. She walked down the street that led to the house from hell. Her raven hair fluttered in the wind and she began to brush the tears from her eyes. She didn't even want to think about innocent Shuichi being all... non-innocent. It just hurt her to think about the filth that was still stinging her skin from where the teacher touched her.
"I can't even go to school without this happening…." Sayuri muttered to herself. Being in her own body was proving to be a challenge that she wasn't willing to accept anymore. It just seemed to unlikely to her that all the shit that she was going through was just coincidence. She stopped briefly for a moment to tie her shoes. As she knelt down on the cold cement side-walk, she noticed a figure moving towards where she was at a fast pace. It was a boy, a bit taller then her, with black hair that was sleeked back with gel. His chocolate brown eyes were intense and vivid. She looked at them and tried to place them in her life, only with a less worldly view and a more childish mischief. The boy with the familiar eyes didn't see where he was going and fell right over Sayuri, bringing them both down.
"Damnit!" The boy cursed. Sayuri popped her head up.
"Yusuke?" Sayuri was surprised. She had finally placed those eyes. The boy turned his head and stared at the girl for a second before his eyes got wide with a sense of shock.
"Sayuri?!" Yusuke stumbled. He couldn't believe that she was right in front of him. He hadn't seen her since they were children, and that was a long time ago. Sayuri smiled and she hugged Yusuke, noting that it was the first time in a long time that she had made physical contact with someone on her own will. Yusuke hugged her back, surprised that she was less lively, but still happy to see his childhood friend.
"I can't believe you're back in Japan! When did you get back?" Yusuke said loudly. He was so excited that he didn't realize that he was screaming. Sayuri smiled and brushed off the dirt on Yusuke's school uniform. Yusuke looked at his clothes and noticed that he was covered in dust from the street. He quickly ran his hands over his uniform and brushed what he could off. They both looked down at the ground and realized that they were still sitting on the dirty sidewalk. Yusuke got up and offered his hand to Sayuri, who was scrambling to get up.
"I got back a few months ago." Sayuri smiled. Yusuke felt full of energy. Yusuke surveyed the new look of his old friend. She was stunning. Her small body had grown into a slim body of a teenager. When she was younger she was thin and taller than most of the boys, but now she had filled out her form with… other things. Her hair had grown so much since he remembered. It was a dark purple that shimmered in the sun. Her eyes were a dark violet, like the color of her hair. Yusuke remembered those eyes vividly. When no one was around, Sayuri would let her guard down and Yusuke swore he could see straight into her. She had a good soul. And an even better smile. Something that disturbed Yusuke though, was that her eyes looked red, like she had been crying. He immediately noticed the school uniform she was wearing. It was the uniform that the girl's wore at Kurama's school! He figured she must know who he was; considering he was the most popular boy at his school. The fox always had a popular following.
"Sayuri, you never said you went to Mieou High! I have a friend who goes there. Why don't you come over to the temple? A bunch of us hang out there." Yusuke said, feeling more perky then usual. Sayuri looked a bit nervous, but nodded. She knew that being home late would result in a punishment, but she wanted to see Yusuke. He reminded her of her parents, and they had been everything to her.

Kurama had barely finished telling everyone about Sayuri (using a different name for
her) when Yusuke came bashing the door down, and dragging a girl. Kurama stood up to catch the girl as Yusuke tripped and sent them both flying. Kurama caught the girl in his arms and she held on to him tightly. The girl lifted her head up a bit to see what was happening, but her bangs were in the way. Kurama took his hand and brushed away the dark colored hair from the girl's eyes. When he did, he became caught in two violet eyes starring into him. Suddenly Kurama was aware of who he was looking at. It was Sayuri.
Sayuri stared at Shuichi's emerald green eyes. His hands were gentle and his arms held on to her with such ease. For once, Sayuri felt that this set of arms wasn't going to hurt her. She knew that she should pull away, but she couldn't take her eyes off of the boy. His ruby red hair fell in loose strands as he lifted her up so she wouldn't be hurting her legs from being in an awkward position. Kurama felt his muscles tense as he released his grasp on Sayuri. Her frame was so small and light, but he felt like he had to take extreme measures to not hurt her. The situation with Watanabe flooded his memory again; he looked away from her.
"YUSUKE YOU IDIOT! You could have killed that girl!" Genkai screamed as Yusuke got up with a look of being frustrated. Genkai walked over to where Sayuri was standing and surveyed the girl. She was pretty to say the least, but she had a light aura around her that to Genkai meant she was not only human.
"I'm Master Genkai. Sorry that dumbass almost got you killed. Please, sit." Genkai said to Sayuri. Sayuri nodded and sat next to Shuichi.
"Thank you Master Genkai, but Yusuke has been doing stuff like that since he was a kid." Sayuri smiled politely. Yusuke sat down on the floor and got a little red from embarrassment. Everyone looked at him and laughed. Kuwabara was making faces at Yusuke and re-enacting the fall on a slightly smaller scale. Yusuke hit him hard on the head, starting a heated argument between the two.
"So you know this dimwit?" Genkai asked nicely. Sayuri nodded slightly.
"He and I were friends when we were children. That is, until I moved out of Japan and we couldn't keep in contact anymore." Sayuri replied. She felt a string of confidence build inside her, like it was so natural to be with people she didn't know. She liked how it felt.
"Sayuri just got back from out of the country a few months ago so I invited her over for a home cooked meal!" Yusuke said.
“But Yusuke, you can't cook you idiot!” Kuwabara pinched Yusuke.
“Shut up! I can too!” Yusuke said between beating Kuwabara up. Kurama looked suspicious for a moment.
"Are your parent's ok with that Sayuri?" Kurama said while looking at the girl. Sayuri's face fell at the mention of her dead parents. She thought for a moment, and decided that she couldn't hide the truth from Yusuke.
"My parents died a few months ago in a plane crash on their way back to the United States. Their bodies were never found so I never had a funeral for them. That's the reason I came back to Japan, to see you Yusuke. I missed you and every thing here. It's my real home." Sayuri half heartedly smiled. Yusuke gave Kurama a death glare for making Sayuri upset. Kurama did feel a bit guilty about his question, but at least now he knew why she seemed so mature. Sensing the tension and sadness growing, Botan decided to help Yusuke cheer up Sayuri.
"How about you and I go make dinner Sayuri! I'm Botan! We'll be great friends! Let's go!" Botan grabbed Sayuri in a fluttered panic and half dragged her to the kitchen. Sayuri went without a fuss and started to help with dinner. Hiei sat by Kurama who was going over things in his mind.
{What, fox?}
{Sayuri is that girl I was speaking of earlier…}
{That nigen? Hmm…I can see why…}
{See what, Hiei?}
{She is a lot prettier then the normal nigens.}
{Almost too pretty…}
{Hnn.}
Yusuke returned to beating up Kuwabara and Genkai started an engaging conversation with Kurama. Hiei went to the kitchen to check on the girls. He opened the door to find a crazy Botan going on about how cute boys were while almost burning the food. An elegant Sayuri chopped up vegetables. Hiei walked in and Sayuri kept smiling as best as she could. All of these people in one place; she felt that maybe she would learn to socialize again. It hadn't been that long since she knew what it was like to talk to others- she just needed the chance to start again. Hiei sniffed the air and felt his appetite grow. He surveyed the girls and walked to the counter and sat down.
"…so that's how it all ended. But he was so cute…" Botan chattered. Sayuri finished cutting up the vegetables and put it in the pan. She gently cooked them so that they were perfect color and the room smelled of a sweet aroma. Botan frantically tried to stop the steam coming from her burnt vegetables. Sayuri smiled a bit and poured some water over the vegetables. She then set the gas lower and showed Botan what to do. Botan kept chatting and Sayuri listened and nodded when appropriate. She didn't force herself to talk, but she tried to be friendly. Hiei watched the girl. She was so delicate and fragile. Her skin was pale and it looked as if she was dying from lack of sunlight. Yet, it seemed to him that she had this glow about her that attracted anyone to her. He could see why a pathetic ningen would want her as a mate, she was beautiful and weak, easy for someone to make her theirs. Hiei was thinking about Sayuri when he realized that she was right in front of him and that she was putting something in his mouth. He didn't realize that his silence volunteered him for food tasting. He chewed the piece of food, and swallowed.
"Hmmmm?" Sayuri asked the boy seriously. Hiei licked his lips and was shocked that any ningen plant would taste good. He looked back at Sayuri who didn't seem aware of the taboo of approaching Hiei. He pointed to the plate where the vegetables used to be and the ningen actually laughed out loud. Her smile was genuine at the moment and he thought he felt a change in the emotion of the room. She surprised him and Hiei found himself giving her a little smirk. Botan's mouth was at the floor while she started laughing. Hiei quickly stopped smirking. Botan laughed her head off all the way into the dining area where everyone had gathered. Sayuri came out with her hands full of platters with food. She daintily set them down and let everyone help themselves to what ever they wanted. It was the first time she had made food for some one other than herself, since her parents had died.
`It used to be a passion. Not anymore.' She thought to herself. Kurama walked into the room and smelt the aroma of food tingle his nose. Everything smelled delicious.
"Sayuri! Did you make this by yourself?" Yusuke asked while stuffing his mouth full of food. Sayuri laughed and shook her head, giving Botan some credit. Botan felt embarrassed that she had burnt her food so she smiled and gave a wink to Sayuri who smiled honestly again.
"Sayuri, would you care to stay here for a while. Without your parents alive, it must be hard to live by yourself. We have plenty of rooms here…" Genkai said. Sayuri felt her heart leap at the chance, but she knew that Yukio would be madder then hell. She looked at Yusuke and at Shuichi. She even looked at the young boy with bold black hair that put Newton's Law of Gravity to shame. They all awaited her response.
"Thank you all for your hospitality, but honestly, I have to go home. I have to leave now. I don't want anyone to worry about me…" Sayuri said. She hurriedly got up and Yusuke stood up.
"Wait!" Yusuke shouted to Sayuri who ran out of the room. “DAMNIT!” Yusuke cursed as he went to go after her but Kurama beat him to it. Kurama was out the door like lighting. Yusuke looked a bit pissed off.
"Yusuke, do you think that there is something amiss?" Botan said quietly. She didn't want the detective on her bad side, but she wanted to point it out because Sayuri was such a sweet person.
“What do you mean, Botan?” Yusuke asked.
"She doesn't have any parents, dimwit. And then she says she doesn't want to worry anyone. She must be living with someone." Genkai added to the silence. Yusuke's eyes practically shot out of his head as he turned to Hiei.
"Hiei! Tell Kurama to find Sayuri!" Yusuke screamed at the koorime. Hiei glared at the detective with a hateful look.
{Fox…}
{Yes, Hiei….}
{The detective is getting emotional. Watch her.}
{Of course.}
{Hnn.}
"Hnnn…" Hiei commented and then in a flash he was gone, not to be seen.

Sayuri stopped running when she thought she was safely away from the temple. She clutched on to her book bag as she walked slowly down the dark streets back to the hell house. Her heart felt so full that she wanted to cry and scream and break everything.
`A real home… great. Yusuke and Shuichi. Botan and Master Genkai. The loud boy and the quiet boy. It doesn't matter to me… I want to end this. I'm just never going to be strong enough. I'm a failure. Who'd want to even be seen walking with me, let alone have people know I lived with them?' Sayuri battered her ego and left it for dead. She turned a corner and ran into someone who grabbed her arms. Immediately she fought back, assuming it was a mugger or a pervert.
"Sayuri! Stop it, it's me, Shuichi!" A clear voice rang in her head. She opened her eyes and found a pair of emerald eyes staring at her own. The eyes had such a strange look in them. It was a look that she had seen many times before. She felt anger weld up inside her.
"Don't pity me! Don't you give me that look!" Sayuri yelled as she ran down the street, leaving the boy standing in the darkness, alone. Sayuri ran to the front door of the house, and then heavily sighed. She didn't want to open the door, because she knew what was going to be awaiting her. Yukio would be pissed off that his little “meal” came home late. She knew that it was inevitable, so she opened the door and walked inside on her tip toes. Sayuri had the stairs in sight, but strong hands pulled her back into a dimly lit room. They picked her up by the arms and set her down on a chair. Around her, she could smell alcohol and the scent of cologne.
"Sayuri. You're late." A deep male voice said from the shadows. Sayuri looked down at her feet and at her book bag. She knew nothing would change the facts.
"I'm sorry Yukio. I won't do it again." Sayuri said as she lifted her head up. A male figure emerged from the shadows. He was tall and lean, with dark brown hair and mud colored eyes that glowed a light yellow in the dark. He was quite handsome, had it not been for his demonic nature.
"You tell me you won't ever be late again, and still you are…" The young man said to Sayuri. Sayuri pleaded with him with her eyes. She could sense his rage building and spreading onto the situation. It never mattered to Yukio who made him angry- he always made sure he took it out on her.
"Please Yukio! An old friend took me to a temple for dinner…" Sayuri pleaded. Yukio's eyes widened at the mention of any associate of Sayuri's. When he first let her enroll in school, he made sure to specify that she was to have no friends. No one was allowed to get close to her. He built her to stand alone. She stood up from her chair and anger filled her eyes. She wouldn't lose Yusuke again; she had the chance to have a life again. Her fists were clenched and she felt like hitting Yukio. Yukio smirked at Sayuri's angry reactions. She wanted his damn smirk to stop! She was sick of the pain.
"Go upstairs. I'll be up later, and we'll see if you're ever late again…" Yukio laughed evilly. Sayuri's eyes widened in fear, but she remained standing much to Yukio's surprise.
"Go. Upstairs." Yukio said as his look turned to an angry scowl. He walked over to where Sayuri was still standing. Sayuri boldly looked him in the eye and didn't move. Yukio was getting worried that she wasn't going to move. He wasn't about to let some pathetic girl make him look weak. Not after all that he did for the ungrateful bitch.
"Get up there NOW!" Yukio slapped Sayuri across the face. Sayuri didn't flinch. She turned her head towards the demon, a menacingly slow and silent turn. Her eyes were a magenta color, glowing and making Yukio nervous by the millisecond. Yukio could sense his subjects get worried.
"I will not move. I don't take orders from scum like you!" Sayuri said loud and clear. Gasps were heard in the back round as Yukio grabbed the girl and dragged her up the stairs. Sayuri tried to fight him, but he put her over his shoulders and walked up the stairs, not giving her any time to run away.
"You think you can disobey me?!?" Yukio screamed. He opened the door to Sayuri's bed room and threw her on the bed. Sayuri tried to make a run for it, but Yukio was a wolf demon with powerful legs. He found her in the dark and pinned her to the bed. Sayuri tried to kick the demon, but she was utterly powerless against him, and he was enjoying it. He loved the sick game of cat-and-mouse. He always had time for an extra “meal”.
"Get off me!" Sayuri screamed. She thrust her body to the sides to try and get him off. Yukio ripped her school uniform off her, leaving her in her under clothes. He summoned a seed to his hand, an ability that Sayuri didn't know he had. Yukio opened Sayuri's mouth and slipped it in there. She felt like throwing up when the pill slid down her throat. It was slimy and pulsating like a heart. Yukio let go of her mouth and stopped holding on to her. Sayuri saw this as a perfect chance to run away. She tried to get up, but her body wouldn't respond to what she wanted to it to do. She tried screaming for help, but nothing came out. Yukio had drugged her with something powerful.
Yukio ran his hands along Sayuri's breasts, feeling the soft skin. She tried to call out, to beg, but her mouth remained still. His hands roamed Sayuri's legs and thighs. She wanted to hurt him so badly that it hurt her. He trailed his kisses up her stomach and onto her chest. The rage was breaking through and she started losing touch with herself. Yukio laughed at Sayuri. She could feel his body pounding against hers, bleeding her dry. He was taking everything from her. After a while she started not to feel it any more. In fact, she couldn't feel anything. Sayuri couldn't feel the tears falling down her cheeks. She couldn't control anything any more. She broke. The person she held together shattered and she couldn't glue all the pieces together. Suddenly, light appeared to her. It was the same bright light that she had been seeing for as long as she could remember. She relaxed and let the light welcome her into its arms. The light faded, but the feeling of being held didn't stop.
