Chapter 3: Dark of Night

Sayuri felt the warm arms envelope her. They were warm and comforting on her hurting body. The wind from an open window breezed over her almost naked body. She shivered from the coldness, causing the person to hold her closer to their chest. Sayuri could feel her vision getting blurry as tears fell from her eyes.
"Help…" was all that Sayuri managed to choke out. She felt the figure set her head down and gently wrap her in a blanket that was thin. The figure then lifted her up into its arms and waved its hand in front of the air. A red circle appeared and it glowed slightly in the night air. The figure walked towards it and looked down. The last thing Sayuri saw, was the amber colored eyes and two furry ears sticking out of a silver haired head. After that, everything went black.

Kurama walked down the hall to where the crew was waiting to hear the news. Yusuke had gone crazy when he had brought Sayuri to the temple.

Youko stepped out of the portal he had created to get to Genkai's. He ran across the grass carrying Sayuri's limp body in his arms. He realized how fragile she did look at the moment. Her face was emotionless, and yet she actually looked like she was at peace. Youko was afraid that he was too late and that she might have died. She still had that aura around her, but it was weak, very weak. Youko made it to the door of Genkai's and knocked. A flustered Yukina answered the door and gasped at what she saw. A furious youkai holding a body of a young girl. Yukina stepped to the side to let Youko Kurama in. Yusuke and everyone came into the living upon not hearing anything. Yusuke looked at Youko and then at Sayuri with a broken heart.
"DAMNIT! I'll kill the bastard who did this to her!!" Yusuke could feel hot tears run down his cheeks as he ran out of the temple. Kuwabara ran after him to prevent him from killing someone innocent. He too could feel a bad pain in his chest when he looked at Yusuke's childhood friend. The sight disturbed him. A fragile body, almost totally nude under a stained sheet. There were bruises along her face among other places. She looked dead with her clear skin and sleep-deprived eyes. Hiei looked at the girl, and then looked away, disgusted at the demonic race: off somewhere to deal with himself. Botan gasped and let the tears trail down her eyes. She went over to Sayuri and checked for a pulse. It was there, but wasn't constant; like Sayuri wasn't sure if she wanted to live or if she was ready to die.
"Put her in an extra bedroom. This was obviously committed by a demon. The aura of a demon still glows around her…." Genkai said. She couldn't bear to look at the poor girl. Such a horrible thing it was to go through something like that, even by a human. The girl would need time to recover, and it was possible that she might not heal all the way. Emotional scars never heal fully, Genkai knew that. She walked with Youko and Botan to the room. Youko walked down the hall to where an extra bed room was. Genkai and Botan took Sayuri and pushed Youko out of the room. They closed the door and looked at the girl before them. She was fading out. The beating she had taken was harsh, and with everything else the demon did to her, it seemed unnecessary.
“Botan, get hot water, wash cloths, and bandages.” Genkai said, trying not to let the emotion crack over in her voice. Both the women started to work. Time passed before Kuwabara walked in the temple, severely battered and bruised from head to toe, saying that Yusuke was out back and that anyone who valued their life should stay away. Youko sighed and called to his more sensitive side to help his team mate and friend. He walked out to the back of the temple and saw such a horrible sight. Yusuke was crying on the grass, bawling completely. Youko walked over to him and placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. Yusuke looked up at the demon and Youko looked so shocked. The boy's eyes were brimming with tears, over lapping the tears that already fell down on the grass.
"I….I could have stopped her...I should have done….something….anything…." Yusuke cried harder and harder, his breath coming is ragged gasps. Youko held the boy to his chest, and he felt Yusuke let everything loose. He cried so hard that he was barely breathing. Youko held everything inside, not wanting to let it loose. He for sure thought that she was ok. In his mind, he tracked her, following everything from the time that Yukio had dragged her up stairs, to the last ragged breath she took before she felt that warm light. Youko held on to Yusuke trying to remember what that warm light felt like. He needed it right now. He needed Sayuri too.

Kurama stepped into the living room where everyone was fixated on the girl down the hall. Kuwabara looked up as Shuichi walked over to Yusuke, who was sitting with his head down. Botan glanced at Kurama. He didn't look so good from the lack of sleep.
"Sayuri was up for a bit. She fell asleep again. She will get better. I promise." Kurama said. A hint of pity entered his voice, and Kurama could feel himself get angry at that damn Yukio. He heard her screaming in his head, as each minute began to break apart, and then her mind went blank until he had arrived there to help her. By then, Yukio had left.
"I want him dead…" Yusuke snapped. He got up, and walked outside. He never expected this to happen to anyone, let alone Sayuri. His child hood friend; she was in danger and hurt badly just because some demon couldn't control himself. In some way, Yusuke felt responsible for Sayuri being hurt. He would never be able to protect her any more. He failed.

Within her mind, the light still glowed bright. The sun still shinned and the darkness was still darkness. It wasn't a part of her life, but it wasn't gone. She ran along with her parents, who held her tiny hand. They were still living and real. She didn't know what to do. Was she dreaming? Of course, her parents had died 3 months ago. There wasn't anyway to bring them back to life from the land of the dead. But, she didn't care. She held on to her parents' hands and swung back and forth. They looked at her, and she could feel the light get really warm. Suddenly she was in the closet, back in the States. She felt the blood on her hands; warm and dripping on the carpet. The voices laughed and drew closer to where Sayuri hid. Her knees drew up towards her chest as the closet door creaked open. The light blinded her and she saw his face. Then she awoke.

Sayuri felt a small hand on her forehead, and then suddenly it was gone. Her body jolted upright and she felt sweat drip down her back. Sayuri's eyes looked around the room until she found a figure, clad in black, standing by her bed. She blinked her eyes a couple times in the darkness of the night. The boy looked at her strangely and Sayuri moved back. The figure moved forward and Sayuri felt her heart start racing.
"I'm not going to hurt you onna…" The figure said with no emotion in his voice. Sayuri sat there, her body frozen in an apathetic tone. She closed her eyes and zoned out, refusing to let herself witness anything more. Her body was on the bed, still sitting and now crying openly; but her mind was plastered to the wall, watching everything happen. She must protect herself. `No more! No more...' Sayuri screamed in her head.
"Hnn." Hiei said as Kurama and Yusuke ran into the room after sensing Sayuri's energy bounce upwards and then down again. Kurama walked over to Sayuri, who kept on crying silent tears. Yusuke looked like he was going to kill Hiei.
"HIEI!!" Yusuke growled. Hiei gave the detective a glare.
"Detective, weak ningens aren't worth my time…" Hiei said before he suddenly vanished out the window. Yusuke walked over to where Sayuri was. She had stopped the tears, but seemed like she wasn't there. Yusuke waved a hand in front of her face and she sat there, staring out into the corner.
"Ku…I mean Shuichi, what is wrong with her?" Yusuke said. Kurama looked at his friend and gave him a sad look. It didn't look too good for Sayuri. She was paler then before he found her in the run down house. Her bruises were taking full form and turning dark purple and green; taking away from her attractive form. Kurama felt his heart sink when he looked at her.
"Her mind is refusing to put up with everything. She is losing her will to live." Kurama said softly. Yusuke could feel the anger boil up in him again. A demon raping an innocent girl….Yusuke wouldn't stand for it, and he vowed on his life that he would find the demon, and slaughter him into a million pieces very slowly with his Spirit Gun.
"I'm leaving. Tell Keiko that I won't be back until later." Yusuke mumbled as he walked towards the door, leaving Kurama to watch over Sayuri. Kurama looked at the detective and felt sorry for him. He had known Sayuri all his life and just as she was coming back into his life, she was put through hell. A moment later he realized that Sayuri wasn't just Yusuke's friend, she had probably been someone Yusuke trusted and cared for. If she had always looked that weak, then Yusuke would have felt it was his duty to protect her. A sharp pain in Kurama's chest brought him back to reality as he realized that not only did Yusuke feel bad for not protecting her, but so did he. He could have followed her home and kept her from having to go through this. He could feel the anger that Yusuke felt for letting someone do this to an innocent human.
"Sayuri?" Kurama asked the girl, who had apparently taken interest in the far corner. She was slowly slipping away from him and he knew that he had to bring her back somehow.
"Kurama? Who is that?" A sweet voice asked the boy. Kurama turned suddenly and put a finger up to his mouth to tell the person to be quiet. He saw that it was Keiko and Yukina, standing at the door way with flowers.
"Please, remember to call me Shuichi…" Kurama hinted to Keiko, who took him on his hint. Yukina had already walked toward Sayuri, feeling her dissolving aura.
"Shuichi, what happened to her? Her life is growing shorter..." Yukina quietly whispered. Keiko walked briskly up to the bed where she saw a young girl, maybe older then her, staring out into space. She could see tear stains run down her face.
"This is Sayuri Kurowa, a childhood friend of Yusuke's and of mine…" Kurama stood up and motioned for the two girls to follow him. They went over by their favorite fox and listened carefully. Kurama debated about the right way to bring everything up. Keiko also knew this human, making it hard for Kurama to give the facts in a quick manner. Yukina, as gentle as she was, knew the cruelties that people would go to in order to get what they wanted. She would be the first to remember when she was captured and hurt to obtain her precious tears.
"Why is her energy disappearing, Kurama?" Yukina whispered to the others. Kurama looked saddened by that questioned, but answered.
"She was defiled by a demon. I rescued her." Kurama mumbled, but it was loud enough that the two girls understood. Keiko held her mouth in surprise while Yukina looked horrified at the thought. The three of them looked over at Sayuri, who was still staring into space. Yukina walked over to the girl and took her hand gently so as not to startle her. She looked at the girl who looked like she was in a coma.
"Hello Sayuri. I'm Yukina. How about I go and make soup for you?" Yukina asked, knowing that she wouldn't get an answer; she turned to Kurama for the ok. Kurama smiled and Yukina left Keiko and him to get some soup for the poor girl. Keiko looked at Kurama with saddened eyes, and found a look of guilt in his. She was shocked to see the brave and sensible Kurama taking responsibility for not saving her faster. She knew that look any where.
"Kurama, you couldn't have gotten to her any faster. It wasn't your fault." Keiko said as she stared at Kurama. He looked down at her and nodded.
"Yes, you are right Keiko. Yusuke wanted me to tell you that he would be home late tonight." Kurama smiled at the young girl. Keiko smiled back and she walked out of the room to go and put her stuff in another room. Kurama walked back over to Sayuri, who continued her staring contest. He found a brush in one of the drawers of the dresser, and proceeded to brush her long raven hair. He found himself thinking about how beautiful she was. She had long raven hair that was very soft, and dark violet eyes that would grab anyone's attention within a 5 mile radius. Her cheeks still carried the tear stains from her silent crying. Kurama ran the brush through her hair and watched as Yukina came back to feed her. The Koorime put the spoon up to the girl's mouth and tilted it back. She repeated the process until it was gone and Sayuri had more color to her face.
“Help me lay her down in the bed, Shuichi.” Yukina asked. Kurama walked over and lifted the girl up while Yukina separated the sheets. Sayuri lay still while Yukina fixed the blankets around the girls body so she wouldn't get cold. Her violet hair fell around the pillow and almost spilled over the bed.
“Good night, Sayuri.” Kurama said as he closed the door after Yukina.
