Chapter 4- Night Light
Outside the temple stood a figure clad in a black robe with the hood pulled all the way over his head. Locks of his black hair fell over his shoulders as he watched his betrothed cry in her sleep. Her deep violet hair stuck to her face as she tossed in her human bed. He held a hand up to his chest and felt her pain course through out his body. He pulled his hand away when he saw visions of a certain disgusting wolf demon make his fiancé bow to his will. The rain started to fall in small droplets on his robe. The temperature rose in his body as he disappeared in the direction of the wolf demon's lair with only one thing in his mind: Revenge.

Sayuri awoke with a start as her nightmare of a black clad man ended in a blood bath at Yukio's domain. Her head burned from the dream and her chest tightened. Foot steps in the hall way called to her ears and she looked towards the bedroom door. Yusuke opened the door to Sayuri's bedroom and found her violet eyes glowing in the blackness of the room.
“You're awake…” Yusuke mentioned awkwardly. Sayuri nodded and sighed. She wasn't sure exactly what she could say to make the situation better.
`But I'm safe for now. At least for now…' She thought to herself.
“I'm sorry, Sayuri. I'm sorry Kurama wasn't faster, and I'm sorry I didn't go myself and help…I'm sorry!” Yusuke fell to his knees at her bedside, begging for forgiveness. Sayuri's facial expressions went still for a moment.
“Is Kurama the one who saved me?” Sayuri asked, her memory reminding her of the strange guardian she had. The silver hair, those golden magma eyes, and those… fuzzy ears?
“Yeah… I keep playing it over in my head that I would have gotten you to stay… You would have been okay. That damn demon!! Stealing you like that! Hurting you!! I'll….”
“How do you know Yukio was a demon?!” Sayuri looked startled and scared that maybe she said something while asleep. Her head cause the room to spin around her and she started feeling faint. She attempted to swing her legs around the bed to get something cold to drink, but found she couldn't complete her quest. Sayuri grabbed her forehead and groaned.
“Sayuri?! BOTAN, COME HERE!” Yusuke yelled for the blue-haired ferrywoman. Botan came rushing in with Kurama and Yukina at her side. Botan noticed the detective begging Sayuri to lay back down until she was better.
“Sayuri's awake…” Kurama whispered. He hadn't expected the human girl to recover so fast from that demon. He watched on as both Botan and Yusuke had to hold her down so she wouldn't try to move while Yukina was checking to see if her injuries were worse.
“Yusuke, she's healing really quickly. Look…” Yukina pointed to the bruises on Sayuri's legs and arms that were fading quietly. They were an ugly green-purple color less then 5 hours ago. Kurama sauntered in and walked over to where Sayuri was now laying back comfortably on the bed.
“Hello Sayuri, are you feeling better?” Kurama asked the girl. She looked up at him and then at everyone else, curious to know what was going on.
“Yusuke, what is going on? Why do you think I was kidnapped? How do you know Yukio is a demon? What is going on!?” Sayuri yelled at the detective. Kurama watched as the detective brashly started yelling at the girl.
“You mean you weren't kidnapped?! Do you mean to tell me that you were LIVING with that DEMON by CHOICE?!?!” Yusuke got all red and Kurama could feel the anger levels rising. Surprisingly Sayuri started to yell back.
“YES! Well…. Not by choice! You idiot! Who'd want that by CHOICE!?” Sayuri hit Yusuke in the face with her pillow and the two started to bicker and fight about her living arrangements. Botan and Yukina both sighed and watched the two fight.
“Sayuri, how did you come to live with Yukio?” Kurama interrupted the two loudly, trying to get facts. Sayuri looked at Kurama with a saddened face. She figured she might as well tell the real truth, the one that was eventually going to free her.
“ He murdered my parents in the States, things got shaky and he took me back here, to Japan, because who would notice a Japanese girl in Japan? I didn't have anyone to tell… so I didn't say anything. It was my fault, for not being stronger…” Sayuri let tears roll off her cheeks and onto the sheets. By now, all the gang was crowding into the bedroom. Genkai walked up to Sayuri's bed and held her hand.
“You'll be safer here. Everyone go back to bed. Hiei and Shuichi, stay with me and Sayuri. We need to have a talk.” Genkai ordered. Every one but Kurama and Hiei left the room, taking back to their beds or staying up to wait for breakfast. Genkai watched Yusuke as he quietly left the room and closed the door behind him.
“Uhmm…. Someone please tell me what is going on. No one has answered my questions, but I've answered everyone else's.” Sayuri demanded of the old woman. Genkai looked at Kurama and Hiei. Her fading pink hair pulled back from when she fell asleep that night, when no one was sure that Sayuri would make it through the night because of her injuries.
“Hiei, use the Jagan.” Kurama told his team mate. Sayuri looked up at her classmate with fear in her eyes. Genkai nodded in agreement and the smaller boy removed his bandana, showing the evil eye in all its glory.
“What are you? WHAT- STOP!” Sayuri screamed as she felt the smaller demon take control of her mind and breeze through her memories like she was a dvd player. She felt her body being overtaken by the emotions connected to the memories; anger, sadness, guilt, and rage. Suddenly the dvd player in her mind stopped at the blank section she had.
“Hiei, is something wrong?” Kurama asked the Jaganshi. Genkai noticed the boy's body tensed up slightly, his gaze fixed on the girl. Sayuri's eyes glazed over, changing slowly into a magenta color. Genkai looked at the girl and smiled; she was indeed a demon. Sayuri's body shook and Hiei could tell that if he tried to pull out any more memories, he might hurt her.
“Keep going, Hiei.” Genkai protested. She knew that there was more to Sayuri then what she led on. Hiei growled and the Jagan pushed farther.
Sayuri sat in a closet, listening to her parents defend her and die. She felt the blood drip down her hands, thick and red. Her knees drawn up to her chest made her look like a little child again. The foot steps grew closer and finally the closet door opened. An ugly demon's face appeared and Sayuri recognized Yukio instantly. Hiei watched through Sayuri's eyes as she was dragged out by the wolf demon. He saw the bodies of the girl's parents and felt her tears on his cheeks. Then the room changed and he felt Sayuri hiding behind a bedroom door, listening to her parents speak about her. Her memories started flooding over her. Her parents talked about the abilities that she would be gaining and how they would tell her. The mother's long violet hair swayed from the breeze that her husband was using to listen to his wind chimes. Sayuri's mother spoke of how they might never be able to defeat the curse as Sayuri's father started packing things up. Sayuri saw her parents move the family around. She felt the heat in her chest, not the loneliness, but rather the excitement at moving again. Hiei felt it too, a thrill at chasing nothing but adventure. Sayuri remembered the long fights that her parent's had about someone following them. She remembered her mother manipulating her memories and finally erasing them to protect her. The more Sayuri remembered, the more pain it caused her, her head burned like it was on fire. Her parents smiled, her parents hugged her. Then she was at the park, with Yusuke, with Keiko. School, tests, ramen, demons, family; Samael.
And then it stopped. Sayuri's eyes closed, and she stopped.
