Chapter 5: Night Time Dilemma
“SAYURI!” Kurama grabbed the girl as she fell out of the bed. Her body laid limp, hair falling over Kurama's shoulders. Hiei stumbled backwards, head searing from the connection he made. Genkai touched Hiei's shoulder lightly and he growled at her, almost hissing in defense. His Jagan still open and his body still taking in all the physical memories that the girl had. He felt odd emotions that he never knew existed.
“A curse? Moving? Who is he?” Hiei started blabbing nonsense, his head filled with all the memories the girl had hidden from her.
“Samael.” Suddenly the line went dead and Hiei's Jagan closed as he fell to the floor. Kurama looked at Genkai who looked at the fox. Neither knew what to do.
“SAYURI!!??” Yusuke came running into the room, followed by the rest of the gang. Yusuke saw a passed out Hiei and an unconscious Sayuri in Kurama's arms.

“All I remember was Sayuri calling me. She just kept screaming my name and no one else heard it.” Yusuke explained to the gang. Hiei and Sayuri were still out cold when Yukina and Keiko made breakfast hours later. Yusuke scratched his head and sighed. The Genkai sat silently at the end of the table, trying to take in all the nonsense that Hiei had mumbled before passing out. A bump behind her awakened her to reality as everyone turned and looked at the doorway where Sayuri stood in a long t-shirt against the door frame. Her figure was twisted with agony and her face showed signs that she was in pain.
“Kurama…” Sayuri fell on the ground and Yusuke ran to her. Kurama stood up, shocked that the girl had uttered his name without knowing it. Yukina felt for a pulse.
“She's okay, she's just tired. Food might…”
“Don't feed her anything. Stupid onna.” Hiei growled, leaning against the door frame opposite to where Sayuri had leaned earlier. Everyone now stood up, looking at the two, who looked miserable in themselves. Yusuke glared at Hiei for his stupid comment.
“What happened, Hiei?” Yukina asked the boy, who had only managed to get his pants back on before wandering in to the dinning area. Hiei grimaced and looked at the girl.
“She took MY memories. Stupid girl.” Hiei sat down angrily and watched as Yukina asked Kuwabara to help her take Sayuri to her room. Once the two returned, Hiei had finished eating enough to sustain him for the time being.
“Explain, Hiei!” Yusuke demanded from the Jaganshi. Hiei glared at the boy detective who was so damn protective of the girl. He didn't care if she was cursed or dying or being hunted. No one had the right to his memories.
“She got into my memories through my Jagan.” Hiei retorted. Kurama nodded and Genkai thought before she spoke.
“So she was able to see and feel everything that you have known?” Genkai asked, shocked that the girl was able to zero in while in such a week state. Hiei snorted and got up to go back to his room. He needed to be rid of the connection, in no way did he need to be recalling any memories of hers while out on a mission or killing some demon in the Makai.
“What is she?” Keiko asked Genkai, who seemed to be deep in thought. She looked at the Jaganshi and for a brief moment wondered what Hiei's memories would contain. She quickly decided that she had no use for death in trying to imagine the Jaganshi's most painful memories.
“Her name is Sayoko Kurowamiya. She's actually a half breed. Part demon, part cursed.” Came the familiar voice of a toddler. Botan smiled as Koenma walked into the dinning room where everyone was continuing breakfast. Genkai smiled at the Prince of the Reikai as he sat down and ate fast. She had expected him to be in time for breakfast.
“So she is a demon of sorts?” Kuwabara asked. He scratched his head and waited for someone to continue on with the conversation. Koenma finished his pancakes and looked up at the group, who sat looking at him; waiting for answers as always.
“She's part night demon and part wind demon. Her father was Osamu Kurowamiya, a wind demon who chose to live in the Ningenkai with his part demon wife Usagi. Usagi Itori was part night demon and human; but she also was the Lilith carrier.” Koenma emphasized the last part of his statement. Kurama racked his brains, the name Lilith had him feeling like he had heard about it some where. Kuwabara gave Koenma an idiot's look.
“Lilith as in the child-eater who is destined to be alone for all eternity?” Keiko asked the child prince. Kurama recalled hearing about the name Lilith in school and recalled multiple myths and ideas about the woman believed sometimes to be the actual first woman, who in return strayed from Adam because she refused to lie beneath him. She had indeed believed that she was just as equal to him as he was to her.
“Yes and no,” Koenma made a note of. “ The Lilith curse has been around since before myself. My father has kept documentation of all who marry a carrier of the Lilith curse. They are all related back to one family. Only the women can become a Lilith cursed. Both genders carry it.” Koenma grabbed another pancake and ate it in a hurry. Genkai seemed to recall a myth about the curse, never actually meeting someone with the curse.
“Anyway, most of the Lilith carriers were wiped out when one of them married into the wrong kind of clan and then tried to get out. They were feared as to bring all the darkness and disease and death. It has been really important to find the carriers.” Koenma finished. Kuwabara had gone back to eating while Yusuke and everyone paid close attention to Koenma.
“So, when I heard that only one carrier remained and she had gotten herself into a messy situation, I came straight to my great detectives!” Koenma looked all gushy and happy to be back with the gang. Yusuke tried to let it all sink in- that his friend Sayuri was actually Sayoko; and not only that, but she was carrying a curse on her blood line and she wasn't even totally human. He didn't even know what to say, it was too surreal for him.
“So you are telling me, that I've known this girl all my childhood and she isn't even who you are saying she is? You better start with the explaining, toddler!” Yusuke yelled. Koenma's face flushed red and the two started bickering across the table.
“Wasn't the Lilith carrier betrothed to a `fallen angel'?” Kurama quietly interrupted Yusuke's and Koenma's fight. Koenma nodded and Yusuke's mouth dropped.
`Now she has to get married!!' Yusuke thought to himself.
“She is supposed to be betrothed to Samael, a fallen angel who her family has been running from for generations. Each Lilith carrier born is betrothed to the same Samael. Samael is no force to be reckoned with. He has waited for at least 50 generations of Lilith carriers to claim one. Sayoko's… or rather `Sayuri's' parents wanted their daughter to have her own choices in life…” Koenma dictated. Kurama nodded, understanding that people make selfless choices in life to protect the one's they love.
