Chapter 10: Knights
Sayuri had finally gone to sleep after an hour of pacing around her room, her eyes searching some where for the boy she needed to see. Finally she had accepted that he wasn't connected to her anymore, and she went to sleep. Hiei sat outside her room on a tree branch. He had been watching her since Kurama had walked her into her bedroom. A few trees around the temple had been slashed in anger.
`Gorgeous humans ending up being demons. But…' Hiei thought as he crawled through Sayuri's window to sit by her bed. Her face looked serene as she slept in the darkness. Hiei felt like he could just reach out and touch her. He wanted to.
“Hiei…Don't…Yukio…” Hiei shuttered when he heard his name in the same sentence as that damn Yukio's. The one who hurt her, who murdered her parents. The anger she felt and the rage she wished she could express, it all was still in Hiei's head.
“I'm not like him, get that straight.” Hiei pointed out as Sayuri slept. He crossed his arms and looked at her, remembering how she first fell into the temple when the stupid detective tripped and almost killed the ningen. Or rather, the so-called “ningen” who turned out to be “cursed”.
“Kurama…Hiei…” Hiei relaxed when he heard the fox's name next to his.
`She must be reliving a memory of mine.' Hiei wished he could tell which one it was. He didn't dare try to figure out. It was odd luck that the connection was dis-connected; Hiei didn't want to chance it.
“Stupid nigen…stupid girl… mate…” Hiei's face turned a bright color red as he almost shouted in protest. He calmed his nerves down as the girl rolled over in the bed, her back towards him.
`Stupid girl.' Hiei thought to himself.
“Hiei?” Yukina opened the door to see Hiei sitting by Sayuri's bed, watching her serenely. Yukina smiled at the boy as he turned pink. Yukina's eyes opened wide and then she nodded towards Hiei that she would leave him alone. She smiled a smile that Hiei never got sick of.
“You could just tell her, she thinks of you as a brother anyway…”
“That's not the poi….W-W-WHAT?!” Hiei stammered as he turned and looked at large violet eyes on a shadow that sat up in bed. The Jaganshi glared at the girl who sat with her back to the moonlight of her open window.
“You're lucky I didn't scream when you came in.” Sayuri smiled. Hiei stood up and looked the girl straight in the eyes.
“I'll give you a good reason to scream, onna!” Hiei felt his hand grab the hilt of his katana. Sayuri's eyes gave a look of fear and Hiei let go of his anger. He sat back on the chair and watched as Sayuri moved the covers towards the edge of the bed. She sat there with just a long t-shirt on, not caring what she looked like.
`Not that she looks bad…' Hiei thought mindlessly. Hiei's face went pink.
“You're thinking I look good like this.” Sayuri whispered in the darkness. Hiei looked at her in fear that the bond was still strong on her side. Sayuri's laugh was soft and real. It flooded Hiei's ears and he felt good just listening to her.
“No, no more connection. I could tell when your face turned pink. You didn't have to say it…Unless you… you don't think so…” Sayuri tilted her head and Hiei felt an impulse to hug her or hold her. He stood up and reached his hand out shyly to touch her face; worried that he might do something wrong.
“No. You're right.” Hiei's hand met Sayuri's face and her soft skin. She smiled and held on to his hand. It felt nice that someone actually cared about her.
`Someone who cares? God, how long has it been? Months maybe? Mom, Dad, can you see me still? People care about me now… People want me now. It feels, so nice…' Sayuri smiled inwardly. She looked into Hiei's blood red eyes and could see all that he was hiding. He didn't feel like she was trying to figure him out, because she had already experienced everything he had.
“I…don't want to hurt you. I'm not like that damn demon!” Hiei looked at Sayuri and realized that she had cowered at the mention at Yukio. Quickly he pulled his hand away from Sayuri before he hurt her. Sayuri's face went blank before she realized that the warm touch was gone. Her eyes looked hurt for a moment before they softened.
“I know,” Sayuri pulled the covers back over her body and rolled back over so that her back was to Hiei. “Good night, Hiei.” She whispered. Hiei wanted to take back what he did, just to be able to see her smile at him again.
{Hiei, come to the living room.}
{Fine.}
Hiei checked to see if anyone was waiting outside the door before walking out and down the hall way.
“Thank you for joining us, Hiei.” Kurama motioned for Hiei to sit down along with Kuwabara and Yusuke. Genkai sat to Kurama's right.
“We have to do something about Sayuri so she is safe, and all of her line after her is. It seems the only way to break the curse for her is for her to take a spouse/mate. It would in her future's best interest for her to take a demon so that if she had children it would be mostly a dem….”
“Why don't we just kill the guy?” Kuwabara interrupted Genkai. Genkai glared at Kuwabara who didn't speak.
“Basically, that's what we need to do. Samael has to die in order to protect Sayuri's future. I talked to Koenma last night and it seems that it is possible to kill Samael. It has been done only three times in history, but Koenma ensures me that it CAN be done.” Genkai finished. Yusuke nodded, ready to take what ever means necessary to protect his friend. Hiei felt his heart beat fast thinking about killing the man who had hired that damn Yukio. It hadn't been satisfying enough to hear about Yukio and his den mates being dead by time Yusuke, Kurama, and idiot got to the house. Hiei was positive that it was indeed Samael who killed the sick bastard Yukio.
“Let's do it.” Yusuke said.
