Chapter 11: Nightly Surprises

Sayuri tossed in her bed, her body wrapped up in the sheets like some kind of sandwich. She threw her arms out to chase away the demons in her dreams;

Sayuri screamed as the black clad figure with the scarred face threw Kurama and Yusuke against the floor; both of their eyes blank with the only expression being death. Genkai was there, trying to protect her, trying to help her hold in everything. But Genkai died too, another victim to the black haired man who looked at Sayuri like a perfectly aged bottle of wine. Sayuri cried, falling to her knees, feeling just as helpless as when she was Yukio's play toy. The man walked over to her and knelt beside her, running his cold fingers along her warm cheeks, tracing the tears that fell. The man's eyes were deep blue, sucking in all the happiness that Sayuri had felt the last week while being at Genkai's temple. “You are the cause of all this death.” The man whispered in Sayuri's ear while his hands reached up and grabbed full of her dark violet hair. Sayuri broke down and sobbed harder. “I can see what's inside of you Sayoko…The only connection you will ever have, is with ME.” The man threatened. Sayuri nodded. Out of the corner of her eye, Sayuri watched as Hiei drew his sword and the figure turned his head. The figure's hand raised and Hiei's sword ran itself into Hiei's stomach Hiei's face contorted and Sayuri broke away from the man's grasp. “SAYOKO!” The man yelled, but Sayuri ran until she was at Hiei's side. “HIEI! Oh no, I'm so sorry! Hiei, please!” Sayuri gasped as she sobbed at the sight of Hiei's blood every where. The Jaganshi's gaze pierced her and she recognized the look anywhere. “It's your fault I'm dying…” Hiei coughed.

“HIEI! No! I'm sorry! Please! NO! Don't LEAVE me! I didn't know! He did it! HIEI!” Sayuri screamed in her sleep. The sleeping Jaganshi heard the girl from all the way in the back of the temple. He came in through the window to find Kurama holding the girl as she sobbed hard. Sayuri tried to catch her breath but just couldn't.
“Fox…” Hiei choked on his words. The girl stopped her crying for a moment and opened her eyes wide. Kurama looked down at Sayuri and then at her hands.
“Uhhh…” Sayuri removed her hands from her stomach and looked in horror as her hands were covered in her own blood. Kurama gasped and called for Yukina and Genkai. Both came rushing in the room and were frightened by the sight of blood all over Sayuri's night shirt and hands. Hiei stood there, frozen while Genkai and Yukina pushed Kurama away from where Sayuri was. Sayuri's eyes met Hiei's and pleaded for him, pleaded for that connection with another person again.
“Hiei! Kurama! GET OUT!” Genkai screamed at the two Youkai as they took off Sayuri's pajamas. The two hurried out of the room and proceeded to walk a short distance to the living room. Hiei sat down and buried his head in his hands.
“Fox, why does it hurt so much? Why do I feel guilty for not helping something I have no control over? Is this another power that the carrier possesses?” Hiei begged the Kitsune to tell him anything. So long as it was something that could explain how he felt.
“You like her Hiei, you cannot help that. Why would you anyways? Wasn't it you who said that you `could see why she would be wanted as a mate'? Love isn't a power that you can possess… not like you're thinking at least…” Kurama sighed. Explaining what loved felt like to Hiei was like trying to explain what snow was to someone who lived in a desert. It didn't seem to fit until experience kicked in. Hiei sat in the darkness with Kurama, who was covered in Sayuri's blood still. Both Youkai sat in silence, not wanting to talk more about the screaming and the blood.
“Hiei, she wants to see you.” Yukina spoke softly as she stood in the doorway. Hiei looked up at his sister, her frame so fragile but her will so strong. He nodded and proceeded to see the Carrier. Yukina led him into the room and removed the wash clothe from Sayuri's forehead to replace it. Quietly she walked out of the room and closed the door.
“Sayuri…I'm sorry.” Hiei said, trying to sound as sure of himself as he could. Truthfully he couldn't make it sound as convincing as he wanted to, but he was trying. Sayuri didn't open her eyes but she nodded. Her body was fighting against her mind. They wanted separate things. Mind wanted to save everyone by destroying the body, and the body wanted to protect itself by running from the mind.
“Hiei, have you ever felt like someone is waiting for you and you can't find them, you just need a little help to get started, and once you find them… the world will change for the better?” Sayuri said; her voice soft and feeble. Hiei nodded, remembering how he felt when he found Yukina. That was the prize he had when he had the Jagan implanted. Not only did he found out where he was from, but that he had a relative still alive. Hiei remembered finding her, watching her, seeing her almost every day he was in the Ningenkai. It did feel like the world was changing.
“I know that feeling. But who is waiting for you?” Hiei tried to sound as gentle as he could. He wanted to pull back all the facades and all the walls he put up; but they stayed structurally sound.
“Maybe if I give myself to him…Maybe he'll stop coming here. It would keep him from hurting anyone to get to me. My parents… They tried to run, but, I'm not as smart as them. I'm sick of hiding.” Sayuri felt tears well in her eyes. Hiei's eyes were wide with shock. He didn't want her giving herself up.
“You can't! Be mine! Don't you dare give yourself to Samael!” Hiei growled. He felt tears start to form in his eyes from all the pain that she was causing him. It wasn't something Hiei was going to admit to the world, but he wanted the Carrier. He didn't want to see her hurt; he wanted her to be by him, to need him. “This isn't fair!” Hiei said.
“I don't want to see anyone die because of me. You have to understa…”
“No! You need to understand that it is our mission. So stay!” Hiei walked towards the door, anger boiling inside him as he refused to believe what Sayuri was saying. `Stupid onna, doesn't know what she is saying!' Hiei thought.

Sayuri opened her hand and saw a small blue sliver in her palm. She knew what she had to do, and she figured she would just do it and get it done with. Her eyes closed and she could feel the room get chilly.
“You rang; my fiancé?” A velvet voice chimed. Sayuri opened her eyes and dropped the sliver on the floor. The figure smirked as his betrothed dropped the tracking device that he had Yukio put in her so that he would know where she was.
“You have to leave them alone, understand?” Sayuri demanded of the figure, who swooped closer to pick up his injured wife-to-be. The scar along Samael's face was off shades of light pink, making his face seem longer, older.
“Any thing, so long as you are mine.” Samael greedily looked at Sayuri.
“Good bye Hiei….” Sayuri whispered as she disappeared in the arms of a fallen angel lord.
