Chapter 12: Nighttime
She opened the window to the Makai world below her; silent away from the bustling cities. It was pale in the moon light, cold with the people who made her whole. Her heart slowed to almost flat-line while she looked out into the new world. It dazzled her and screamed at her to run home. Run back to the person who had her heart. She was captivated and captured. At least she knew that Hiei would be safe, free to move on; he'd have the ability to forget about her.
“You look so gorgeous in that dress, Sayoko.” A velvety voice soothed from the bedroom door way. Sayuri pulled herself away from the night to look at the voice's body. It was her fiancé. His midnight hair was a stark contrast to his pale skin; midnight blue eyes searching her and pushing her down.
“I told you to call me Sayuri…” Sayuri went back to looking out the window of her bedroom. Strong arms slid down hers, caressing her sides. They were warm and they pulled her backwards against Samael's chest. Sayuri's heart beat faster at the touch of Samael's warm hands against her cheeks.
“Are you cold, Sayuri?” Samael smothered her name with desire. Sayuri felt her skin shiver, even though she was perfectly warm against Samael's chest. His hands ran under her chin, feeling the goose bumps along her neck. Her head tilted up with the help of his fingers pulling her chin gently towards the sky.
“You're…so….tall.” Sayuri stammered, looking up at Samael, who's head seemed to be far away. She felt her hand begin to reach up to touch his scar, but then stopped. Her body felt all wrong, like she was being touched by the wrong man, that she wasn't being faithful.
{He wasn't kind to you, Sayuri. Wake up and realize that you are better off without him. That boy could never take care of you, could never love you. He only loves himself.}
{But I still want to love him..}
{How can you love someone when they don't love themselves?}
“Are you okay?” Samael's face looked distressed, but still smooth like a delicate marble. Sayuri felt his hand melt into hers and pull her palm up to his lips. Her eyes closed as she felt Samael kiss her palm, then her wrist, and finally he kissed the top of her head.
“I…I'm sorry….” Sayuri said, looking out over the Makai. She felt comfortable in her fiancé's arms, something she hadn't felt. Something about the arrangement felt right, like she was only meant to be with Samael. Maybe Hiei was…
{NO. Hiei!}
{Stop thinking about HIM!}
“About what?” Samael asked calmly, releasing his wife-to-be's wrist. She pulled away quickly, sucking away all the warmth Samael had felt. He composed himself again to draw her back in. Sayuri held her breath, afraid to move. She turned around and found that she was right in Samael's arms. He held her tightly against his chest, pulling her into the warmth that he gave off. She softened and let herself breathe again.
“I…I forgot…” Sayuri sighed. Her mind felt like it was being penetrated and messed around with. Like wires were getting changed and switched without her knowledge. But she couldn't place it. Maybe she really was better…
{Better what? I can't remember… He feels so warm.}
{Forget it, you don't need to think about anything but that warmth.}
“How about we retire to bed? You look fragile, like you haven't had enough sleep. Hmmm, Sayoko?” Samael suggested to his bride. She blushed and smiled at him. The new feelings she had were oddly large and seemed to develop from no where. Sayoko… She remembered that name from some where.
“Alright.” Sayuri smiled. Samael took her by the hand and led her away from the Makai window with the temptation of fleeing.

Hiei stood in her room, holding the blankets she slept in, the pillow she had laid her head on, and the night gown she had worn. Nothing was amiss in the room, it looked like she had just gotten up and walked away. A normal teenager's room. Hiei stood, watching the gang run around the temple rushing to find her. He knew she was gone, that she had left. He didn't know where she went, but with her dumb luck she would walk into the arms of that Samael without realizing it.
“She's not here, no need to search.” Hiei stated bluntly. Kurama popped his head into the girl's room to see Hiei standing by her bed. His stomach cringed at the thought of what Hiei was feeling.
“Sayuri!” Yusuke ran screaming all through the house until Keiko caught him and made him stop. His heart was racing and he was almost in tears. Days ago he was told his childhood friend was in danger, and now, today, the danger was finally real.
“Samael's still first priority. If he is dead, she'll be safe no matter what.” Kurama spoke softly to Yusuke, who looked confused as to why Hiei was acting more morose than normal. Hiei glared at the detective and averted his gaze.
“Right. Time to go gang!” Yusuke said, enthusiastic about kicking demon ass. He was always ready to bring justice. Hiei reached for his sword before looking at Kurama, who as always had a transparent look of worry for the Jaganshi. Hiei's heart beat fast, hoping he would see Sayuri, be able to save her and help her, then he would drag her back and make her stay put in the Temple for him. Mission first, then Hiei would make sure she understood what he meant.
“Come on, Hiei, it's time.” Kurama softly said. Hiei nodded. It was time.
