Part Three
"Looks like they came this here way," they heard a gruff voice say.
"So ... so how far ahead are they?" another, higher, voice asked.
"Can't be too much. With only one set o' tracks, one of 'em must be hurt. They won't be too fast then. I hope it's the little one."
Hiei smiled at that. He now knew who the voices belonged to - two brothers they had fought to get inside the stronghold where their target was. The big, burly demon with the deeper voice had been easily outmaneuvered by Hiei's speed. The smaller brother had been outwitted by Kurama. They had rendered both unconscious in a matter of seconds.
"We're going to get 'em for what they did to daddy, aren't we?" the smaller one asked.
"That's right! No one comes in kills our daddy and gets away with it! Those dirty demon traitors!"
"If we hadn't found out they was coming, we all coulda been dead!"
"Stop yer whinin'," the big one snapped and they heard a loud smack, followed by a high-pitched yelp. "And keep your mouth shut! I can't see the tracks anymore, so we're gonna hafta listen for them."
Kurama and Hiei lay perfectly still. The only sound that could be heard was the water rushing over the rocks in the stream nearby. To Hiei, the silence seemed to last forever, but Kurama looked perfectly at ease.
Finally, a rustling deeper in the forest caught the demons' attentions and they tramped off, lusting for blood. When they got far enough away, Hiei released a sigh of relief.
"That was convenient," he said.
"It was closer than I counted on," Kurama admitted. "Perhaps we should refrain from speaking aloud for the time being."
'You're the master thief,' Hiei transmitted telepathically. 'This suits me just fine.' Hiei relaxed and closed his eyes.
Kurama propped himself up on one elbow and rearranged a few branches and flowers so he could see the stars emerging overhead. 'Can I ask you a question, Hiei?' he thought.
'What is it?'
'Why did you seek me out in the human world?'
